I'm really sorry to say that this disappointed us so much. I wanted soup and ordered the egg flower. It was bland and not appealing at all. We ate inside and had to wait for them to prepare take-out orders before they took our order. If we had gone to the counter and ordered take out, they would have helped us then but we had to wait as eat-in customers? The meat was really chewy in the kung pao beef. It didn't seem like anything was being cooked fresh. I tried to look into their woks to see what looked good, and they were almost all empty on a Friday early dinner time. I will not be returning. Need to find a tasty. Reliable Chinese place nearby. I usually never write about a poor experience, but I hope to warn someone from having a disappointing experience like we did. I hate writing negative reviews because I always want to support local businesses, but unfortunately my recent experiences at Szechuan Gardens in Newbury Park have been disappointing. When they first opened, the food was consistently hot, fresh, flavorful, and honestly some of the best Chinese food in the area. Lately, though, it feels like the quality has really declined. Several times now, the food has arrived lukewarm and tasting like it wasn't freshly made to order. Some dishes honestly seem like they may have been sitting in the case before being packaged for delivery. What's been most concerning is that every time I've eaten there recently, I've ended up with a stomach ache afterward -- and all the unpleasantness that comes along with that. After multiple experiences like this, it's hard to ignore. The house chicken dish is also unbelievably spicy now to the point where it's almost inedible, and not in a balanced or flavorful way. I also miss the paper-wrapped chicken, which used to be one of my favorites. It's disappointing because this place had so much potential in the beginning. I miss the days when Chinese food was consistent, comforting, and dependable - especially classics like orange, chicken, sesame chicken and Mongolian beef that tasted fresh every time. Maybe ok for picking up but wasn't ok for eating in. They didn't have AC on so they just kept the door open & it got quite hot inside & the flies come in & they don't keep it very clean or comfortable inside. We packed up our dinners & moved outside & that was better but defeated the purpose of eating in a cool environment on a hot day. Also inside it's really small & the employees made a lot of loud conversational noise so even if it were cooler, it wouldn't have been a good setting to enjoy some dinner while catching up w/ a friend. Even though I feel like my first time experience here was more of a 3 star experience, I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt that maybe I came on an off day. The prices and portions are great. I called ahead and ordered the Thick Rice Noodles with Beef. AKA Beef Chow Fun. Upon walking in I noticed the food trays on display had minimal food that looked like they had been sitting there far too long. It was a bit messy too. The portion size was great. It was about $11. The noodle texture was perfection, but overall it was lacking a sauce and flavor. The dish itself was pretty dry. I've had Chow Fun before and it's a bit saucier with a sweet soy sauce. Stopped by for some Chinese food... Orange chicken Nothing super special about this orange chicken. It was served off the hot trays behind the glass and was mildly flavored. It seemed like an average fast food orange chicken. The combo box with kung pao chicken and beef with broccoli was next. I ordered chow main and fried rice for the sides. The chow main was served at basically just above room temperature and didn't provide too much flavor. Not that I expected much from the sides. The broccoli was fresh and had a nice fresh crisp bite to it. The beef had a decent and familiar flavor, yet it too had some cold spots in it. The kung pao chicken with peanuts and celery was pretty good. Nothing extraordinary but it was warm throughout and didn't have much spice to it. I'd give it a 2 out of 5 on the spiciness scale. The pork soup dumplings were made to order, they took a few minutes extra to come out and that was a good sign. Overall, average food here.. nothing terrible but nothing wow'd me either. So happy this place opened up nearby as it was a great first experience and I plan to stop by everytime I am craving Chinese food. Stopped by on a Sunday afternoon and there was some people inside but not too busy. The staff were all friendly and the lady showed us how to order. The inside was very clean and they had water and hot tea out for customers which was nice. We ordered 2 of the 3 combo plates and also got the sesame balls. It was ready within 10 minutes of ordering. For my combo plate I got the noodles & rice, orange chicken, honey spicy shrimp and sauted string beans. The noodles, orange chicken and string beans were so good! I would definitely order these again. Unfortunately I wasn't a big fan of the honey spicy shrimp I was hoping for it to be more spicy but it was more sweet and the batter was thick and falling off of the shrimp. But I did eat all the shrimp so it was good nonetheless. The other combo plate had broccoli beef which was sooo good. The broccoli was cooked well and the sauce was flavorful. The sesame balls we ordered were also a perfect sweet treat to end the meal. The red bean filling was great and the crunchy texture on the outside is my favorite. Stopped in to try their hot bar options their 1 item entree combo (Combo A) comes with 1 entree options and you can choose from white rice, fried rice and noodles or combine half and half. Because the items are premade, service was super quick and the person helping out confirms you order and charges before they pack your items for you. This was pretty decent and slightly cheaper than some competitors in the area. Items were well cooked and didn't taste overly salty. The teriyaki chicken was juicy and tender. I definitely would come back to try some of their cook to order items and they also have dim sum, will have to come back for another time and update my review. After that, the main dishes came out and tasted very bland. This is the worst restaurant in Thousand Oaks. Don't waste your money here, go to Mandarin Bistro instead. read more

First review of 2025 and we have a winner folks! New Chinese cuisine in Newbury Park that is a 5/5 stars! If this is how my foodie adventures are starting out for 2025 then I will be 20 pounds heavier but even happier by this time next year lol. Chinese food / Asian inspired dishes are definitely in my top 3 food groups and imagine my excitement when a few weeks ago I saw the signage for this restaurant go up for this spot in newbury park. I eagerly awaited their opening and first chance I got I rushed over. My review is strictly for take out items but happy to report that this restaurant is both a standard Chinese hot bar and also has a full force menu of classic Chinese dishes and dim sum staples. I called ahead and placed an order for pickup and the gal on the phone was lovely, clear and friendly. I stopped in 15 minutes after placing my order and it was all being packaged up for me. It was nice as it was as fresh as could be. That's when I noticed they had a hot bar. So if you are in the mood for a hot plate to go then this might be more your speed. However, I'm a fan of made fresh to order Chinese food so I'm happy I called ahead to make a pickup order. If you are in less of a rush you can also go in, place your order at the counter, and then wait. While they aren't a full fledged restaurant with table service, you can eat there as they had a few tables inside and outside. The prices are average / comparable to other similar restaurants BUT I feel like the portion sizes here are bigger and the protein ratio is way better here compared to my other Chinese spots. I was shocked how much chicken, shrimp, and beef were loaded into my orders. For that it's a great value. Sometimes I feel like the ratio of veggies to protein is like 60/40 but here it's flipped - so know if you are ordering a protein type dish it will be loaded with good stuff :) The food honestly was super good and flavorful. This is going to be my new spot for takeout as every bite was delicious and something I would 100% order again. My favorite bites were the shrimp with lobster sauce and beef fried rice. Both were 5/5 stars. It's been hard to find shrimp with lobster sauce that isn't watery and this is the closest version I've found to the types I like from LA/the east coast that are on the thicker side for the sauce. It was super good and generous portion of shrimp. Same with the fried rice, beef was delicious and lots of egg in the fried rice which was a win for me. I also very much enjoyed my chicken with black bean sauce and Shumai- both dishes were almost a 5/5. Chicken dish was loaded with chicken and tasty green onions + other veg which I appreciated. The Shumai isn't quite like the kind you get in the SGV/626 if that helps BUT it hit the spot and was still very tasty in flavor. There wasn't a dish here I tried today that I didn't like. All in all this is some of the better Chinese food on this side of town. Lastly, the staff were super nice and welcoming. Both the gal and the gentleman who were working when I came in greeted me and had big smiles on their faces. They told me happy new year and made me feel super welcome and appreciated as a customer. I love that the gentlemen cooking is in an area behind the counter where you can see the food being made fresh and working the wok. Pretty cool setup and service was another 5/5. So happy to have this spot right over the grade. You definitely need to check them out and to support this new business. read more

We stopped to try this place for Father's Day when we saw the grand opening sign and figured we'd try something new. That was a mistake. We got the 2 item combo B and 3 item combo C with a Thai tea, pork boa, and sesame balls. The noodles were thick which I like, but oh so greasy. The BBQ pork was pulled out in a bowl covered in plastic, steaming as if just freshly microwaved. It was a bit tough to chew confirming it may have in fact been reheated. The sides of pork boa and sesame balls were decent, but they missed the mark on pretty much everything else. My wife even through the Thai tea away. Beef and broccoli wasn't terrible, it tasted like the frozen take-home PF Changs from Walmart, but the orange chicken to me was inedible. I took one bite and spit it out into a napkin. The combination of spice and orange sauce that they use just didn't mix well for me and tasted more like I had licked an ashtray someone spilled chile sauce on. Since the 3 item combo basically just means they'll put a little of an item on your plate instead of some of the noodles, the orange chicken sauce covered part of the noodles I had to throw out as even taking a bite of noodles with that sauce made me instantly spit it out. Finally they don't have a soda fountain, and they sell canned sodas at $2.50/ea, or you can opt for some suspect looking room temperature lemon water. As for the ambiance, the place is stuffy and small, but luckily had outside seating. Well that's this critic's review, until next time, I'll be eating. read more

I'll admit, I expected a more formal sit‑down restaurant, but it has a small, very casual vibe--almost like a very casual version of Panda Express. What really stood out right away was the service. I was greeted with genuine warmth and enthusiasm, and it's clear the people here work hard and care about their customers. That alone made me want to root for the place. I ordered the curry chicken and hot & sour soup. Both dishes came out piping hot and fresh, which I appreciated. Unfortunately, the flavors just didn't land for me. Everything was surprisingly bland, and I found myself adding hot sauce, soy sauce, mustard, and salt to try to wake it up. That said, they have plenty of dishes on the menu that looked delicious, and judging by the many positive reviews, plenty of people really enjoy the food here. Came by this place for a late takeout dinner. Had no idea what to expect as the place is fairly new, but it was a nice surprise. The inside was smallish with a few tables. The woman working greeted us and explained their menu. They had a hot bar with some pre-made items that fall into the Combo section of their menu. They also have some cooked to order and dim sum items. We went for the combos. It was late in the day but the food wasn't dried out from being out or soggy from sitting in sauce. Overall I'd say the food was ok and the price was very good. I want to go back and get more of their cooked to order and dim sum. Otherwise this might become a staple for nights I want something affordable and don't feel like cooking. read more

She also gave me rice and noodles and asked me if that was enough AND YES IT WAS! Everything was so delicious!! The service was amazing our server gave us everything to eat in the restaurant which i appreciated as we arrived at 8 and they close and 9! Ordered takeout and online - when I picked up the food all seemed fine. Prices were pretty expensive for the quality of food $50 for two combos, a soup, and order of dumplings. Once I got home I realized they completely messed up one of the orders. We ordered all white rice and orange chicken for the combo and they gave us all chow main with orange chicken and beef broccoli. The sizzling rice soup tasted like it had been sitting and went bad.
