    Walking in to be disappointed
    Joy O.

I am soooo happy I gave this restaurant another chance. I was able dine there with some new friends who got great reservations. Everything was great. The hostess at the front greeted us kindly and offered us complimentary glasses of champagne. We were seated immediately. Our waitress, Shakira, was AMAZING!!! Give her a RAISE!!! She was attentive and gave great recommendations. She took pictures of me at the end of the night. She was so sweet and made Our girls night out even better! We had our APPS: shrimp, egg rolls, and deviled eggs: delicious. Our MAINS: I had the salmon fried rice with the crab mac and cheese. Soooo good! I ordered the lavender lemon drop. Very nice! Lastly, I tasted my friend's cheesecake. Absolutely divine!!!! My final rating is for the decor: View the pics. It's absolutely beautiful and very cozy because it's a smaller venue from it's sister restaurant 1123. 5 stars, 10/10 MINUS NOTHING!!!!!!!!

The food and the server were great. We came with a party of 6. There was a lot of energy in the place. It matched the energy of our party because we just wanted to have a fun Friday. Very nice interior. We got the jerk chicken lollipops, Mac and cheese, crab cakes and steak. We also got complimentary champagne, maybe because of our party size? We weren't rushed. Our reservation was for 7:45 and we got out at 10:15. The conversation was good so we didn't mind. The only bad part is that the food and drinks didn't all come out at once. Some people got their drinks and apps before others, but it wasn't long gaps in between. It didn't ruin the experience. A tip is to ask the price for the items that do not have price tags by them. It's not what you think so it's better to be clear. For example, we were debating the snapper, which looked good, but was $75 and did not have the price listed. I didn't expect that and it made us change our mind. Don't assume!

I was greeted with a complimentary glass of champagne by three smiling professional hostess. It took a little while for my waitress to come to my table, but another waitress was kind enough to not only greet me but get my ordered started as well. The ambiance, the decor and the vibe was very nice. I ordered the wagyu egg rolls for an appetizer, the short rib and risotto for my main and a don Julio margarita. The food was very good. The mac and cheese was a little on the salty side and the drinks are pretty pricey. Overall, I had a great experience and I would definitely come back and try out some different things on the menu. Oh, and my actual waitress was very sweet and attentive. I wish I remembered her name!

3.5 star rounded up. Though the servers have good customer service, the amount of wait time from walking into the building is a bit excessive. 10-15 minute wait with a reservation (we were given complimentary champagne). Multiple tables having to flag down any waiter just to get service. Very small restaurant and the tables are low + fairly close together. As for the food, I would give it 5 stars. The crab stuffed oysters were absolutely incredible and make me wait to visit again for those alone! Some meals seemed a little too simple for the prices, but the variety was good and the bites we had were delicious.

Before arriving at the restaurant we got a phone call stating the restaurant was temporarily CLOSED and operating down the street at 1123 restaurant. That was a bit odd but we went with it. I reviewed the menu before arriving as well. When we arrived at the restuarant, it was indeed down the street but we found out that Huncho House joined with another restuarant called Solo's Den and they renamed the restaurant 1123. Upon arriving we received a sip of champagne (yes just a sip tasting) complimentary of course. The "new temporary" location was more spacious than the original location which was okay but the table were close together. Where if you got up you have to excuse yourself for touching or being over other customers table. We received the menus and they nothing like menu we saw online. Since Huncho merged with Solo's Den to create 1123 the menu is not Asian African infusion that also comes with a sushi menu. Now the food..we ordered the deviled eggs with fried chicken thighs and hot honey and cheesesteak fusion rolls for the appetizer. My friend she ordered the whole branzino dish and I ordered the Asian steak (that is the name of the dish) medium with mushrooms and garlic mash potatoes for the sides. Unfortunately when my steak was served at the table it was well done. I let the waitress know my steak was not cooked to medium and she took it back to the chef. They did prepare another steak which came out cooked correctly the second time. Since I was not drinking I ordered the Hibiscus Mule which was tasty. The service was okay overall but it was alittle slow. The waitress and staff were slow to fill water glasses and drink orders. We literally saw the bar staff standing around behind the bar talking doing nothing through out our time there. Also the serving staff was moving too fast causing spillage off of plates onto the tables and into drinks. Lastly we asked the staff how long they were going to be in that location temporarily and they stated they didnt know because the other location has HVAC issues. My overall experience was just okay, but if Huncho has indeed merged with Solo's Den to create 1123, why keep the other Huncho house menu on the website because now if you arrived you will be confused and disappointed because customers are not seeing the same menu or prices.

Finally made it to Huncho house (it's merged with his other restaurant 1123 currently) still very good, service and quality of the food.

Wow! I'm so glad I finally booked the restaurant. I've been a fan of his from Food Network. Had co-workers in town from down south. They appreciated the friendly staff, ambiance, and delicious food. So happy to see Tobias there and working after his injury last year. Would definitely recommend the cheesesteak eggrolls, short rib, brussel sprouts, and lobster ravioli. Table next to us had deviled eggs that looked delish also.

Overall great ambiance but this location is kinda small so make sure you book a reservation ahead. I ordered the fried snapper and it was tasty and flavorful. I loved the sauce that comes with it. Pack your pockets though because it will cost you an arm and a leg.

My friend and I chose this restaurant in support of Black History Month because the owners are black! The restaurant was very good but I would have made some small changes to make the experience great. The oysters my friend got were really good. The flavors were spot on. My shrimp was cool I just personally wish it was spicier and the batter crispier. The lobster pasta was very good flavor wise, perfect level of spiciness, I would have just changed my noodles because they were chewy. As far as service, it did take a while to get seated despite us having reservations. They did offer us complimentary champagne during the wait which was nice. The food delivery was a little slow but not terrible. My only real complaint is the seating. It's a small restaurant so the tables are very close together and the seats are also really low to the ground. My friend and I have long legs and our legs at the end of dinner were very stiff! I think the restaurant is on the right track they just have to make a few small tweaks.

We had a reservation for 7:30pm we were greeted with complimentary champagne. And we waited 10 minutes to be seated. Restaurant is small but it has a nice ambiance. We were seated a nice young man asked us if we wanted water. We waited 17 minutes for our waitress. We both ordered cocktail laugh now cry later we both rate it 8.5 it has a good taste and the buzz creeps up on you. We both had two. Appetizers crab fried devil eggs it was a special $28, 10/10. Entrees I got the lamb chops and bae got salmon & crab fried rice. Plus we ordered sides lobster potatoes & Brussels sprouts. We both rate the Brussels sprouts 9.5/10 & lobster mash potatoes 9.5/10. My lamb chops were 10/10 & bae salmon was hot but her crab fried rice was cold 8/10. We ordered cheesesteak egg rolls And oysters to go. Overall the service was good the food was good so se give the restaurant 8/10.

    Strawberry cream cheese French toast

Decided to go for Mother's Day. My reservation was for 4pm. It was still the brunch menu, and they were out of a lot of their menu items. I decided on the stuffed strawberry cream cheese French toast, 5/10. sadly disappointed due to only squiggling squirts of cream cheese on the plate and not in the French toast. The price was rather high for fried bread. I was looking forward to their regular menu. The drinks were definitely a 10/10. We were placed in a back room but the service was great, we just felt a little rushed. I will give it a try again, maybe in the future.

Huncho House provides guests with an upscale dining experience. The best part is that it's black-owned. Everything about this dinner experience is top-tier and the definition of black excellence. Booking: First things first, booking a reservation. I booked my reservation about a month in advance through the Huncho House website via Open Table. I booked the chef's table experience, this experience costs $100 per person to reserve these seats. Please note: this is a separate fee from the dining service (Max 4 guests). I highly recommend booking these seats, worth every penny. You get to engage with Chef Tobias, Chef Key and Chef Lady T. Their energy is infectious. It was empowering to see so many women chefs in the kitchen. Decor and Design: The overall ambiance of the restaurant is beautiful. I loved the attention to detail, the cutlery and plate wear are stunning, I ended up ordering some of the costers from the Honeycomb collection from the William and Sonoma site that night. Service: The service was top-tier, we were greeted by the general manager, Diona, who gave us an overview of the Chef's table experience as we enjoyed a complimentary glass of champagne. Paris, our server, guided us through the menu and recommended her favorite items and popular pairings. Food: Everything we ordered was outstanding. The charbroiled oysters, crispy Asian shrimp, red snapper, and crab & jalapeno fettuccine were a few highlights that we tried. We just ordered a bunch of food to share. The food was worth every penny. I ended up ordering another crab & jalapeno pasta to go. We also tried the vanilla bread pudding and the flaming banana foster cheesecake. The cheesecake is mouth-watering and finished with salted caramel. Parking: Huncho House is metro accessible. There is street parking and garage parking available. Please note that parking is not validated.

Huncho House Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Huncho House

    Is this restaurant reservation only?

Yes it is which is sometimes limited due to being booked weeks in advance.

How is the bar seating? That's the only option we can find for seating at this time.

There are three main areas; high top tables next to the bar, the main dining area and 2 to 3 bar seats facing the kitchen. I personally would wait until the main dining area opens up. The place is pretty small.

What are the requirements for the chef's table and what, if anything, is included with making a reservation for that area?

Chef's table (as of most recent), is seating at the kitchen counter-which is bar height, and facing the kitchen. It includes a shot with the head chef (of that night), personal waiter, and observing the "behind the scenes" look at the kitchen. No…

Is there a bar or is a reservation required?

There is a bar, but it's not for patrons. It's for the staff to put in and retrieve drink orders. Reservations are needed.

They don't have typical bacon or sausage because "the owners don't eat pork" which really sounds like something more appropriate for their house, and not their restaurant business on Rhode island ave. The "chicken sausage" was a shriveled up piece of chicken paste that they cooked in the microwave. I ordered scrambled eggs, and when they came out, they had that crust that scrambled eggs get when they sit out after being cooked. The grits were lumpy and outside of the cheese sauce they put on the top - had no flavor. The French toast tasted like milk eggs and burnt grill. And the pancakes, were very obviously pre made and microwaved. Additionally - the meal I ordered is listed to come with a bread, eggs, a side and a meat. I asked for bacon, and was told the owners don't eat pork. I asked for the chicken sausage.. 5 minutes later the server asked me if I wanted the sausage spicy or not. Then when she brought the bill, there was a $4 up charge for spicy sausage that she neither told me, nor was it on the menu. And to make matters worse - the sausages were not spicy and were actually just flat out nasty. This is a SAD excuse for a restaurant. I'm sad that I spent calories walking there and dollars eating there.

I washed it down with a very flavorful Tempranillo Red. The collards were middle of the road flavorful. The vegetables relied heavy on the tartness of vinegar, but not the variety of notes I've had elsewhere. The dish was serviceable, tasty even. I just wouldn't flock back to taste it again. The duck came in two forms: the breast was extremely tender, and yet very subdued in flavor. The confit leg was "crispy", which was a bit of flavor at least. The tempranillo red wine was the most complex flavor palette during the meal. Service was prompt and professional. The restaurant itself is very Lloyd Wrightesque, lots of wood and geometrics. The 3 rating is for a casual return, but other options exist. (versus 4 for Must Go Back)

But what I love most is the ambience. It has a warm, neighborhood feel when you visit. The large bar area reminds me of Cheers, a place where everyone knows your name. It can sometimes be a wait for cook to order meals, but I don't mind because you'll meet people to talk with. I definitely recommend you visit!

Ordered delivery and i can't say I would do it again. I had ordered years before and had a good…read morememory of it, so thought I would do it again. I was craving sides, and this place has tons of them. What I found during this experience was it was more quantity over quality. Everything was just kind of mushy and didn't really have a lot of flavor or taste. The best thing out of all of the five sides I ordered was the macaroni and cheese, and I had to add quite a bit of seasoning to make it palatable. The cheesy potatoes threw me, because there was no cheesiness to them. Also, the home fries were the same as the cheesy potatoes, so that meant to big piles of tasteless mush--hot sauce made it better. Also, there had to have been over a cup of onions combined in this box. I nibbled because I was hungry and sadly threw away the rest because I just couldn't eat it. I ordered the crab soup, and that was delicious. I would say though that the small size for the price paid is very questionable. As this was delivery, I can't be on service or ambience. Given my experience, I would not order again.
