I came to Houston in 1988 after living in New Jersey and working in NYC for 10 years. In 1999, I opened a Nationwide Insurance Agency in the strip shopping center at the corner of I-45 North and Crosstimbers. I can remember eating at the Hungry Farmer restaurant on a few occasions while working in the center. I remember being tasty and the portions being enormous compared to other dinners in Houston. My, how things have changed! While the food portions are still enormous. The food quality has declined. I consider myself to be an excellent cook and an even better judge of Soul Food. I ordered a staple of most soul food restaurants: 2 BBQ chicken dinners with 2 sides per order. While the chicken was prepared fairly well, the taste was nothing special! The problems began when I dived into the side dishes: I had corn and mustard greens, out of the can and NOT well seasoned. The corn did not taste like it had been cooked in any butter or margarine, and the mustard greens, also out of the can, were cold! I immediately returned to the counter and let the employee know that the greens were cold. If you want the best bang for your buck, then you will likely enjoy eating at this establishment; however, if you have eaten soul food cooked from scratch, you will be VERY DISAPPOINTED! I've always wanted to stop by this place for years and finally decide to come. I ordered a 3 meat plate (ribs, beef and sausage) and a pork baked potato for myself and a buddy to share. Baked potato was ok, but the beef/brisket tasted like rubber. The sausage tasted like plastic/rubber as well and the ribs didn't have flavor. The sides were ok I guess. Didn't have much flavor also. Maybe I just came in on an off day or later in the day (12ish pm). Also. My total was $35.62. And didn't realize the cashier only gave me back $5. read more

The lady at the register said she didn't eat any of the food there & that's when i should've turned around. Food is terrible- everything, literally everything has no flavor. Customer Service 4/5: I'm a regular here. I've been coming here for about 5 years. The ladies are always nice, and attentive and they work very hard too so I try to avoid bothering them too much. I want to share that in the drive thru Friday 11am ish, I was picking up surprise lunch for my family only to realize after I paid that I had made somebody almost late to work because Ihad their car. So I was trying to get back as soon as I could, and the order for 4 was taking a minute, and I was a little bit frustrated and almost left without my food. And in the midst of all that self created chaos, what a surprise it was to actually get really good food. I got the chicken fried steak, which was pretty good. The green beans were amazing. It was really country cooking comfort food, the way I expected, but never really get from most places and then my cheeseburger order was also good. By the way the cornbread is pretty tasty. So thank you for the grace that the staff had with me because I'm also fresh out of surgery and was just not having the best day. Happy to say that with considerate customer service and really good food. It did help make my day better. I would definitely recommend this place. Upon getting back from our cruise & having some time to kill we asked a local where they recommended to check out & Hungry Farmer was their top suggestion. The menu is a little overwhelming but in a good way. They have a little bit of everything it seems. I was interested in getting the fried pork chop steak but unfortunately it was part of their daily specials. However, their daily specials are strictly sold on the days listed . I decided to go with the Oxtail plate that was another special. What it looked like in the picture & what I got were completely different. There was way more oxtail than I anticipated & that was great! I wasn't too happy with the mac & cheese as well as the sweet potatoes. On the evening of 11/15/2024 I purchased a baked potato topped with a double order of BBQ meat to go. I went home and cut the potato in wedges and froze most of it. Then I set aside a couple of wedges to eat immediately. The meat was bad; it was starting to sour so on Wednesday afternoon (not quit 5 days) I returned to Hungry Framer for a replacement. The manager refused because he said that he wasn't sure if I was being honest. Well, I showed him the receipt of purchase and he was not convinced that they were responsible for the bad food. The potatoes were frozen solid immediately and would probably keep for at least 3 months had the stuffed potato not been spoiled. This place is known for their big baked potatoes. I am not even sure how they get potatoes this big but these are the biggest and best in Houston. In reality... I have to give them 0*ZERO*0 stars!!!! I was a long time happy repeat customer of the hungry Farmer on Crosstimbers. In North side... until recently !! I am so beyond extremely disappointed in this restaurant I can't even explain to you ! I have worked in the food service for of my life, and I'm not perfect but I know what good customer service is . We called in our to-go order , and informed the employee that took the order that we were in Spring and it was a 40 minute drive to get to them . We were well aware that the restaurant closed at 9:00 p.m. , which is why we called in our order to make sure it was ready when we got there . It was 8:00 when we called in the order , and it was 8:43 when we pulled up at the restaurant . As we were standing in line to let somebody know we were waiting for our to go order, we heard the cook tell the people in front of us that they were lucky because they ordered the last baked potatoes . When the lady asked us what we would like we let her know that we had to go order that we had called in 45 minutes earlier . She looked at me , then looked at my boyfriend , then looked at the employee behind her and giggled . She then walked around to the Cook line and whispered something to the Cook as she glared at me over the pass bar , and then return to us to inform us that they voided the order because we waited too long to pick it up . When we told her that we had informed her on the phone that we were 40 minutes away , and her exact words were "no problem, we close at 9:00"... she proceeded to tell us that she couldn't do anything about it because they were out of baked potatoes now and we took too long to get our order. When I asked how to contact the owner, she told me that she would not give me the name or number to contact. This all happened the day before yesterday, I tried to call yesterday she said that the owner wasn't there, I tried to call today and I was told the same thing. Assuming that she recognizes my voice, I think this I think this is absolutely unacceptable! I have been coming to this restaurant for a really long time, it's one of my favorite restaurants in Houston. Which is why I'm willing to drive 40 minutes out of my way to get their food. But the lady that served us that night or rather didn't give us service, looked at me like I was disgusting. And the way that she talked to me and my boyfriend as she kept looking between the two of us was extremely unprofessional. I'm a well-known promoter in Houston, and I rarely do bad reviews. I'd rather been known for having upbeat positive inspiring reviews . But seeing is how I was told that she would not give me a way to contact management or the owner , I really feel as I have no choice . I can honestly say this is the first time I've ever been treated this badly in any Houston restaurant. I've been an nro trainer in a restaurant for years , and my boyfriend is the operations manager for a restaurant chain . Absolutely the worst BBQ place I've been too. It baffles me that this place stays busy and even have lines out the door. I got the 3 meat plate in which I chose spicy sausage, brisket and pork ribs + beans and jambalaya rice. Right off the bat when I opened my box the sausage didn't look right. The texture is off and it didn't even hold it's shape. The taste is absolutely disgusting. It has the meat loaf texture and taste like old dog food. The brisket was fatty and has no flavor. The ribs was medicore and the meat does not fall off the bone. The beans and rice were meh. It didn't taste fresh..For $18 I rather go eat at subway next door and EAT FRESH. This review is solely on the loaded baked potato. I went here with a coworker for lunch and it was my first time here, especially in this area on 45. It's a pretty small BBQ joint, yet popular. Apparently they've been open since 1976 and just recently they had a fire and burned down, but remodeled and are still running. This place kind of reminds me when you're driving on the highway to another city, this BBQ place would be the only place to eat. There's lots of license plates as the decor, bottled caps, and even stuffed deer heads in the restaurant. There's patio seating as well. Moving on to the baked potato. It's a loaded baked potato with your of chopped beef, turkey, ham, or sausage. Also they add in sour cream, green onions, and cheese. It's actually really huge and can feed at least 2 people. I could barely finish it. It wasn't too bad at all. I got the chopped beef and there was a lot of it. It looked so good with the BBQ sauce. The soft drinks are pretty large and cheap. A 20oz is 1.54 while a 32oz is 1.99. They're huge cups and if you fill it with soda, you'll just be drinking a lot of sugar. But for that size, it's worth the price. I was taking pictures to post on yelp and a customer saw me. They told me that this place gets busy on the weekends with long lines and they were so sad that this place closed for renovations after the fire. I guess this place is pretty popular. Would I ever come back? Probably not. But the loaded baked potato was pretty darn good! read more

Well these Texans know how to pull pork and put on the sauce. The pulled pork sandwich and shoestring fries were delicious. The sweet tea was also good. Why not five stars?
