This place is awesome! My friends and I were looking for a place to eat and were about to go to Pappas BBQ, which probably would have been good, but much more expensive than Hungry Farmers. We picked Hungrys based solely on Yelp reviews! Yay!!! It was soooo worth it! They have a parking lot out front (which I am coming to love in Houston because so often you have to valet or parallel park around here). They are also right off 45 which is a plus for me. When we walked in the ambiance was pretty amusing (picnic tables with dead animals everywhere...dead bird with a binky....dead deer with sunglasses.) Okay well at least I thought it was amusing. This place was hoping for a Saturday at 3pm. I ordered my food and before I could pay and fill my cup up with a drink, bam! My order was ready. They have incredibly fast service here! This was true for my friends' orders as well. I ended up getting a huge potato with everything on it and man for $4 this was the biggest potato I have ever seen. I couldn't even finish the whole thing!!! I was very impressed, needless to say. Even in the casual, sit where ever you want, picnic table style set up, the workers would come by and ask if everything was good and if we needed anything. I was actually very impressed by that because that made it more of a restaurant feel without having to pay the restaurant price. It was definitely awesome! read more

When I first moved to Houston from Chicago in 94, this was one of the first places that I was taken to eat for BBQ. To this day their food is still good and the value is great. Just like with any place you will have some who hate it, some that love it and some that are on the fence. IMHO the BBQ potato is the best. I can eat almost 3 meals off of just one potato. The 2 meat plate is enough for myself and my 10 year old son to split. Restrooms are around back, but are clean. Line at lunch time can be long. Bottom line: Stop by and give it a try and review this place yourself, especially if you work downtown/live on the north side. I've been coming here since a kid for the baked potatoes. They are really big and filling. The potatoes could probably feed two but I eat by myself. It's really good plenty of meat and cheese on it. Only reason I don't give 5 star rating is because the meat isn't as good as other bar b a places I've been too. Sometimes the meat has been very dry. This place use to be a staple in my home growing up, so I decided to stop by recently to see if it is just as I remember, and it was just as I remember; a whole lot of meat and a little sauce. It has not gotten any better or any worse than I remember, so I guess that's a good thing. The portions are pretty big so you get a lot of bang for your bucks, but I don't know if that's where you want to spend your hard earned dollars when you get that overwhelming taste for some good barbeque. The sauce is extremely sweet but lacks anything special, and isn't bbq taste determined by it's sauce? The meat is seasoned well, and most of their sides are pretty good just don't order the fries, they are soggy and greasy. So I've had better and if I was asked would I eat there again, I'd say yes mostly because it reminds me of my memories going their as a child. read more

Goode Co. bbq is top notch but expensive. This place is affordable but that should be no excuse for what seemed like mushy and watery brisket. The bbq sauce was watery, sweet, and had very little seasoning. It had no spice to it. So sad. I came here with family while visiting Houston and was pleased with the seating and atmosphere. There definitely is a home-y feeling, albeit being fast food. The portions are pretty large, the menu is extensive, and prices aren't too bad! I had a platter with BBQ chicken, fries, and Mac and cheese. This place gets an automatic 5 stars just for having beef ribs. Not many bbq places will even attempt it. They have homestyle big meals. It's not in a safe area of Houston and you're not going to get awesome service or out of this world food. More like country or farmer foods. It's just a unique place with reasonable prices. Although this is a BBQ joint, I was in the mood for a burger. I order the 1/2 lb Burger plate which came with fries and a drink. The price on the sign was $7.95 however I was charged a dollar more without any explanation. The burger was huge. I couldn't finish the whole thing. I was disappointed that it lacked the smokey flavor I expected from a BBQ place. The overall taste was mediocre at best. The fries were not as crisp as I would have liked them to be. Good food. Great staff. Price is a little hefty but it is to be expected for good tasty BBQ! Their stuffed baked potato is amazing! Yummy desserts! Can get crowded and line out the door, but they try to serve everyone as quick as possible. I grew up in Studewood back in the 80's when Northline Mall was across the street from Hungry Farmer. This place has always been a no frills family restaurant with good prices for the working class. We always get the "Farmer's Supper (4 meats and 2 sides) for $13. The plate always has enough for a second meal. It's not the same as it was in 1975 the meat portions are not generous the ribs are overcooked and small they give you the end pieces they give you the burnt hard overcooked pieces the potato salad is bland and the beans are over seasoned pinto beans. I absolutely love the "Hungry Farmer". A bit of nostalgia inside and out eating areas, great staff, parking stinks, so call ahead, though there is always a long line, it does move quickly. I've tried just about every dish on their menu over a course of 5 years, and I can't give enjoy praise for the down home flavours not to mention the service. If you c all in ahead, (which I always do, only takes 5 mins to get in and out) This time I tried their Fish Plate special, ohhh yum, don't know the kind of fish but it was huge and of course two sides of choice, :$6.00 plus change. I liked the batter on the fish, it was perfectly done. Not overwhelmed with cornmeal of flour.... :) My next episode with Hungry Farmer is to have them Cater, I hear they really put the spread out, and everything is always satisfied.... Well today on my quest to bring you the Best BBQ Houston has to offer today i drove to the North side to a place that has been serving Houston since 1975 to me its these places that shows me Houston is rich in BBQ roots when driving up to the place there was a line out the door and i waited about 30 Mins for my order to be taken, when working at the BBQ place off Airline i would hear customers complain about the prices and a few times i heard them mention Hungry Farmer but i didn't attempt to go. Well I'm really glad i made this drive because the food was great and it is a gem and the prices are really reasonable. i went for the 3 meat platter with 2 sides only costing me $12.95 well that's a lot of food you get opposed to the $22 lb for brisket with no sides you pay else where... The meats i tried were Brisket Ribs and Sausage and my sides were the jambalaya and baked beans, First was the pork ribs and they were very tasty cook to perfection and the meat fell off the bone the Hickory wood smoke favor was in the meat and the sauce they put on top gave it that right kick it needed next was the Brisket i got the flat part and although it was a little over cooked it was just what Texas brisket should taste like with the right favor and smoke ring to prove it sausage was also great and the casing had just the right crack when you bit into it and as for the sides i had to try them seeing that the place i use to work at made them for a price of $13 for jambalaya and $6 for a large cup of beans Well here any side will cost you $3.50 a pint and i must say i was impressed with the taste of the jambalaya and the beans.. If your looking to buy a lb your looking to spend $14.95 lb for brisket $12.95 lb of ribs Links $6.95 lb whole chicken $9.95 and a slab of Beef Ribs will run $18.95. the menu is also impressive and what caught my eye was the Ox tails on a bed of rice... Its no wonder why this place has been around since 1975 giving Houston some great BBQ that wont break your pocket book.. AND LOADED! You couldn't possibly finish one of them by yourself either! The onion rings are beer battered and to die for! I had a bite of my friends carrot cake, one of the best ones I have ever had. I had three bites of my goddaughter's super cold, moist chocolate -CHOCOLATE cake! They are pretty much always packed. Decent BBQ overall. The price was fair for what you got. The moist brisket was tender, but the lean brisket was a bit too hard. The ribs were decent, but didn't quite fall off the bone. The potato salad was a bit too generic, but the chili cheese fries were really good. They charge 25 cents for two pieces of bread, as a side note. Idk why the person taking my order had such a difficult time processing my order but it was very annoying having to repeat myself when she kept asking me if I wanted the exact opposite of what I was trying to order. This place is quite the Gem in a less than reputable neighborhood. A loyal customer for over 10 years now, I'm proud to say nothing has changed here. Whenever I perform my semiannual Houston Restaurant Tour this is always on a short list of places I have to revisit. The baked potato with all the fixins has to be their biggest draw. It took me some years, but as I grew older I was finally able to devour the entire meal in one sitting. Food is super cheap and they don't duck on quality either. Where else can you get a full rack of ribs for $14.95? Far less superior ribs start at $22 elsewhere. Aside from their lame country music, theres nothing you can't love about this place. I ordered a 3 meat plate and my coworker got the catfish plate. Brisket: definitely not smoked. Oven cooked but not w wood which would not qualify this as bbq. Sausage: ground up bologney in sausage casing. Ribs: this is straight boiled, no smoke what so ever. They should call this Hungry Farmer Grill, NOT BBQ!
