Great place, great service, clean and most important great food. I was lucky enough to have my friend bring me, The views of Manhattan are wonderful the fresh air it's great my recommendation is if you gonna come make sure you're taken to the back to eat where are you going to get fresh breeze and great views. The food was like literally fine. It was so below expectations for any kind of mediterranean food. I ordered the lamb skewer. Rice was plain, the "salad" was just lettuce, and the roast vegetables were literally still raw and barely charred. They charge for the tiniest ramekins of sauce and the hot sauce was actually just tomato sauce with no spice whatsoever. The service wasn't rude but it was terribly slow and inattentive. The table beside us left before they even got their food because of the service. Our glasses of water got filled once and never again touched or refilled while we were eating the dry chicken and lamb. They have NO PITA! Even when ordering the babaganoush, we got no pita! We ordered fries and they never came. Weird, disappointing experience. Thanks to my husband it was still a great date night. read more

New favorite place!! Byob, fresh delicious food, and amazing service. Tried two dishes we have never had at a Turkish restaurant before and they were AMAZING! The manti was light little dumplings full of veal and onion. The yogurt sauce was full of spices. Had the hunkar begendi with lamb. Typically I dont like egglant, but it was delicious!! Simply delicious!! I was invited to a birthday celebration at this restaurant. The restaurant is located on a busy street with street parking. Wasn't hard to find something close. My bf is very picky and was worried he wouldn't enjoy the food, thankfully everything that was offered was simply delicious. The celebration was in the back of the restaurant in a private room overlooking NYC. The room had all windows, very beautiful. The food was brought out as family style. We first had warm bread, 4 dipping sauces (hummus, taziki and eggplant), cucumber tomato onion salad, French fries, fried calamari, zucchini pancake, 4 different types of kebabs with white rice and three samples of their desserts. Everything tasted so fresh and they even came back with seconds on the zucchini pancakes, SCORE! The restaurant is BYOB for those who want to drink and the waitresses were super friendly. Visited 01/12/2019 Ah, yet another wonderful Middle Eastern restaurant for us to visit. We are trying to cut back on portions and servings, which isn't easy with all the amazing appetizers Middle Eastern restaurants often have, but we did manage to settle on 3. The Hummus, the Tarama and the Lebneh (Lebni?)... All wonderful. The mixed grill for 2 (lamb shish kebab, chicken shish kebab, adana kebab, kofte kebab and chicken adana or doner). Our new favorite Turkish restaurant! We tried a bit of everything and ended up with quite a few leftover containers...the HUGE mixed kabob platter was super tender and well seasoned and the hunkar begendi delicious. We had a giant feta salad that we couldn't finish and one of the best calamari apps I have had in awhile - it was lightly battered, perfectly tender and had a different seasoning and sauce that was hard to pinpoint the flavors. Mixed dip apps and cigar borek are always solid choices. We also tried 5 desserts - kazandibi, rice pudding, a layered wheat dessert with honey, special apricot dessert, and a pistachio crepe dessert. My favorites were kazandibi and rice pudding. This is a very good Turkish Restuarant. I recently went here to celebrate my friends birthday. We usually go here for his birthday every year. There is a very nice private type room in the back of the restaurant. Unfortunately this year it was unavailable. This restaurant is great the prices are decent and it's byob. After ownership changed, it's not the same place anymore. Much smaller portions and nonexistent service. Servers are clearly not trained but also they seem absolutely clueless as to what usually goes on in a restaurant and what might be expected. Last time we were there it was a very strange experience....food was still good but the interactions with the "waiters" were exhausting. read more

I must say...this restaurant is on point! For this review, I want to focus specifically on the dessert that I had that was just out of this world. Their Turkish custard (Kazandibi) was one of the best I have had. I wasn't that hungry so I didn't order a main course and just stuck to dessert. Also, I should note that it is a nice BYOB spot. If you can, ask to be seated in the back on the deck. It has a phenomenal view of NYC and the stadium. read more

Wow, I can't believe it's been a year since our last visit! We had actually tried returning a few times over the last 6 months but were always unable to find parking. In any case, we got there early for us, right around 6:00 pm last night and were seated immediately. On arrival the front dining room was perhaps 1/3 full but by the time we finished, it was almost completely full. Despite this the service level was quite good all the way through. I started with the Chicken Noodle Soup and the wife the Panned Eggplant. First the soup. I admit to being a bit disheartened when it arrived because it seemed to have a LOT of celery and I am generally not a big fan of celery in soups. Usually because it's not done right. Not the case here. This soup was excellent! Perfectly cooked, welled seasoned. I lapped up the last bit with the supplied bread so as to not miss a drop. The eggplant was also quite good. 8 or 9 panned fried slices served with roasted tomato and peppers and a light yogurt sauce. The wife loved it. For our main course we both choose the Chicken Kabob based on our previous experience with it. If anything, it was even better this time. Perfectly cooked and seasoned with a marinade that added a nice flavor without being overbearing. And again, served with what is probably the best white rice I have had in a restaurant. For desert we again decided to share the Baklava as we remembered it was quite good from the last visit. Both of us stuck with good old H2O this time so none of the beverage issues this time around. As I said in my previous review, Mediterranean isn't really my thing so I am not in a position to compare it to other similar restaurants. I can say that we got an excellent meal at a great price and walked out completely satisfied. read more

We ate here this weekend it was quite enjoyable. I've been here once before and thought the food was tasty, yet the service was slow. Despite this, I returned again and found that the service was attentive and friendly this time around. Started with meal with hummus and the zucchini pancakes, which were delicious! I had the stuffed cabbage, turned out to be a nice choice. We ended the meal with baklava and Turkish coffee. The coffee was great, but also kept me up all night haha. They had ample last minute seating on a Saturday night for our large group. The staff was very accommodating for our six month old son. He fit perfectly in the high chair provided. Everything was amazing. I want to point out that the chicken shish kabob was juicy. That's not an easy feat to accomplish. Not a bad place to take a lady friend. Food has great flavor. My order of the doner kebab was good, but I had to ask for the garlic yogurt sauce. This place earns only three stars due to poor service. It took an incredibly long time for anything to come out (The bread that they seem to give everybody is good, but took almost 30 min from when we sat down to come by.) Place was understaffed for a Friday evening. If I manage to make it down there again, I hope a proper staff level is kept. read more

Lunch specials here are great and affordable. For $11 you get a soda, appetizer & lunch. The hummus and bread are really good so definitely give it a shot. The skewered lamb is tender, moist and bursting with flavor. Chicken kebab is great as well, nicely grilled with a unique charcoal flavor. Most entrees are served with white or brown rice and a mini salad. As far as service, its terrible even if theres 1 table or 10 its always the same. I'd suggest takeout its a dollar cheaper & you don't need to tip or experience bad service. They have a room in the back to enjoy the ambience of New York that's open year round. I went her for the first time recently. It seems to be a great spot, and I can't wait to go back. I was dining with a large group for a friend's birthday. All of the food we ordered was delicious, and it's also BYOB. The group ordered a variety of different appetizers, entrees, and some people even ordered dessert. The turkish coffee was very good! As regular customers, we often come without reservations and never had a problem. This past Saturday we showed up at 6:30pm without a reservation and were promptly and rudely admonished by server John who told us "Next time make a reservation!" and then proceeded to seat us at a very dark table in the corner in the back dining room which is largely unfinished (sort of like a treehouse). Well that pretty much ruined my appetite for their otherwise delicious menu, and we left. Interesting thing is that at other times when we called to make reservations we were told they weren't needed. Go figure. read more

I've been going to Hunkar for many years and just loved everything about it - staff, food, ambiance; however, I was there beginning of April on a Sunday afternoon and noticed the regular staff were not there and the food was just not as good. Thinking because it was an afternoon maybe they were coming in later. I went again, last evening and again no familiar faces to be seen. I asked the waitress if it was under new management and she confirmed YES. She said it was the same cook, but that was not true as you can see the kitchen staff and definitely not the same. Food was just okay and not nearly as good as previous owners. I will miss them greatly and so disappointed in the new management. read more
