Got here on a warm day to get something cool. Huntley Dairy Mart is a classic town staple and has been a summer destination forever. It has ice cream and slushies among the cool treats. Also hot greasy things like burgers. There's not a whole lot to choose from, but they have the basics it seems. Be ready for a long line. If not that, be ready for no open tables. There seems to be a bigger crowd later, and on weekends. Came to get a few cold items. There's a few that are unique. It's $3 for a medium Slushie, and among the flavors is strawberry. That's not one that's found typically. Points off for not putting strawberries on top like they show it on Facebook. The actual food is mostly typical greasy things. Limited vegetarian choices. There's burgers, hot dogs, and the basic type of stuff you can imagine. For sure summer is the best time to come. It's one of those places that closes for the season. Service was good, there were two young women you can tell that one of them was good at what she does, she made three of the same frenzies from my order and the previous person who was in line before myself. You order from the outside and I believe you order food on the inner side for food...having two different sides to order from. So we were passing through Huntley and stopped by here. I couldn't find it on Yelp (fast enough), so I think I was coming in with unbiased eyes. From the cold side, the large items (shakes, drinks, etc) were large (a little pricey)! On the hot side, I just got apps (like curly fries, 'shrooms, curds). They were fine too, but also on the pricey side. There was a steady stream of customers, little league teams, etc that were passing through and getting something. I did notice the place looked a little run down. The seating, the walls, even the sign was all a little beat up. But I thought maybe that was some of its natural charm. When I finally found the place on Yelp (naturally, as I am posting the review, right?), it was a like a little time capsule. Many people are expressing how it's not like how it 'used to be'. Huntley Dairy Mart looks sort of nostalgic like carhops on roller skates would be serving you. This place is a nice and lively spot when the weather is warm, especially during the summer. I only had a soft serve vanilla ice cream cone. They were out of butterscotch dip so I opted to go with cherry. Not a fan of the dip, it hardens after the ice cream is dipped in it and it had sort of a waxy texture when eating it. There are plenty of desert and food selections on the menu which is nice. "Huntley Dairy Mart", usually referred to simply as "Dairy Mart" is an iconic and historic Lake Michigan regional frozen custard and local 'Street-Food' stand (like the places that my family used to stop at for a local snack on our driving to points north in Wisconsin). Dairy Mart is basically a mid-sized plank-board box, covered in hand painted menu-signs, with upper windows so can see the people making the food, and a parking lot with a strip of makeshift roof running down the middle and some cheap plastic picnic table & bench units under it. The small building has an order window and a pick-up window. The whole thing looks like it was built on the carcass of an old A&W Drive In place, where girls on roller skates brought trays of food to hook onto your Chrysler's open window. But the food & frozen custard here is as Midwest-Classic as it gets. And from teens to adults to grandparents, people come here from many miles away to show their friends, families, and children this place and to share this experience that they had from their own youth. Thus, there are always lines. This is truly a fun "See & Do" place to grab a cone and a dog. Huntley Dairy Mart is a staple of Huntley and new owners are doing a great job. This is a cute former drive-in fast food restaurant. It's not pretending to be a health food or fancy spot. They offer delicious burgers, hot dogs and great ice cream creations. Always friendly staff and they have picnic tables to eat outside. No indoor seating. 4 vs 5 only because prices are a bit above what you'd expect, but it's location on Rt 47 near Algonquin Rd is a prime spot and don't doubt is an expensive parcel to own/run a business. read more

Went to the Dairy Mart on 5/3/2025. I ordered 1 burger and 2 hot dogs with NOOOOOOOO onions. All three items had onions. The burger looked like some of it stuck to the grill because about half of it was there. Took the hot dogs back for new, recieved the dogs and now the onions are under the bun between the wrapper and bun. It has gone way downhill. I can 100% say I won't be back plus my brother lives in Huntley, and he hasn't been in years and now he won't for sure. read more

I've been wanting to check out this place for ages and I'm happy I finally did! The nostalgia of the old days is still present in everything the Dairy Mart does, from the food to the decor, and even the service will bring you back to '53 when it opened. Some positives... great prices, nice tastes, social atmosphere. They are outdoors, which makes them pet-friendly, and they even have dessert options for your dog! Some negatives... it can be hard to find parking during the busy times (the after dinner rush, and the hot weekends), the cars are fast and loud on 47, and the food & desserts were good, but not necessarily unique or crave-worthy. That said, the positives outweigh the negatives and we'll definitely be back here. There are so many more things to try and so perhaps down the road, I'll find that go-to must-have dish! When that happens, I'll be sure to upgrade this rating to a 5! read more

Dairy Mart is just not the same as it once was. The new owners have drastically increased food prices, well beyond inflation on most of there items. They now charge for lettuce, tomato, etc which will quickly drive up the cost of your burgers. The single cheeseburger will now cost you approximately around $8-$9 (with toppings) for what used to cost less than $5. The quality of the food has also decreased. The fries and onion rings were overly greasy with little to no salt. The burger was dry and lacked the flavor that the old smash burgers had. The ice cream and shakes were still good but no longer come with whipped cream and a cherry. I just urge you if you are looking for the nostalgic dairy mart you remember from your childhood, you may be disappointed. read more

A nostalgic, non-chain, local ice cream shop always holds a place in my heart. We finally pulled over for a quick dessert. When driving by, one can clearly tell that its a local favorite, (at least on summer weekends). Appearance wise, this place does not look like it has changed in the past 40 to 50 years...and I like it! No over the top presentations for IG reels, just a decent array of ice cream, sundaes, shakes, slushes, and "frenzies" which I'm assuming are their version of a "concrete" or "blizzard"..you get the pic. They also serve hot food. As per the menu, they have plenty of flat top griddle and deep fried fare such as burgers, hot dogs, coneys, tamales, sausage and Italian beef sandwiches, and more (see pic). Grill was closed by the time I got there so I'll be back to stuff face later. I have a review up here from about 4 years ago, I need to put another review on here from my experience tonight. ... Food was great as always, since the new ownership (good thing, if you know why you know....) burgers are great, fries are great, hot dog for my son was great, chicken sandwich my older son was great also. I do have a pretty significant bone to pick with this establishment though... FREE REFILLS? We asked at the ordering counter while we were ordering if there was free refills... I think it was the owner that was taking our order responded with "sure" which is a weird answer right off the bat... right? The word sure when asking a yes or no question doesn't make much sense to me.... Anyways... my son went up for his second free refill... and he said "sorry man I can only do one..." Are your profit margins that razor thin that you can't provide free refills? Something that has been a standard at restaurants my whole childhood, teenage and adult years? It's been kind of a given at any restaurant that you give free refills, it's a standard now... its something you really don't even have to ask anymore, you can just kind of assume you get free refills. It rubs me the wrong way... not to mention my "free refill" was loaded with ice, so it was bout 5 sips of soda and it was empty... do you know how that makes your customers feel? For a family of four, we must of spent 40 to sixty dollars on food.... We did not go cheap whatsoever, cheese fries for 1 of us, kids meal, double cheeseburger, another cheeseburger and a chicken sandwich... it makes no sense that you would not give free refills for spending that kind of money... do you know how cheap soda is? Do you realize how many restaurants offer free refills? It really boggles my mind... to the point where I am a little offended to spend my hard earned money somewhere where you can't even refill my drink more than once, with 40 cents worth of soda (if that). Rookies? Free refills, McDonald's? Free refills, tacos locos? Free refills, Burger King, pub 47, good fellas, chipotle, do I even need to continue? 40 to 60 dollars on a family of four, and that's where you draw the line.... A free refill... When something is minted an institution, it can start to operate based solely on its name and reputation. Rest assured, that is not the case at the Dairy Mart. The menu is a mile and a half long, so be prepared to stand while your brain works out the best possible choice, especially if you don't get out to Huntley very often. With separate windows for food orders or ice cream orders, it's clear they know how to work through the crowds, though obviously depending on what you order, your wait may be longer than those who order after you. Take a seat on the bench or snag a table while you wait. Dairy Mart has really good burgers and excellent tamales. The fries are also good. I've not had their ice cream. For those not familiar with the place, it is a walk up window. There are some tables outside, but no indoor seating. The employees are always friendly and the service is good. Because everything is made when you order, it takes a short while to get your food, but it is worth the wait. The only negative is the noise from the traffic on Route 47. read more

Dairy Mart is delicious, hands down. It is a rather small walk-up that has a surprisingly large menu for such a wee little burger shack (with amazing shakes/malts plus a little of everything else). My son dated an employee from Dairy Mart for two years. Not naming names, but two years of free burgers & shakes was rather lovely. I have been going to the Huntley Dairy mart since I was a child, now that it has changed owners, they have increased the pricing of their food (ridiculous prices) and I asked for a menu and she said they did not have one to give out, but I could take a picture of the laminated one.......duh 1 single Cheeseburger and 1 Dble chz, it was over $15.00, I asked for mustard, ketchup and pickle on my single burger and there was just a spot of each on the bun, nothing to taste. I could go elsewhere and get a meal for what they charge, totally insane pricing. I will not be going back there. The burger was over cooked and dry and so disappointing. I've been here a few times now. We came on the Fourth of July during fireworks and got a front row seat to the show over at Diecke Park and had ice cream while we watched. It was perfect. Plus we had a great parking spot. It's located in Huntley so about 45 min to an hour from the city. Right by 90 though if you are traveling through. They offer a variety of different things. If you like fried food, this is the place to come! They have bosco sticks(cheese filled breadsticks), ice cream, burgers, hot dogs, mozzarella sticks, all kinds!!! Very cheap. Friendly service! It's usually a younger crowd who works here. (I worked at an ice cream shop too when I was in high school during the summers and loved it) I've noticed a lot of locals like this place too. Local favorite! Please keep in mind this place opened in 1953. Looks old, but that is part of the charm. Any spring/summer weekend you will catch the local baseball/softball teams standing outside trying to get truckers and cars to honk (super cute). The ice cream is good and so is the food. It's a small burger/dog place, so yeah it's not gourmet, but it's def not trash. Prices are pretty cheap and there are deals on food. Usually high school kids working, but they do an excellent job. Parking is limited, but there is a lot and street parking next to it. Close to Deicke Park so makes for nice stop after a day of play. I would choose this place over Dairy Queen any day! read more

The "Dairy Mart" in Huntley, IL, about 50 miles west of Chicago, is one such local institution. Serving all the Chicago favorites, hot dogs, sausage, Italian beef, burgers, fried dinner plates, and fountain treats, the Dairy Mart is busy most times of day, most days of the year, and food is cooked to order. I went with a cheeseburger and tots, and the hand-formed patty had a nice char from a flattop and was nicely seasoned (I'm guessing a little Season Salt and a little onion powder, but I could be wrong) (and frequently am), and the deep fried tots were done to perfection. Local establishment been frequenting for years. Was on the way home after a day of riding. Decided would stop for some ice cream indulgence. It was 10 minutes after seven, closing time. Still serving customers and said they were closed and wouldn't take my order for a simple malt. I guess 10 minutes after closing time is inconvenient to serve a few more customers that just arrived. I guess they don't need the business that bad. Most times we come to the Dairy Mart, it's for ice cream. Occasionally we'll also order food (which is good). But the ice cream is the best! My favorite is a 1/2 & 1/2 cone with sprinkles. YES, PLEASE CAN I HAVE ANOTHER? It's the smallest little joint ever, but totally worth it. It's typically swarming with people in the summer time there for ice cream --- especially sports teams.
