I was in town on business and looking for a good donut shop. I was excited to find this place since there really are not any other choices in the immediate area. The shop is super cool and open 24hr. I went in about 6:30 AM on a Tuesday and there was no one else there. The young lady behind the counter was very friendly and helpful. I saw other reviews saying the staff was not friendly, but I found the opposite. The selection is overwhelming and I decided on three choices. 1-an old fashioned. It was a solid representation of this classic donut. Very good. 2-MVP. It is a white cake donut with icing and caramel. Great cake donut and a nice level of frosting. 3-Streusel. We checked out Hurts on New Years Eve, and there was definitely a line. However, it moved at a decent clip. The decor is nice, with that modern industrial style that's really popular right now. We ordered the Little Dirty, which is 6 donuts of your choice for $10, and we ordered a Maple Bacon Donut on the side for $3 (it's pretty large). We thought the pricing was right in line for the quality of the donuts and the area they are in. I honestly think the people complaining about the high prices are probably not from the metro area, as the donut prices are pretty standard compared to most other local bakeries in the area. The donuts we bought were the Maple Bacon Donut, Reeses Puff, Peanut Butter Cup, Old Fashioned, Caramel Delight, Salted Caramel, and the Cookies and Cream. The base donuts were all very good quality and tasted great. As with every single other cereal donut I've ever had, the Reeses Puffs were stale. There is going to be a huge market and profit for the person out there who finally unlocks the secret of keeping cereal on cereal donuts from getting stale. Overall, I liked the experience at Hurt's Donuts. I love how you can watch them make the donuts through the glass window and the staff is always up beat. When there is a long line, they make sure to let you know how thankful they are for you to be there. The types of donuts they have are fun and quirky. Little Timmy, Flintstone, and Worms in Dirt are my favorites. I will admit, I do feel like I've been taken over by a sugar overload when I have a donut from here. Been to Hurts Donut a couple of times now since it's opened, pretty good I highly recommend the Andes Mint Donut. However for as hyped up as this place was/is it definetly has it's downfalls 1. Seating: the way the seats are set up it makes it awkward to sit and eat where there is a long. Line almost out the door, as people are just staring at ur food the whole time. This makes the place unwelcoming. I think it would have been better if Hurt's was a bigger, standalone building this seating issue would not be a problem 2. Clientele: this place is a total high school hangout spot. I thought that because it was near the bars the younger crowd would shy away, but it's actually the opposite and it's annoying. every time I've been there is been packed with loud high schoolers and that creates a bad vibe 3. Price: the $12 for a dozen where they pick your donuts vs the $15 for a dozen where you get to pick your donuts is by far the stupidest pricing scheme I have ever seen. read more

This is the one place where you can walk up and say, "I think we're going to get a little dirty" and not get kicked out. (That's a half dozen that you select.) Variety? They have plenty of that! Popularity? Still today, well after opening there was a line almost to the door that took quite awhile to get through. However, unlike most places, long johns are not included in a dozen or half-dozen. This is a deal breaker! You must pay for all donuts individually unless six or 12 of those you want are all non-long johns, ensuring a higher cost. Long johns are the staple for hungry donut consumers! Also, unlike many niche donut shops where you can get cream filling in long johns or at least request it...no. They also were not soft on the inside as a true fresh donut should be. Texture-wise none of the seven donuts we bought were any different from what you'd get at the discount bin at Hy-Vee after 6 PM. For variety or novelty, sure. But unless I can get a long john cream filled or included in a pack, nope. If you want a real fresh textured donut with lots of variety and still customization, take the short drive to Ankeny for Chu Chu's donuts. That's where you'll find us on our next donut run. Impressed with my first experience here. The long lines are a drag but b/c they're open 24/7, it's not too hard to get in there during their off-peak times. Depends on the day but your best bet is probably early morning because the place will still have a line into the evening some days. The diversity and originality of their donut selection is 2nd to none! They take many great sounding desserts and create donut concoctions from those. I had the oreo cheesecake and it was delicious. The pie crust with the cheesecake filling tasted amazing; the donut was not too dry. There's no shortage of cool donuts to pick from but from what I've heard the more standard offerings like the glazed are great too. The dining area itself is what you'd expect. Open and spacious and it is semi-loud b/c it's usually busy. If you're a coffee connoisseur, this is not your place. They have plenty of bottled drinks to pick from but don't expect to be able to order any cappuccino/latte's like you would at Dunkin. We also get these donuts from time to time at work and they aren't all eaten right away by our small team...but they even taste great the next day. I'm giving it two stars for effort. This place has no housekeeping whatsoever. I watched a worker go clean two of the door windows and walk by every table that had crumbs and cream smeared on it. It's really gross. We weren't greeted, just said "Over here!" The workers really look like they are having the worst day ever. My daughter is a doughnut monster, so we had to check this place out. We've now been there 3 times, and can decidedly say we LOVE Hurts! My favorite donuts are the Homer and the Caramel Delite. The maple bacon is delicious, and HUGE. The staff were friendly and helpful. They made some recommendations. Wish there was a menu on the wall before you get up to the front - you can't see all the donuts until you are close enough to order. There are a few tables of you want to dine in. I guess for what it is Hurts Donut is an exciting addition to the Des Moines food scene. My mom raves about their apple fritters so I went yesterday afternoon to fetch said fritter. They were all out. Granted, it was 4 in the afternoon and I hear the fritters are a hot ticket item so I understand. I didn't want to leave empty handed so I got a Jesus (cake donut, icing, caramel drizzle and cinnamon sugar dusting), a cherry glazed and an old fashioned. The girl at the counter wasn't super friendly or enthused to be helping me so that was a turn off. This is place is supposed to be all the rage! Employees should be hyped and happy to help. I split and shared the donuts with my parents and I wasn't crazy about any of them. The Jesus donut was pretty good and done properly. The old fashioned was nothing to write home about. The cherry glazed was tasty but a little underdone. I went back this morning to try to get an apple fritter for my mom's birthday today. It was dead in there when I went yesterday afternoon--not a hot time for donuts ha. But today I opened the door to find the back of the dreaded long line everyone else has mentioned. It sucked. But when I got to the counter, luckily the fritter gods were smiling down on me and I procured two of these fried glazy treats. The woman behind the counter was much nicer and more helpful than the girl from the previous day. The donut itself I found to be a little too dense for my liking. But I can look past that when they put just about everything under the moon on it. We were so excited to visit Hurts! We're from out of state and have heard so many wonderful things about this place and we were not let down! We each enjoyed one donut a piece in the store and both couples ordered a dozen donuts to put in our iced up cooler for the long drive home. So much good stuff to say I don't know where to start. How about: open 24 hours a day, every day of the year. In addition to being the perfect place for a late night stop, it also means you don't usually have to worry that they are going to run out of your favorite (although it happens once in a great while). All of the donuts are over the top and delicious, but I come here specifically for the giant apple fritters. Most of the apple fritters I find these days don't actually seem to contain any apple in them or are sort of burnt. Hurts fritters are the real deal and big enough to be their own meal. On top of all that, it's a fun happy place with amusing donut names and decor. read more

I went to Hurts on New Year's Eve expecting a line, and as I expected there was one. Even though the line was long, the donuts and customer service were amazing. We got the donuts for the next morning meaning they were out for longer than they usually would be, but they were surprisingly moist. They donuts we tried were: peanut butter Oreo, mint Oreo, dirt worm, cosmic brownie, slim shady(has m&m's on it which is a reference to the rapper Eminem if you didn't know), Reese's puffs, Nutella, Bart Simpson(butter finger), the Jesus, the Homer( just frosted to look like the donuts homer eats in the Simpsons), and apple pie. We got the dirty dozen allowing us to pick which ones we wanted, although I don't get why you need to pay 3 more dollars to pick your own, luckily they were worth it. All of the donuts had great flavor and were moist but my favorites were the Jesus and the dirt worm. The Jesus donut is a regular cake donut with vanilla frosting, Carmel stripes and cinnamon sprinkled on top. Which makes it taste like a better version of a cinnamon sugar donut you would get at a fair. The dirt worm, pretty self explanatory, a chocolate cake donut, chocolate frosting, Oreos, and a gummy worm. Definitely a lot of chocolate, so if you love Oreos and chocolate like me, this donut is for you. Another thing to note is that if the cereal topped donuts sit out for long the cereal will lose its crunch. The service was great especially since they were really busy. We were allowed to take our time choosing and were always treated well. I will definitely come back when I feel like a fancy donut treat. read more

We got a half dozen donuts. The donuts were reasonably priced, $11 for gourmet donuts. I really enjoyed the crowed favorite-- The Jesus. But I do not recommend getting the Mud Pie donut, it looks good for pictures, but the texture was a let down. We got a Strudel donut as well that was one of my favorites as well as the Recess! I went here again today, for the third time. Ordered a donut each for myself and nephew, coffee for me, chocolate milk for him, and a $10 waaaah-mbulance. Long story short, they put 25 cents worth of stuff on a 50 cent donut and charge $2.50 for it. Nothing special, not even great donuts, but my 5 year old nephew loves them, so we go. Here's the thing, the first time I ordered coffee, they didn't give me a cup. I declined a receipt, so when I went back and asked for my cup, I was out of luck. No proof I paid for it. Fine, my fault, no big deal. Second time I got the cup, but there was no coffee, so I asked for some, but they never got around to making it. Never one to make a scene or speak to people when angry or disappointed, I left. Today, the third time, they came out and got the dispenser, made the coffee. But none of the 6 or 7 employees there at the time. Including a teenage male wearing a bath robe and Angel wings (could that be his job? He didn't do anything else.) could be bothered to Bring the coffee coffee out. So 3 visits, no coffee. The employees are friendly enough, but there is no sense of follow through or taking care of customers. I probably won't go back. The average donuts with 25cents worth of stuff on them aren't enough to ignore the lack of service or value in this weird formula. read more
