I was in the slowest checkout line I have ever been in. I'm all for friendly but I expect some semblance of speed when there are several people in line. With the prices Hy-vee charges I also expect bagger. It took 15+ minutes to get thru a line that at best should have been 5. No bagger and a clerk that commented on every purchase. read more

Never having been to Wisconsin, I was pleasantly surprised to find this clean, spacious and well organized store. Virtually a one-stop shop for all your grocery needs with a number of "bonus" points including a photo lab, US Postal Service, wine & spirits, bulk foods, Caribou Coffee counter, hot food & deli, plus a drive-thru pharmacy. They even had some Badger gear. If I wasn't in such a hurry to catch a plane i could have spent the whole afternoon there. read more

I am very particular with customer service. Being "born and bred" in retail, i expect great results. My first visit to HYVEEs was on March 20th,2011, accompanied by my 79 yr old mother and my 21 yr old son. I was actually excited and the chef in me is always pursuant to great finds. Upon entering I came into the produce department. Seemed to be a nice selection but the prices were scary. Not entirely the retailers fault i am sure. We perused the isles for items that were needed at my mom's request, and I must say the demographics are not very easily navigated. I did alot of pricing comparisons also, and I must say there were few deals to be found if any. Especially on SEAFOOD. wow they were way overpriced. The worst part of our experience was when my mom needed to purchase a Cranberry Juice. We entered the food isle where the juice was located and there were two employees, one holding a device, chatting about work. My mom was having a hard time locating a Cranberry Juice Only Brand. I was trying to help and the horrible thing is, is that this woman employee (the other employee had moved on at this time) heard us in our plight and was standing no more than 4 feet from us, and never acknowledged or asked if we needed assistance after at least a full three minutes of our obvious scanning back and forth amongst the shelves.That was just plain bad customer relation. I realize grocery stores are not a typical full service establishment, but she did work for HYVEE, not a scanner from an outside company. She could have assisted or been aware and at least said something. I never experienced one employee during my visit who smiled or looked the least bit friendly. It would have been nice to at least get a "hello" somewhat like the HYVEE commercial portrays. I won't be back for the reasons of way overpricing and lack of customer service. I will not be giving them my business if I can help it. They sell live lobsters and I HATE them for it. This is total animal abuse and yes, the lobsters do feel the unthinkable and excruciating pain. Sometimes for up to fifteen minutes... I spend tons of money buying gourmet food and they would make a mint off of me if they would stop this. I have inquired many times to no avail. So I will shop at the lovely Woodman's. If you disagree with them selling live, innocent animals, please call Hy-vee at (608) 244-4696 and tell them. The lobsters are not fed (completely starved to keep the tanks clean), oxygen deprived, their claws are shackled and they are tremendously in a weakened and abused state. Then handed to uncaring customers who are going to murder them. I do not want Hy-veevil's phony smiles pretending it is OK. Do NOT get your wedding flowers here. We specifically said no hot pink - our centerpieces were full of hot pink carnations. We asked for reds, dark reds, golds, oranges with touches of royal blue and even gave pictures. No dark reds at all, lots of hot pink, fuschia and purple? And they looked like a child designed them. Absolutely nothing special. For $65 a centerpiece (and we supplied the containers) they were mostly carnations and roses and a very basic design. Very disappointed. Spend your wedding flower money elsewhere. read more

I'll stop here after work, when it's pretty late at night and grab a few things from the organic foods section. I like that they have all of the organic stuff in one location. I really like that they sell essential oils here as well! They have a nice floral section as well. I don't really come here as often as I used to. I just had one bad experience and that was the last time I ever did a big shopping trip here. My husband and I got some meat and seafood from here and the smell wasn't right... we bought some crab and it smelled terrible. I couldn't even put it in the steamer because it just wasn't as fresh as they claimed it to be. We bought some meat here and it had a smell to it too! When meat has a rotting scent... it's probably not safe to cook it. It wasn't like I had these items sitting out for days or for a while before I cooked it. I bought them and attempted to cook them the same day. So if I just want a few items that I know HyVee has, I will stop in! If I need to load up on some essential oils and cannot make it downtown, I stop here as well! read more

I don't really like this store. They are constantly changing around their produce section, so every time I go there it takes longer than it should to find what I want. And, I keep finding flies and mold in their fruit. There prices are also pretty wonky. Milk is a great example. With the Swiss Valley milk, 2% runs about 2.75 for a gallon one week, bumps up to 2.89 a few weeks later, then gets "discounted" to 2.75 in their ad, which will say the usual price is 2.99. Not cool. The only thing I like about them, is they are close to where I live and aside from their fruit I can usually find what I want. read more

So this review is mainly for their catering guy Dan. Hyvee catered our tent wedding reception and I had rave reviews from our guests about how great the food was. It was pouring rain but They did a great job regardless! They were so unbelievably easy to work with and they modified the menu options to our liking, even did some special request items. The catering manager showed up on site for setup and his team was great. They had a bartender making old fashioneds for the guests and Dan made two plates and served my husband and I at a sweetheart table; because he knew I was so busy I probably wouldn't have eaten otherwise. It was sad when the leftovers were gone. Ha! read more

Really good lunch buffet...and they have a military discount. Lots to choose from. Big drink selection, generous portions, can't expect much more from a grocery store. The chinese food is delicious and the fish buffet is very delish. Of coure, I am mainly reviewing the buffet, but there was a helpful smile in every aisle...that's for sure. read more

We go here for the hot bar. The grocery store has a good selection overall, especially of cheese and organic packaged products but it is very expensive. For that reason we do not buy groceries from here, for that I go to Woodmans, the Willy Street Co-op or the Jenny Street Market. Their hot bar has a wide selection. We often get a bucket of fried and roasted chicken and a few sides. Prices for the hot bar aren't too high either. Mind you, the food is not stellar but for a grocery store hot bar it is fairly high quality. I've gotten bakery a few times as well but I'm always disappointed (it's alright for a grocery store but just isn't that well done overall). Hy-Vee works if you're looking to bring something home for dinner but don't have time to cook. read more

Holy cow, the liqueur selection in this place is INCREDIBLE! I was in Madison working and I decided to stop at Hy-Vee for a bottle of wine to bring back to the room. I must have wandered around for about a half hour just taking it all in. The prices rock too, compared to Chicago at least. FLORAL DEPARTMENT: We had the flowers for our wedding done at HyVee and could not be happier with how they turned out. We worked with Gina and she did a great job of helping us select what we wanted and the flowers turned out absolutely spectacular. Our original plan for centerpieces fell through so two days before the wedding I called Gina to ask if she could set aside some bunches of random flowers (they didn't have to be arrangements, just whatever flowers she could scrounge up). I knew it was last minute and too late to order something, so I told her I didn't care what color or style they were, I would take whatever they had. Gina went above and beyond to pick out and set aside flowers that matched our colors and style and as a result our centerpieces were beautiful. And they were good quality- they lasted more than a week past the wedding. We would highly recommend Gina for any wedding or event flowers!! Our only criticism is that they are not very flexible for people who have regular day jobs. Typically their consultants for weddings are only available on weekdays until 4pm, which makes it nearly impossible for people with jobs to meet with them. We lucked out and managed to get an appointment on a Saturday, but my understanding is that is a rare occurrence- and they called to change our appointment a couple of times because they realized they weren't going to have a consultant available. The other issue is that they do not give you a price estimate right away- we had to wait over a week for it to be emailed to us, and when it was past the date we were supposed to get it, I called to ask about it and was very rudely told "We're busy, yesterday was Mother's Day, you know." I get that's a busy day, but we were supposed to have the estimate a few days BEFORE mother's day and if we're spending several hundred dollars on flowers, I would hope they could be a little more accommodating. Luckily the price turned out to be very reasonable and much cheaper than other florists, but I wasn't happy that we had to wait so long just for an estimate. read more

My wife and I are regulars at Hy-Vee primarily because of their proximity to our condo. That said they have a great liquor department and supply awesome steaks from the Amana Colonies. They also employee chef in residence David Martineau. If you ever dined at the Edgewater Hotel in the 90's you've undoubtedly enjoyed his tableside steak Diane or his flaming tableside desserts. read more

GOOD deli meats and cheeses hot deli serves lotsa decent comfort food take-and-bake pizzas (they have a pretty good gluten-free crust) chinese deli is as good as any cheapo chinese restaurant, and a lot cheaper bulk M&M dispensers! Better selection of regular groceries than Copps house-brand frozen veggies are pretty good BAD regular groceries are kinda expensive, like Copps-level produce is hit-or-miss (but that's true everywhere) ice cream selection is not great They have a Caribou Coffee (eastside store only) read more

Went to the new hy-vee the other day, wasn't that impressed there prices where that of cubs or copps. It cost $5 for a big box of cheerios (on sale), at woodman's its only $2.50 same goes for Camerons organic coffee that I love was $9 a pound, at woodman's its $5.69 a pound and that's only two examples. There selection wasn't that great either couldn't find half the stuff I was looking for and when I did find it it was way overpriced. Some of the dairy was twice the price of woodman's and some of it was more then cubs. Also the 400 part time employees they hired do not own any stock in the company and can't til there management. They have some good deals if you only buy there stuff that is on sale and clip there coupons (just like copps) I would rather go someone and save on all my groceries. Over all the store looked nice because It is new, but in the end I care about whats in my wallet money. read more

I love Hyvee. Why? I have allergies. Allergic to gluten (wheat, etc.) They list the ingredients of the items in the Deli - unlike other places. They have gluten-free pizza! And they have a fantastic health section wherein if you go on Thursdays, you can get 10% off. They have a huge selection of gluten-free food. Their employees are always extremely helpful. One fellow didn't even point, he accompanied me to the Aleve. When I'm choosing a gluten-free pizza, the bakers always come out and talk to me about how careful they are in making the pizza to avoid cross-contamination. Their prices are competitive. And they carry the Hyvee brand for many items which is cheaper and about the same quality as the name-brand, higher costing item. And last, but not least, the store is clean. Kudos to Hyvee. Love this store. Their Seafood & Meat counters are awesome. Produce dept. is good. Can find items such as FRESH Kale, not bagged, chopped. Even found Blood Oranges there once. Heirloom tomatoes. I absolutely love hyvee. Everything in the store is fresh and delicious! My biggest high-five hours to them for being the first to do grocery delivery in this area. When I was stuck in a wheelchair after surgery last year, and could not drive our go get food/groceries, hyvee delivered to me at NO CHARGE. I absolutely love this place. Hy-Vee was a clean well-sized grocery store with decent prices. It has all the basics and the sales turned out pretty good for us. It's unclear whether or not I got food poisoning from eating a couple of brats purchased from their store but even if I did, I guess I should be mad at their sausage supplier and not the store. I am a vegetarian they have a long list of foods and healthy frozen entrees, they have an array of juices and smoothies and they carry my favorite fig and walnut yogurt (its in that healthy section) .. and there is always wine on sale! read more

This a beautiful Hyvee. Just came in for food from the restaurant area. The pizza is amazing but the gyros are gross. Note to Hyvee: toast or grill the flat bread and add more meat. The cucumber sauce is way too tangy, too. read more

I love Hy-Vee!!!! --- those are some words i NEVER thought I'd say. My husband and i are TOTAL FOOD SNOBS. I'm the first to admit that. We've done too much research into what is in our food not to be, and my husband is a former chubby kid so we're just really picky. And Hy-vee has a little bit of everything for us. We only shop in the produce section and the Health food section. We can score all the organic produce we can eat, and stock our freezer and pantry here. They carry all our favorite brands. I HAVEN'T EVEN MENTIONED THE BULK BIN SECTION. as soon as i walk into the bulk bin section, i feel like I've stepped into heaven. I get an instant smile and feeling of calm and just walk around gazing and smiling like the wierdo I am. Heart bulk bins - organic coffee beans, organic dried beans & seeds & nuts, lots and lots of organics!!!!! Okkkkkkkk and the employees!!!!!!! OMG who put the opposite of piss in their cereal this morning, they are so nice!!!!!!! Cannot give 5 stars though, only because the prices are a little more than Woodman's, but I will continue coming here for most of my items since it's the closest to my house and I never have to wait in line (an employee has always whisked me away to another register to check me out any time I've stopped to wait in line) read more

Had ordered delivery from them and included in the notes about having coupons ($12.50) worth. That is what I was told to do by personnel at the store. Low and behold...no discount given ! And the driver was given the coupons ! So, no discount and no coupons to use again or elsewhere ! Total scam ! When I called and talked to the lady in charge, was told I could use one of the coupons later with another order. But the additional $2.50 coupon I never had the courtesy to receive back from them. Okay! Pricey! It's a costly store, so not for everyone. Product prices I can understand that based on quality the price may be higher. But even the canned/packed food is significantly costlier on regular price. Although sometimes they have very good discount (only on few items though), but then it would be out of stock if wait till weekend. Generally other stores would give another similar item for same price, but not hy-vee. Reason for below average rating is, parking lot hit and run - happened to me twice in a year. It weren't just door bumps or minor scratches, these were good palm size dents in my new car :(. The store/operation manager won't show security footage and not even confirm that they caught it on camera. These parking lot accidents make me feel very nervous while going there, pretty much avoid it now a days. read more

Wonderful experience! I was looking online for a grocery store and bakery who can assist in home delivery! There were quite a few in Madison, but most of them were charging exorbitant rates! Finally bumped into Hy-Vee while browsing! Admitting, initially was way too wary to place an order online! But I went ahead and ordered a birthday cake from them! Must say all the guests at the party loved the cake. It was super moist and tasted good! And yes, the customer service was really good! Though the cake was delivered a hour late, than requested!! This place offers home delivery......which for the disabled, of which I am one of, is a super great thing in the Madison area. The problem with this is, the prices are always different. Something that starts out at 1.99 one week is 3.99 a week later. You pay extra for a LARGE apple(softball size) and the ones they send arent as big as a tennis ball. I could hold 3 in the palm of my hand!!! Popsicles one week were 2.99.........a week later and ever since are now 4.99. WTF is up with that? Ive had one of their delivery guys enter my home and leave the groceries on the floor without EVER knocking or even letting me know he was here. He left them, went back to the store and called me to tell me he had stopped!!! He's lucky he didnt get shot(dramatic ...yeah I know) The produce was always good, fresh and yummy. Then out of the blue the tomatoes would be soft and wrinkly, the apples felt grungy, the lettuce was old and turning color. I filed a complaint and their answer was: "We'll try to train the staff better". OMG what kind of resolution is that. I constantly hear from people how high the prices are. They are...but as one of very few home delivery options in Madison, you dont have much choice. The sister store, Fresh Market Madison has even less choices and higher prices.
