I suppose I should reserve 5 stars for some epically-amazing, absolutely perfect experience, but I have to say: this was one of the best dining experiences I've had in a while. I was visiting Family in Buffalo, We decided to have a Cousin's night out and chose Hydraulic Hearth as the restaurant for the evening. I was skeptical because of the name, sounds super healthy. ha. It was amazing. One of my favorite restaurants in Buffalo now. I ordered a Margarita to drink (one of the best Marquita's I ever had; very flavorful). I had The pizza with Chicken and maple syrup on it but forgot the name. They had a gluten free crust. This pizza was amazing. the other pizza's we had (we had maybe 6 or 7 total). All looked Yummy. The Atmosphere was amazing! There were items ( Wine Flight holder and cutting Board was made by "The Foundry". Also, If you don't know what the Foundry is" Check it out! I finally got the chance to check out the hydraulic hearth after looking at it from the Food Truck Tuesday event for the last year. I loved this place it was a great time! First of all the venue itself is very cool, they have a big bar and lots of tables and I love the interior and its rustic factory sort of look. They also have their pizza oven on the restaurant floor with seating near it so you can watch workers making fresh pizzas! Onto the food, we stopped in for restaurant week and we got a cheese fondue board with veggies, bread, and apples along with their pepperoni pizza. Food was fantastic! The cheese was really good and the pizza was outstanding! I loved the spicy pepperoni flavor and sauce and that wood fired crust taste cannot be beat. Service was great and the bartender (we sat at the bar to eat) was friendly and attentive. Food came out lightning quick as well. Overall such a cool place, and definitely a good place to hang out for a drink anytime. From the furniture, to the locally sourced ingredients, to the free coffee after a meal, it's the little things that matter when a restaurant is trying to make a name for itself in a crowded market. And Buffalo has a saturated pizza market. Hydraulic Hearth immediately stood out from the crowd by offering Neapolitan pie. This is not a frat house pizza delivery place with half price Tuesday Specials. It's an elegant eatery, with a full bar, that serves authentic thin crust pizza. Prices and portions are reflective of the product. So, if you're looking for cheap and filling, Elmwood or Hertel is probably a better destination. The average pizza is $15. It will make one hungry person happy, and will be a nice split for two people who have salads and maybe an app. The wings - though not traditional spicy Buffalo style - are very good: rich, dark bourbon sauce. My favorite pizza is the sausage pomodoro and I'm also fond of the herb and cheese pizza when we use it for an appetizer for a larger party. There are always 9/10 to choose from, so meat eaters and vegetarians should be equally happy. The only pizza that doesn't measure up (on the menu Sept 2015) is the roasted chicken with (stewed?) tomatoes, cilantro cream sauce and shredded lettuce. Despite a near perfect crust, it was just weird. The combo did not work for me. The beer list is terrific- Bells Oberon on tap is great in the warmer months. And the specialty cocktail list is definitely worth exploring. Generally, I'm a martini drinker, but I'm slowly working my way down the cocktail list and I have not been disappointed. I've been going to HH about once a month since it opened last year and, as expected, the owners are adjusting the details to provide a consistently delicious experience. With the exception of our first visit, the service has always been very good - in fact, the last time we went, our server, Justina, really impressed us with her knowledge and patience. Earthy, minty, fruity, refreshing, inviting. THE PERFECT COCKTAIL. Made with absinthe, coconut, muddled mint and fresh orange. I could go on and on. But I almost forgot I ordered a pizza, that you probably want to hear about. Staggering over how great my cocktail was, it wasn't hard to figure out the pizza I wanted. Not to discredit the menu, they're doing some really things. But, I gravitated towards the asparagus pizza. Which while simple, sounded delicious. Roasted Asparagus, Farm egg, Fontina cheese. Simplistic. But paired beautifully. The lush in me was hoping for a touch of truffle oil, but it absolutely didn't need it. Crisp asparagus and the right amount of tangy, gooey, fontina. After a little buzz and a full tummy. Head out to the patio. During the summer they have live music, a second bar, plenty of out door seating and such a presence. I understand there being social distancing in the restaurants right now however it was off-putting that when we went in there was no one to greet us and let us know that we should go to the bar to order. Pizza tray holder was placed on the edge of the table and the last slice of pizza fell on the floor. Kind of a weird design and sad that we lost a slice. The pizza was nice, chicken was a bit dry on our buffalo chicken pizza lacking in buffalo sauce, I wished there was more blue cheese. The margarita pizza was good but the basil shouldn't be cooked. Crust was the best part of both pizza!!! We also got the steak sub My criticisms on that are please add more cheese whiz, toast the bun, and season the steak better. The decor of this place is spot on for my taste! I've never had the chance to make it to the larkin square square area, and this place is right in the heart! The pizzas run about $16. It is a little steep. But the richness of everything was SUPERB. I got the pulled rib pizza. It was a little spicy for my taste. It's on a super thin crust that they make in a brick oven pizza that you can see in the seating area. I like the vibes. It's an open restaurant. They have the best outdoor area. Came here for dinner last night. It was one of the best dining experiences I've had in a while. The host/manager was so friendly and welcoming when we first arrived. Service was great! The place has a really cool vibe between the brick walls, wood floors, and Edison bulbs. As for the food and drinks, I got the buffalo south side cocktail which was absolutely delicious and was garnished with hops which I thought was really cute. For dinner we ordered the farm salad which was a good size and super fresh. We also got two pizzas, the fried chicken and mushroom. I have to say I was slightly apprehensive about trying Hydraulic Hearth after reading so many mixed reviews here. Last night we ventured in for dinner around 8:30 and we had a fantastic experience! We thankfully made reservations on Open Table so avoided having to wait for a table. The drink menu had a nice mixture of draft beer, cocktails, wine and a few special boilermakers. I went with Community Beer Works Seasonal Affective Stout, which paired nicely with the various pizzas we ordered. There were 8 of us, so we ordered 4 pizzas for everyone to share...and not one of them was overly charred as some of the other reviews mention. Our favorites were the pulled pork and the butternut squash pizzas...both had a lot of flavor and were really different from anything we've had at the other local wood fire pizza places. Yes it's a bit loud, but most of these little places seem to be nowadays, especially when you're converting an older space. I really want to like this place and give it more stars. I've been a few times. Usually just for drinks after or before a Larkin Square event in the summer. Last night, there was a group of 12 of us. Pros: The waitress handled the large group like a pro, got all of our orders right, and did separate checks. The seasonal cocktail I had, can't remember the name but it had gin and sage, was delicious. A bit sweet for a second, so I only had one. Atmosphere- Beautiful building. In the summer, the outside is one of the best hangout patios in Buffalo. Cons: I can't get past the overpriced food that's not very good. $10 for 6 wings? I don't think I've ever paid that, and it doesn't indicate it's only 6. The blue cheese dressing seemed homemade but was super salty. I wasn't a fan of the sauce on the wings either. Pizza- I had their pizza once before at a group gathering. I didn't like it. Tried it again yesterday as that's about the extent of the menu. It wasn't very good, a mix between tasteless and burnt. Drinks- inconsistent. I've had great drinks and some that aren't so good. Depends on the bartender I guess. Overall, a good place to come for a drink or beer and hangout, especially in nice weather. When entering this place it feels trendy and light. We were greeted by a sign that says seat yourself and take a menu. I sat close to the ovens so I could watch the pizzas being cooked. After a minute a younger guy came over and said "when your ready to order drinks and food just go up to the bar" I waited for my friends and noticed the huge amount of crafted beers they had available. The menu was not huge but had a good amount of choices. When going to the bar to order it was a little akward because you don't really know where to go. Finally I navigated to the correct spot and ordered an arugula salad, four cheese pizza, chicken sandwiches and bourbon chicken wings. We noticed after a half hour or so that no one was getting food at all. I politely asked the waiter if it was "possible to get our salad" he nodded and few minutes later brought us a great arugula salad with fresh shaved parmigiana cheese on it with a fresh lemon dressing. It was not long after we noticed napkins and plates along with water are located on a table along with plastic silverware wrapped in plastic. We grabbed what we needed and decided to order some of the specialty drinks including Mia Thai, Moscow mule and a really good bourbon drink. Our food came out hot and the pizza was cooked perfectly along with the chicken sandwich. Unfortunately our chicken wings were served not fully cooked. I tried several times to wave down the waiter but it was clear this was a help yourself kinda place with little to no service. I walked up to where he was standing and asked him if we could get wings cooked fully. The waiter said nothing but "ya" and then took our salty oddly flavored undercooked wings from the table. About ten minutes later brought us new wings cooked this time but too salty to eat not to mention them having a weird smell to them our entire table noticed. These wings went on touched and not doggie bagged.We were never checked on once to even advise the waiter until he quickly put our check on the table while walking by. While I do enjoy Hydraulic, it's out of the way, overpriced and overrated. The limited menu and cocktail lists are far too expensive for my taste, and the location has never been "right there" for any after work event or evening out. The food and drinks are decent, but there are much better (and more affordable) options almost anywhere else in the downtown area. There is limited bar space and even more limited seating for those looking to relax after work. There is a small seating area with a couch but I've never had the chance to enjoy it - always occupied. There seems to be a ton of outdoor space, I'll have to come back and try when the weather is nicer. As far as a happy hour spot, there are much better alternatives. read more

I recently moved to the Buffalo area, and intend to visit all the restaurants/breweries in the area. I have already come back to this place twice because that's how good it is! The pizza crust is cooked perfectly, and they have styles for everyone- including vegan. The sausage pomodoro one is my favorite. They brew their own beer and it's fantastic. Went on a Saturday night around 6pm with a group of 5 and no reservation. There was an hour wait to sit inside, but they offer self-seating outside in their spacious beer garden. The outside bar offers beeeer and wine with liquor only available at the bar inside. So two of us ordered food, two got the cocktails, and one held the table. By the time the delicious craft cocktails ($10) were ready and we all sat down the pizzas arrived in very little time. We ordered three pizzas : pepperoni, cheeseburger, and margherita. All were hot, crispy and delicious. However, everyone agreed the the cheeseburger stole the show. Highly recommended. I would caution that these pizzas are very light and not very filling. Three pizzas for 5 smaller individuals was enough, but some of us could have eaten more. The beer garden was very cool. They offer shuffleboard, corn hole (bag toss) and some other games I think. We didn't play, but it's a nice option. Beer selection was good with many locally produced options. The cocktails were well done, and they currently offer three homemade shandy beers (lemon, lime, and grapefruit). Again, all were delicious. My boyfriend and I went there late on a Monday night and we were one of the only people there so we sat at the bar, my boyfriend is a bit chatty and tried to make small talk with the bartender as she was serving us and she wasn't having it, she would roll her eyes and just walk away mid conversation. She did mention her parents owned a bakery that I really liked that had closed recently. I said I was so sad they closed because I loved their stuff and she got so offended and snippy with me, because "her parents were tired and deserved a break, you know!" I come to the Hearth once and a while for an after work drink with my co-workers. I wouldn't say that I'm a regular, but I've been here enough times to have a pretty good lay of the land. The bar is pretty good sized and runs almost the length of the building, with a number of tables and chairs filling in the rest of the place. They have a wood fired stove in the back that they use to make their specialty pizzas. They have a great outdoor space with ample seating and shuffleboard. The bathrooms have always been very clean when I used them, so no complaint there. I'm usually more of a beer guy but the selection here is very limited, although the choices are pretty good. This is one of the few places I will typically get a cocktail. The reason for this is that the bartenders are super knowledgeable and skilled in their craft. The sheer amount of drinks they can offer you will likely make your head spin. More than once in the past I haven't known what to get and they ask me to describe flavors and things I like and they then just whip something up on the spot that I've never heard of before. A friend and I came by for the Alpaca night they had tonight. I got the Pumking beer and she ordered a daiquiri which ended up being a seasonal drink, it had cinnamon and maple notes which were delicious. Their patio is gigantic and features an outside bar, booths and tables, and what looks a giant shuffleboard court. They offer table service outside as well. The decor is very unique, mismatched seats and chairs and all types of furniture. The cocktails are a little pricey for me at $10 but the beers all seemed to be around $6 which is fairly normal. We did not eat but I need to say the pizza looked truly delicious. I will definitely be coming back to try a pizza. Probably the best artisan pizza I've ever had in my entire life. The pomodoro pizza is absolutely amazing. Insanely delicious. Pizzas are a bit on the pricier side (~$15 ea, if you're having dinner will want one per person as their not huge) but they're great quality. Interesting combinations and ingredients, good for meat eaters, vegetarians, and even gluten free crowd alike. Bourbon BBQ wings were pretty good, however they mentioned "grilled" on the menu and I was disappointed when they arrived fried and "finished on the grill". Blue cheese tasted housemade. Bomb. Cocktails are also excellent, kind of place with "mixologists" or whatever they call themselves these days. Fancy bartenders who can make top notch cocktails. Draught list is typically pretty good but I've noticed it tends towards the lower ABV offerings (few boomstick IPA's, DIPA's, etc...) Lots of room both inside and out. Great outdoor area with tons of seating. Separate bar outside usually staffed in the warmer months only where you can also order food (but you have to run it yourself). Parking can be sort of an issue, but rarely more than a 1 block walk, and it's free. Pretty good music selection over the house speakers inside to boot. Typically notice some Jerry Garcia, Dead, or miscellaneous funk goin on. Awesome place if youre in the mood for some heady pizza and a fine adult beverage, hanging out with a group, or just looking for a place to be outside and enjoy some sun while getting your buzz on. read more

This looked like a treandy place to grab some cocktails. This was not my normal place, but i wanted to give it a try. The bartenders were not friendly and their drink menu was way too fancy. The bartender was not patient so I had to select fast so I got the sangria. It was decent, but nothing special. For what I got it was overpriced. The patio hosts great live music in the summer and has a bunch of games to play with friends, if you have any. Sticking to true compliment sandwich form, I will now talk about the food and the menu. The pizzas aren't great, maybe a 3/5. I've been several times and the pizza is very inconsistent, some days undercooked and on others it's burnt to a crisp. Menu is very limited and the meat and cheese platter seems as if it was arranged on accident. To be honest I wasn't blown away by Hydraulic Hearth. The pizza was not the greatest quality or quantity for the price. I just thought it was a very average experience. I ordered the burrata pizza expecting it to be loaded with burrata but what I got really reminded me more of a caprese style pizza. One of my favorite weekend spots. The highlight of a Hydraulic Hearth visit is definitely the service and atmosphere. The patio is a must visit in the summer as well. By all fairness this places deserves a zero! I have never encountered such disgustingly rude service in my life. Walked in to our first experience at a very busy bar for a pre dinner drink, tried to get a bartenders attention or 5 minutes (they were not serving but putting glasses away) but due to the density of folks, were unsuccessful. We the moved to the end of the bar where there was room to order a drink before we were purposefully elbowed and scolded by some employee that we were in the bars service area. Luckily I can read but alas there was no sign that I missed that should have prompted such a dickish response. Nonetheless, we won't be back and Wont be sending anyone this way.
