Hubs ordered a salad with tuna, fresh capers and olives. I was so happy with the pate appetizer and their house liter of local red wine. I didn't know about this place until a local bar wrote me a literal treasure map to find it. "A right though the arch, past the Lions fountain, snake the square till the X." But.. you know.. with pictures. I didn't realize until after I tasted thier pizza that I was in a Disney movie that was trying to teach me that gold could be a metaphor. That the treasure was what the chef was serving all along. I have eaten what I thought was the best pizza in Washington D.C. maybe near once a week, as a tradition. I didn't know. How could I know what I was missing? It's like an artist only getting to play with basic colors all their life, only to find out that neon shades exist. What I thought was the best was only good because I didn't know better. Now I know. And I might never really enjoy an American pizza again. I can't describe why it's so good. It's not the ratio of sauce to cheese, or the fluff of the crust versus the crunch. It's more like eating twinkies all your life, and calling them croissants cuz that's all you know. Then finally having a real croissant. It's like having something finally live up to your expectation for once in your entire life, and being furious that you've lived an entire life of substandard lies. I am usually the kind of person who only leaves a review to nuke a place from orbit because I feel like the have failed not o ly me, but themselves. As I wandered through the streets of Florence starving, I was happy to come across I Ghibellini. We opted for a spot on the patio as it was a nice day. The house white wine and prosecco were very well priced and we were happy to enjoy some of it. The place was very conveniently located to our Airbnb and their outdoor seating was very welcoming with the misters during a heat wave. Wait staff was very attentive and nice. We had the Italian sausage and pepperoni pizza, Greek salad and pasta and the food overall was good. It was tasty and fresh. Everything came out hot, except the salad of course. The pizza was so large we had to take 1/2 of it home. The pasta was yummy and I finished it all, which meant I had no room for dessert. A table next to us though had an amazing lemon sorbet that was their dessert and it looked amazing since they hollowed an actual lemon to fill it with the sorbet and then froze it to serve whole as a dessert. I definitely want to try that next time. Their cafe next door supplies the coffee they serve and it was yummy both after meals as well as in the mornings as we walked by daily before our tours and activities. Overall, the place was ok on food but a little pricey for the quality. It was good for a meal but I wouldn't make an effort to go back if I didn't have to when there's so much good food around Florence to try. read more

When I lived in Florence, I Ghibellini was my favorite place for pizza. The key here for real Italian pizza is the toppings. You need to have great vegetables that are as fresh as possible. The meats (especially my personal favorite, the salsiccia) have to be well cured and slightly raw to evoke their true flavor, the sauce has to be freshly made with tomato and herb, and the crust has to be flaky and firm. If that's that kind of pizza you're seeking to try while in Florence, then this is your restaurant. Good for small groups on the patio, but if you have a large group, don't be discouraged. They have a huge basement seating area perfect for groups of eight or more. Drink list is substantial and if pizza isn't your thing, they also excel at a wide variety of primi and secondi options as well. This is definitely one of those quintessential Florentine spots you need to try... read more

God no...the food was decidedly boring...they debunked the myth that "you can't have a bad meal in Italy". ..YES YOU CAN! The staff was friendly enough and even brought out a complimentary flatbread to make up for a small delay in our service. The house wine and flatbread were pretty tasty so we kept our hopes up...but the food was a waste of our first calories in Firenze. We'd never met pappardelle we didn't like back in the U.S., but this store bought pappardelle was thick, overcooked and lifeless. The spaghetti al nero di seppia was equally boring and I've made better at home. We asked ourselves if we're being too harsh because we're in the food industry and have higher standards...we concluded that while this may be partly true, when we compare to meals back in the u.s., we've had way way way better "Italian" food at Bucca di beppo, for example....smh. I normally clear everything on my plate if reasonably tasty, but there was no hope here...both our plates were left quite full. So the lesson, boys and girls, is caveat emptor...buyer beware...you CAN have a bad meal in italy, it's true. Do your homework, and shop around so you can have awesome meals like we had an hour later at la giostra 2 stars because of good service 1 star because there's no way a 2 star review will ever bring this place down to a realistic 2 star rating...just doing my part. read more

It wasn't on the menu it they made it especially for him. The pizza was fantastic which was prosciutto, spicy sausage, and mushrooms. However I found the pasta a bit lacking in flavor. Worst meal I had in Italy. One of the items I ordered was the porcini mushroom pizza, and it was the worst pizza I had in my life. The pizza was soggy and the mushroom was not fresh, it was canned. Many reviews you will read about Florence will talk about the shoddy service in many restaurants. SO TRUE, please add this place to your MUST AVOID, DO NOT ENTER, WALK ON BY list. The menu is basic and dull. The drink options are limited to wine and 2 beers, that's it. But the service, which is usually the "make or break" to your nite, was profoundly horrific. If you are not Italian or Spanish, then forget about any sort of attention. Our order for 4 was turned into an order for 2, then 1, and one fully forgotten. Several requests for water were ignored, yet new tables, with non Americans, were given bread and water immediately. My Mother In Law used to eat at I Ghibellini when she lived in Florence .. she steered us well the entire trip and they sent us a lovely glass of prosecco to celebrate her return for lunch. This is our favorite restaurant in Florence and we've been coming here for years. Each time we stop here at least once. We like it all. The house wine, the pizzas and atmosphere are our favorites. Most recently, we arrived early before the rest of our party and just asked for a table to start with our drinks. They brought us free munchies and pizza bread while we waited. Our server Christina was the most friendly waitress I've had anywhere. She joked with us about our terrible pronunciation and helped us with some tricks to better pronounce Italian words. At the end of our meals, she gave us a complimentary dessert drink. It wasn't to my liking, but that's a preference thing. The gesture was very kind and for that we are grateful. My family had a nice casual lunch here after museum-hopping in the morning. The service was friendly and we liked the stories in the menu about cooking with Grandma on Sundays. Genuine? Maybe not, but it's nice not to take everything too seriously when you're traveling. I also loved this amazing bad painting they had near where we sat, of a gigantic woman lounging across an entire landscape. Nothing to do with the food, I digress... I had the riboletto, which I look forward to eating every single day for the rest of my life. If soup made with leftover soup and leftover bread (traditionally) isn't your thing, the pizza looked decent as did the pasta. They also brought out some warm bread from the pizza oven before our meal which was better than standard. Was the food *amazing*? A bit touristy. Things happen, I get hangry, I go to the first place I see. Although, I don't think we should always write the touristy restaurants off. I think it is very easy for us to snub restaurants and not give them a fair chance. I'm guilty of this, searching for authentic cuisine, searching for the places that have no tourists... I guess after having a couple of mediocre meals at places locals said were authentic and the best, I'm starting to manage my expectations a bit more. Anyway, this isn't far from my apartment and I walked through this street today realizing that I always bypass this area, but there are restaurants, cafes, sandwich shops, a "pub", and lots of nice stores... Can't believe I missed this. I ended up here and I have to say the square is fairly quiet compared to all the other squares out there. It is lovely, so I sat outside to enjoy the sun, the scenery, and the relative peacefulness. To the restaurant's credit, the service was excellent... both my service and the service that I saw other people receiving. The staff were attentive, but also very friendly. There was one lady picking something off of her salad, a waiter went over and asked her if something was wrong, if he could get her something else. Another waiter, every time someone's napkin fell or blew away, he was right there with a new one. A group of 14 German students came in and the whole staff put together a couple of tables, got them seated, and quickly started taking drink orders. Probably some of the best service I have received here in Italy. The menu is like a chapter book, but don't worry, it is because there are a few different languages contained within... I think right after the English menu, there was a French menu. I figured that I probably shouldn't go with anything to "fancy" although the little anecdotes under some of the menu items... were interesting. It was hard to take them seriously, but at the same time, I don't know other places that go to those lengths. And then I saw it: the Machiavelli Pizza. Yes, they have a pizza named after Machiavelli and it looked delicious! It is pork sausage, spinach, and Pecorino cheese. I was going to order a started of Panzanella, but figured bread and pizza would be just too much. They brought out the basked of bread and I am going to say that everyone else's bread looked really good, mine looked like the leftovers that got a bit burnt. They must have known that I typically don't eat the basket bread anymore. Although, unlike other places where if you don't eat it, they won't charge you coperto, they still charged me for it. Anyway, as my order went in, I saw a calzone come out... it looked like a volcano! It was huge! They sat it down in front of a guy and instantly, he poked a hole with his knife and it began to deflate. He also only ate the inside and none of the crust. There was another pizza that came out and it looked like it had roasted potatoes on it. I won't lie to you, at one of my favourite pizzerias from college, one of my favourite slices was called the Mr. Potato Head. However, I was looking forward to my pizza. It came out just as a French couple sat down next to me. They were eyeing my pizza and ended up ordering it. It was pretty darn good. The sausage (ground pork) was a bit on the salty side, but was still good. And the combination of spinach and Pecorino cheese was just what I was wanting. I couldn't finish all of it, but I really tried. Being so full, I had an espresso, but no dolce... probably would have burst at the seams. My waitress was really lovely, even when she got very busy waiting on the group of German students, she was still very attentive to the rest of us. I would give the food about a 3.5, but would give the service a solid five... hence the four stars. If you're on a budget and not super fussed about touristy places to eat, have the pizza and save some money! read more

Stumbled upon this restaurant walking to the duomo. Had a great crowd on the patio so we decided to grab a table. Had two spritz's and then a lovely bottle of their house read. We started with their chicken liver on toast which doesn't look appetizing, but it's full of flavor. I tried the carbonara pasta which most people would find too rich, but it was right up my alley. This was my fathers favorite place to eat in Europe. It's not super fancy, it's the equivalent of a good local spot in America, but if you are traveling and want some great pasta or REAL pizza, it's the place to be. The five stars are because you sometimes want a place that will deliver you great food without making you worry about which fork you use. And, when you can't decide which pasta to get, they can help you or just make a little of all three for you! We stumbled upon this place while walking from the Duomo to the museum of the Opera(?) The pizza was delicious, not what we are used to from NYC with the hard crust. You can't eat by hand. I also tried the Firenze specialty, 'the stomach' which was alright, not meant for all. But we were both happy with the pizza and the service. Pound for pound, this is my favorite restaurant in Italy, let alone Florence. I have been here several times over the course of several years, and it is always outstanding. I crave this place, and I never crave any Italian restaurants in my hometown of LA. I don't know how you screw up pizza, but they did. Even after we sent it back because it wasn't done, it still came out half- cooked with a soggy soggy crust. By the time we ate our pizza the second time around, our boys' hamburgers still weren't out. I've never wasted so much time or money.
