    TEMPORARILY CLOSED AGAIN
    Emily A.

Showed up to have dinner here Thursday night only to find it's temporarily closed AGAIN! Very disappointing. Hope it doesn't stay closed too long!

These 小笼包 are actually very good! The dumpling skin is so so thin

Be warned, this restaurant closes at 8.30pm on a Saturday. We got there at 7.45pm and already most of the items were sold out. We ordered the 马兰头, the last time I had this dish was over 10 years ago in Shanghai when we lived there. This is was surprising close enough to the ones in 鼎泰丰, that means it's good. 马兰头 is a tofu, wild herb dish. If you like a light, veggie-filled, protein rich appetiser, try this. The flavor is mild. We also ordered the 小笼包. The skin was thin, the soup inside was delicious and a lot. The ground pork was tender. What I wanted more was the vinegar and ginger. It wasn't enough. 生煎包 was sold out, wish they had cos i would really loved to try that. Instead we ordered the 锅贴, it was good too. The skin on this is supposed to be thicker than the 小笼包 and the pork inside was tasty too. Not a real disappointment but there's room for improvement.. only because the other 2 were superb. We will be back....

Came here on a Saturday after I got done with the cruise. It was past 2pm and they were almost closing. The shrimp and pork dim sum and the fried rice were good. No issue with service. Ambiance - spacious and well lit. It was not dirty. It was not crowded as they were about to close so I was able to enjoy a quiet meal. I thought the price was reasonable for the portions. Have to go down steps/stairs as the restaurant is located below ground level. I would give this restaurant 3.5 stars, but since this is not possible, I am rounding up to 4 stars as I did not experience any issue.

Great Shanghainese food in Old Sac. I've been here multiple times, and every time have really enjoyed the pan fried pork Xiao long baos. This folks, is where it's at! The XLBs have a nice crispy bottom and really tasty soup and ground pork on the inside. The sauce saturates the inside of the bao. It is so delicious! The noodles taste freshly made and the soup it comes with is light. I enjoyed the noodles and broth, but would probably try a different protein next time. The tofu was on a bit of the sweet side. The pork was crispy but on the chewy side. Overall, the Pan friend XLBs are excellent. While this visit had some other dishes that didn't hit as well, I've certainly enjoyed many dishes here over time. Park in the Front St parking structure if you want parking validated. Other parking structures can't be validated.

I wanted to enjoy this place so badly - they have AMAZING food options including a traditional beef noodle soup, dumplings -- it's fully authentic and delicious! However, the service was also authentically hole in the wall in that the waiter was unhelpful and cold. Highly recommend this meal as takeout.

I love the XLB from this establishment. It is freshly made after ordering so there is a bit of a wait. The soup is really flavorful and the meat is tender and perfectly seasoned. This is definitely one of the best XLBs in the Sacramento area. Another must order item is the sweet osmanthu scented glutinous rice cakes. The combination of the mildly sweet, soft, and chewy textures completely satisfies my tastebuds. This is also freshly prepared. The sliced bean curd was just okay. It lacked flavor. I will not order this in the future.

This place has become one of our dinner spots for Tahoe ski trips. This restaurant is located in the old town and there is some street parking nearby. I visited this place twice - once before and once after a Tahoe ski trip since it is on the way to/from SF. It was quite busy on weekends and we waited for almost an hour on a Sunday evening so I would recommend calling ahead to leave your name if possible. Their pan fried pork dumplings is definitely the must-have on the menu. They were super juicy and delicious with a good amount of browning and crunch on the bottom. Their XLB pork dumplings and plain boiled chicken were pretty authentic as well. We wanted to like the beef noodle soup but it was just average. Overall, I would recommend their dim sum dishes over the rice/noodles and it's best to do family style so you can get to try different things.

WHY WE WENT HERE: - dinner THE LOOK (FROM THE OUTSIDE): - located in Old Sacramento (be prepared to pay for the limited street parking or for parking in the nearby parking garage within walking distance) - located off of Front St (closest to L St cross street) next door to Old Sacramento Trading Post THE LOOK (FROM THE INSIDE): - you enter to go downstairs; restaurant is located in a basement (renovated and bright) THE MENU: - appetizers - soup - noodle with toppings - dim sum - hot dish - fried rice & noodles - side order - drinks - NOTE: if you order in person for dine-in and/or take-out, just know that the menu may be difficult to navigate correctly when indicating your check boxes for the items you want to order (Chinese name of dish is on the first line, then the English name of the dish is on the second line - we messed up our order 2x; we wanted the braised beef noodle soup but accidentally checked off the yellow croacker with preserved vegetable noodle soup option (this was caught and corrected by us); we wanted the deep fried rice cake Shanghai Style but accidentally checked off the sweet osmanthu scented glutinous rice cake (this we didn't catch and correct) WHAT WE ORDERED: - braised duck in brown sauce Shanghai style - braised beef noodle soup - pork dumplings - pan fried pork bun - fried scallion pancake - we MEANT to get the deep fried rice cake Shanghai Style but we ACCIDENTALLY checked off the sweet osmanthu scented glutinous rice cake) THE TASTE: - braised duck in brown sauce Shanghai style was tender and good; don't leave it in the sauce too long or it'll get overly salty - braised beef noodle soup was satisfying and heartwarming - pork dumplings were soupy and well-seasoned - pan fried pork bun had a GREAT crunch to the bottom and wasn't too thick with the bun to filling ration - fried scallion pancake was fried to perfection and tasted good - the osmanthy scented glutinous rice cake is reminiscent of the Filipino glutinous rice cake dessert known as sapin sapin; slightly sweet and super soft/gelatinous CUSTOMER SERVICE: - we ordered take-out, but our customer service interactions were nice and welcoming

I was heartbroken when The Cellar closed at this location and it took me a few years to come check out its replacement. Shanghai Dumplings didn't change any of the decor and I was hoping some of the Cellar's menu had survived but it was not to be. My fellow elite Racheal G ordered most of the food including: deep fried shrimp balls, pan fried dumplings, shrimp n pork xlb, pork xlb, duck, seafood fried rice and pork chop noodle soup. The best items were the shrimp balls and fried rice. The worst item was the lukewarm pork chop noodle soup. The XLB stuffing tasted like pork sausage which did not appeal to me. Tasty Dumplings uses the same filling so I am wondering if this is a Taiwanese recipe? Overall SD was acceptable and popular from all the people trying to get a table. Reservations are recommended. If your in Old Sacramento and want some dumplings come check em out.

I didn't know this restaurant existed until recently. It can easily be missed when walking through Old Sac. After having a taste of a few of their dim sum items via take out, I wanted to check I Shanghai out. A note on the layout: I wanted to point out that there are a couple flights of stairs you'll need to walk down from the street to get to the seating area of the restaurant. Of the four items ordered, two were delicious, two I could've gone without. Listed in the order of my favorite to least favorite, I tried the Pan Fried Pork Bun, Pork Dumplings, Steamed Dumplings with Pork and Glutenous Rice, and Fried Noodles Shanghai Style. The Pan Fried Pork Bun was different than any dim sum item I'd ever had before. The outside texture was crispy, yet somehow still chewy. So good! This item and the Pork Dumplings would be what I'd order again. The Pork Dumplings do have the soup inside (so eat it with a spoon). The Steamed Dumplings with Pork and Glutenous Rice was interesting and flavorful in the middle, but personally just wasn't something I liked. The Fried Noodles Shanghai Style didn't taste like anything special nor was it a taste I particularly enjoyed. I am looking forward to trying out more dim sum items in the future. Definitely give this place a try during your next trip to Old Sac.

Located in OLD Town Sac is this authentic Shanghai style spot. Plenty metered street parking and nearby parking garage but you will have to descend stairs to get to the restaurant. Order directly via the printed menus (plenty of pix) or using the qr code menu. Pending time you go, you may get to watch the dumplings being made! We ordered a variety of items to try-Shao Luong Baos, pan fried buns, beef noodle soup, fried scallion pancakes to name a few. Our fav was the beef noodle soup-beef was tender and very tasty. Efficient service. Still more items to try so another visit is definitely needed.

We went here last week and loved it. We made a reservation. They are only seating with reservations. If you get lucky you can walk in and if the stars align you can get a seat. I was a bit annoyed with this, but after having dinner I love it. They really spread everyone out. It made me feel so comfortable. We have really worked on social distancing and I felt so safe eating here and look forward to returning. We used to go monthly, but due to Covid this is our first time returning. The food is still delicious. I ordered my favorite. The Shrimp balls. It's balls like meatballs covered with like croutons, soft and baked or fried. They are amazing. The flavor wants you to come back for more. The Shanghai noodles can be explained like chowmein, but so much more flavorful. To me it's like chowmein, but worth ordering it for the flavor. You must go and give it a try. If you love dumplings you will love their soup dumplings.

Shanghai Noodles~ These noodles were amazing, salty and savory just how they should be!

I scratched my head thinking, OK I GUESS THEY WERENT KIDDING about ordering through their QR CODE. I had to turn off my WIFI on my phone because XFINITY WAS interfering with my browser access. I'm stepped outside in front of their restaurant and ordered. I ordered their bento with a garlic sausage and a beef soup. What's bad is by waiting in their showroom dining area, I was never given a receipt to confirm if I put in my order. I'm not even sure if it went through. My card confirmed they took my money. So I guess it went through. Their QR code app doesn't even have a way to tell me if I made the order or not. Checked my email and still no receipt. My food was ready in 5 mins. On my way out as the young man handed me my package, I asked him "is this how people normally pay by QR CODE?" He answered with a hesitant tone, "Yes " I replied, "ok just checking." The Garlic Sausage reminded me of the Filipino Garlic longaniza. Slightly different. Maybe it's lighter but it tasted good. There was steamed cabbage and garlic seaweed. Pretty good. I think the food reminds me of home style cooking.

We have tried to dine here a few times last year but had to leave. Why? there was always a moderate smell of propane gas that permeated the dining area...so we opted to leave each time. But today, there was not a propane odor so we decided to dine in and try a few dishes again. So what did we order: 1) Salted fish and chicken fried rice: this dish was very good. flavors of dried salted fish was evident throughout each bite. you could even see the tiny pieces of salted dried fish. nice. chicken was tender. rice kernels did not stick or clump together like some places. And there were pieces of fresh ginger. This dish was very enjoyable. would order this dish again without hesitation. 2) bitter melon and beef in black bean sauce. Another nice flavorful dish. My only suggestion was just a little too sweet for me. I understand the goal is to balance out the bitter by adding sugar but I actually like the bitter flavor and will ask them to eliminate adding sugar to this dish in the future. But if you like this dish with a bitter and more sweet taste, this is your dish. 3) combo plate: chow mein and chicken with broccoli in garlic sauce. Just a basic american style combination dish. Personally, not my type of dish, but my dining companion enjoys these type of dishes. She said the chicken was tender and there was planet of chicken in this entree. But she never received her egg roll.
