I really love the feel of coziness at this place! It is an ideal lunch spot for 1, 2, or small groups. I went in for lunch and wanted to try the tonkatsu bento lunch box. But because I wanted it with tempura, it had to be the dinner box. The portion was very generous. I even had to take some to-go. I would have like it more if the egg rolls were replaced with some sushi rolls. Nothing wrong with the egg rolls, it was just too many fried items for me. The shrimp tempura were the absolute BEST! I would order it again and again! The salad dressing was also delicious. The tonkatsu was unfortunately a bit overcooked for me. Next time, I will try the sushi! read more

Love this place. My boyfriend took me here for hibachi n and it was great. The only downfall was it. It was extremely hot I feel like the air conditioner was not on it all because I was sweating but then again, they have the fire right there. This is a small family run restaurant, very authentic, excellent food and quick service. All of the sushi was delicious - salmon and avocado, snow crab, and spicy yellowtail. We saw someone else order the Dynamite Roll, and went ahead to order it too - it was just perfect. Just one of our rolls was a little less presentable than the others, but taste was still fantastic, so I loved everything here, and we'll definitely visit there again in the future. We also ordered a Bento Box Pork Tonkatsu and a Chicken Tontaksu plate. *Covid review* We were looking for a sushi restaurant that is open for dine in as many are currently doing carry-out or delivery only. After sticking to the normal/more popular spots (Japaneiros, Keepers, Azuma), I am so glad we came across this spot. For apps we had spicy edamame (I'm a big fan of spicy and can handle heat but these were pretty hot), gyoza and fried jalapeño. All were great and good portions - plenty to split between 3 people. They also came out quick. For rolls we had the Magic Roll, Chef Signature Roll and the Spider Roll. All of them them were very good and fresh and the presentations were great. Our server Kayla was so sweet and did a great job. She recommended the banana tempura for dessert and she was right - it's delicious and another generous portion. They could do something with the ambiance (maybe rearrange tables or brighten up the place) and they should definitely have some music on - it's kind of awkwardly quiet when everyone is silently eating! Additionally, they do not serve alcohol so maybe they'll allow BYOB? Def worth asking.. sushi and wine/sake just go together! I was in a mood for sushi after talking with a friend. I didn't have a place in mind but I decided to visit Ichiban Sushi & Tapioca. I've been to the restaurant before but this was a very long time ago almost 10 years. From my memory to present, ownership has changed since then and the restaurant set up now is a bit more spacious. My visit to the restaurant was around lunch but due to the COVID situation, there were safety precautions taken. The sushi bar was blocked off and the staff were wearing masks and gloves. I was the only sole diner while others came in for pick up orders. I decided to go with the 8 piece sushi that comes with the Sakura roll and additionally ordered the fresh water eel, smoked salmon, and red clam. I did want to try the albacore but they were out. I did appreciate the presentation for the sushi to be more simplistic when it comes to ordering nigiri as opposed to special sushi rolls. I was pleased about the choices especially the favorite 3: tuna, salmon, and shrimp. I gravitate toward that minimalistic approach of sushi rice and a nice cut of fish. Overall I did enjoy my visit to the restaurant but I did have a tiny issue. As much of a fan I am of the "Big 3" (Tuna, Salmon, Shrimp), I was looking more of a variety of an 8 nigiri selection. I did receive two of each tuna and salmon but I would have liked if there was tamago (egg) and another choice. For me, whenever I order an 8 piece sushi at a restaurant, I see it as a variety to showcase good solid picks to represent the restaurant. I am aware it is chef's choice but an assortment will let me know as a guest, "Whatever is picked as 8 pieces of sushi, individually they hold their own weight and a good representation of the restaurant. I always have this thought when I visit sushi restaurants: "If you want know how good the sushi is, order the tamago and that will let you know" Unfortunately I didn't see that for my visit as one of the 8 sushi choices. But I will comeback to try again another time. read more

In my opinion, a beautiful hidden gem here in Sugar Land in terms of sushi. I have been coming to Ichiban for the last 5-6 years (if not longer) and I am not sure why I haven't reviewed this place. Tucked away in a shopping complex, it is not hard to fine but not always visible to the eye. They have recently expanded their menu and added an AMAZING appetizer which is kale tempura. Now, i know a lot of placed do kale tempura but this is one of the only places I can think of that have nailed the art of it. The kale is flash fried with the right proportion of tempura so that when you bite into it, it isn't all tempura or all kale. Drizzled with mayo and eel sauce, it adds just a tinge of sweetness that is perfect. You can get the eel sauce on the side and it is just as good. Prior to the kale tempura, my go to appetizer was their stuffed jalepenos. Each other comes with 4 jalepenos and they are pretty filling. Their sushi list is amazing. They have traditional, non-traditional rolls, sashimi and hand rolls. My go to is usually the shaggy dog (my favorite if you love shrimp tempura and just tempura in general), pink dragon (salmon based) and their vegetable tempura hand rolls. The chef is super good at also making things vegetarian if that is an option and he will always go out of his way for my husband to do that. From their other hot items, their Chicken Yakisoba noodles is my favorite. This used to be my comfort food after long residency hours and the quality and taste has not been changed or compromised this many years later. Their lunch bento boxes are also a great way to taste a little bit of everything. The Chef also has started bottling his own chili sauce which is a must. It is a beautiful blend of spices that is a bit spicy for me but a true love among spicy eaters. The restaurant is always moderately busy but it is never hard to find a table. Sitting by the kitchen is always fun because you get to see the Chef's skill at making sushi. They are very accommodating to large parties and have great servers who make the entire experience a fun time! read more

Ichiban Shrimp was tough & chewy because it was overcooked, tuna sashimi was not fresh & had a fishy aftertaste. Service was decent however they have huge shoes to fill! It really is a shame that after many years of great quality food & outstanding customer service it can all be undone by changing a few key people in such a short period of time. Speedy, tasty, and affordable! This is an awesome place to dine! A few colleagues and I called in our orders since we only had one hour for lunch. When we arrived, our food was ready, so all we had to do was pay and enjoy our lunch in the restaurant. I ordered a caterpillar roll, which had surprisingly large rolls - compared to other sushi places I've patronized. I also opted for a mango tea with tapioca, which was perfect and kept the food coma away in the afternoon. I may have found a new sushi place I like in SL! I hope to return. read more

Oh my God is this place a huge hit at work. They have always given us great food which keeps us coming back to them. The restaurant isn't as glitzy as some sushi places tend to be, it's a small family restaurant. Their sushi is customizable, at least online, in case you want to add/remove ingredients. Ichiban offers a variety of dishes too not just sushi. Their bento boxes are very filling for the price. I'm a big fan of their appetizers too (stuffed jalapeños are sooo good!). But he wasn't happy at all with it. We're big foodies and I must say that some of these reviews were misleading. The place was alright but we've had better food. I guess the location also hypes it up more since it's close to Hwy 6. Over all the place is nice but not somewhere I see myself coming back to eat at. First time eating here, it was ok. I had a bento box and the miso soup was warm at best, salad ok missed the tanginess that the dressing usually has. The peas I didn't try they didn't look too appetizing to me. I ordered the spider roll and it was ok but smelled really fishy (hope I don't get sick) also the place is really tiny and it feels really weird eating while the staff is watching you. I enjoy coming to Ichiban whenever I'm back in Houston. It's very low-key, the restaurant is clean, and the servers are so nice. It's a great place to go when I want good Japanese food for fairly inexpensive prices. The sashimi is fresh, and I absolutely love their spider crab. It's delicious! :-) Their lunch bento boxes are a great deal. You get so much food for, on average, $7.95. For example, if you get the chicken teriyaki bento, you'll get miso soup, a crisp salad, the chicken teriyaki, four california rolls, and... hmm.. I feel like there's more, but I'm forgetting. I guess it's time to go back. :-) Also, they have good quality pearl milk tea. My cousin likes to stop by there just to get their pearl milk tea. The milk tea isn't too sweet like other places, and the tapioca balls are just chewy enough. Yum! It's not that great a place for large groups as it's a fairly small restaurant, but it should work for groups no larger than 8 people. read more

I absolutely LOVE this sushi spot! The workers are very attentive and fast paced, and the ambiance is so cozy and simple. If it is packed -there's a 50/50 chance it is either very busy or there's barely anyone there- it isn't terribly loud and crowded, despite how small and simple the restaurant is. The menu is straight forward and the pricing is fair, not too cheap and not insanely expensive like other sushi places. I have yet to try their warm/plate dishes like the entrees or bento's since I favor sushi and appetizers, but I can imagine they're just as good. Overall a good experience with our to go items. Luckily I got there and they were in the process of bagging our order up so we ate it fresh!! We had the shrimp tempura which was fantastic, gyoza, two rolls, and a kids meal. Everything was to our taste and the sauces were good.
