I would have loved to have written a review for this place but we never even sat to eat. Came here with my family to celebrate a birthday in the family. My father is in a wheelchair and they were unable to seat him. If you or anyone you know is in a wheelchair avoid this place at all cost. There were a few spots that were open that may have accommodated him but they were reserved and of course they could not give up those spots to accommodate us. This place definitely seems to have gone downhill in the past few years. Awful dinner experience -- I ordered the "Sushi Plate" but what arrived was different from what the menu described, so I inquired, to ensure I didn't get someone else's order. The server insisted there is no dinner "Sushi Plate" (showed me a menu where the dinner price was taped over, but my earlier menu had a dinner price) and that this was a similar alternative (and conveniently 50% more expensive!). Ichiban has always been my go to sushi spot in Downey. I've been coming here since 2002, however after my latest experience I won't be returning. The older lady was ruder than ever. She came to our table removing plates before we even finished them and not once did she ask us if we would like anything else. When I asked for the check and paid my bill she had no shame in coming up to me demanding a higher tip. I'm sorry, but the tip I left was what she deserved for her service. Yes the food was delicious, butttttt the tip does not go to the chef, the tip is for the service, the attitude, and the hospitality of the server. I told her I could make it a zero if she liked but that I would not be giving her an 18% tip for her rudeness, she stood there for a few minutes giving me the death stare. My two kids and 80 year old aunt picked up on her trying to intimidate me into giving a higher tip. It was extremely uncomfortable and unnecessary. I use to love coming here because it felt very homey. The staff use to interact so kindly with myself and my children (ever since my teens were babies) up until they "revamped" the menu. Sake choice is Ozeki nigori, supreme as always cold served, perfect temperature. Old stained glass :( We ordered 3 different rolls: spider, baked lobster and a California roll. While the spider and California roll fell behind in the generic. The baked lobster was superior in many aspects. Fresh ingredients, but not really fairly priced as the amount of food on the plate did not match either the value nor the quality. If the prices would drop 2 dollars per plate or volume on them increment this would make them go to 4 starts but this place offers you good food at a fair price. The poki is super fresh. Best green tea I've tested. The marlow roll is pretty yummy. The mango sorbet with fried banana is my vice. Love the miso soup. Four stars because the service varies from good to, uhhh am I invisible? The only time we were served quickly was when I went 15 minutes before closing. This has been my family's sushi spot for over 4 years now. I have tried sushi from many locations and nowhere do they have the taste Ichiban does. Every sushi roll has a combination of flavors that mesh well together. The waitresses are always kind and attentive. The chefs are also fun and kind when you sit at the sushi bar. I recommend sitting at the bar when you can because they give complementary sushi rolls or wraps that you probably would not try outside of your own order. Service is attentive - maybe a bit much. Literally seconds after I finished a plate, someone came to swoop the dish away. I didn't feel rushed by the staff. I just felt that they hovered over me. Picture yourself in middle school taking [what was then] a major exam and having a teacher constantly walk up and down the aisles looking over your shoulder. Although this yelp review is a bit late I'd like to start off stating how they have a good miso soup, you may ask yourself if that's the only thing I ordered and it was not I ordered a California roll with tempura and chicken teriyaki. As well as a Marlow role and caterpillar roll. Starting off the portions on the take out for the chicken were extremely short, I don't think even subway cheaps you out on the chicken that much. Both other sets of rolls Marlow and Caterpillar simply did not live up to the taste this establishment received since it was a recommendation, your best bet is to try samurai down the street. Great sushi spot located in Downtown Downey. The outside of Ichiban doesn't look to appealing but the inside of this place is great. Sometimes Parking can be a pain because there is so much going on in that area with Porto's and bars that are there. I usually just avoid looking for Street parking and go straight into the parking structure and walk on over. The people are friendly and offer great service. As soon as you walk in through the door they greet you with a hello and a smile. They're attentive and your sushi is brought out quickly. I ordered the garlic edamame which is a must and the spider roll. Everything was good, filling and fresh. The Restrooms are very clean and well maintained. I've been to this location many times and every time I've had a great experience. I come here about 3 times a year. read more
