The soup had good consistency, the added spices gave it the necessary kick it needed, all in all, I was left very satisfied The Seattle roll had a nice feel to it, and the best thing about it was, had I ordered the Seattle roll by itself, it would have been more than enough, that speaks volumes as to the size and taste of the roll The fixings were a nice touch, fried shrimp and a salad which I ate in it's entirety Drinks Can't really say as I had a glass of water. The water came with a lemon, which was pleasant, but it does not beat the cucumber and that's probably my only complaint Price Very reasonable, affordable and the food left you full but not stuffed and that's worth the price of admission Conclusion I was not expecting much, so I was pleasantly surprised, as I've said, and while I would not return right away as I have many other places to try out, I'm not against the idea. I've been to Ichiban more than 10 times for sure. I've never had an unpleasant food experience. I always get the DUI and Seattle roll and they always taste amazing. Sometimes the attention to the table is not that great and I've been there when it's busy and also when no one is there. In both occasions I've had trouble getting the waitresses or they simply forget my request. However most times they've been good waitresses. This is one of the worst Sushi bars I've been to. We walked in and they greeted us and they sat us, but when we sat down we were not given any menu's and we sat for about 15-20 minutes before my wife got up to go grab some menus herself (we were forgotten about and it wasn't even busy). After we placed our order, 10-15 minutes go by waiting for our food the waitress asked me if I was ready to order after we already had placed the order. The soy sauce dish they gave us were dirty as well. The food was below ok and we couldn't wait to get out of the restaurant. It also took two people to give us our check. It pains me to write this but Ichiban really has changed over the years, for the worse. This was my go to spot, I easily would tell people it was my favorite sushi spot. The food and environment were always great. I was a regular at the bar area, and unfortunately I never got their names but there was a super nice man who was the head sushi chef, and another man with glasses that worked there that made a visit so great. The food was great, and their service was great. About a year ago or so, they disappeared. I don't know if they were fired or chose to leave, but when they left that's when I noticed the little by little change in Ichiban. The sunset roll, which was one of my favorites, tastes bland and doesn't even seem like it's baked anymore. And the main thing is the fish doesn't taste fresh anymore. And this past friday I realized why. I saw a box labled 'frozen albacore', and that was the last time I think i'll eat there. A shame, this place used to be great. read more

It's because people occasionally get lazy that places like Ichiban exist. There are times when the only thing in life you want is some sushi. Hell, you'll even settle for *decent* sushi. And there are times when one wants what they have for dinner to be directly across the street from a movie theater. Because we're lazy. Occasionally. It's not like we're the fattest country in the world or anything. I hadn't had sushi in a while and a friend of mine wanted to repay a favor. My driving services are apparently worth some bland sushi. Before I can even get to the actual food, it has to be said: The service SUCKED. We didn't order anything fancy because my friend had only been here once and I could tell it wasn't gonna be great sushi. I had a this-isn't-gonna-knock-your-socks-off-vibe. So we ordered very easy and simple rolls: California Roll, Crunchy Roll, Philly Roll, and I asked for some Spicy Scallops. We waited a good 20 minutes for these rolls and the table next to us, that arrived after us, got their food before we did. And they ordered fancier rolls. Plus instead of my Spicy Scallops I got a Spicy Scallop Roll. I didn't dare send it back for fear that my grandchildren would have been born while waiting and I would have missed it. More than likely, I would have forgiven the poor service if the rolls were good. They were just, meh. Edible. But, like a make-out session after you're expecting the horizontal mambo, it was disappointing, frustrating and unsatisfying. Good thing we didn't try some actual sushi. The rolls were bland, and while I love cream cheese, it was too much in the Philly Roll. Plus the Crunchy Roll didn't have enough crunch. So what was the lesson learned? I never knew Downey had a cute little downtown area with mom and pop shops and restaurants. I noticed there were hair salons every 15 feet. Really do you need THAT many salons in a half a mile radius?? I guess it's in demand in downtown Downey. The menu consisted of many different combinations of tempura, teriyaki chicken/beef/salmon, california rolls etc. They have a lunch special for like $7 bucks which comes with teriyaki chicken, california rolls and some breaded fish. My friends decided to order the lunch special. I had the beef teriyaki and tempura combo. All the combinations come with salad and miso soup. I really liked the salad dressing--kinda like thousand island with a kick. The beef was a little tough. I was starving so I had no choice but to give my jaw a workout and eat it. They also had a variety of specialty rolls of which we ordered the Hot Night Roll. Its a shrimp tempura roll with spicy tuna on top--it was good. For desert we ordered the fried bananas with vanilla ice cream. I would highly recommend ordering a small appetizer and then just having this all to yourself for desert--yeah it's THAT good! read more

Yellow tail Sashimi & OMG.. Those efen slivers of fish were the smallest I have ever had. WTF?? 7(tiny thin)pcs for $12. I don't know if I've been spoiled at other places or if these folks are simply tight w/their sashimi. We also tried the Marlow roll. It was pretty good. Yet smaller than most rolls I am use to. Another thing I wasn't too fond of, is the room we sat in. It was the back room of the place & there are four or five tables. The room is kind of small so you can hear everyone's conversations. I've eaten here plenty of times and always receive a warm welcome. The food, along with the service is great, and the chefs are so nice and funny. I would definitely recommend this place for a first date, or for future dates, as it has a nice romantic setting, the booths and tables are private (Bamboo shoots between the sides of neighboring tables). How I wish that I could have given this place a 5 star. For starters, I am a big fan of snall businesses. I can walk to this place from my home. I know that the downtown part of downey will blow up now that Portos is in town but I was somewhat disappointed in the rolls. The taste wasn't that great. For the price, I was expecting rolls the size of Maki Yaki's rolls. The place is cozy and has the whole in the wall feel to it. The service wasn't that great but I liked the place. When we were finally seated, the table was very sticky and the vinyl seat covers cracked. I asked the waitress to wipe the table down and she ignored me. This is my favorite sushi place. Once a week must have for me. Everything I've had has been amazing. Everyone there is so friendly and prices are great especially with the quality of the food. Miso soup is delicious as well as the popcorn roll, tiger roll and DUI roll. Customer service is great as well, very attentive and never keep our area piled with dishes. I love the atmosphere here they always play good music but not loud to the point where you can't have a conversation.
