I was here sometime last month. I was craving sushi after going to a Teppanyaki Steak house the previous day. I really liked the place, we sat at the bar and our sushi chef was nice & polite very talkative as well haha. What I really liked about the sushi here is that the cuts of fish aren't a rip off. My husband and I walked here after seeing the insane line outside nearby Porto's Bakery for lunch today. I remember Ichiban's sushi bar being decent from my visit nearly a decade ago, so we sat at the bar and I asked if they do omakase (chef's selections of premium sushi, sashimi, small plates), and the sushi chef Kenji said they do, but for dinner. We were fine with that, since it takes extra time and attention for the chef to do. We perused the sushi menu to order, and then the chef offered to do the omakase for us for lunch anyway. Score! First he checked our preferences. We like fresh and raw, no fried stuff, no rolls please. We were soon given a giant boat with 4 generously cut sashimi pieces EACH of yellowtail belly, salmon, ahi, ono (exclusive elusive ONO!), seared albacore, and red snapper. Also on the boat was a little bowl of salmon caviar and what I think may be flying fish roe. The fish was tender, fresh, delicious. Then we got a small dish of seaweed salad, and another platter of 5 different kinds of nigiri sushi, 2 pieces each (salmon, yellowtail, can't remember the others in this blissful food coma I'm still in). And then, a plate with a cooked lobster dish and a raw spicy ahi "salad" (no greens). Later came four amaebi (sweet shrimp) with another two slices of yellowtail sashimi. The chef apologized a few times that the uni isn't good today because the poor weather in Santa Barbara prevented divers from getting a good harvest, so they didn't have really good fresh uni. I think he gave us the amaebi to make up for the lack of uni. It was SO GOOD that we didn't care about the uni! We ended with a pair of warm, perfectly torched freshwater eel (unagi) nigiri. Lunch was so amazing that we expected a huge price tag, but were shocked to see they charged us $40/pp for the omakase. The same meal in LA would easily cost double and be called reasonable. We SHALL return! What an unexpectedly great Valentine's lunch. read more

I use to LOVE this place. So much so that when I found a bug underneath a plate, I let it slide. I mean I've been there at least 20 times before and never had a problem. But the rice was soggy and the fish mushy. Quality was awful. Plus, there was a baby near us who took a dump and the parents just kept holding it. It smelled... I wanted to leave, asked for the check, but our waitress decided to do other things, including asking if the poop baby family needed more drinks, got them the drinks, and I had to remind her for the check. Restaurant had 2 people sitting down. 4 waitresses doing absolutely nothing pretending to be busy and 2 sushi chefs unwilling to make eye contact to one person waiting to be served at the front. I waited, tried to get anyone's attention, for 45 minutes. Remember, there are only 2 people actually eating in the restaurant at this time. Finally I flagged down a waitress and she goes "how can I help you?" You can help me by paying attention to the customer. Not coming here ever again, not cool to make someone wait 45 minutes while you are obviously not doing anything else but pretending to be busy. This has turned into our family's go to spot. The kids split an order of gyoza and the kids meal. We make certain an order of miso soup is made for everyone at the table. B and I like the Sunset and the Tiger rolls. They're a staple for each visit. The other cut rolls are yummy, although we tend to stick with the same ones. The service is good, but be certain to communicate your needs whenever you have the servers attention. You can feel forgotten at times, but I think it's due to the servers wanting to not bother the conversation at the table. the location is small, but very accommodating. Extremely dissatisfied with the food, this used to be one of the best spots in downey, I have been coming here for years and would always bring friends and tell people about how good and fresh their sushi is, but today was a whole different animal. #1 the DUI roll used to have more salmon all the way around and now its half way. #2 the SNAKE roll was nasty, it was cold and the crab meat in the middle tasted awful, the Unagi on top was not tasteful. #3 the Edemami, had a totally different taste, seemed low quality. #4 the atmosphere, they used to play music in the background, and it was dead silent on a Thursday night, I brought my Fiancee on a date here and this is the last time I'm coming here. #5 we were sitting by the bar next to the kitchen, and my fiance saw the waitress bring out a soup and she picked up something from the soup with her bare hands and ate it before bringing it out to the customer sitting at the bar end of the corner, she was probably hungry, but you don't stick your fingers in customers food. I would say the sushi here is pretty good. I ordered two rolls, a catapillar and the vampire roll. Both tasted good to me. The wifey had the beef udon and the fried banana ice cream for desert. She said they were "meh". For me, the place would have gotten four stars, but for the inefficient service. The hostess totally ignored the sign in sheet. So people who pushed to the front got seated first. And the food came out randomly. My wife got her udon way after I got my rolls. But the server did screw up and bring me a miso soup and salad when I didn't order one, and left them for me to eat and didn't charge me after we discovered the mistake. read more

Very good little sushi spot. I met a friend here for lunch mid week, and was glad he recommended this place as soon as I walked in. It just had some kind of vibe that made me feel like this was going to be a good lunch. It just didn't feel like the other million sushi places... maybe this is run by Japanese? I don't know, but had a good feel right away. I had one of their lunch combo plates that had assorted sushi, and also ordered a Pong roll which was very good. The various sushi was all very good. Tuna had amazing color, texture and flavor. I think I even had some albacore that was NOT seared!. Oh yeah. I've only seen that at a couple places, and I love it... the searing really changes the flavor for me (for the worse). There was that albacore, tuna, ono, delicious salmon, and prob 3 more types of fish in the combo I ordered. The pong roll I think had spicy tuna and cream cheese and something else I am forgetting... It was a new twist on the cream cheese type rolls, and I loved it. Now I just have to get my buddy to meet me here for dinner so we can have a few beers. I definitely recommend this if you are in the area. Downey old-timers might recall that in a previous life Ichiban Sushi was known as "Sam Mallet's Coffee Shop," (Sam Mallett was obviously one for no-frills self-promotion). And with a little imagination, you can see how this place pretty much looks like a 60's era coffee shop with a bunch of inexpensive Pier-1 Japanese adornments thrown about. That said, what Ichiban might lack in aesthetics, it makes up for in the quality of the sushi and the easygoing vibe that permeates the place. Ichiban isn't located on a busy commercial street--it's tucked away on a small side street in the central part of town. It has the feel of a friendly neighborhood joint, and when our family goes there we always wait for four spots at the sushi bar where we enjoy the special attention we get from the chefs. I work right at the edge of Little Tokyo in Los Angeles, where my favorite sushi spot is Sushi Gen in Honda Plaza. I can honestly say that many of the offerings at Ichiban are of similar quality to Sushi Gen. In particular, the "hamachi," the "unagi," and the "toro" are always fresh and pleasing.
