We came in here because we were starving and had an event going on around the corner. It is in a very cool section of Downey I had never been to before. The reason we went into Ichiban was because it was open. The sushi was good, the tempura was so-so. The service was also very so-so. That was the downer for me. We waited a long time for the food and the restaurant wasn't crowded. Then the order was wrong and it took even longer to get the right stuff. I really didn't care about that, I was more bothered that the staff just didn't care. The other thing that bothered me I almost hesitate to write here. I feel almost as if the staff was laughing at me. I can't explain it, but it felt like they were talking and laughing about/at me. I have never had this happen in my life and my partner agreed when I pointed it out to him. I love most people and am not paranoid. Been coming here for many many years. Today I decided to make a phone order for pick up on my way home from work. I called at exactly 2:46pm. The lady said I can order food if I can get there within 5-10 minutes because they close at 3pm. I was sure I could make it in 10 minutes and then she changed it and said I have to be there in 5 minutes. Hahaha I told her I was close by and to please prepare my order. She refused. I felt I had no value. How can I give my money to this place for years and they treat the customer this way. The customer has ZERO value here. I'll NEVER go back again. Simply pathetic. NOTHING SPECIAL. Walked in with my boyfriend to grab a beer and some small bites while we were waiting for a movie to start. It has a great location since its located right across the krikorian theater; however, theres really nothing special about the food. We had a sapporo beer and ordered a crunchy cut roll and a b-38 sushi roll, both stated to have shrimp tempura in them. I find the rolls to be mainly consisted of avocado and the "fresh" salmon topped on the sushi roll isn't fresh at all. Wait...and I couldnt find shrimp tempura in both rolls. Pretty disappointed. Not to mention that the the food was way over priced for the quality and quantity. The place looked cozy and nice so we walked in expecting the food to be decent. The beer tasted good and the staffs were friendly. I wouldnt come here next time. Should had just walked to Porto's, it was just a couple steps away. read more

Never had Sushi before. I don't count California Rolls as Sushi. Edamame is really tasty! Best thing they have on this menu is the dizzying array of rolls. My preference so far is the Marlow Roll! Delicious! Nothing like I anticipated prior to trying it out! The decor is cool, although the booths are too small. The place is kind of hidden in Downtown Downey but the patrons like it that way. Still going strong! If you're a sushi and roll lover- you will love this place. I'm torn because I don't want this place to get so crowded that I have to wait to sit, but I have to say this has become one of my favorite sushi spots. Always fresh and flavorful. Prices are very reasonable for their quality and they offer great dinner combos that I've yet to find elsewhere. Try their spicy tuna, firecracker roll, assorted sushi and b38 roll. Service used to be kind of spotty I will admit, but I've noticed some new workers and everyone seems very helpful. I'll start by saying this was one my favorite spot in Downey for Sushi but my experience yesterday was by far horrible. Seattle roll was dry or rice was over cooked. How could you go wrong with the basic Sushi California or Crunch roll. The California roll was tasteless because of the over cooked rice on it. The Crunch roll tasted so bad because of the crunch. It tasted as if they use oil that was put away or reuse. I was so upset to pay a $80 tab when all the food was terrible and the only good thing was the Mochi. It was definitely the last time I come to this place. No wonder the place was empty and not busy as usual. Obviously People are doing their research before coming here. I'm so glad. Hopefully the owner reads the reviews and makes the changes necessary to their food. I should ha e known better when I saw the place was shut down and reopen. So disappointed!!! read more

Well gotta say I LOVE LOVE LOVE this sushi place - outside was kinda creepy but when you go in everyone is so nice and i sat at the sushi bar - menu very xtensive my fave spicy tuna roll, baked mussels (3) so fricking yummy!!! & i also had seared ahi & seared salmon sushi - the pieces they gave were huge - reminded me of (KURU KURI in Pearlcity, HI) very yummy - i then had to get the Tempura Udon - broth amazing!! didnt quite care for the bell pepper & broccoli tempura - loved the shrimp & carrot tempura - so much food had to take some back to the HOTEL!! prices ok..I WILL B BACK!!! read more

Ichiban sushi is one of the more popular spots in Downey. It's got a great setting and awesome food. Went in on a Sunday evening and like always no wait to get seated. Got the Aki roll and the spicy tuna inside the roll has a nice kick. Also got some oysters which were fresh and ebi shumai that I couldn't get enough of it. My only issue was my large Sapporo came out a bit warm and that is usually the case. read more

But after I went on Friday afternoon, i must say all the tables in the back by the restrooms are were full with tons lint where we sat by. The food is okay (not amazing, but not bad either), but every time I have called in to place an order, they always say that they cannot hear, and abruptly hang up. At first, I thought it was my cell (I usually get bad signal anyways), but when I'd call with someone else's phone or my landline, they would say the same thing ("Hello, hello?" And then hang up, or say that they cannot hear me even though I can hear them perfectly fine). If you don't want to take phone orders, then just say that instead of being rude and hanging up. When I have eaten inside the restaurant, the staff takes a long time to take our orders, get refills, etc...(it seems like the only time they come promptly to our table is when we are paying). I had the nigri plate and I could tell each individual piece had been made with attention to detail.The sushi wasn't the freshest,but the preparation saved it. Oh my god. Get their DUI roll, the Sunset, the agedashi tofu, the Marlow, and the Vegas. Those rolls are insane. Their portions are awesome, and their sashimi is fresh and plentiful. The service is great, and it's a quiet out-of-the way place. They have amazing green tea, it's very likely matcha, which is subtle and really complements the sashimi in particular. This is my second time here after a very successful first visit. I ordered the DUI roll after seeing 3 reviewers rate it pretty high. Not a fan. I think the texture of the tuna was off.
