Ichiban Sushi is a typical Japanese sushi restaurant owned by Koreans. Their parking lot may be a bit tricky to park in and I haven't had to wait for seating. My first experience was okay. The food was delicious and decently priced, but the service was not good. The food took awhile to come and the waitress was neither friendly or rude. It was my second visit that was the deal breaker. My boyfriend and I ordered what we ordered the first time we were here since it was delicious (Dinner special and Sashimi regular plate. Grand total about $30), and as usual, the food took awhile to arrive. As usual, food was delicious. The trouble started when we got the bill. My boyfriend paid with his credit card and we waited about 15 minutes before we asked for our receipt. Our waitress told us that the machine was broken so we waited about another 10 minutes until we got out of our booth to see what was taking so long. Their card machine wasn't working (we don't blame them for that) and wanted us to pay with cash, which we did not have with us at the moment. They asked us to go to an ATM machine to withdraw some money, but that would result in a fee which we did not want to pay due to their broken machine. After about another 10 minutes of trying to work the machine, we finally found some cash to pay for our meal. I wasn't angry that their machine was broken, but because of their service! They did not even take the time to tell us that it may take awhile to process the card and had no sympathy that we had to wait so long. We waited over 30 minutes to get our receipt and they did not offer a discount. After our dilemma, the waitress went around the restaurant asking customers to pay with cash instead of card due to their broken machine, and I overheard some customers saying they don't have enough cash. There were about 5 other tables eating when we left and I wonder how the restaurant dealt with that problem... BOTTOM LINE: Good food at reasonable prices but HORRIBLE service. If I could give this spot 0 stars I would. This is literally the most disgusting sushi I've ever tried in my life. Do not go here, seriously. And when we asked the waitress what a popular roll was, she said "the whole menu is popular." Super helpful advice. If you are to listen to anything I'm saying, go down the street to Kyotos. Far surpasses any sushi in the area. Ugh. I am just disgusted. Yuck yuck yuck. Never again. Trust me. The 1 star I had to give was for the glass of wine I had. Food is ok but my review is not much about that because I will never go back to that place. I've been there several times and all the other times I've never footed the bill so I don't know. The last time I went there was with a co-worker and I paid. I am normally a very generous tipper. I paid using my debit card and included the tip. I can't believe to my surprise my bank statement came in and they added more to their tip. I think it's bogus. I will never eat there again. This is my second time here after a very successful first visit. I ordered the DUI roll after seeing 3 reviewers rate it pretty high. Not a fan. I think the texture of the tuna was off. Seemed too mushy like a pate. However the geisha roll was amazing!!!!! Who knew fried onions would be so good. You must be able to handle spicy though since the rolls come topped with jalapeños. We thought the restaurant had a very calming ambiance. It was clear that the furniture, tabletops, and booths were made of a high end wood. The sushi chefs and waitresses were pleasant. We ordered the following the Chef Sushi Signature plate, which had 10 different raw fishes (the tuna was great), the sunset baked salmon roll (amazing), teriyaki beef (pretty good), and banana tempura with green tea ice cream. Overpriced for a small amount of Japanese food (which is a reason I don't eat Japanese food yet love it). Sushi's decent, it's a bit better than kyotos depending on what you order, but don't order any non sushi items, they're mediocre at best and mushy, chewy or microwavy usually. I found that it lacks a bit of the authentic flare of some Japanese restaurants, however it has the best ambiance of all of them in this City. It isn't very kid friendly though, if you have a kid, they will sit you in an unpleasant corner of the restaurant and act very annoyed even if your kid isn't do anything tantrum-y which kind of sucks cause I have a kid and I have to feed him too. I use to like this place. Over the last 2 years this place has gone down the toilet. The service is unbelievably horrible every time. I cannot believe how bad they mess up. I've given it a few chances but it's worse every time. They take sooooo long to bring out food. Even to get your order and water out. It's very embarrassing to see. The menu is not exactly inspired, but if you get a spot at the bar with Eugene and ask him to make you some of his specials, you're in for a treat! The man is an artist. I came here for a friend's bday. I already have a sushi house that im really loyal to but it was my friends bday and she wanted to come here... I'm a vegetarian but I never have any issues finding veggie rolls at Sushi houses. My only option was a california roll. When I asked if they could modify one of the rolls for me (by replacing the shrimp tempura with veggie tempura) the lady said no. I was basically forced to get the CA roll. It was ok. nothing special. The miso soup was also ok. I've definitely experienced better. Oh, and the rolls were more expensive than what Im used to and for smaller portions. Not down. We were ignored at the door for five minutes, the guy who came in after us was greeted first. We were then seated at a dirty table that was not wiped down. We waited another ten minutes, at which point we saw the people who were seated after us being served. We asked hostess when we would be served, and her reply was not very friendly. Laziest sushi place I have ever discovered ... First no such thing as a saki bomb (I understand if this location is authentic but it's not) the laziest cucumber sushi roll of my life ... I mine as well just have bit an entire cucumber. No attention to details the cucumber was not Juliann but thick cuts ... The albacore roll was not completely wrapped ... And the service was horrible you would think the waitress hated her job. All in all this place needs some major adjustments. read more

I miss going to Ichiban; sometimes you'd find me there twice a week! I love their specialty rolls; Geisha is my favorite. Perfect for a dinner date. Very cozy little spot with plenty of seating. You may wait a bit during peak hours but most of the times you get seated right away. Always fresh, always clean, great service too. read more

I'm Asian, and before Ichiban I couldn't really distinguish the difference between fresh fish and fresh-but-might-have-been-sitting-here-a-week-or-so fish. I was first introduced to this place when my friend got the job and wanted me to check it out. Table for 1, looking like a dork, about to eat sushi alone. Well behold, I was not so alone. The second I sat down at the sushi bar the people around me just started talking to me. Yes, most of the people at that bar are regulars, and who better to ask about the place then them? They guys there were telling me what's good, introducing me to the sushi chiefs, telling me all about Aki and his wife's story... I swear it was like an episode of Happy Days or something. Almost expected to see Scott Baio to walk in, almost. Back to the gist of it all, Ichiban has great sushi. I'm more a sashimi eater but whenever I go there I get a Pong, B38 or DUI roll. The rolls there are phenomenal. And even though I know that there's no way in hell that I'll be capable of finishing more than one roll, I always order two. The dynamite appetizer is dank too. Yes I just referred to salmon as dank, get over it. As for the service, the girls are nice. Especially the sisters (!); they're fast on their feet and know what's up in that restaurant. Be sure to get them a drink, and if you're sitting at the bar don't forget about the chiefs. I wouldn't say I'm a regular because I can't remember anyone's name, but I do always get great service and somebody buys me a shot (hehe). Side note: If you're a big sake drinker, they have a large variety of cold sake. I personally like the bubbly one in the pink glass. Mmm good stuff. read more

This used to be my go to spot for sushi. I ate at Ichiban at least twice a month for almost 10 years and never had a bad experience. The rolls were always on point and delicious. I came in for dinner in early January and ordered some rolls and noticed right away that they were significantly smaller than before and lacked any flavor. Well I waited a month and went back last night hoping it was just a bad night and I was disappointed to find out it wasn't. The rolls are tiny now and have no flavor and you'd think since they're serving half the size Rolls that they used to the price would drop in half but that's definitely not the case.. I hope you guys get your shit together Ichiban because I'd hate to see a Downey staple shut down after so many years. read more

I really like this place. Food, ambience & décor are all good. On most weekends there is a bit of a wait, which I don't mind, but there's no where to really wait. There is a tiny waiting area located just inside the entrance, so many people wait outside. It looks like there may have been a bench out there at one point, but now there is no place to sit. Horrible!! We've been coming here for years and it's just been a declined. DO NOT get the lobster roll. They used to give a lot of lobster on top of the roll and now they're super stingy and still charging the $18 for it. be mindful of your bill also. They automatically added a 18% tip to our bill.
