This is a good restaurant. Been coming here for years with co-workers and family. Parking can be a bit of a chore on their lot or street. There is a public parking structure right across the street. All right, so I have returned to Ichiban twice since writing my original review and I have to retract everything I said about the place. If you can ignore the horrible Frank Sinatra/Amy Winehouse music, and ignorant people who come here just to order a chicken teriyaki combo for their six kids, I recommend this for anyone looking for some good sushi. read more

I'd have to agree with Danny Q. on this one. Although I have had better, this restaurant has great service. Plus, in the 7 or so times I have gone, they've never messed up our order. More than half of my visits have been with parties of 6 or more. I remember on my second trip it was my friend's birthday. There were 13 of us and we had called in ahead. They put us in this large section in the back, by the Sapporo tap. The restaurant was not too busy that day, which was great for us because our waitress would literally hang back and just wait for us to ask for something else. That to me says great service. Now for the food. Like Danny Q., I recommend the DUI Roll. But, in my opinion you should really try the Pong Roll. That roll is delicious!! The Vampire Roll is good too, although this last time there wasn't as much spicy garlic sauce. I've never had their other dishes, as in the chicken katsu and stuff. Most people I've gone with have said their other food is good. Although, I have cousin who wasn't impressed by that stuff. Just give this place a try, I'm sure you will like it. read more

Ichiban provides a cool atmosphere to people who are looking to slam some sushi in Downey. The place is a bit small and waiting for a table can be a drag because thre is vitually no waiting area. All in all its a good place to take a date or a small group of friends. Reasonable prices as well. read more

I just had the worst experience here. The server sat us in a far corner with another family that had one lil girl. The waitress took our order of drinks and meal. My lil ones ordered miso soup. The drinks and food came out but no soup. I had ordered an app but it never came. When we asked about the soup she ran and got it after sushi. Then when we asked about app she had no clue. She only brought us place settings for 3 we are a family of 4. We couldn't even get her to come back in a timely manor. The poor family next to is said she asked them if they have a problem. Food us good usually. The service today was horrible. I have her $1 tip and wrote on the ticket she would of had more if she remembered our order. read more

This is my all time favorite spot:) I've been coming here since I Turned 21 now 32.... The rolls are great,The staff is nice, and I love that they pick up your done dishes. Try a DUI, Tiger roll and sunkissed roll you can't go wrong. They are usually busy on weekends and holidays so you might have LONG wait or it may take a while to receive your meals. You can order out and they're usually pretty fast. If you can't find parking in back you can park across the street. The only thing I miss about this place is there repeat of John Mayer, Amy Winehouse and Michael Buble albums:) read more

OK so before I start this review I want to preface by saying I eat here often. I don't hate it. I occasionally crave it, BUT it's really not all that good. I am a Downian, born and raised.. Ichiban is cheap sushi in Downey. I have a soft spot for it. The serve is hit or miss. I have waited an hour for 3 rolls before and I have gotten my food in minutes on other occasions. They have creative rolls. I know Marlow personally and thank him for creating the Marlow roll. The DUI roll is also I thumbs up. The service really knocks this place down a star, and the fish isn't as fresh as it could be every time. The time I waited an hour for 3 rolls was horrendous, we watched 3 parties come in , eat and leave before we got our rolls and when we complained they said they'd do better next time. I boycotted for about 6 months, but its a block away from my work and you can't beat that on a lunch break. Try their plum wine, its killer. read more

I've been to Ichiban dozens of times over the last 15 years. When I worked closer, it was almost a weekly thing. They are a good place for lunch. Good lunch specials focusing on either sushi or sashimi abound. There are also non-fish items for those who don't like sushi (but why would such a person choose to come here?). I normally get the sashimi lunch. The fish is of decent quality, though it is not amazing. I've had almost all the sushi and sashimi options at one time or another. Some of the rolls demonstrate some creativity (DUI or B-38), while others are pretty generic. They don't have unique or special kinds of fish normally. The servers mostly do not speak the greatest English. But they do the best they can. They are pleasant, not rude or mean in the least, and do their best. I went to lunch recently with a friend who has severe dietary restrictions and they accommodated his special order without a problem. What does one really expect at this kind of place anyway? The prices are reasonable for sushi. If you think this place is expensive, then you really have not gone to a high end sushi place. But that is not what this place is. Then again, if this place is the "best you've ever had", then you've never had the good stuff anyway. I would not come here for dinner because this is in downtown Downey and the Downey PD are super aggressive and you will get arrested for even a sip of beer or sake with dinner. I really enjoy coming to Ichiban to get my sushi fix. Staff here are very friendly, although service can leave a little more to be desired at times. But it just seems they tend to get overwhelmed. They make up for it with the food. I really have only ordered sushi & rolls here so I can't vouch for the other dishes. Although I have had a couple of starters such as baked mussels (good) and gyoza (also good). Miso soup is yummy as well. Now for the rolls......the DUI roll is among my favorites. The other ones I have enjoyed were the Seattle roll, Firecracker roll, Sunset roll, which has baked salmon & mayo.....very good. There is only one roll here I have tried which I didn't care for....can't remember the name but it has "rasberry sauce" in it, which it describes on the menu so you know that when ordering. Sounded interesting but when I tried, wasn't a good combination....I would not order that again. All in all, I love this place. Good sushi, cozy atmosphere. It is also right across the street from the movie theater so it is convenient. There are a handful of other restaurants adjacent to Ichiban, yet this is where I always see the most people, so that should tell you something...... read more

Had about 30 mins to kill before a movie started so came in and had a seat at the bar. Waited about 5 mins before we got waters, another give for menus. Once order was ready we handed to head chef and waiting another 15 mins just sitting there waiting for food. The guy was nice and gave us two plates on the house but that wasn't enough to make up for the wait. The two rolls we had were sloppy and the fish was def not fresh. When it came time for the check, that was a mess too. It took another 15 and asking three waitresses before we got a check. Turns out the gave it to the couple next to us got and they paid it, so we had to wait to void . Then we were charged for two extra rolls we didn't have. So we had to wait and have them correct that. About 45-60 mins later we were asking for refund on the movie tickets because there were no later showings. So disappointed, on top of that my friend said the head chef never once washed his hands. He handled at least a dozen plates and not once did he rinse off. Ugh, never again. read more

Its local, its the freshest sushi in town, and its reasonably priced. They have a long list of specialty rolls, I recommend the John Wayne and DUI. The price is good for the big meals. Food is great- the place has a B though. The restroom is pretty messy, there's a toilet by the sink outside of the stall. It's a pretty chill place, except...there's this one server lady who tries to rush you to finish, the other servers are pretty cool. Went here when my husband and I first moved to Downey back in June. Our local friend told us to go here for sushi. My husband loved it because they line the walls of the seaweed with wasabi. I love spicy but not wasabi. However, service was great, sushi tasted fresh and delicious (even with the wasabi lining). We would definitely come back for more sushi. Gross! As soon as we walked in there was a very strong smell of fish, and if you've ever had good sushi you know that is a bad sign. When we got our food the salad was brown, and so was the avocado from the California rolls. Again gross and certainly not fresh. Later the waitress scolded us because we did not eat everything WOW! The place is not cheap, the food is not fresh, and the service is terrible. For sushi in Downey I would definitely skip Ichiban and go for Kyoto Sushi on paramount and florence. read more
