A year ago I would have given this place four or five stars but the last two times i've visited the service has been horrible. The waitresses are somewhat unpleasent. It seems like they're doing you a favor everytime you ask for something to be done a certain way, alot of back talk and explanations. Just don't sit at a table, they bring everyones food at different times, and wait too long before they bring out the next thing you ordered.... like endless rounds of appetizers. The food is delicious, unfortunately it's inconsistent with the portions. The first time around their excuse was that they were busy which I could understand working at a restaurant myself, but the last time they were so slow just waiting for the lunch rush and the hospitality just wasn't there. I specially like how they added automatic tip to our check for a party of five, when it wasn't even busy. She's lucky we ate so much and our bill was high.... but she only deserved a $5 tip for what she did.... no wet naps, wasabi, ginger, or extra napkins. and our dishware, they just brought it stacked up and placed it in the center for us to grab..... come on, really. it felt like the sizzler. the service is horrible for what you pay, and the food isn't as good as it use to be. and the wasabi is just bad, beyond bad.... how do you mess that up. the owner needs to take back control, i'm sure he notices his clientele has gone down. My best friend and I went to dinner at Ichiban last week and really enjoyed it. It's a small cozy little place with good service. They have a good assortment of rolls and other Japanese food. Ichiban offers your basic needs, food is good, i normally stick to rolls or lunch specials. Love the beer selection (Sapporo, Kirin Ichiban, Hite, Asahi). I recommend this place for a quick lunch time bite to eat. read more

Service and price here is good but the food is inconsistent. The rolls are often crammed with older ingredients such as old fish or brown avocado on a regular basis. The sashimi is a safer bet because they can't hide the freshness (or lack there of) of the fish. read more

So I came on a Wednesday night and had three sushi rolls. They were all tasty but like the rice was old is the best way I can describe it. It didn't hold together and the temperature of it all could've been cooler. It's not like the ichiban in Glendale that I love so much. Would I come back to this one in Downey? The service was excellent. Helped that it was on a Monday night. Tempura & egg rolls were crisp, tasty, and came with nice dipping sauce. Salmon sashimi was fresh as can be, Caterpillar roll was filling, avocadoes were tender, unagi was yummy, spicy salmon was a little too spicy, but i can take the heat.. ha! this place is delicious. i promise. the service is good. it can get a little crazy on friday or saturday nights, but as long as you don't mind flagging down a waitress every once in a while, you should be cool. they're usually playing michael buble or amy winehouse softly on their surround sound system. it's a funny, quirky thing we always laugh about after we get seated. i enjoy looking for the hidden treasure spots, this is definitely one of them. my favorite roll is the B-38, it's a MUST try. the eel is also super yummy. i've really grown as a sushi eater at Ichiban. the waitresses are often very helpful in suggesting new things to try and we haven't been disappointed yet. the sushi is fresh and prepared wonderfully. i've been to my far share of sushi spots, high end to chain, and this is by far my favorite. my boyfriend and i frequent this spot. we've sat here for HOURS ordering plate after plate of sushi and enjoying ice cold Hite's. try a Hite if you haven't yet. it's a really light, really fresh tasting korean beer. there's also a movie theater right across the street, so it's nice for a date night with your buddy or your love. read more

Very affordable food and great atmosphere. Coming to this place on a whim, I was very surprised with the dinning experience we had here. The waiters and hosts were very hospitable and efficient. Blah blah blah! My sister & I were in the mood for sushi, we've past this place for many years & finally decided to try it. What a disappointment! We had a nine month old baby with us so they secluded us . I asked the waitress for a high chair twice because she kept running past us. She wasn't okay with our seating arrangements so we had to move, three times. The food was okay but after being a loyal customer at Sakura in Los Angeles for so long this place just didn't do it for me. This place was terrible. When you pick up the rolls they fall apart. That's a sign of bad craftsmen ship and poor rice preparation. Hands down the best sushi spot we found in the LA area so far. We live in Long Beach, so we like Octopus but we'd say this place has thicker slices of sushi for the price. The only other place we love going to that we'd compare this to is Taiko in Irvine. If ur a big sushi fan, try their DUI roll and their yellow tail belly. My hubby and I's favorite. Super fresh, and nice thick slices! Decent price for exceptional quality! We will definitely be back. Nice, intimate, and lively atmosphere, great sushi chefs, and no complaints about their service. Only complaint I would have is they had the Lady Gaga album on repeat the whole time we were there (LOL) besides that haha, if there was just a little variety in music it would've been perfect!! read more

This is my favorite place in Downey! I haven't tried them all but I like the atmosphere and the food is great! Never disappointed! DUI, Sunset, and Snake are my faves. I checked the grade on the health website too per the tip below and they do in fact have an A as of February 2017. read more

The place was dirty to begin with, we then waited 55 min before we were approached for the first time after ordering to let us know our food was coming .... 10 min later the girl comes again and apologizes ,again,and says our food will be here in 5-10 min!!!!! Really good sushi spot. Probably some of the freshest sushi around and the flavors are amazing. I love salmon, and always get the Alaska and a crunchy roll(crunchy rolls are bomb). I've been staying in Embassy Suites near by and decided to try a local restaurant. It is located just two short blocks from the hotel and I recommend it to everyone. There are actual asian cooks and wait staff that serve (what appears to me) authentic Japanese food. I like this place a lot so I've tried 4 different rolls here. Since I prefer cooked meat and seafood I have to say that my favorite was Spider roll. I just finished eating and putting my review here. I loved the Spider roll. read more
