This spot just opened recently in Burlingame and it's such a fun twist on your typical sushi spot. I've had this place bookmarked for quite some time and finally got to try it! Instead of ordering full rolls, you can build your own sushi box piece by piece -- mixing and matching exactly what you want. Your box is super customizable depending on your cravings. Their menu rotates daily based on what's fresh, so you're always getting high-quality ingredients at their peak. They offer a variety of nigiri, inari, pressed sushi, and specialty rolls! Everything I tried was fresh, tasty, and honestly pretty reasonably priced for the quality. They also have bento boxes and sandos (saving that for next time). Highly recommend checking this spot out if you're in Burlingame -- customizable, filling, and perfect for a quick sushi fix!

I had recently visited a build-your-own sushi box restaurant in Seattle, and was SO excited to see Buri Buri open in Burlingame. My friend and I stopped by for dinner on a Monday evening. The interior was small and casual, with minimal decor and only one real table for seating. They also had a few benches outside, but Buri Buri is definitely intended for takeout. I immediately noticed that the sushi selection was limited. By 6:30 PM, they had run out of many roll and nigiri varieties, so it's probably better to go for lunch. The nigiri was more expensive than I had expected, but the rolls were more reasonably priced. Overall, I really liked the business model of being able to mix and match, and control your own portion size. The quality of the nigiri was generally good. However, the rice was a bit dry from sitting out in the open and kept falling apart into my soy sauce. I had been most excited about the Pressed Tuna Roll, but wasn't crazy about the execution. However, I did enjoy the nigiri and Double Hamachi Roll. Service was quick and friendly!

Pleasantly surprised by Buri Buri - in a good way! My husband and I were in the area for a different matter and I had remembered Buri Buri was popping up frequently on my TikTok so we had to make our way over... not that it was hard to convince him... just say sushi and he'll jump. We arrived about an hour after opening and their display case was pretty full which was great for us to create our own box. For about 10 pieces, we paid $28 and I don't think that's a bad price for the variety we got. The fish tasted fresh, the rice held up together pretty well, free water and tea available, and the seats outside was lovely.

I finally got to check this place off my list!! I've been eyeing it ever since someone posted it on Instagram. We arrived right at opening and I was so overwhelmed with the amount of options. They all look so freaking good. There were 2 size boxes and I went with the bigger size. I felt like a kid at a candy store. That one, that one, that one. So hard to resist. Good variety of inari, nigiris, and sushi rolls. Honestly it was love at first bite. I devoured all of my food. Food was definitely fresh because I went early in the morning. Staff were super friendly and welcoming. Not a lot of seating tho but they do have foldable tables and seats. I can't wait to come back for more!!

More like a 3.5? The shop is rly cute and the service is great. They explained all the sushi to me and introduced some of the hot items that were made fresh. I could smell the sushi rice before i even entered the doors. The raw pieces were really delicious. & Its not just plain fish (which wouldve been fine as well) but buri buri drizzles some sort of sauce on it and its fills your mouth with umami. However, i did not rly like any of the roll pieces. I mean, personally its just tempura or CA roll and that gets boring quick. This place is great for pics obviously, but you pay per piece so it adds up quickly.

Finally got to try Buri Buri after seeing it all over my TikTok and Instagram! I would say the hype is sooo valid, even when we got there we saw so many people eating outside and in line. It moves quick! As someone who likes variety, this concept is perfect for me. I got to try so many flavors and combinations and I really enjoyed most of them. I really wanted to try their pressed sushi, but they were all out. The Japanese name is "oshizushi" and It is pressed through a mold to compress the ingredients together to get the shape to a flat top surface w/ layers. When they compress it in the mold, it is supposed to "infuse" the flavors more. I'll definitely be back as I really enjoyed the freshness and options so I hope I get to try that out next time I felt like the prices for everything were reasonable except for the specialty rolls (one small piece at $2.35). I got full off $22 bucks! Decent for Bay Area standards. The staff was well informed on the ingredients and helpful during checkout. There's very limited seating inside. They have complimentary tea though!

Fun place to pick your own nigiri and sushi into a wooden-like bento box. There are many fish and seafood options but I ended up picking mostly salmon related items. There is iced tea available for self serve and a couple of bar seats indoor if you choose to dine in. A little bit of wait at weekday lunch hour because there is one and only one line.

Came on a Saturday 4:30pm and there was good amount of street parking available. Went inside the restaurant and was disappointed with the lack of variety. We got 10 pieces of sushi which came out to over $30. It felt overpriced but at least the fish was fresh. The concept is great but I don't think I'd come back unless they offer more variety.

Came here at 3:40 pm on a Tuesday, wasn't packed at all, lines flowed fast. PARKING: street parking mostly, some parking lots around the area since this is like a downtown shopping district. SURROUNDING: place is fairly small, only one table and chair to eat at, rest were pretty much benches, nice small space if you want something quick or on the go. FOOD: mixed bento of sushi + rolls, website offers the menu Unagi bento - super good, love the ribboned egg, comes with a few edamame and I loved the fried lotus root. Mango & regular matcha latte - nice umami taste, the mango had such a vibrant taste that complimented the flavor of the matcha well. You do not have to fill the whole box which is unique and helpful if you want specific sushi or rolls, they are super flavorful and fresh.

This place is a great idea in concept, but execution was ehhh. The good: - Unique flavor combinations - Multiple flavors, you don't have to commit to one - You can get as much or as little as you want Ehhh: - The rolls had thin slices of fish and most were filled with imitation crab. I would skip these and only go for the nigiri. The nigiri is more expensive ofc. - For a $50 box, I think I'd prefer the omakase box from another spot or a chirashi bowl.

Good concept but execution needs work. I tried a bunch of pieces (spent $60+) and every piece had way too much rice. The rice was also very compact, mushy, and cold. Several pieces (squid, sea bream) were ridiculously chewy. Not all pieces tasted fresh. This is very much a grab-and-go place. They only have 2 seats inside and 1 small table outside.

An awesome place for superb grab n go sushi!! This is a casual sushi counter where they sell everything one piece at a time. Even rolls like Dragon Rolls are sold by the individual SLICE, not by the entire roll! All rolls and nigiri reside behind a glass-walled counter. Wait in line, and when it's your turn, you just tell them which size take out tray you want, and as you scan what's available, you just tell them which pieces of sushi to load onto your little take out tray. mix and match by the piece! How awesome! Pay when you get to the end of the counter. It's excellent. Fish quality is quite good. I really loved my first visit here (even went back for seconds). I definitely can't wait to be back here! Limited seating alas this is more of a grab 'n go place. Friendly service with happy folks behind the counter. Business is pretty good here.. I got there about 20 minutes before noon, and people were beginning to queue up inside. They were bringing out new sushi every few minutes during lunchtime.

Fast forward, it's Mom's Day, kids having meals on their own as parents, our celebration is to go somewhere good to have a meal, no lines (didn't make a res), kinda spontaneous. Hanabi fits the bill. Ordered the pork belly ramen ( looked really good at a neighboring table) and the Mayu-ramen, spicy, with kfc chicken (not what you think, means something else), both with a miso base. Wait was reasonable, time to get a table was 30 seconds tops. Other nights it's been jammed but not Mom's Day, just quiet, enjoyable. Both meals were spectacularly reasonable, serving what you'd want, with enough of everything to want to dive in because you were pretty assured you were going to be satisfied. Not fru-fru or bougie, ingredients that make the dish memorable yet feel you are knowledgeable and appreciated. Pork belly was soft, fatty yet lean, cooked well enough to be tender, yet with a little chew (not disintegrating like some bellies), lots of noodles al dente so you appreciate the noodle was not a mushy mass in the bowl like some places. The Mayu came with 3 drumsticks burning hot from the fryer but oh so good because it's served in a separate dish so it doesn't get soggy. The spicy is good enough to keep things interesting with losing its identity (unlike a lot of places). And they give plenty of ramen because it's that good. We keep coming back because they serve no-frills, you-can-bank-on-it ramen that is satisfying, consistent; staff is friendly without being overbearing. It's not a big place, tables and a counter, but they know how to keep diners happy and coming back for more. What more can you ask for? Thanks, Hanabi, will definitely be back!

STOP DELETING MY REVIEW. Every word here is my own statement, my own experience at this restaurant…read more I went there for lunch on May 7th, this is what happened. This restaurant has been the one of our family's favorite places until what I experienced today. Because we enjoy the food there, we were putting up with the poor service from one of the waitresses. However, what we went through today was so terrible that I couldn't help but decide to put it into writing. I met up with a friend and came here for lunch. We placed our orders, our food arrived, and we started enjoying it. The waitress's constant hovering around us had started to get on our nerves. She kept clearing things from the table; when she even took our unfinished food without asking, we asked her to bring it back. She reluctantly brought it back and walked away. When we called her back to order drinks this time, she reacted harshly, saying the kitchen was already closed, turned her back, and tried to leave; but when we mentioned drinks, she came back with an unhappy expression and reluctantly took our order. We were really bummed out. We hurriedly finished our meal while sipping our drinks. Suddenly, she snapped at us and grumbled that we had to leave. While we couldn't believe what we were hearing, she was kicking us out. As we paid the bill, she pointed to the camera on the wall and explained how the shop owner had watched her through that camera, ordered her to usher the customer out in time, lock the door, and clear the shop. On previous visits, the same waitress kept urging us to eat quickly and leave even though there was still plenty of time before closing. For that reason, I absolutely refuse to accept her attempt to use closing time as an excuse to cover up her terrible service. Besides, if what she say is true, I won't set foot in a business run by an owner who treats his/her staff with a Gestapo mentality. We were already upset, and she was still going on and on, grinning smugly. My friend couldn't take it anymore and said exactly this: "We are regulars here. You've made it hard for us to enjoy our food. We came here willingly, paid our money, and you kicked us out--that's not funny at all, and yet you're grinning as if nothing happened. This is unacceptable." I added, "I'll never come back" and we left. She closed the door on time. I've run my own restaurant for years and dealt with some tough customers, but I've never treated anyone like that. And I won't tolerate anyone else doing it either. No matter how delicious the food is, it all comes down to how you're treated, welcomed and served. I'm sorry, and I felt the need to share this.
