I came here at the tail end of the Yelp Elite event not knowing whether I would come away with a really favorable impression of these confections. When I first heard of Icicles and the concept of rolled ice cream, I thought it to be just another gimmick, or maybe just a variation of the other establishments that allow you to customize your frozen desserts. I was completely wrong. For me, this was an honestly unique and very enjoyable experience. After checking in smoothly at the front desk, we placed our order. They offer a nice variety of ice cream options and unlimited toppings. If you have a more classic taste, they have things like strawberry, vanilla, and cookies and cream. But if you like some more eclectic or exotic flavors, they have those too, including some curious combinations such as strawberry matcha. After ordering, there can be a bit of a wait depending on how busy the place is, since this isn't just a matter of scooping ice cream into a bowl. It's fun to watch the process unfold, and when the rolls are completed (seven of them, which provides the expected radial symmetry with one central roll surrounded by six others - very satisfying from a geometrical standpoint), then it's on to the toppings. Again, there's a broad variety. The end result is a customized-for-you frozen delight. And it is really delicious. The ice cream is rich in flavor and still creamy in texture, even though it has been subjected to extremely cold temperatures. The amount of ice cream is also deceptively generous. A single serving is easily shared between two people. Service was very friendly and efficient. Being that this Icicles is located in a very very popular Asian plaza filled with restaurants galore, you would think parking can be difficult. Luckily for us, parking was was a breeze and didn't require too much of a walk. As we entered the business it was very obvious that there would be a good wait. The line wrapped around in a snake like manner and just continued to grow. Do be advised that most parties consisted of families [whom were splitting a single order into two cups] so that aspect made the lines look longer than it really was. Menu- This stuff is what dreams are made of!!! At $8.99 a pop, there are currently 19 varieties of this rolled up ice cream to choose from [one being out of season]. There are also 8 non-dairy flavors as well. Toppings are plentiful and unlimited. I first discovered the plentiful new options at this location, from 12-14 flavors to 28? That's double! My friends were ecstatic they added ube! As for me, I'm literally a grown adult-kid at heart in an ice cream shop with my Nutella & Chill. No one gets between me and my Nutella, banana, graham cracker creation! I tried Ferrarii once, not thick enough for me, only had chocolate waffle bits, almonds, and Nutella creating texture. I love those ingredients as toppings, but the banana/graham cracker mix in N&C makes it solid. I have tried Cereal Killer with Cap'n Crunch as the Star; add strawberries, banana slices, of course Nutella, and you've got yourself a carbon copy of Creamistry's Captain's Breakfast. 20 dairy options & 8 lactose intolerant friendly options! One of these days I might actually try the mango sticky rice flavor, which isn't even on my menu photos attached to this review. First timer here? Got to come back for a Yelp event. As always, I'm super impressed with the efficency and arm strength (lol) of the workers. Luckily, it wasn't too crowded when I went and I wasn't in a rush, but when it gets busy, especially during the summer, you'll need to expect a wait since they make your dish in front of you (and the line can extend out the door... literally). Unlimited toppings are included in your order, so while waiting I'd look through their extensive list. If you've never tried mochi balls before, I'd certainly recommend that for any flavor! Previously got the matcha berry which had a good green tea flavor, and this time I got the strawberry fantasy (strawberries, Graham crackers inside for texture, condensed milk). I was lucky enough as a Yelp Elite to try this new location for free. I have had rolled ice cream previously but this was my first experience with an ICICLES location. This Cupertino location is new but it did not disappoint. I am dairy free and usually that is a challenge when you want ice cream. Luckily they have quite an extensive non-dairy menu. I went with the pina colada which is coconut and pineapple. They basically take the liquid ice cream base and mix in whatever mix-ins you have and freeze it on this big flat, cold table. The table slowing freezes the ice cream. The staff spreads it out into a big rectangle then rolls up pieces of the rectangle into 6 or 7 rolls. They then put the rolls standing up in a cup and add whatever toppings you want. The pina colada was quite tasty. Good mix of pineapple and coconut. I really like the unlimited toppings so I had strawberries, colored sprinkles, and crushed almonds. They also had toasted coconut in a self-service container (with some other options) so I added that too. It does take awhile to get your order as they do each one once you order. So expect a bit a wait when the place is busy. The staff was friendly and helpful and explained their non-dairy stuff to me. I was greeted immediately when I walked through the door, and the worker even changed her gloves for me because of my fresh fruit allergy (thank you so much!). I came here for the Yelp Elite Event. I was the first customer in the place, which is very spacious and clean but has no indoor seating. They opened a little after 12pm and I had to wait a little more for the machine to warm up. The worker behind the counter was super patient and had great recommendations. I chose the Strawberry Fantasy without condensed milk and topped it with bananas. Watching her make my ice cream was really fun! It's shockingly labor-intensive, and it's amazing to watch some uninspiring-looking ingredients (strawberries in syrup, plain white cream, graham crackers) get mixed into a beautiful treat. She even placed the banana slices carefully. To be honest, strawberries and cream is not one of my favorite flavors so I had some trepidation, but the ice cream exceeded my expectations! Woo woo, rolled ice cream train! I've been to the Willow Glen location and it's always so busy with a line out the door. I was relieved to find no line at the Cupertino location. It's located in the plaza. Despite no line, the staff were all high energy. They make sure to spell your name right on your cup (unlike some places), and they care that your experience here is enjoyable. They have a board with their menu and you can opt out on anything if you want. They call your name and then they make it right in front of you. Feel free to take photos, snapchats, videos, live story... whatever your heart desires. I chose the strawberry fantasy because it tastes like strawberry cheesecake. You get unlimited toppings with your ice cream so go big! I top mine with cheesecake bites and a toasted marshmallow (and they gave me two of them!). Seriously, rolled ice cream looks like it wouldn't have a melt in your mouth texture, but it really does. Yes, the price is up there at almost $8.00 per. I agree it's a little pricey, but understand that you are paying for the show. Simultaneously, the portion size is pretty hefty, especially if you go heavy on the toppings. I'm so glad we have this place in the area. This definitely reached my expectations. From start to scratch, the process on how they make their ice cream is entertaining and unique. I'm assuming this process was first used in Thailand? Milk and toppings are poured on top of this icy-cold frozen "stove". As the ingredients touch the top, it becomes frozen and molded together with two ice cream scraper utensils. The person then spreads the ice cream across the pan into this giant rectangle shape. Finally, he/she scrapes forward while the ice cream makes this small tube roll. The person then picks each roll and lines them up in a cup, then finished with desired toppings of your choice. The result is a great one. The texture is much thicker and pasty than regular ice cream or even gelato. It doesn't melt as fast. I ordered their popular Nutella, graham cracker and banana flavor ice cream. I think it took about 10-12 mins to prepare and finish which isn't bad because you're watching it being made anyway. Once in a while, I wouldn't mind treating myself to an Icicles. I like how everything about this one is the same as the Willow Glen location. However, the rolls I've noticed are a lot smaller than the Willow Glen one--or maybe the sizes just changed. Now you no longer have to wait 30 minutes to get your sweet treat! They're open until 11PM, which is great for those summer nights coming up. Everyone seems to love Icicles from grown adults to the littlest of kids. The ordering is done at the cashier, just pick your base from the seasonal menu or the regular standard menu. The roller makes your ice cream masterpiece, and the toppers let you choose all the toppings you want for no extra charge. Their mochi is delicious, and so are the chocolate waffles. Try those guys! Don't be afraid of long lines, they move very fast. The toppings you can self serve at the end of the space are just m&m's and things like graham cracker dust--nothing special. Cereal Killer is custard with either Captain Crunch, Cinnamon Toast Crunch or Fruity Pebbles mixed in. Bae-Sic is, well, basic -- a nice tasting custard. They are all tasty but it's hard for me to pass up Wake Me Up which has caffeine in it. You can choose unlimited free toppings including fruit, dessert toppings, cookies and candy. Be careful about putting too many as it detracts from the ice cream experience. $7.50 seems like a lot to pay for ice cream but the portions are large enough for two people.
