I recently went to L.A for a week to visit my family/work, but what I really went for was to go ring shopping since it's the only time I can shop in peace and not worry about my gf finding this out. I started doing some research on the jewelry district in downtown L.A and read a few articles/suggestions on some good shops to check out. So I made of list of possible stops for myself before I arrived. When the day came during the week, I was in the jewelry district at 10am. Right when many of the shops open. I started in the building that 'Icing on the Ring' is located in but they were my second/third stop in it. I stepped into IOTR and Rafi welcomed me. From the get go he was genuinely friendly, honest and curious to my needs and not pushy at all. I showed him some notes I had jotted down and then he began to show me some possible options that were within my budget. After seeing a couple options, I particularly fell in love with one ring that I knew my gf would love. But since I hadn't explored much more of the jewelry district yet, I told Rafi I had interest in one of his rings and that I just wanted to look around a little more before deciding. Rafi didn't make any kind offer or some kind of last minute 'special' to try to keep me from leaving his store. On the contrary, Rafi said to go take my time and not rush it, look around and to come back if I wanted. I was almost shocked by that. So I left, went to one store, looked around and nothing compared to the ring that was glowing in my mind. I walked straight back to Icing on the Ring and let Rafi know I wanted to purchase the ring. I was on a bit of a time crunch since I had to leave to work but I went back the next day to finalize my purchase. When I arrived the next day, Rafi wasn't there yet, but his sister Ani was. So she called her brother and got his notes about my ring choice and continued right where I had left off the previous day. Ani was just as friendly, warm and informative as her brother. She helped me finalize my ring specs and then her father adjusted the sizing on the ring himself once I was set with my decision. I think the fact that this a family business, makes this place an easy option to buy a ring. They were all so really helpful and honest that made this experience extremely smooth and easy. I'll give and intro, pros, cons, and a conclusion (skip to this to make it quick). INTRO I was not your average engagement ring shopper. I made 3 or 4 outings to the Jewelry District over 5 months (stopping by IOTR for most trips), and while I was pretty ignorant the first time out, I was frequently confused with a jeweler or diamond broker by the last time - mostly because of the book How to Buy a Diamond, by Fred Cueller. Quick plug: Men, get that book - it's free if you call Diamond Cutters International and ask for a free copy; just take it with a grain of salt, because at the end of the day they want you to go to THEM for the diamonds. Don't be satisfied with the 5 websites you checked out and the 2 jewelers you talk to, or you're gonna get ripped off - really, if there's one thing I learned, it's the even the best (like Icing on the Ring - IOTR) will sell you something for 50% more than you could bargain them down too if you knew what the heck you were doing. So read up gents. I ended up being twice as educated as the average guy about to propose, so this gives my review a different perspective of IOTR than most of these other posts have. Why? Because comparatively, I was a pain in the butt - I asked strange questions, and a lot of them (Can I see a sarin/megascope report; is this a class I or II cut; do you have a gem lab; how large is your inventory?) and at first I barely knew what I was asking. When I had figured things out, I bargained a lot - not one or two rounds either, but back and forth for awhile. Let me stress that I wasn't "a jerk" about any of this either. I asked a lot, even demanded - but always courteously and patiently. Promise . And though this review may come off as arrogant to you, I tried and succeeded in not coming off that may to them (they were the experts, still). I checked out a lot of stores, especially downtown. I feel like I can do a pretty valid job comparing. How does Icing in the Ring Deal with a people who are a bit harder to work with? How do they deal with the guys who are harder to make money off of? PROS - Knowledgable staff; they answered all those hard questions! - Confident in their products - Relatively good at explaining new concepts - Custom orders don't scare them CONS - Their confidence can come off as arrogance, especially the twins' - Not as good at making customers like me feel as valued as other places did - They have enough business coming in that they won't let you drive their price down as much as other places (once you acquire true skills at this) - Again, they just don't want the sale badly enough sometimes - other places will work harder to get your business - At the end of the day, higher prices CONCLUSION The staff was nice, but might be less nice the more knowledgable/inquisitive you are. The prices were low, but others can be driven down further. They want your business and will work hard for it, but not as much as other places (like Balian & Sons). I liked IOTR, and they were useful - but in the end their primary use was in setting high standards that only the best of the best could beat. And to for me, I didn't have to look too far (even though I visited at least 10 other places and spent just as much time their, and talked with people all over the country by phone and web): I ended up right next door at BALIAN AND SONS. The BALIAN AND SONS place next door saved me a lot of money, answered my pain in the butt questions, put up with my bargaining, custom make my band to my design (but gave useful tips), communicated throughout (well, they could have done better on that), and imported a diamond that I hand-picked from literally across the country. No, I don't work for them. No, they didn't ask me to plug them in this. SUMMARY SO IF YOU GO TO IOTR, LET THEM GIVE YOU THEIR BEST PRICE, BUT DON'T BUY BEFORE AT LEAST WALKING NEXT DOOR TO BALIAN AND SONS - THEY CAN MAKE THE SAME THING, PROBABLY FOR A LOWER PRICE. And that's how it went for me. Good job IOTR: I'd give you a 3.75 if I could. PS: it's all about the center diamond - please don't let anyone fool you on that. And go for quality over size if your lady hasn't said otherwise. And clean that thing DAILY when you get it!' Get that book! read more

The store is very nice, clean, and classy (a selection of scotch, vodka, and even Grand Marnier is available to celebrate your purchase) - this place is definitely a different feel from the other downtown jewelry district shops which can be quite seedy. This inspired confidence at least for me (a novice jewelry buyer) and made me confident in my purchase. Ara was great and helped me find a ring to fit my unique specifications. After showing me several loose stones on my initial visit, he helped me prioritize what aspects were most important to me. He called me just two days later saying he found a stone that he thought matched my specifications. He was absolutely right - my purchase for the engagement ring to my fiance was a done deal. I also feel that their pricing is reasonable when comparing products of similar quality to competitors. Also, the lifetime guarantee they provide is a nice added bonus. The business is family owned and operated. When picking up my engagement ring, the owner came out to speak with me while I waited for service. What an authentic person and wealth of knowledge. I was very nervous making one of the largest purchases of my life and after speaking with him, I was completely at ease. This family-owned business has some very nice smiling faces greeting you at their store. But I have to say, when we purchased our ring and the day came to finally pick-it-up...the ring had not been properly smoothed down by the factory. Recently went here after reading all of the good reviews. I purchased an engagement ring here after visiting a few other stores in the Diamond District, including Inta Gems. I ended up going with IOTR only because of their selection. They are a little more expensive compared to the other jewelers in DTLA but they have a modern showroom and I felt a little more comfortable with their craftsmanship as some of the other places seemed a little sketchy. On a side note, some of the other Yelpers are correct, the customer service here is hit or miss. One day Raffi is your best friend, the next day he has no clue who you are. We couldn't be more pleased with the service, selection, and experience. What's more, we will certainly be coming back. IOTR's vast selection is wedding rings and engagement bands. They can custom make anything you want. They are a family owned business with high customer service being such a differentiator. I would also say prices are competitive. No high sales pressure tactics made this a comfortable place for my husband and I to make a decision to buy our five year anniversary wedding diamond ring that was custom made. We visited Eli's and two other stores before meeting Salpie, who taught us how to use a loop. I already had an idea of what style ring I wanted, but I wanted a larger ring than the showroom model. Salpie then told me IOTR could custom make a larger ring! (We hadn't known they custom made different carat weights.) We fortunately came during their wedding spring sale so we qualified for a wedding promotion. Salpie was a pleasure to work with. When we went to pick up the ring, I decided to look at diamond stud earrings and met Vic. We told Vic ahead of time, who prepared studs for us in sizes 2 to 2.25 carats. He stuck to our budget and showed us regular and Yehuda, which are clarity enhanced. I had read misinformation on clarity enhanced, but Vic clarified what the process and it allayed my concerns. I tried the studs on and afterwards, given the price and weight and Icing on the Ring trade in policy, I decided that the Yehuda clarity enhanced diamond stud earrings were my personal choice for me. Vic was an excellent manager throughout the entire experience, explaining the Yehuda clarity enhanced diamond process to me, how to take care of the diamond, what is the trade in policy, warranty policy, etc. The diamond stud earring were set in a martini style prong earring, something I wasn't familiar with, but both my husband and Vic liked. Vic mentioned that he would be happy to swap them out to a basket style at a later date! Now that is customer service to me. I was thrilled with the entire shopping experience. Vic was great! Here are some tips: 1) do some basic education on diamond before going in there. Basic four color, clarity, cut, carat. Go on YouTube or google. Of course, icing on the ring can teach this information to you, but it's just good to have some of this information learned before. 2) don't be shy. Set up an appointment. Icing on the Ring is busy. Especially on Saturdays. We set up an appointment at 10am. By the time we left, it was crowded. Why did I give Icing on the Ring five stars? The fact is, I did a lot of research. I like that they have a warranty and trade in policy. I like that this company has been around for generations. Were they competitive prices? Yes Did I receive excellent customer service? Yes.
