Chili Cheese Fríes and Chili Dogs

Love hot dogs. These are pretty good. Basic food done well. Severs expect you to know what you want. I get it. A smile goes a long way. Chili Mac is out of this world and very old school.

Even though traffic on the Alexis Road corridor is DOWN 30%, Ideal Hotdog's business is actually UP 30% over last summer, according the owner. Why is business up? I figure it must be because the chili is so damned good. But then again, this is not a change. The chili has always been awesome. CHILI: You can get the chili "spicy," (which is actually not that hot; after all, this is not Texas style chili), or you can get it mild. You can get the chili on a hotdog, with mustard and onions (add shredded cheese, if you desire). OR, obviously, you can get it in a bowl or cup. OR, you can get it over fries. OR you can even get it over spaghetti. I'm told that those in the know call this odd chili/spaghetti mixture "chili mac." CHILI MAC: I've said it before and I'll say it now...This is the best Chili Mac in the Glass City, and, it's some of the best I've ever tasted, period. I usually get mine "four way," which is chili, noodles, shredded cheese on top, and onions. If you like beans in your chili, order it "five way." (You can also skip the onions, but add beans...this is also known as "four way." Hate veggies and/or legumes? Order it "three way" to get only spaghetti, chili and cheese. ATMOSPHERE: Let's move on to the next category. HOTDOGS: Excellent chili dogs. BUT, here's a word of warning for Coney Island aficionados/snobs: These chili dogs are not true coneys. The hotdogs do not have casings, and the chili is not creamy. Personally, I prefer Ideal's. SERVICE: Always good. And, if George, the owner, is not behind the counter, he's out in the dining room making sure that his customers are getting what they want. COST: This place is very, very, very inexpensive. This place ranks up there with the Brownstone Tavern as a North Toledo institution. Although business is up over last summer, it's still only "fair." George is a really good guy, so c'mon in and show him some love!

Staff was amazing, super friendly. I got the coney dogs and I've had better in Toledo. But they were still good, just not great.

Great chili Mac served hot or mild. Their chili dogs are also great. They definitely compete with the other hot dog places around town.

I had tried to make a reservation for a party of two, but was told they only take reservations for larger groups. I was advised to arrive between 5pm-5:30pm on a Saturday evening to avoid a wait. We arrived at 5:30pm and were promptly seated. The ambiance here is very casual and comfortable. Our server promptly came by to take our drink orders and give us menus. We were also provided with complimentary biscuits that were very good, though not as warm as we would have liked. I ordered the honey-BBQ salmon with green beans and mac 'n cheese. My friend ordered a burger. Food was served in an appropriate amount of time. My salmon was perfectly grilled and seasoned. The green beans were plentiful and deliciously fresh. The macaroni and cheese was a bit disappointing but not bad. It came in a small container and all I could see initially was a cream sauce; once I put my fork in, I discovered the macaroni. We had a nice evening and service was casually excellent- which is the vibe of the restaurant. I would definitely return and recommend Shorty's True American Roadhouse!

My dog's groomer is right across the street or else I would have missed out. I walked in and ordered at the register. The menu is written on a chalkboard. I was hoping for a spinach omelette but they were out of spinach (same as last time I was there). Instead I opted for a veggie omelette with cheese. I also ordered a coffee. The way their system works is that you place your order and pay; then you're seated and your beverage/food is brought to your table. I sat in a booth and my coffee was very promptly brought out to me. The ambiance is absolutely adorable with red and white tablecloths and balloons. There is also an ice cream counter. It was a very pleasant setting in which to enjoy my coffee. Within a reasonable amount of time, my omelette was served with a side of toast. The omelette was huge and filled with lots of tasty tomatoes, onions and green peppers, all finely chopped and perfectly seasoned. Hash browns were also tucked inside the omelette. Although the cheese had been forgotten, I didn't miss it too much because the omelette itself was so delicious. The toast was served with delicious homemade strawberry jam. I could only eat half of the omelette and was given a box to take it home. My server was a very sweet young girl who kept checking to see if I needed anymore coffee and if everything tasted good. At a nearby table, a woman spilled her glass of water and people from the kitchen immediately came out to clean it up. They were extremely good spirited and reassured the embarrassed woman that it happened all the time and was no problem. The atmosphere felt very warm and welcoming. I would absolutely recommend Grace's Kitchen in Point Place as a charming spot for breakfast or lunch. It's on Summit Street across from Aunt Linda's Pet Grooming and H&R Block. Check out the picture of my omelette and the inside of Graces Kitchen. (For some reason they appear below my prior review.) While other reviews note that this is a cash-only establishment, I used a credit card both times I was there, though I left a cash tip on the table this time.

3.25 I've dined at this restaurant many times over the years…read more- the last time was over a year ago. I still find the retro historic ambiance charming- with its over-the-top velvet wallpaper, ornate chandeliers, and white tablecloths on each table. I don't believe any decor changes have been made over the decades. It's part of the restaurant's signature charm and I love it. It was a rather hot and humid day in Michigan and I immediately noticed that the AC wasn't keeping up with the heat. Still, it wasn't overly uncomfortable. Even with a 6pm reservation, the restaurant was very crowded, so I attributed the heat to the crowd and some of the sizzling plates, in addition to lack of adequate AC. . Our server greeted us promptly and told us about the specials of the night. She took our drink orders and came back to take our food orders. My friend ordered filet mignon with a baked potato, with a beef vegetable soup. I ordered the Halibut Special, broiled in butter with shiitake mushrooms and a baked potato plus a side of steamed asparagus to share. While awaiting our orders, we were served exactly two pieces of bread ("dirty bread"?!) and a basket of bread or pretzel sticks. The bread wasn't even warm and I didn't eat it further after one bite. That was okay because I was saving myself for the entree'. When our entrees arrived, they looked appetizing. Upon taking a bite of my Halibut, however,I was underwhelmed. It wasn't horrible in any way but didn't impress me as anything amazing or crave-worthy. The asparagus, imo, should have had the stalks cut down further to cut off the yellow parts of the bottoms. It was a decent sized portion though. My friend's filet mignon was "good" according to her, though no further enthusiasm. It was a pleasant enough dinner though it was rather loud and difficult to converse at times. Our server was polite, pleasant and efficient. Upon being served the check, (I was treating for my friend's birthday), I glanced at it but didn't study it. Later, I was surprised to see a petty surcharge of .50 each for sour cream for the two baked potatoes that were included in the entrees. There was also an upcharge I didn't recognize for some type of cheese? I just don't like being nickled and dimed, so it irritated me. I left the restaurant thinking that I wouldn't hurry back and that I would order a pasta dish. However, it's definitely worth checking out for the experience if you haven't tried this spot. It's very close to Toledo and there's plenty of free parking. Check out pics below!
