When you walk into Sam & Charlie's White Hut Diner you might just feel like you walked back in time. I'm not sure, but I think the decor hasn't changed at all since the 70s. The carpeting remains the same, and sometimes, you can smell the 70s. Hmm. However, if you're here for the food , you're in luck. I will say that although this is more of a breakfast spot, I like the lunch items better. I love the Super King double burger, the 4 oz Ribeye sandwich, and the fries. I haven't tried the beef Wellington...yet. All the omelettes, and pretty much all the waffles are pretty much about average. Ask Brandon what a "Malted Waffle" is. Some of the other waffle options are cool sounding (cored out waffles with scrambled eggs imbedded, meat cooked into the waffles), but I haven't tried any yet. We came here for our weekly Saturday diner breakfast and was so enchanted by this place! They had authentic decor from th 60's along with some of the coolest chandeliers I've ever seen. This place looks like a throwback diner from the 1960's. We seated ourselves immediately. We were also served immediately. My husband got the banana nut waffle and meat lovers omelette. He loved them, but the Banana nut waffle was AMAZING. I had a raspberry waffle with raspberry syrup. SO GOOD. I expected the raspberry syrup to taste artificial. It did not. It tasted like fresh raspberries. I don't understand but I am happy! I had the hash browns O'Brien and they were also delicious! The service was fast and friendly. Stopped in for breakfast. Over easy eggs, sausage patties, crispy hashbrowns, rye toast and coffee... OK, the eggs were perfect. The sausage was crispy on the edges, not dried out or underdone - really nice. The potatoes were not crispy and had a strange flavor. Not sure why, but nobody cook's hashbrowns crispy. NOBODY... The coffee was typical, weak diner coffee. My cup went dry and it took forever to get a refill. There was 1 waitress and probably 5 tables, but coffee isn't cheap so I do try to get 2 - 3 cups in. Didn't happen this time. Also, there was a guy playing games on his phone with the volume turned up. It's nice he had to share his enthusiasm for the game with the rest of us... Rainy cold day so I ordered thru grub hub for delivery. Everyone talks about the flavored waffles. Ordered peach waffles peach pancakes sausage patties ham and home fries. All arrived cold. Oh well. The peach waffles was what tasted like an eggo waffle with cold canned peaches in a container. My peach pancake was the same except they actually put the cold peaches on top the pancake n folded the pancake n half. The ham and home fries were decent but the sausage was flavorless. As soon as we showed up it looked like exactly what we wanted, a pancake house. Once we got inside it looked very homily, they had customers they knew by 1st name and not just a couple of them, alot of them so we knew its gonna be good if you got customers that come quite often. Once we sat down we ordered coffee and I have to say that coffee is coffee unless you home brew it yourself so I couldn't say anything bad about coffee. So I ordered the Biscuits & Gravy, Aunt Jemima Original Pancakes (3) & Hash Browns. When the food got here it looked really good and then when i ate it, it was way more then good, the biscuits & Gravy was amazing and they give you quite a bit of gravy so you make sure that you have gravy even after your biscuits are gone, now onto the hash Browns, I like my hash Browns crispy and I have to say they made them just crispy enough to where I like them, it was perfect. Now let's get to the pancakes, they were perfect and fluffy and the butter wasn't original butter, the butter was creamy and perfe try melted on the pancakes and the syrup drizzled nicely all over the pancakes. All the food was amazing but on another point, customer service there is excellent. These people had it put together greatly and they didn't even give me weird looks cause I'm a Michigander lol. I'm not a big fan of the state of Ohio ( GO LIONS, TIGERS, PISTONS & RED WINGS AND ESPECIALLY.... GO BLUE!!!!) I had the cheeseburger omelete with half of chocolate waffle with chocolate sauce & O'Brien potato's. Bf got the Vegi omelet. We thought we would share half and half. So my friend David checked in at Sam & Charlie's on Facebook yesterday and made a serious claim that this is the best place in the city of Toledo to get breakfast. Now that's a bold statement and something I felt required a bit of supporting research on my end. I marked my calendar and let the wife know we'd be heading over to S&C's for Sunday brunch. They keep limited hours and are open seven days a week for breakfast and lunch. The interior is a wonderful time capsule with homemade signage covering every square inch of the dark fake wood panels. I've been trying to eat healthy and my go-to breakfast these days when I eat out is a veggie omelette. Each diner does it differently, and in the case of Sam & Charlie's they aren't fooling around. 4 eggs cooked perfectly and overflowing with veggies. I asked for extra mushrooms and boy of boy did I ever get extra mushrooms. I liked that I had the option to add provolone as most diners don't get passed American cheese. As for the hash browns? I ordered them extra crispy and "o-brienized" which adds sauteed onions and green peppers. These were easily some of the best breakfast potatoes I've ever had. Just perfectly cooked, crispy and just a perfect amount of buttery flavor. A+ Waffles being the focus of this friendly joint, we of course had to try some. I love that you can order a quarter waffle and think next time I visit I'll try a few different flavors. I tried the lemon poppy variety which is served with a fresh piece of lemon. I slathered the whipped margarine on top, squirted the lemon all over and smashed it into my face. Delightful! My wife really enjoyed her cheeseburger. Her claim is it's almost as good as the classic (now long gone) Gus's Yum Yum "hamburg" that we used to enjoy in North Toledo. That's a pretty big claim as Gus's without a doubt served the best griddled burger in Toledo. The service was super friendly and we ended up bumping into some friends while we were there. Now let me start by saying, we didn't order the flavored waffles--- we didn't walk in to taste that rainbow. But my goodness, they were everywhere. Waffles on the menu. Waffles on the walls. I hail from Rockford, IL.. so it just felt like home to me. ‍ We each ordered the meat omelet: 3 kinds of meat (sausage, bacon?, and some other part of the hog I can't quite remember) and American cheese. *My lady tried adding broccoli to the mix, but we were informed they don't got that there (bold call for a diner, but I respect it). She added mushrooms and that did the trick just fine. The omelets were large enough to fill us and cheezy enough to feed us. At $7 each, it was money well spent. Oh, and one last thing before we get back on that old dusty trail. My woman ordered a "lemonade" with her meal and when that thing came, it looked like some kind of mountain dew and tasted like something much weirder.. Going to be honest, I've driven past this place about 50 times and thought it wasn't open anymore. The throw back appearance made me believe it had closed years ago. Then today, we drove by and saw the flicker of an open sign. We stopped in and are SO happy we did!! What an amazing breakfast and fantastic value. I got the chocolate chip waffle with both maple and chocolate syrup, she got the house breakfast (eggs, hash brown, sausage, toast.) we were both so impressed with the portion size and the flavor! I had Sunday brunch here with my parents yesterday. Before we went in, my Dad says "you probably won't get an Instagram worthy picture here, but the food is good." Lol! My Dad says he comes here pretty often. When I ask how long it's been here, he says since he was a teenager. Wow! Super throwback! Can't believe I've never reviewed this Toledo gem before!! Sam & Charlie's is a treasure, and I'm certain one of very few White Hut's left standing. What's more, it's Toledo's only - and maybe the world's only - psychedelic Waffle House! The decor inside is truly something to behold, big multi-colored waffle chandeliers, combinable dinning booths that'll make Big Boy green with envy, and a wonderfully happy staff. The breakfast options range from straight ahead to surreal. You can get a range of waffles that are cored with eggs and meat in the middle, you can get bacon pressed right into the waffle, or have them infused with any flavor you like from a wide array. You can even just get a quarter waffle as a side! They are also one of the few places in town that offers Canadian Bacon on the regular. Win! My go to is the Super King, the granddaddy of the classic American diner double burger that spawned the Big Boy, the Big Mac, etc. Two simple beef patties on a sesame bun with lettuce and "secret sauce" (basically tartar). The kicker is the square piece of white bread with the crust cut off separating the burgers! Look for the old school Super King sign on the wall, it's hard not to fall in love. Oh, they also serve the biggest mugs of sofa I've pretty much ever seen anywhere. And the grilled cheese comes with three halves instead of one sandwich. Why? Who knows, but I love it.
