Idli Dosa is located in a strip mall off the main road. The room is large and the A/C was turned up a little higher than I would have liked. I was glad I wore a sweatshirt. They serve authentic Indian cuisine with a South Indian tilt. We started with onion pakora, mirch (chili) bhaji and manchurian gobi (cauliflower). We then had different dosas, poori (a deep fried puffed bread) with a potato masala, a vegetable biryani and a goat curry with accompanying rice. Desert was a very sweet (as expected) gulab jamun and a chocolate samosa, which tasted good, though the chocolate filling was more solid than runny. Two of our party had mango lassis to drink which they liked very much. Service was attentive and the food came out relatively quickly. The portions were large and the flavorings were as authentic as anything i have had in the sub-continent. They do ask you what level of spiciness (heat) you would like. Everything was very good, though the poori was perhaps slightly more oily than i would have preferred. We will definitely be back. read more

I've had takeaway twice and found it very good, but a recent dine-in experience on a Friday was disappointing. The food was mediocre, Tandoor chicken dry and somewhat bland. The restaurant lacks ambience and comfort, and the service from a female staff member was indifferent and inpersonal: a smile and some courtesy would be nice. Finally, the lack of alcoholic beverage choices (you can't even get a beer) seems ridiculous. Not recommended for dining in. read more

I don't want to be misunderstood when I talk about having a wide range of experiences eating Indian food. However, I feel that it's important to put my review in the proper perspective of someone who has eaten Indian food in a LOT places in North America and in London as well. I LOVE the Dosa at Idli Dosa! The Southern Indian spices are wonderful. The Palak paneer (fried paneer for better flavor and texture) is fantastic. A cool take on gulab jamun which includes a creme brûlée is wonderful and delicate. The Halwa is so awesome with dried fruit in addition to the cardamon and carrots that you'll NEED to share it with a friend. No misses, all hits with this place. The chef came out to explain the fried paneer to us as we had usually had only the raw experience. These guys are the real deal and we are SO happy that they chose to come to Midland, MI! read more

This is a wonderful restaurant. We lived in India for five years and consider it our second home. When Idli Dosa opened here we were thrilled and they do not disappoint. Really cramped and I had to sit about two feet from the bathroom doors which was... disconcerting. Food was amazing and traditional so that was a great part, but the atmosphere needs help. read more

Idli dosa is an authentic indian restaurant with a prominent south indian flavor, which is refreshing. The ambiance was good, service was pleasant and quick. Their menu has a great variety, more than most indian restaurants. The food is awesome, with authentic spices and very flavorful. They also serve Malabar/Kerala paratha which is very rare to find in any restaurant in the country. The Andhra lamb was excellent with great masala. Batoora was soft and puffy. Their indo-chinese is also worth mentioning. We've been here several times, and will not hesitate to recommend this restaurant. read more

Wow this place is good they offer different levels of spice, so there's food for anyone's level of spice tolerance. I had never had Indian food prior to this year but I'm so happy that I tried it. Haven't had a bad menu item yet. The curries are delicious. So is the garlic naan. read more

Horrible experience... we got in first waiter was really nice ordered our food and appetizer and drink.. our food took a while to come and come before the appetizer... no big deal. I ordered goat palak friend ordered goat curry the other ordered lamb in some sauce... my order was just bones in sauce while my friend had plenty of meet in hers.. I tried to eat it but there was hardly any meat on the bones... I asked if they could change it so my plate was taken back to the kitchen only to be brought back and the manager coming along and telling us that what we ordered comes with bones... I ask him why my friends has meat and mine just bones he replied "the goats are different" and something like goat is eaten in Australia... and feeling satisfied he left doing nothing... I refused to eat and opted to just wait for my friends to finish eating... Mean while second waiter was super nice as well she tried everything to make it work so my friend ordered a drink that comes with avocado and vanilla somewhat a shake... it's brought out and has a sip and asks where the avocado is... we where explained to thst they ran out of avocado and just ( I feel like this should have first been communicated with us before the drink was ever made and her sipping it first to be the one to ask) Ten min later manger comes to me and ssus he will make me new lamb palak I say I don't want it and he can take the ones with bones his response... "NO NO KEEP IT AND WILL MAKE YOU A FRESH ONE" He looked mad so unprofessional and he left my replacement come about 8 min later and what a shocker it had meat and few bones.. let me be clear we eat got where I am from so this was not right.. I made an order of chicken tikka to go and asked them to give it to me when leaving SMH.. I will post a pic what a rip off for 11.99 comes with no rice or anything just five or so pieces of tinny boneless chicken with onion and a nan bread I ordered on the side... at this point my appetite was gone it was closing time for them I took my second plate of palak and took it to go and had the first plate taken to the kitchen IT WAS HORRIBLE THE MANAGER HANDLED IT POOR... We went based on the reviews tonight. The food was indeed great. The place was very crowded, noisy, and the service was chaotic and not up to par. We watched the wait staff staff, very confused and disorganized. Clearly, they need to figure out systems. The couple next to use left after 1 hour without getting their food. Our appetizer came out 30 seconds before the meal. The waitress had trouble communicating and could not really describe any of the dishes. Water was all we were offered to drink at any point during the visit. It took us well over 45-50 minutes to get our food from when we ordered it. There were no traditional Indian condiments visible (chutney, sauces, etc) and none were offered although I did get yogurt sauce with served with my lamb briani . We went there for the first time as we were in Midland for a day trip. Food and options were not good. Very few vegetarian options. Every restaurant usually has Lentils in buffet, but they did not even have that. The sambar was bad and the salad was like 2 days old. The sweet dish was the worst. Such a welcome addition to the Midland area food scene! Indian restaurants are NOT all the same -- different places offer food from some of the many different regions of India, so all are worth a try but don't expect cookie-cutter food like you get at a chain! We love Idli Dosa and it is one of our regular eateries -- so many choices, very attentive service. This is not fast food -- relax and enjoy. I could make a whole meal out of the Vegetable Samosas and Naan, but the rest of my family can't settle for a simple meal, they insist on trying several dishes on each visit, and we eat until we groan. Nice little hole in the wall place with hands down the best Indian food in the area. 5 stars by midland standards, 3.5-4 stars compared to other great Indian restaurants around the country. Extremely happy with this addition to central MI dining. We tried it as take-out this past weekend and loved it! I'm a fan of spicy, so went with the lamb vindaloo, which was hot, but not ridiculously so. We also got a wonderfully smokey baingan bartha, a flavorful palak paneer, an order of butter chicken, samosas, garlic nan, and mixed vegetable pakora--everything was delicious! We would like to try their pancake/crepe specialities, but were concerned they wouldn't travel well, so are saving those for when we can eat in house. Recommended! read more

Went on opening weekend - the food was great! Like any new restaurant, they have some kinks to work out. Servers were still learning the ropes, and the owners need to put up something to absorb some of the noise. But, no stars removed since they are so new. read more
