I came in at noon and there were no other dine-in patrons. Just Door-dashers. Eventually two other couples came in to eat. The door sign still says Lunch Buffet 9.99, but there's no buffet offered and all the lunches cost $12 or more! They come with soup or salad, none being particularly Indian (plain tomato or plain chicken soups, the waiter didn't seem familiar with how they tasted). My Chicken Korma arrived pretty quickly along with black lentil Dal (not much flavor), rice and a basket of naan. I'd asked for medium spicy but the entree was totally mild. Given that this is an Indian restaurant in Saginaw, Mi, a not so Indian town, I was overall impressed. Atmosphere: I've come here twice and both times I'm impressed with the service. For starters, it is located inside of a not so nice strip mall. However, when I walked inside I was pleasantly surprised at how nice the restaurant is. The servers are very attentive and constantly checking on you. There is Indian music playing in the background, adding to the experience. Food: Quite honestly, it's not "great Indian food". However, it is definitely better than what you'd expect and it fills the void when you're craving Indian food. The Chicken Tikka Masala is flavored very well. Even if you get "spicy", it won't be spicy, but it's still good with a perfect consistency. The Chicken Vindaloo was better in my opinion, although it is still not spicy and it is traditionally a spicy dish. The Samosas need a LOT MORE seasoning, they were very bland. Beware, the Garlic Naan is legit "garlic on top of naan" so unless that's your preference, stick with regular naan. Noticed giant sign on windows indicating time and pricing for their buffet options, along with it listed on menus. Waited till they opened and walked in, took a minute for some guy to come out of no where then promptly stated no buffet exists. Remove the dang sign or at least cover up 3/4 of it that is dedicated to the buffet, and reprint the black and white menus they offer to get rid of the half cover page again going over a non existent buffet. The guy wasn't very pleasant either, seemed annoyed. Then noticed the potential safety hazard on my way out as the doors lack handles or signage indicating how to open, and the right door was even locked shut, with the left being super stuck to push open making it seem like it's locked as well. Definitely won't be returning to this place. Was looking forward to checking them out too...oh well. read more

The Shahi Indian Cuisine restaurant is an absolute jewel of restaurants. The food was authentic with the traditional flair for Indian food. I had the lamb Korma which is undoubtedly the best I have ever eaten. The sauce was exquisite, the lamb tender and seasoned with a little bite. We had garlic naan which was freshly baked. My wife had the Tandoori sampler provided a variety of Tandoori meats which was sufficient for a whole meal . We can't rave enough about the service, cleanliness and efficiency of our entire experience. The Shahi restaurant was definitely of 5-Star quality. If you enjoy Indian cuisine, you will not be disappointed. read more

This restaurant isn't Indian food re-imagined. It's the real deal folks. I have yet to make is here for the buffet but I imagine it's killer. One of my favorite things is the flat bread (that's more like a cracker) that comes with 3 sauces. I've tried everything from the masala, to the saag, korma and pasanda. I've yet to meet a dish that was underwhelming. The portions are hearty and filling. One time we were given a rice pudding dessert. Killer. There were cardamom pods that gave it that earthy nutty flavor to counter balance the coconut. It was a great palate cleanser. Definitely check this place out if you are in the area. I was in Saginaw, having visited a local comic book store, and my friend and I were looking for a place to eat. This little Indian restaurant popped up and we thought we'd give it a try. We were not disappointed at all. The food was absolutely amazing. I had the mushroom masala and some garlic non-bread. The Nan bread had so much garlic flavor that it was delightfully intense. The mushroom masala, ordered with no spice, did not have spice but at the same time flavor was not forfeited. In other words the food can stand completely on its own even without a lot of spice. Add to that the great service. And when I told our server how much we enjoyed the food, his eyes lit up. That suggested to me that he had a vested interest in the success of that restaurant. And with food like that, this restaurant is in for a very long successful ride. read more

I frequently order takeout from shahi when I'm on call at the hospital. They have generous portions, and great food. It's one of the few places I've found in Saginaw where "spicy" actually means spicy. Even their chicken tikka masala will clear your sinuses (in a good way). I'm an average sized adult male and I usually get about 1.5 good meals out of a single order. Prices are reasonable, food is great! read more

Decided to check out Shahi as we were in the area. The decor is nice, bright and modern. We were there for dinner, so were too late for the lunch "all you can eat" buffet. We started with Muligatawney soup, which was vegetarian, rich and spicy. My hubby ordered chicken tikka masala and I ordered palek paneer and the okra fry. I love both and figured I can take the rest home. We got a paratha bread to share. The crockery they use is elegant all white, very classic. The main courses looked visually pleasing and healthy portion sizes. The palak paneer was delicately spiced, with just the right amount of heat. My husband really enjoyed his tikka masala. The okra had a bit too much of a pickled character and they included all types of vegetables so the okra kinda got lost but was also good. The paratha was perfect- Nice and flaky. Service was all you could ask for, wait staff was highly attentive. Although everything was made to order the courses came out pretty quickly. We loved it and plan to return soon!! read more

Well the menu might be a little overwhelming with over 154 items. There's something for everyone including vegetarian and vegan's. When I am at home, I usually dine out at for Indian food twice a month, rotating between new and favorite restaurants. However, I have been temporarily in Midland for two months and have been starving for Indian food! Midland's Lahori Foods is not worthwhile, so I finally drove to Saginaw to try Shahi's lunch buffet, and it was worth the trip. The storefront is in a strip center, has a large, open dining space with plenty of tables. The décor is a perfect example of other mid-tier mid-Asia restaurants; aged carpet with color that doesn't match anything, faded paint/wallpaper, oversized pictures of The Great Wall of China and rice patties... I know, discontinuity. But it's CHARMING and CLEAN and COMFORTABLE, just do not expect upscale dinning. The bathroom was also well-kept. The staff was friendly and accommodating; my drink was refilled and dirty plates cleared so readily that I did not even notice. As for the food, the buffet had a typical variety. 1 rice, 1 naan, 1 dal, some chicken curries, some vegetable curries, some cold salad bar options, a dessert. Everything I tried was enjoyable, but I have had better versions of each item at other restaurants. The food was all good quality, fresh, not oily, and I had multiple servings of my favorite dishes (tandoori chicken, channa chat, veggie curry). It was strange to see that an Indian menu included broccoli, yet I ate every curry-soaked piece of it I could. The naan was soft and tangy, and I oddly did not like the charred bits as much as usual. The channa chat was great, and the dal makhani was great because it was not as heavy as traditional butter-laden versions. The "mango mousse" dessert tasted like mango puree blended with either boxed vanilla pudding or with sweetened condensed milk. Not very enticing. But that didn't matter! The lunch buffet price was so cheap (less than $11 with tax) that I gladly splurged to get a mango lassi to-go. The lassi was smooth, refreshing, and also cheap, and I happily sipped it on my drive. Overall, Shahi is possibly the best Indian restaurant in the tri-city area. This place is IMMENSELY better than Lahori Foods, and I would eat here several times a week if only it were closer to Midland. They offer a wider menu than just the buffet, so specific orders and takeaway are welcome. Now go enjoy the delicious spiced food! read more

We were visiting from Sacramento, CA and wanted to have some good halal food. Decided to try this restaurant. It was an awesome experience all around. The food was very fresh and very tasty and the service was just superb. We tried their Grilled mixed platter, shrimp kadhai, rice and Naan. Everything was to it's best level. Strongly recommend in general and specifically for Muslims. Don't be put off by the the fact that they serve liquor. It's just the nature of their business.
