We've ordered delivery from this place many times. We visited the restaurant for the first time this past Saturday. I ordered the breakfast sampler. It comes with the breakfast classics including eggs, sausage, bacon, slice of ham, hashbrowns, and two stacks of pancakes. I chose to upgrade to chocolate chocolate chip pancakes. It goes without saying that the food tastes much better in the restaurant than when it is delivered to your home. That service here was not great. We were immediately seated at a table, but it took a minute for a server to come around to take our orders. After we ordered, the food came out pretty fast, but our server went MIA after that. I take that back. He came around once to check up on us, but it was in a perfunctory manner. He asked us how things were going and before I could respond that I wanted another pineapple lemonade splasher, he was gone. When it was time for us to pay, he came with a tablet. After a couple of failed attempts to ring up the bill on the tablet, he told us to pay up front. I can't blame the server for the okay service we received. He was responsible for too many tables. Now, you would think that this place needs to hire more staff, but I don't think that's the issue here. While we were eating, there were like four employees just wrapping napkins around forks at a table several feet from us. At least one of them could have jumped in and helped out the servers with assisting customers. Anyway, if you're looking for a traditional American breakfast, this is a solid place for that. I am not the type of person that writes Yelps for chain restaurants because, in general, the links in a chain should be standard in their sameness. True, some links are positioned in the chain in such a way where they are given the opportunity to serve in a more purposeful way, while others are located in the chain in a place where their function never had the chance to shine, but in general links should perform at the same baseline. Thus, I write for chain restaurants when a link under or over performs from these baseline expectations. And this I-hop was a chain link that not only sustained a quality dining experience but hoisted the expectation. For example, in my many years of eating out, I do not think that I have seen an I-hop, or Denny's or similar restaurant sing a version of the happy birthday song to a patron. But, here, in this restaurant, a group of servers, rallied around the table and sang happy birthday to a patron, with modest joy. I cheer for them, for adding this simple yet important touch. I say this because I am a person who is big on birthdays. I mean every year marks a milestone of survival, in a world where decay of life happens, by dreadful intention, casual default, unexpected circumstance, and vending machines falling down a la final destination. Plus, at one point, all will cease to have their next birthday. So when a person is brave enough to announce I am celebrating my birthday, it should be met with off key singing. Additionally, for some people, I-hop might seem like a throw away choice for a birthday meal place. But for some people I-hop might be the "nice" restaurant for a birthday meal. And for the second group, this place delivered a little bit more of candle light quality. I know it might seem weird to fixate on a birthday song, but, I know there a lot of people out there who find true glee (pun intended) when they are sang to on the anniversary of their birth. Another thing that was stellar for this place was the service. This experience happened a few weeks ago, but I want to say that the server who was lovely at her job was named Angel, (she read female). I might be wrong, but I might be right. The person who I had lunch with, wanted an omelette. There was an option for an omelette and unlimited pancake combo, which was the better deal. in places like this, the the best deals are unlocked by the choices we make, which is also a good life philosophy, if you kind of think about it. Angel, informed us, that she would allow for a second stack of pancakes to be taken home. I loved her suggestion because it would be hard to eat the omelette and the pancakes and then a second stack. This type of consideration being offered by the server instead of being asked for by the customer, is next level courtesy, and thus it is grand that it came from a server named Angel. Then the pancakes came, and the to-go plate was more like a pod. I clipped the picture for evidence. The pancakes were strawberry and cream, and, the extra room on the lid allowed for the whip not to be smushed into a mess. One time I went to a meditation spot, and I was placed in a pod that made the experience better. One time I got an MRI and then made me feel entombed. The pancakes were in the pod not the tomb. I also think that this place just generally had a lighter and more clean fill that other I-hops. We waited for a while, the cook was the one who sat us down and when the waiter finally appears from the bathroom instead of coming to greet us he goes to the register to look at his receipts? Every time I go to this IHOP there is always an issue. The servers often do not pay attention and the customer service is poor. Today was the last straw. My server was passive aggressive for no reason. We paid the bill by card and crossed out zero for tip because we left cash on the table. Instead of accepting it, he gave the cash back to us. That was uncalled for and uncomfortable. This location has been consistently disappointing. I have been given the wrong bill, wrong change, and had to deal with distracted or rude servers. This IHOP reopened recently, and hubs and I went to check it out. It is your standard ihop, but in the old location that local perennial favorite Carrow's was in. They made some good structural changes inside, so it seems larger and more spacious, but I would say the essence seemed the same. I tried something new (to me) from their menu - the lemon ricotta blueberry protein pancakes. What a (literal) mouthful to say! But to eat, they were outstanding! I really enjoyed the flavors, and that it had a decent amount of protein in the mix. They will be my go-to next time I return. Due to our family Thanksgiving get together being delayed until Saturday, we had to look for a stopgap meal to carry us over for Thanksgiving. We had planned to order some open faced turkey sandwiches at Marie Callendar's the day before with a pumpkin pie but were turned away being told they were only taking care of preordered Thanksgiving meal sets and were closed for everything else. We didn't really want to wait in line at one of the hotel buffets or pay about $80-100 per person at one of the restaurants in the area open on Thanksgiving since we were getting together with family on Saturday so we were faced with a true conundrum. Would Thanksgiving day be a McRib meal? As we drove home, we saw that the Carrows that had closed was replaced by an IHOP. Surely they would have some type of turkey dinner to give us an appropriate alternative! Well...kinda. No open faced turkey meal (even though the website says they do) but they did have a Cali Roasted Turkey Melt that had stuffing and cranberry sauce inside. Not perfect but it would do. We ordered 3 of them on sourdough but when we arrived back home, we found they had put them on multigrain which didn't thrill me but beggars can't be choosy. At least we wouldn't be eating McRibs on Thanksgiving. Mission accomplished, sort of. Real Thanksgiving was coming later and it was wonderful even though it was late. The new IHOP is very nice and clean inside. The service was rather slow but it was the day before Thanksgiving and many people were off work so it was understandable. The girl at the front desk was pleasant but didn't seem like she knew their menu very well. As I stated before, the turkey dinner is on the website though it wasn't on the menu provided. Maybe it was a breakfast or lunch menu? Getting our order wrong was disappointing too. Oh well, it is what it is or was. The parking lot is always crowded at Pacific Square so that's a bit of a hassle. The restaurant is open 24 hours so that was nice to know in case we ever get home late from Vegas or another long trip and everything else is closed. So glad that one of my all time favorite restaurants is now open in Gardena, where Carrows restaurant once was. IHOP first opened its doors in 1958 in the suburbs of Los Angeles. "Do you remember the combo Rooty Tooty Fresh and Fruity that was back in 1980's"? To this day still retained. There are 221 IHOP's in California; 213 in Texas; 146 in Florida and 86 in Georgia. The parking lot is really large, in a strip mall with other shops. As we entered we were quickly led to a nice, huge booth by the manger Ray as I learned later. He very nice, friendly and courteous. Ray gave us a bit of history about this IHOP which only opened qbout 5 weeks qgo. We were very fortunate to get one the waitress' named Jasmine who is the only one that did worked for Carrows. Jasmine was so kind, friendly and very attentive to us. We ordered the build your own french lemon ricotta toast combo, with hash brown, scrambled eggs and turkey bacon. Also ordered the beigian waffle with pork sauage links, with apple juice, coffee plus hot tea. All of the food was delicious and came out pretty fast. Manager Ray came back to check on us to see how everything was. My "cell phone camera" was still still eating (it eats first). He stated that my bacon hadn't been cooked well, he took it back to the kichen to re-cook it, "what a amazing gesture". Went in to ihop today, got a sr sampler and upgraded my pancake to cupcake pancake, I did not receive the toppings. I also got a short stack and did not receive any jelly. It wasn't busy, so why didn't the staff have sense to clean it up? I ordered a BLT. A BLT is simple - bread, mayo,tomato,lettuce bacon. Who messes up a BLT? The bacon was cold and pre- cooked. Who serves cold, pre- cooked bacon? There was a speck of mayo. AND I mean a speck! Had to ask for more, as I could barely see it. I didn't even finish it. It was terrible . The cook clearly didn't care. I observed staff just standing around talking,oblivious to the dirty floor OR asking customers if they needed anything... really? Your paid to socialize and not clean up?? I realize IHOP is not fine dining, yet they have existed since 1958. They do not care at this one. After months of this new location opening, I finally got to eat a nice breakfast here. Quickly assisted and seated, we chose what we wanted, the server was very nice. However wanted to be seated away from the crowd, in a corner I'd say, as I was overwhelmed by the noise and lot going on. Thus that led to want to make a review here. Much time passed by and I was kind of getting concerned about the time of receiving my breakfast. Only to have it after 30 minute wait. I was fine with it, didn't mind being patient with it today. I also think this superb service isn't sitting well with some, as this is a newly open location and these servers/employees maybe new to this work environment or adjusting. Thus I'll give it a pass and hopefully soon the service will be excellent. The server who assisted us did noticed the long wait for the breakfast and apologized, which we understood. The food was great! We had Breakfast Sampler? And the Breakfast steakhouse combo?, with coffee, orange juice and pancakes. I did fear asking for a refill on my small orange juice, as I had a past experience that refills were not possible. But the nice server did ask me if I wanted a refill, which I was very surprised about. I couldn't decline the offer as the small orange juice was not enough to drown down the delicious breakfast. We had walked in looking to be seated and out of nowhere Mr rude Brandon had told me and my girl that we are not taken any seaters which was not an issue. I have been a resident of the Gardena area for 50 years now, and my, how things have changed for the worse! The service was much better when it was a Carrow's at this location instead of this newer IHOP. Apparently, the majority latino staff do not care much for black people because I was literally bumped out the way, twice, and they did not bother to pardon themselves. Instead, they looked at me like I was a vagrant. I was there to pick up a to-go order that I placed on the app. When it was my turn to be assisted after the Uber Eats and Door Dash workers, the hostess Ariana stared at me and barked, "Name!?" Okay, sure, they're busy, I get it, so I ignored her rudeness and told her my name. She then slammed a clipboard on the countertop and an ink pen and sternly told me, "PRINT AND SIGN." At that point I said, "It seems like people here are in a bad mood today." Ariana ignored me, grabbed my order, and DROPPED the bag on the countertop. Had I not pre-paid, I would have simply turned, walked out, and never again step foot in this establishment. Instead, I stood there a moment, awaited her eye contact, I smiled and said, "Wow, thank you, Ariana." She was a bit amused herself and said, "Oh, have a nice day, byyyyye!" I cannot help but wonder how she would feel if she were out with her family and was treated the way she treated me. Common decency is simply lost in many people these days. But, everyone has their lessons in karma coming their way. If you are okay with rudeness, a very busy atmosphere, average food, and being treated like your business is absolutely NOT valued, then dine here. If you want to be a respected guest with a nice dining experience, go elsewhere. This IS NOT it. You will probably have less patience than me. Clearly, management does not care about one person's experience when they are making up the difference with the multitude of customers with whom respect and courtesy is unimportant.
