We should have known going in that this wasn't going to be a good experience. The lobby smelled like mildew. The food wasn't terrible but it could've been better. Our waitress and every other server in the restaurant acted like a robot. No personality whatsoever. They brought out our bill with the meal and never asked if we wanted refills or if our meal was ok. And the building was just dirty. There are many that were truly anticipating the arrival of the State College IHOP. Me, meh... Been down South enough and seen them everywhere. Honestly, I haven't been to one since the mid 80s. I am not typically crazy about chains. Especially ones that are mainly in the breakfast business. But, it was the new place in town. My wife and kids are lovers of this type of food. They like safe food choices like this. So, we made the trip. Actually did it twice, two Friday's in a row. First, it is located in the old Perkins building. Parking is odd as it seems to share lots with a business next door. During both stops, there was snow plowed into huge mounds making parking tough. Entering and exiting the lot can be confusing or challenging, at times, too. Onto the dining experience. Upon entrance, we were seated immediately both times. Not really surprising. We came in on Friday nights but it was after 7 both times. After seating, we were waited on immediately. The first weekend, the waitress was very attentive, friendly, and got everything right. She visited the table multiple times and was quite attentive and friendly. The second weekend, the waitress was friendly enough. But she wasn't incredibly attentive. Multiple items were forgotten or came to the table late. It felt, somewhat, like we were a burden to this young waitress. She wasn't incredibly engaged and almost seemed like she wanted to rush us out of there. Maybe she was tired out from the rush. It was THON weekend and perhaps the supper crowd was tough. The food was good. But breakfast food is typically the easiest and lamest dining experience there is. If you can't make breakfast right, you have no reason to be in the food business. I enjoyed their new crepe bundle meal on the first weekend. The crepe was pretty tasty. The second weekend I had the country fried steak. Nothing special. It was good for this type of food. The one thing that really impressed me was the menu. They have expanded into burger and steak territory, over the years. So if breakfast fare isn't your thing, you can order from this part of the menu. This impressed me because I wasn't aware of this until this store opened. So the bottom line is, it is a standard IHOP. Service is spotty depending on waiter/waitress. Food is typical breakfast fare. The restaurant is in a newly renovated building and is clean. Parking is a crapshoot. I'm not above going back. It is a decent later evening option. IHOP is = to Denny's IMHO. read more

We were surprised to get seated within 5 minutes and the bubbly waitress came over soon after we sat down. It was not busy at all. We got drinks 20 minutes later. Then toast. Could never get the requested jelly. An omelet, onion rings, and potato pancakes took more than hour. My husband is not one to get up and walk out- so we sat and sat and sat, thinking its GOT to be coming any second. The bill was $30. She asked if we wanted to see the manager. He/she never came out either. Finally demanded a discount (we never got angry or loud), seeing as how extra items had been tacked on to the bill anyway. That took an additional 10 minutes. I would give this place zero stars if I could. Our waiter engaged in inappropriate sexual conversation with the patrons. Extremely unwelcoming atmosphere for members of the LGBT community as the patrons and our waiter were mocking people's sexual orientation. Additionally, phrases like "do you speak English?" or "why don't you speak that Ching Chong?" They also we're mocking various accents from other countries. If these people are the types of patrons and personnel that IHOP has, I will not be coming back. I will also not visit ANY IHOP in the future. This is despicable behavior and blatant discrimination. In regards to the actual restaurant, we waited over 30 minutes to get our drinks (water and coffee) and over an hour to have our orders taken. Definitely will not be coming back to this (or any other IHOP) again. We were told our wait would be between 30-45 minutes; ended up waiting over an hour and fifteen minutes. When someone in our party went up to check for the third time, they had taken our name off the list. By the time our food came out, it had been over two hours since we got there. Not sure why but the back half of the restaurant was completely empty. The food ended up being pretty terrible, too, unfortunately. Everything was either burnt or undercooked. So, in general a pretty bad experience in general. BUT, to make matters worse, I asked about some ingredients in the dishes because I have dietary restrictions. The waitress started grilling me on what specifically "my problem is" and what happens to me. I told her that it is a relatively severe allergy but that what I was ordering will be fine for me. She then insisted that she send the manager out to speak to me. I first told her that it was completely unnecessary and that I would prefer that she didn't do that, but she insisted. When the manager came out, he was clearly unfamiliar with what my situation is (understandable, I didn't need him to consult me and verify that what I was ordering was going to be okay for me). He started asking if I had an epipen (don't need one, don't use one) and was talking to me like I shouldn't even be there. It was a pretty humiliating and frustrating process; I told him that I've been dealing with this my whole life and that I didn't need him to weigh in on it, though I appreciated the efforts to "help". Then, when the food was finally brought out, it was brought out completely separately and the waitress referred to it as "the allergy food". To kind of explain why this was so frustrating to those who do not have autoimmune and/or allergy issues... I felt like I was singled out, talked down to, belittled, and made fun of. I shouldn't have to walk in and disclose my medical history to a bunch of strangers and get a uninformed manager to sign off on whether or not I can consume something. Just go home to eat. We tried to eat last sunday morning on our way to the hospital. Got a table quickly but server didn't come for a while. She kept just disappearing our whole visit. Tried to bring us somebody elses food, told us she would go look for ours, when she returned she had our COLD food, told her, she said sorry and walked away. Tried to pay up front but nobody told us to pay the server and just ignored us. I finally asked the busser and he was the nicest person we met the whole time we were there. He got a girl, she came out looked at the bill said it wasn't hers and walked away. Went back to find our server and never did. Another server took it back to her in the back and the host returned it to us. Also wondering why you ask how you did on a survey and nobody every responds to you. I've been to my fair share of IHOP restaurants before, but this one was different. Different because we waited over 40 mins for a two person table, but that's not what I'm upset about. Im upset because I could see at least 5 un-bussed tables, and not a single person cleaned them. I finally sat down, ate, paid the bill and these tables were still not cleaned. Disappointed with the staff in that regard. Also, our waitress only checked in on us 5 mins before we were ready to leave. Service here was not ideal, but the food was good. Wish I could leave 0 stars. Walked in on Sunday morning to grab breakfast with my girlfriend. Waited five minutes before someone came up to help us. Was told there was a 20 minute wait. Put my name on the list. Thirty minutes later still didn't get a text that my table was ready. Went in to see what was going on, and again had to wait five minutes to be helped. Meanwhile there's four tables that people have finished eating at and are waiting to be cleaned off. Manager was super rude when I said I had been waiting 15 minutes longer then what I was told and wanted to know how much longer. There are staff just standing around. From lack of server attention, to terrible food (burnt bacon and stale noodle like hash browns) it is guaranteed that I will not go back. I've been to IHOP's before and have never been treated more poorly by staff when the restaurant was not even remotely busy. Management, I'd highly recommend you work on better staffing levels, talk to your kitchen staff about proper food preparation, and actually be invested in your customers. At 2:15 pm on a weekday afternoon, there was no one to greet customers, no one waiting tables and only a few tables in use. We waited for maybe 10 minutes with no one around. The phone number is prominently displayed so I called it. It rang 22 times. No answer. But there were sounds of life coming from the kitchen so I swung the door part way and asked "Are you open." That got their attention. The waitress, a charming energetic woman explained that they were in a "shift change," and so there was a lull in service. Apparently there was a lull in the kitchen too. The food came out -- eventually. It was cold. The "hash browns" were a large single chunk of crispy potato-like substance and required a knife to cut. The "brioche bun" was both stale and waxy. The burger was a retired hockey puck. We are not gourmets. We are not serial complainers. We don't have high expectations for places like this. I don't expect to return. read more

Sometimes predictability can be a good thing. You know what to expect in regards to menu, pricing, atmosphere, etc. If done well, you will be pleasantly relieved that your favorite chain restaurant in Billings serves the same delicious breakfast as does it's sister-shop in Bangor. Generally speaking, every IHOP restaurant I've been to (several dozen in my lifetime) keeps to this same predictability, with the exception of a few specific regional specialties catering to local tastes. The IHOP restaurant located on South Atherton is no exception to this. Good food, great prices, reliable predictability. So what you ask, makes this restaurant as good (or better) than the other diner-style restaurants in the area? Especially when compared to some of the more "historic" and iconic diners in State College. A few things: Cleanliness: Windows are spotless and ledges are dirt free. Carpets and walls are clean. Seats and tables are clean and not sticky from syrup, spilled drinks, etc. Condiments are organized and uniform between tables. Bathrooms are spotless and well kept. Dining area always well lit, preventing any "Wizard of Oz" moments (dim the lights to hide how gross our carpet and table is). There is nothing going on here that isn't out in the open for everyone to see. Staff: Friendly, courteous and always presenting a professional appearance. We have come to know several of our regular servers by their first names and every one of them seem willing to go out of their way to do a good job. Although you would think this would be expected, I cannot count on two hands how many times we've had servers from other local restaurants come to our table with an attitude or looking like they woke up under a bridge, wearing dirty uniforms, dirty hands, bad breath, body odor and unkempt hair. If I have a question about something on the menu, I know I won't get a roll of the eyes and a curt, non-informative answer. I can use two words to describe the staff here: professional and reliable. Parking: Perhaps it is due to the restaurant being adjacent to the Super 8 motel, but we've never had a hard time finding parking here (excluding game days). Large parking, with plenty of spaces. You won't be prowling through the lot to pounce on the next open space, only to find out it's too tight for your SUV to fit in. The lot is also well lit at night. If you eaten at any IHOP anywhere else, the items here won't come as a shock. In fact, if all goes well, nothing should come as a shock. You come in with your family, sit down, place your order, get your food, eat, pay your bill and leave. Reliable predictability, and shouldn't that be what it's all about? read more

When this place first opened up this year (2014) in State College, it was a total disaster. There wasn't nearly enough parking, the wait was horrible, and there were no refrigerators for the kitchen. They had a refridgerated truck sitting in the parking lot, taking up even more parking. I can't blame it for not having like 6 or more of the items on the menu, it was the weekend of the blue and white game. I did think it was a little bit weird that our server took us to our table, got our order, brought our food out, then said I'm going on break. No one came back to check on us, she gave us our check with our food, why take a table, there was other servers on and it wasn't busy. A bunch of her tables around us were left dirty too! They food was good, other then the strawberries on my pancakes I could tell were frozen. If they were fresh, they meal would have been great. My husband said that some of his food was hot, some warm, and some cold. I believe the server had some effect with our food. We will go back and try it again, because our friends want to go.
