The past 5 trips to this IHOP have all had the same basic problem: No matter what we order, at least one of the dishes is made wrong, and it absolutely doesn't matter how we order, this always happens. In addition we have often had to wait a long time for anyone to take drink orders, and several times have had to ask repeatedly for things like ketchup or syrup. (It's a breakfast place, why not leave ketchup on the table?) Good Things: There is one really, really good waiter there. If you get the guy with the forearm band, he's a total pro. If not, your luck may vary. The food is good, and priced well. The place is clean, the lines move quickly, and there's plenty of seating. So if luck is on your side and you get a good server who does your order right, you'll probably have a good experience. read more

I went to IHOP in State College for the first time early on a Friday evening -- around 5:30. There were just two of us. Having been to an IHOP before, I was looking forward to the meal, because they serve consistently delicious food and have a large menu to choose from. Unfortunately, when I went to IHOP, I had hands-down, the worst service I have ever experienced in a restaurant. When we arrive, the restaurant was humming with activity, but not overly busy. That said, it took fifteen minutes for our server to come get our drink orders. At that time, we placed our food orders as well. After ten minutes, the server came over with our water, and we had to wait another five for coffee. Fifteen minutes after we placed our order, we asked about our food -- we had somewhere to be shortly. Our server told us it would be five to ten minutes. When he noticed our anxiety, he offered to have it boxed up, but we assured him that we could eat in twenty minutes. I asked if I could pay, and of course he said yes -- then, when he brought my credit card back, he stood and watched as I calculated the tip and signed, which I found tremendously rude. Twenty-five minutes after he told us five to ten more minutes, our food arrived, and we immediately asked for boxes and utinsels to pack it up. A few minutes later, he showed up with boxes (and forgot the utinsels), and told us to have a good night, and walked away. I wish that it had just been our server who had been substandard. Throughout our time in the dining room, we could hear screaming, yelling, and cussing in the kitchen. The waitress in the next section over complained to others about our waiter. The chef and manager had to serve food since things were taking so long. It was a stressful and unpleasant experience, and I didn't even get to eat there. I essentially waited an hour for take-out. While the food is tasty at this IHOP, the service is awful, and I was extremely put off by my experience. I will not be going back. read more

Waited 25 min for food on a Tuesday afternoon. Food was barely warm. Serves food and left table and I had no silverware. Took another five minutes to even eat and then food was cold. Went to pay and had to wait 8 min until someone came out to the registers. Horrible service. Waited well over 5 min for someone to even come out and greet us. Ordered in a reasonable amount of time once we finally sat but the food took a very long time and was wrong. The manager needs to make sure someone is there to greet you when you walk in. I watched 3 guys walk in and wait so long they left. We won't ever be back! And here's something that's strange that probably is a nuisance to some. They pre wrap the silverware in a napkin and paper tape. However it's just a knife and fork. No spoon! I didn't mind stirring in the Half And Half with my knife but for a place where I bet the majority of guests order coffee, I thought it to be strange. All in all though, I liked this place. My friend and I are two early twenty year olds and we got sexually harassed by our waiter when we went to this ihop. from the minute we walked in the guy (who was like 40s) was creepy and sat down at our table with us, talked about doing drugs like ecstasy and LSD while he was working, TOUCHED MY FRIENDS JACKET wayyyy too close to her chest, and made a ton of weird inappropriate comments to the point my friend and I were trying to leave as soon as possible. the food sucked too and I couldn't even get a take out box because we were trying to leave. the only other worker (the manager?) encouraged the other waiter to make these jokes and even told me that "he must fancy you because he used a half a bottle of whipped cream on that waffle" followed by a wink. The restaurant smelled really terrible especially in the morning. The wired and sick smell made people feel like not hungry at all. The food is good though. Tasty and fresh. Just graduated from Penn State and I must say over my four years that this is the worst service of anywhere. Even at McDonald's on College, where they are rushed on most nights, they are still very friendly. My family ate there to celebrate my graduation, and waited two hours for food. Two hours! Was simple stuff too. Waitress was new and was so overworked with tables she began to break down and cry. Felt so bad for her. Then manager comes and apologizes to us in the form of manager speak, keeping a smile on her face like nothing was wrong and handing us a discount. She would rather just hand us a discount than learn from her mistakes, which is bad management. This is an ongoing issue, too. Shame the State College Diner across from it closed, they were very good compared to this place. read more

Trying to eat breakfast here this morning was by far the worst dining experience I have ever had - E.V.E.R. What do you make of a waitress that comes to the table, asks you what drinks you'd like, delivers water within a few minutes and then never returns? And when I say never, I mean it was at least 45 minutes (without exaggeration). The entire section that she was "serving" was in an uproar because she never came back! We thought she quit! We asked to speak with the manager, who showed up about 10 minutes later. We explained that in 45 minutes, our waitress hadn't been back with our coffee, but we could see that other tables were being seated after us, and had their meals in the same time. Tables in our section were walking out - they didn't care. People were getting up and finding their own utensils, ketchup, napkins, you name it, and helping themselves to it from other tables. We finally hailed down a young man named Joey. Joey explained that he'd help. He brought us coffee and mugs. He wasn't a waiter, but he whipped out a crumpled piece of paper from his pocket and took down our order. He placed the order and brought MORE coffee. Joey was the best! The "manager" came out to speak with us finally and she gave us some standard nonsense about she was happy we spoke up and the waitress is busy in the back with another order. Sheer nonsense! How about saying "I'm sorry and we'll expedite your order"?! Long story short, the waitress finally came back from her smoke break and pretended to pick up the pieces. In the meantime, Joey and another coworker brought us some of the food that the kitchen made but delivered to empty tables of people that left from hunger and frustration. We took the second hand food and ate it since it was already an hour + since we walked in those doors. You're probably wondering why we didn't leave. Well, some of our group left and went to Subway across the street. Others stayed, and regretted it. OK, enough complaining. Just wanted to let you know it was the worst dining experience ever. And the "manager" is an enabler to the situation, and not even remotely a customer oriented people person. When we left, we noticed 3 employees "hanging out" at the dumpsters - all smoking. Two others were sitting in a van in the parking lot, also on a smoke break. And sure enough, our waitress walked out too ... probably to finish up her earlier break (all while Joey was still servicing customers to the best of his abilities). Final words - promote Joey, who was doing his job, along with the waitress's and manager's job. Fire the rest of the lazy employees who could care less. The owner of this place should take a good hard look at who's running the show here. read more

Got to go to the new Ihop that finally open in State College and it was great. The place was hopping and you could tell that word had spread fast about it being open. We actually finished up just before even more people were showing up to be seated. At the moment the place is not open 24 hrs. but it is understandable until they get into the grove with the new staff and what not. So incredibly disorganized, you can hear people screaming at each other in the kitchen and the wait staff walks around like they don't know what they're doing. Every time I come here there are different people working, and you can tell they can't keep staff and that no one wants to work here because it is so bad. I'm sitting here waiting for them to fix a botched order for me right now and I can hear two employees arguing loudly in the kitchen. This is the worst experience I have ever had in a restaurant......Serving was SUPER SLOW. We waited for about an hour after ordering. The server gave us coffee, but we waited for 20mins for her to get the cream for our coffee. When we finally got our meals, the food wad COLD! I ordered a philly cheesesteak, and the meat was cold and dry! My friends got omelette, and the omelette was COLD AND DRY. We talked to the manager, and she just took our dish and made the kitchen redo our order. The food are OK this time, but they did not give me my side even though I asked for it several times. I thought I would wait several weeks after this place opened in State College to give the staff a chance to know what they are doing. I went there on Sunday morning and arrived about ten minutes after they opened at 6 am since they are not open 24 hours yet. It took about 5 minutes before someone came out to seat me (by myself). I was seated by one of the waiters and he did get my juice that I ordered promptly but he was not waiting on my table and got me the menu and the waitress that was to be waiting my table came over after I was handed the menu and I told her I was not ready to order yet (had not had a chance to even open the menu yet) and she said she would be back. I waited for 30 minutes and she never came back to check on me and I had finished the juice I had ordered and almost finished reading the Sunday newspaper. I had to leave soon to get to work so I flagged down the gentlemen who had originally taken my order and asked for my bill. He apologized to me that the waitress had not come to take my order. I left a small tip. When I paid my bill the lady at the counter wanted to not charge me for the juice but my personal beliefs would not accept that. I have been to other IHOP's and have liked them. I know that this place is still new and probably still needs more time to get up to speed on customer service. I will probably wait some more before I return and will update my review then. 3/2/14 Today was my second attempt at dining at IHOP here in State College. I guess they must have known I was coming because I could not even get in. Seems there was a problem with the locks or something this Sunday morning because the staff was outside and Auman's locksmith was there when I arrived at 615 am (supposed to open up at 6 am). So it seems this place is still having issues. Well I am glad that State College has Waffle Shop. 3/16/14 My third attempt at dining here. I arrived around 630 am and only waited a little while before someone noticed and seated me. My waitress was friendly and service was good. I ordered the Garden Omelette with the hash brown potatoes. I enjoy omelettes but the Garden omelette seemed a little bland to me. I don't know if it was bland because they use buttermilk and wheat pancake mix in the egg or not but the eggs were just not to my liking in this omelette. Gone to this IHOP multiple times, every time we've had either a forgotten food item/cold food/wrong food item. One time they brought our food and they took so long to get us silver ware my one friend started eating his pancakes with his hands. There never been fast or moderately correct on the orders. They run such a disaster of a restaurant that they have lines waiting for tables, while having half of the tables in the restaurant open. With no paper towels in the restroom, a burnt egg (which we were promised a newly cooked that we never received), and a screw up on checks we've never enjoyed eating here. read more

Having an IHOP in State College is great! Denny's was getting old, and the Waffle Shop is only open until 4 on a good day. I'm really happy that this finally came to State College. I was not expecting much, with the "breakfast" at the Ramada a disaster we decided to do the IHOP. Yes it is a chain, but this location is doing it right -it is pretty big, so despite the large number of cars, wee were seated right away. I do not know if new or newly remodeled but this place was spotless. The menu is large and the crepes were a big hit. So unless you are looking for the PSU experience on College Ave - there is no reason to not come here for standard breakfast. read more

Had the worst customer service experience ever here. We didn't get silverware. It took forever to get refills when we all had water. Just water. The coffee was disgusting. We had a ton of waiters just bringing out food but couldn't find out where anything went. They asked two of the people in our party multiple times if they had what they were bringing out but the one time of the girls did spot her meal in a waiter's hand. She was told it wasn't hers. Then they took it in the kitchen and brought it back ten minutes later. The same plate! It was obviously cold so they told her they would make her a new one but they just microwaved it. The manager wouldn't even come out, even though there was obviously a problem. Finally someone in my party went to find the manager herself. She wasn't overly helpful but she did get a new meal for the girl who got a microwaved one. Oh yeah and we watched them take a plate from our table that they gave out on accident and put it on another table. So you might be getting food from another table when you eat here. read more
