I come to IKEA to eat. The Swedish Meatball dinner is a bargain for $5.99. Eight meatballs with gravy, haricot verts, a scoop of mashed potatoes, and lingonberry preserves make for a perfectly acceptable meal. The service is cafeteria style which is okay. The chocolate cake is to die for! I should have scoped out the case more and picked out the largest piece. I had a nice, basic meal for under $10. The restaurant is on the second level. I miss the smørgasbord restaurants that were around when I was a kid. We would go once a month, on Friday night, as a treat. I loved the meatballs ( and I'm still a sucker for a good meatball, from any country), and I loved all the choices like weird meat, cheese & bread to make skinny sandwiches, jello, cauliflower with curry sauce, and especially the lingonberry jam. Oh, I'm a jam fan from way back. So going to Ikea for lunch is like a trip back in time for me. The meatballs, potatoes, and lingonberry is a great snapshot from my childhood. This review is just for the breakfast. I got the Swedish American breakfast ($2.99) and substituted the meat for another portion of the eggs since I'm a vegetarian. I also got a bowl of the corn chowder. My friend had the ikea family card so you can get a free coffee with that. Pro: Super cheap food. It was probably a bit more than $5 for the items I got. Cons: Not the best tasting...I'd compare it to standard cafeteria food. The soup was not very appetizingly colored and was a bit strange in consistency. My nephew loves this place, we ask him where he wants to go for breakfast, for some reason he likes this place. Which is also good for me because breakfast is only $2. Its not anything special but its a great bargain. If i was in college I'd probably come here every weekend! For $2 you get scrambled eggs, chicken sausage (you can sub for bacon), potatoes, and Swedish pancakes. But what i like is the automatic expresso machine. It cost only $1 for any expresso drink, late, americana, shot of expresso, ect. and free refills. You can also get it for free if you are an Ikea family member which you can sign up for free online or at the kiosk at the entrance. If you want a to go paper cup for the coffee you'll have to ask for it by the exit where the sell the hotdogs, just show them your IKEA family member card and ask for a coffee cup, then head upstairs and fill it in the expresso machine. Whats cool about the expresso machine is that it grinds the beans each time per order. So you could easily add an extra shot of expresso into your latte and its all freshly ground coffee. The restaurant is not the hotdog place located next to the exit. Its located on the second floor just as you go up the stairs near the entrance. Impressive!! I've heard great things about this place when it comes to it Swedish meatballs. Sooooo, today I tested them out for myself. It did not disappoint!! The Swedish meatballs were amazingly delicious. Tender and flavorful! The veggie mixture (carrots, broccoli, and cauliflower) was tasty and perfectly cooked. Mashed potatoes to die for and they were topped the the lovely sauce! The line was long to get the food around 12 noon, however, it moved fairly quickly and I was able to get my food within 10 minutes, which wasn't too bad, in my opinion. I haven't tried anything else here, but I know I'll definitely be back again to have more Swedish meatballs if I'm in ikea and need a break from browsing! Give them a try! read more

Okay, I'm gonna be the odd-person out here when I say that I'm not a fan of the meatballs. I've tried both the Swedish and the chicken ones and they're just not very good. My favorite part of the IKEA menu? The desserts... While the main course offerings are in no way fancy, they offer a limited decent meal at a very reasonable price. Quite filling! They also had a mini version of the same for a kids meal. Moving onto the desserts- my favorite is the Daim Torte cake followed by the Dammsugare aka punsch-rolls (these little beauties have a generous dose of Punsch/ Swedish Arack liqueur). Kids often enjoy the pretty marzipan coated jam cakes. We also enjoy the Elderflower and Ligonberry drinks available here. So I honestly don't know what compelled me to write a review about this place. It feels strange, especially since IKEA isn't necessarily (or automatically) known for it's food, but here is what I can say about it. Ever find yourself overwhelmed, exhausted and worn out from shopping at IKEA? Ever seek something to do while your friend/relative/SO is off doing his/her shopping frenzy? For those of you who have never been, it is a cafeteria-style eatery with a fairly limited menu, except what they serve is actually delicious and arguably healthy for you. It is located just up the stairs from the entrance and an automatic left where you simply cannot miss it. It is also near the stairway down from the "showroom upstairs". The selection includes (and is not limited to) meatballs, salad, mashed potatoes, steamed vegetables, deserts, coffee, fountain drinks, etc. A regular entree comes with two sides. I had the chicken leg meal, and it came with steamed vegetables and mashed potatoes. I also had coffee since I would eventually have to make the drive up to LA that same night. I wouldn't have gone wrong if I chose something different. There is plenty of seating. Tables tend to line up next to each other. Towards the back corner, there are actual round tables while a TV quietly shows older episodes of Sesame Street. Once you are done eating, you also need to bring your tray to the dish-collecting area, where they have somewhat of a systematic way of organizing them. Just insert your dirty (and possibly full) trays into the rolling receptacle for the staff to sort and clean. FYI: - According to an employee, there was a law that dictated that single-use plastic straws are no longer provided by IKEA. So, if you absolutely need straws for one reason or another, especially for kids or anybody with some special condition, make sure you bring your own, whether it be disposable or metallic. - Rolling carts are available for up to 3 trays to transport. - Entrees are either $5.99 or $6.99, and bowls of soup are $1.99. read more

I was very excited to try the desserts for the 80th anniversary. My family and I went to the restaurant at the San Diego Ikea. A huge rat came out of the kitchen and the employees were saying "I am sorry" as one of them was trying to catch the animal. These animal was going up the chairs and around the restaurant. What a disgusting encounter and it let me thinking about how sanitary this place could be and I wonder if the places will be cleaned properly and throughly after that incident. I came here for my birthday meal - if you sign up for the Ikea family rewards/membership card, you get 1 free meatball entree and a daim cake! I also got sweet potato chili (also not included) to share with my family. The meatballs are kind of just you average meatball, but they taste great with the cranberry sauce and mashed potatoes. It was more on the sweet side and reminded me a bit of how sweet nutella is. It was a great cake, but too artificially sweet for me. My parents got the salmon meatballs and they were pretty good but fell apart easily. They were almost like mini salmon cakes. They also needed a sauce, or maybe my dad didn't answer when she asked if he wanted sauce on it, haha. I still preferred the classic Swedish meatballs though. Overall, good food for a good price. So I went to Ikea around 1030 am on a weekday, a little after they opened. I was surprised to see their restaurant pretty full. But then I realized that they offer a $1 breakfast! This restaurant is on the 2nd floor of ikea, set up like a cafeteria. There's food ready to grab, and other foods plated ala carte. No real wait, even though it was busy, and the prices were very fair. So naturally I had to try their $1 breakfast. Scrambled eggs + turkey sausage + potatoes. All of it was nice and hot. The scrambled eggs were soft and I was a pleasantly surprised by the crisp exterior of the potatoes. Not necessarily fine dining, but still decent quality for cafeteria style food!... I love this busy little cafeteria. The food is simple, yummy, and inexpensive. While I do think it's not the prettiest plate I've even been served, it's always tasty enough that every time I'm in IKEA to shop, I drop in to the restaurant for a bit to eat. Be warned though, the queue is long and a bit slow-moving, but the staff always seems happy and very friendly. As well-getting a seat during peak hours is an exercise in zen patience. Pricing is reasonable and the food is decent. You just have to pick up after yourself. The wedge salad was good, tons of dressing and bacon. Simply put, I love IKEA food. Ever since my sister and her boyfriend introduced me to their Swedish meatballs, I don't see any other meatballs the same way. I've had their Swedish meatballs, chicken tenders, and breakfast (but at the IKEA in OC area!) The Swedish meatball dish is the perfect amount with the perfect blend of flavors. It seems pretty small, but 15 meatballs is a pretty good amount. The plate also comes with mashed potatoes and lingonberry sauce. The sauce for the meatballs surprisingly goes well with the sweetness of the lingonberry sauce. I typically mix the sauces when I dip my meatballs in them. The chicken tenders have tender meat, and they come with some good ol' French fries! If you're ever at IKEA and want a cheap meal that's pretty tasty, go to their cafe! Seeing how my friend Wendy and I needed to hit up IKEA for some housewares, we figured we'd have lunch at the IKEA restaurant this past weekend. Additionally, when I saw a bottle of Swedish holiday soda, I figured I'd try it out as a separate purchase; not too bad, though it had a slightly pruny taste to it. Served cafeteria-style, the long line indicated something of interest and, upon closer inspection, I found the catalyst of the crowd. Meatballs, millions of them, were on sale. In an early celebration of the holiday season, Ikea was offering their $4.99 meatball plate for only $1. I only happened upon it, but it was too good a deal to pass up so my friend and I ordered two plates. Soup was also $1 per bowl (down from $1.99) so we also grabbed some of their clam chowder to try. The meatballs were served with gravy, mashed potatoes, and a lingonberry sauce that reminded me of a Swedish thanksgiving dinner. Despite looking tiny, the plate of meatballs was surprisingly filling. The clam chowder had a smooth texture even through the bits of vegetables throughout the soup and the whole thing was well seasoned. While the food wasn't the best thing I've ever had, it was pretty tasty. Plus, you absolutely can't argue with the price. Anything at an 80% discount, while keeping up with quality, tastes that much better. However, like any great deal, this one won't last so I highly recommend dropping by, making a beeline for the cafe, and grapping some meatballs for lunch. This place can get a bit nuts so be warned. I've been here several times and never had an issue. The chocolate cake is very rich and awesome (1 slice is shareable in my opinion), they also have little desserts that are yummy. Sorry I don't remember the name of them but they're by the register instead of by the cake. Entree wise you can't go wrong with the meatballs. I prefer the chicken meatballs and because I don't like the texture of their veggies I also get a second scoop of mashed potatoes instead. Definitely get extra gravy and lots of butter. (so good!). I recommend the dinner rolls, they remind me of Hawaiian sweet rolls. If you have an IKEA card you get a free drink or if you get a same plate you get a free salad/soup with your IKEA card and a drink. The only thing I dislike about this place is the seating area. It's small for the amount of people that eat here at times and if you're by yourself you can have a heck of a time finding a place to sit unless you ask to sit by random people. (which I've done and they look at me like I have three heads) Oh and their coffee machine is pretty awesome! We stood there for way too long getting all the various coffee drinks. I'm pretty sure the food that is served in the Ikea "cafe" is the type and quality of food served in a Swedish elementary school cafeterias. Cheap, tasty and full of fillers! You get what you pay for. Ribs are only $7.99, personally that makes a bit suspicious... How are their ribs only $7.99? Are the ribs from China?? Did they have to put each rib together?? Anyway, the mac & cheese wasn't very good. The mashed potatoes abs meatballs weren't bad though. I like that Ikea is very kid friendly!! The have children chairs & tables in a play area, which is located all the way in the back. They also provide complimentary bibs and a microwave for nursing moms! Food is like their furniture. Food and service were missing in a big way. We have eaten there many times in the past. Better to call ahead and see if they have any food ready for lunch. What a dismal experience. Dirty, lackadaisical staff and little of no food prepped! Garbage. read more
