A big fish in a small pond. This small neighborhood sushi place is tucked under apartment buildings but is worth the trip out to sample their delicious morsels of fish. I almost always get sashimi or sushi when I'm here accompanied by a few rolls once in awhile. The sushi lover for two on the menu is a fantastic sampling of what they have to offer: it comes w/ Baltimore roll, shrimp tempura roll, and a dozen or so sushi pieces. Perfect to share. Now I have a new addiction to their Baltimore roll; simple and delicious--real crab meat with a dusting of old bay on the roll. Bottom line is this place has amazing service (cute Korean lady up front who is sweet but you can tell she runs a tight ship) and their fish is so fresh! My favorite is their white tuna. I loved every moment at Ikko Sushi! And with the rain outside, the ambiance felt like a metro stop in a busy city. I went this past Saturday to use my groupon and although I didn't make a reservation, my friend and I got seated within 20 minutes. Quite the small restaurant, but a full house and not a long wait. Once we were seated, our waitress provided us with wonderful service and made sure to check up on whether we were okay or not. 5 stars! We ordered the Love Roll 2 and the Rock & Roll special rolls and loved every bite of it. The sashimi and avocado on top of the Love Roll was very fresh and with the fried soft shell crab and eel wrapped within, it was like biting into a dark chocolate chip cookie that came straight out the oven. The sushi was also sliced perfectly. Similarly, the Rock & Roll was extremely tasty with both the eel sauce and spicy mayo sauce. (I will say that some people will argue some of the flavor is due to the abundant sauce) Regardless, with the shrimp tempura and spicy tuna wrapped within, it was like biting into your second dark chocolate chip cookie that came straight out the oven. Because IKKO is a couple blocks off the center of downtown Silver Spring, I don't generally make it down here. Yep, apparently I'm that walk-phobic. But all that might be changing! I hadn't yet found a sushi spot in the area that I'd call myself a fan of, and maybe it's time I stop settling for sushi I don't really even like for the sake of convenience. IKKO is casual and pleasant, with two walls of windows. They're on the corner of a little strip mall kind of thing, tucked away on the bottom level of what's either apartments or offices, not sure which. The servers were super nice and didn't judging me for repeatedly dropping my chopsticks and snagging all my replacements off the surrounding tables. I only had a spicy tuna roll here, but it was fresh and tasty with a good portion of fish, and the wasabi was fresh, too. The miso soup hit the spot, too, and wasn't too salty. This already beats some other area options. I will say that the famed DC Monument Roll is not really for me. I came there on a Sunday (they recently started opening on Sundays) and it was empty... but they were hot on Yelp... so we wanted to eat there! We were sooo sooo sooo pleasantly surprised. We had the Las Vegas rolls along with 3 other types of rolls (I don't remember their names) and the owner gave us complimentary tempura, miso soup, and edamame. We came on a Thursday so we were fine but if you come on the weekend you probably need a reservation- although we came with a Groupon and I don't think you can use it on the weekend. My favorite sushi experience in the DC area since Yamazato's! From the moment we stepped in to the moment we left its doors, the service and food was just impeccable. We were kind of worried that with the aftermath of the Pepcoplypse, they would not be open (the shopping center across the street was dark) but they were! For a Friday night, the place was not crowded at all. We were seated right away. Unlike most sushi restaurants, you aren't given a pad and pencil where you can tick what items you want. The menu only highlighted the sushi rolls, but I am sure you can get sashimi too. We ordered the following: - Sashimi Regular My sister ordered this. Came with melt-in-your-mouth salmon, yellowfin tuna, white tuna, and a sushi flower that was red snapper! I love red snapper. It is my favorite fish to order but not many places carry it. - DC Monument Roll Everyone needs to try this at least once. It is a monstrosity of a roll. A tower of roll, about the diameter of a coffee cup. It is so large that they give you a fork to eat it with. Once you decide how to divide and conquer it, it falls apart immediately. Then it looks kind of nasty when everything mixes together but it's quite tasty. - Spider Roll I love soft shell crab and am always disappointed in spider rolls, but they cooked the crab just right. Light and crunchy. Two claws up! - 007 Roll I only got this because my boyfriend is a James Bond geek. Simple shrimp and avocado roll. For three people, including an 18-year-old boy, we were able to feast for $66, which included two Kirin beers. You even get salad and miso soup, too. Just the right amount of food without getting the -itis. Our server was a tall boy who looks not much older than my brother but he was spot-on with the service and is very sweet. Parking is available next door. We had difficulty finding the place, but as other people mentioned, look for the LED marquee. It's located down a ways from NOAA. They do not have a bathroom here, but will give you a key that you can use the restroom in the main lobby of the apartment complex they're housed in. My husband and I went for dinner here on a Tuesday night. We arrived shortly after 6pm to find the restaurant mostly empty, but it filled up over the next 30 minutes ago. Our server was very nice and she was good about refilling our water glasses. We ordered the Fire Mussels appetizer, the DC Monument Roll, the Noaa Roll, and a California Roll. The mussels were a little chewy but it was easy to see past that because they arrived on a flaming platter and the stuff piled on top of them was amazing. The DC Monument Roll was also a big hit. Note that a fork and knife are necessary in order to eat this concoction. My only complaint is that we were seated at a table for two near the cashier, and the takeout customers kept hovering near my elbow while I was trying to devour the delicious sushi. Oh my goodness, I LOVE this place. Delicious food!! Incredibly portions for very reasonable prices. $4.99 for seaweed or avocado salad. GIANT portions. Literally 2 whole large avocados sliced up real nice, atop a light bed of chopped romaine. Special sauce was basically spicy mayo and what reminded me of Halal white sauce. Salmon Tataki (seared salmon) holy fatty delicious fish. A good 8 THICKLY cut salmon slices that basically fell apart in the softest, most tender, delicious way. The edges were seared and a little crispy and sesame seeded. Mochi dessert came with two big mochi portions! Miso was complimentary with dinner meal. We got there a little before 430 and waited outside on a really nice day (well actually, it was a pretty tempermental weather day but we stayed outside in the sunshine for a little) and the owner saw us from inside and came out to ask if we were there for dinner once they opened. Very attentive service! A little too much actually. Well meaning I'm sure but almost too attentive - made me feel a little rushed - until we made it clear that we were going to take our sweet sweet time and we'd call her over when we were ready... This place was listed as one of the places that was "Hot on Yelp" but in the end, I felt a little disappointed... The restaurant is in the lobby of a nice office building with a fountain just outside nextdoor. The ambiance is clean and bright at lunchtime, but when I came, it wasn't all that busy for a place that is "Hot." Since I was exploring this place on my own, I sat down near the counter adjacent to the small sushi bar (area)... The DC Monument Roll is just an over glorified California roll -- not even because there's no nori (seaweed) in it. Its about the size of a soup can standing on edge. Its got a lot of rice and imitation crabmeat in it, some avocado, and some roe on top. I was told that it has 5 different kinds of sauce on it, some sweet, some spicy, although I cannot remember exactly what they are (mango sauce, peanut sauce, ...) The taste is alright, but I am so over it after the first couple of bites. I just can't get excited over California rolls anymore, and just because it's monstrously big, doesn't necessarily make it any better. I'm sorry, but the reviewers who gush over this are probably the ones who gush over California rolls too, come on, really?.... The Chirashi bowl is acceptable but a little ordinary. The fish that is used is nothing out of the ordinary: tuna, salmon, hamachi, albacore, ebi shrimp, tamago egg, and some imitation crab. I love chirashi and I would have to say that I was a little disappointed in this... Btw, if you happen to need to use the washroom, you need to obtain the pass key from them. The washrooms are actually on the ground floor of a business building... The prices are just slightly high, but that's probably because there isn't enough competition in the area. Ikko Sushi has a cozy and low-key ambiance. We made reservations ahead of time for a party of 4 and I'm glad we did. By the time we sat down and opened up our menus around 7pm the place started to fill up quickly with more patrons. The service is great! Our waiter was very attentive and courteous and the food came out in good time. The sprawling menu had a diverse, unique, and delicious spread of rolls that could satisfy anyone's taste. The fish is fresh and the rolls are delicious and filling! My favorite of the night was the Love Roll which had fried soft-shell crab on the inside. Another thing I loved was how the restaurant and chefs paid homage to Maryland and Montgomery County by naming many of its specialty rolls after local spots in the community such as the Silver Spring Roll and the East-West Highway Roll (we got both of them! They are quite good). Other locally inspired rolls include the Baltimore Roll, Bennington Roll (the Bennington is a luxury apartment complex in Silver Spring), the Blair Roll (A local high school known for its rigorous Math and Science Magnet program), the DC Monument Roll, and the Redskins Roll. Yummm! Fresh sushi and great service! Orders come with a free miso soup and small salad too! We came near the end of the lunch hour on a Thursday and were seated right away. We were unsure of how much to order because the special rolls seemed larger than most and the waitress answered honestly that we should be fine without ordering more food. It's so nice to have a waitress that isn't constantly pushing the up-sell! Also, the menu specifies which rolls come with real crab vs. imitation crab, which is a huge convenience because then you don't have to go through the awk convo with the waitress of "is your crab even REAL here?" which can be moderately offensive to some sushi spots. Came here for Valentine's Day to treat my girlfriend. It was kind of a spontaneous decision and perhaps one of the better ones I've ever made. Probably the best sushi rolls I've ever had. We ordered almost all of the special rolls their menu had to offer. There was no way we were gonna finish everything, but it all sounded so good I couldn't choose just a few. Nonetheless we loved every bite. One particular roll had this white tuna that literally just melted in your mouth. Everything was just so fresh and absolutely delicious. The presentation was equally outstanding. The place itself is located in some kind of apartment residence or hotel building. Not a big restaurant, has a nice cozy feel to it. "Two deluxe sushi combos? How many people are you serving?" So said the man on the other end of my phone-in take out order. "uuuhhhh ... Two." I sheepishly replied. "One sushi combo will be more than enough for two people," the employee of Ikko politely replied. And so began what I hope to be a good relationship with our neighborhood sushi place - Ikko. I love good sushi, but I also tremendously appreciate good service. Our first attempt at Ikko was off to a great start from this first phone call and just got better and better. Ikko's somewhat strange location (base floor of an apartment building) is made up for by it's great service and delicious food. Don't expect gourmet sushi here (this place is inexpensive), but do expect top notch mid-range sushi and rolls that will make you wanting to come back for more. We found the salmon and tuna nigiri to be excellent, along with the spicy tuna roll, which could hold it's own against any overpriced Dupont Circle option. We're definitely going to make Ikko a part of our regular routine. If you haven't tried this place yet, you certainly should! read more

This place is a solid 3.5 stars. Ever since I moved to silver spring, I have spent many week day evenings getting dinner here by myself - that is one thing I love about this place - it is inviting enough to the point where I can just come and chill here for a bit, have a chat with the sushi chef and not feel weird about it lol. Service I have to say, is always awesome. The sushi chef always smiles when he sees me and he now knows I'm a sucker for anything crunchy and hamachi, lol. Now as far as the food itself goes - the sashimi is awesome, the fish is always fresh, and the knife cuts are beautiful. I have shared a chirashi bowl with a friend a couple of times and it was great. The rolls however I think leave a lot to be desired when it comes to taste. Visually, they are beautifully presented, but taste wise I'm not a very big fan. I have tried a wide assortment of their rolls and honestly, I think they are all a little over priced and a little over hyped! But the sashimi is great, all food comes with soup and salad which is pretty yummy and then a side of fruit for dessert. Honestly, I still come here very frequently and will keep doing so, but at the end of the day, compared to some other places I have seen, Ikko is fairly main stream and average. read more

I'll always go on the hunt for good sushi and with a place for 4 stars this was surely an adventure. I trekked all the way to Silver Spring and was surprised when I got there and IKKO Sushi was nowhere to be found. Had Yelpers forgot to update the address? No that couldn't be. I circled around 2 or 3 times before realizing this restaurant was literally hidden away in a what appeared to be a residential complex. You can barely see the sign while driving and forget about easy parking (I just parked at the garage a couple blocks away). Already in an annoyed mood I was happy with the attention the waitress and staff gave us upon entering---this could be because we were two of four people in the entire restaurant---but I'll take friendly service where it comes. Overall the food was just "okay" the sushi wasn't anything special and some of the flavors didn't "gel"---I wouldn't go out of my way to come back here, the soup was small, the salad even smaller, and the appetizers tasted like frozen delights. If restaurants could survive on only good service alone this place would be striving but I think the bland, small portions are what's keeping people at bay. read more

The Tekka Don tuna was good and thinly sliced with a decent portion size, but the sushi rice needs more flavor. The sashimi was the most disappointing part of the meal. While the thick slices of sashimi looked inviting, it was obvious that the fish was frozen. The fish was very cold, and when we bit into it the sashimi was watery without flavor. Not worth the price. Sweet lady: people like the Love roll which has soft shell crab and dragon roll Me: Oh ok, can you scratch the spider roll then and add that plus the dragon roll Sweet lady: For how many people? Me: for one Sweet lady: oh nooo, it's too much for one person. Try the love roll and dragon roll. Next time, you can try dc monument. Me: (laughs) ok, I will do that. Anyways, it was 40 minutes later before I could pick up and when I did, the sweet little lady took one look at me and said you're so small, how could you eat three rolls?! LOL, I guess she hasn't seen me eat when I'm hungry. She was super friendly though and all smiles. The rolls were delish and definitely hit the spot. I didn't prefer the love roll because of the tuna so will try the spider next time although I do prefer the breading to be a little crispier. Not too big of a deal. Looking for an amazing sushi place and was so happy to find IKKO. Located in a nice modern community it is tucked away like a modern hole in the wall. Walked in and immediately greeted and given options to sit. Sat at the sushi bar and the chefs greeted us as well. Atmosphere was very modern and very relaxing. We were immediately enticed by all the wonderful art--which was the ordered sushi going to their hungry patrons. The sushi tastes amazing, portion size and cost equally amazing. The chef gave us unlimited amount of siracha which we were so grateful since we love spicy food. Cannot say enough good things about our experience. The management team says goodbye to everyone which is so pleasant since it makes you feel a part of their family. I don't know what happened. This has been my go to sushi spot in the DMV for years. I was so excited when I moved back recently after living out of state for a couple of years to come back and get my sushi fix. My boyfriend and I and decided to order a big sushi boat for take out. The only difference we noticed when we came to pick up was the usual manager/owner Stacey does not seem to work there anymore, or maybe she retired (well earned if she did, she is one of the hardest working people I've ever seen!). The sushi chefs have also changed. This may explain why, despite our $60 check, we were not given our complimentary soup and salad. When we asked for it, we were told we'd have to pay extra $.25 for each take out container... That already put me in a bad mood, but I didn't say anything, being eager to get home and stuff my face with delicious sushi. However, when we got home, we found the sushi was subpar, to say the least--I mean, no where near the quality we have had there in the past. I might also add that we both have pretty high standards, particularly my boyfriend, who lived in japan for many years and goes there for work still for months at a time. The fish was not fresh and kind of soggy, like they'd sat too long in the vinegar, and the pieces were small. The unagi had the tiniest dot of eel sauce on them. Even at the worst sushi places I've gone to, I've never seen such sad looking unagi. Then I found a hair in my soup, the lettuce in the salad was not fresh, and the dressing was different than what it used to be (read: not so great). Overall, a heartbreaking, disappointing experience. I've been a loyal customer of Ikko for many years and it has a lot of sentimental value. It's where my boyfriend and I had our first date! But sadly, I probably won't be back for a long while. read more

For a good minute now, I've been on a mission to find quality sushi spots. After going here, this is one of my favorites. I had the Philadelphia roll and the shrimp nigiri - which was everything. I also made it a point to try some of their ramen; however, I did not think their ramen was everything (the soy broth didn't really taste like soy broth to me). But I'm willing to look past that and give IKKO a 4-star rating because their sushi and miso soup are delicious. Also, I really like the ambiance. It's clean and it's definitely a place where you can sit down and eat with friends. The service was very good, and their prices were also reasonable. I'll be coming back here very soon. read more

Currently a groupon out for this place and if I were you I would go grab it now. This sushi restaurant is probably one of the better ones in the Rockville and Silver Spring area. The atmosphere is cozy, but take heed. If you are loud the rest of the restaurant will know. The sushi is here is pretty good. The fish was flavorful and the rolls were creative. I know people say that sushi rolls are made with bits and pieces, but who cares as long as it tastes good right? Only downside to this place is you have to pay for parking in the area and it can be inconvenient depending on what time you go. As long as you are patient with the traffic you should be fine. read more

I just had to give them a try, given that I was across the street for a Yelp event and the Silver Sprung parking conundrum was already taken care of. Not too impressed with the service, as traffic was light at 5PM on a Sunday. I went for the Deluxe Chirashi and my usual Kirin Ichiban. Miso soup was thin and vaguely metallic; I did not finish it. Salad and edamame were standard. I was not pleased with the upgrade, as surimai and tomago were included. They and the shrimp were pretty bland, as was the bed of rice. The salmon roe was OK, but the other glob turned out to be gochujang (Korean bean and hot pepper paste) rather than another seafood. Excellent on galbi or bulgogi, or hwe dup bap (Korean take on chirashi), no place in Japanese sushi. Snapper was OK, tuna was OK, salmon, white tuna, and yellowtail were very good and rescued them from Meh. The only vegetable was a single thick slice of cucumber. Doubt I'll be back. Maybe the maki fans will have better luck. read more

I live up the street and decided to walk here one day. So glad I did because I love this place! I've been here a few times and have had a wide variety of rolls.
