I'm really disappointed by my experience this morning. I've lived in the neighborhood for over a decade, and my fiancé and I have been loyal customers for years. We often bring visiting family and friends here for breakfast and pastries, and we even pick up pastries to bring out to the island for Sunday dinners and holidays. We were also planning to order our wedding pastries from here later this year, which makes this even more upsetting. This morning, I arrived at 0654 and I waited outside in cold, muggy weather until the 0700 opening. There were no signs posted about holiday hours, and nothing online indicated a different opening time. A few minutes after 0700, I asked the man at the counter whether they were opening at 0700 or 0800, and he told me it would be 0800. I understood and was willing to come back later. I quickly ran to another store and was walking back home around 0710. As I walked by, I saw a woman run in and be served right away. The same employee who had just told me they weren't open was now helping her, boxing up pastries and sending her on her way. I went inside and asked if I could place an order as well, but I didn't get a clear response. At that point, I was so upset that I just grabbed a 2lb pre-wrapped plate of cookies and left. I completely understand having holiday hours and I was happy to come back at 0800. But being turned away, only to see someone else immediately helped moments later, felt unfair and disrespectful. It's also hard to ignore the possibility that bias may have played a role. As a queer-presenting person, being turned away while a more traditionally feminine-presenting customer was immediately welcomed and helped did not sit right with me. I truly hope that wasn't the case, but the experience left me feeling uncomfortable and unwelcome. read more

Stopped into Il Fornaio for a coffee and a rainbow cookie. The inside is clean and has a cute photo-op corner. The service was quick and efficient. I ordered a Nutella coffee and a rainbow cookie. The rainbow cookies here are really well done! If you don't like rainbow cookies, I think you should try one from here. The coffee was fine, nothing special but not bad either. Overall, a cute spot. I haven't had many of their varieties of pastries, but I will say Il Fornaio has the best rainbow cookies I've ever had in NYC! I feel like most places, the jam kinda disappears into the cookie, but at this place you taste the amazing layers of cake and jam! In the mood for some Italian cookies, I picked up a little box from here. I ordered a couple each of the kinds I liked which came to 6 cookies and 6 pcs of rainbow cookies. Total was $14.89 which seemed a little pricey. The butter cookies were OK. The ones with apricot and raspberry jam & sprinkles were solid. But the round ones with a jam center were not good. A lot of reviews said they had the best rainbow cookies and I'd have to disrespectfully disagree. The almond flavor was far too overpowering. The chocolate to cake ratio was off. Far too much chocolate for how thin the rainbow layers were. Same for the jam, too much for the layers. If they thicken the layers, then these might be perfect. OK bakery. The desserts look at taste just as good, however, I gave them 4 stars because my coffee (americano) tasted burnt. Plenty of indoor seating and plenty of desserts to choose from, including Halloween themed desserts. Disappointed...I was really craving a muffin for breakfast, and when I walked into the bakery, the carrot cake muffin immediately caught my eye. It looked great -- I was excited. Unfortunately, that excitement didn't last. When I got to the office and sat down to eat, I discovered the muffin was hard on the outside, didn't taste anything like carrot, and worst of all -- the inside was still raw batter. This spot has been around forever & I stopped in the other day after forever lol. Interior changed a lot since the last time I stopped in, which was several years ago. I remember not liking whatever pastry I got back then so never came back ..but was in the mood for something sweet and didn't want to go too out of the way. I ordered a choc donut & apple fritter. When I got home I heated up the fritter for 8 seconds. It was the best apple fritter I think I've ever had! Some don't even have apples in it but this one had some apple chunks in the middle. I was pleasantly surprised that this was not another overrated place from TikTok. I was so happy to find this place near by Airbnb in Astoria. They have a huge selection of sweet and savory baked goods and other breakfast and sandwich/deli items. Plenty of drinks, too. I ordered an iced latte a few times and the large size is ample (24 oz, I think) and they use good Italian espresso so it actually tastes like coffee. The pastries I tried were all great, especially the macarons. I also had an omelette and it was huge and had tons of veg mixed in. I ordered two cakes from here recently and I was so impressed by the quality and flavor. I needed a cake last minute and in just 2 days, the chefs here were able to whip up a 2 layer cake that fed 50+ people. I requested a winnie the pooh themed cake and they were able to make a design similar to one of the pictures I sent. The cake was delicious, it was dulce de leche and canoli cream. The price was actually pretty reasonable too. I was expecting double what I paid since it was so last minute but they didn't try to overcharge me. While I was paying for m order, I decided to add a small carrot cake. Everyone at the event was raving about the cakes, especially the dulce de leche one. Upon entering, the interior was clean with a rustic vibe where several tables filled with patrons. Opened in 2011, Il Fornaio Bakery does its own baking on the premises, which includes cakes, cookies, and pastries. One of Il Fornaio's specialties is their rainbow pastry, layered with cannoli cream and iced in chocolate for a triple treat. They also feature sandwiches, which we decided on: Astoria Park (honey turkey, pepper Jack cheese, mustard/mayo), Queensborough (turkey, bacon, lettuce, tomato), and Ditmars Blvd (salami, provolone cheese, soppresata). I found this bakery through Instagram while trying to find someone who could replicate a custom heart cake my friend wanted for her birthday. The bakery was very responsive via DMs and confirmed they were able to replicate the photo. From ordering to pickup, the process was very smooth and convenient and the bakery itself was clean and had a lot of amazing desserts at time of pickup that I was dying to come back and try. There was an outdoor seating area if you wanted to grab a treat and relax. The service was great - I arrived at their pick up time and did not have to wait. The cake itself had a Nutella layer flavor - DELICIOUS! Two things to note: 1. The bakery has two locations, both within a few blocks distance. The 33-14 30 Ave location is the pickup location for custom cakes. My Apple Maps only showed the other location so the worker provided the address for the second location over the phone. 2. Be mindful of the occasion if you are purchasing a black cake. Maybe a given - but it did stain lips after a slice which is good to be conscious of if you are taking photos after the cake cutting/eating. Overall, the cake was a steal for $80 in relation to other businesses who quoted $180+. read more

When you walk into this bakery, prepare to stand a good 5 minutes just looking at all the incredible creations in the display cases . I ventured here to pick up a croissant. They sell an amazing multigrain with a delicious cappuccino. I returned to pick up some other delicacies . A Nutella cupcake, a Peanut butter cupcake a Napoleon pastry. Bought a couple more cakes from them: - Berry Napoleon: loved the slice that I got from them before, so I got a whole cake and it was soggy! It was such a disappointment, and a sign that I should sometimes trust my eyes. - Rainbow Cookie Cake: I wasn't a big fan, but I'm not a big fan of the rainbow cookies and the almond flavoring, so not really a fault of the cake. - Oreo Cake (small $16): I thought this was just okay in terms of flavor and texture. It wasn't as moist as I expected, and too much cream vs. oreo ratio for my liking. I wouldn't get it again. - Carrot Cake (big $30): I surprisingly enjoyed this way more than the oreo cake. The cream cheese frosting was flavorful, but not too rich and the cake itself was moist with some chew texture and gentle spices. I think I might go for this again! I would also advise asking for prices ahead of time, and making sure that they punch in the correct prices since cakes can range in prices and sometimes they have made a mistake. I came here for breakfast for the first time. Sometimes their cakes can be dry/taste a little stale. Hoping their fresh made sandwiches would be good. I was the first person before the wave of crowd of people came this morning. I ordered a toasted bacon, egg and cheese on a roll. I was wondering who was working on my order - the cashier lady acted dumb like that guy was working on it and then that girl was working on it. But I just see all employees busy packing a women's order who came in 3 people after mines. Bad communication. And she then had this attitude and stare down that she didn't do my order and had to ask me what was my order. She recommended it to me to the first place! Just making herself sound like she was in the right... and My order came late after 6 people. Now I have another reason not to come here. I gave 3 stars because the customer service is very iffy. The food and aesthetic is always great, fresh 90% of the time, coffee bar is great too. The people in the front are personable and ready to help. But for some reason, whoever answers the phone for receiving orders, is definitely NOT friendly. I have called on multiple occasions over the past year, for birthdays, weeks in advance for a holiday, even to do something for a work event. But literally, I've decided to go elsewhere for those special days simply because whoever answers the phone, always has an attitude like they don't want to be sitting there taking your order. There's been instances where I've requested the owner, Marco, call me back and its tricky. When he answers, he is great and makes your bakery wishes come true. But if he doesn't, which is often, then you're stuck communicating with whoever that lady is. Another thing is somehow, they keep getting something wrong? -For example, this past June my godparents bought a cake for my cousins graduation party. The cake was great but 1 they were delivering to the venue and were late and 2 THEY WENT TO THE WRONG LOCATION, making them later than they were initially. -Another example, my good friend ordered a birthday cake for her 5yr old son last fall and they requested "royal blue" and they received "baby blue". -Another instance, we ordered holiday bread with ham and cheese last Christmas, and we received bread with nothing inside. We were accommodated later that evening when they then made the bread we requested. -Another occasion, this past August, we ordered a strawberry shortcake anniversary cake for my godparents and they promised that the strawberries would be fresh. The outside was amazing but when we sliced it, the inside literally has strawberry jam and not one real strawberry. After these occasions we made a choice... I will always stop by for something quick like coffee, pastry or smoothie but if I am ordering for an event of sorts, I will definitely reconsider coming here. read more

Unfortunately they are not vegan friendly, but they are affordable for office parties and I get so many compliments when I bring these as gifts. Ate here today for lunch by myself during my lunch break while working full time and across the street as a teacher assistant at The 30th Avenue School (Q300). I had brought and ate the "Ditmars Blvd" roll with tiramisu and a bottle of apple juice. It was great and delicious. The service there was also great and attentive that I didn't feel rushed about what to choose a sandwich to try for the first time. I couldn't agree more.
