Had to get a blowout last minute due to an event and this place was close and had availability. Website said blowout prices starting at 45 so I went in. Place is spacious and clean. The quality of the blowout was fine and looked good, but they ended up charging me $80, almost double the price just for extra length. Some of the nail pics in other reviews made me super wary of this place, so I've been driving down to South Riding to get my nails done even though Illusions would be so much more convenient for me as it's in the Brambleton Town Center. Today, I finally decided to bite the bullet and give Illusions a shot, and I'm so glad I did! My appointment for a gel manicure and regular pedicure with Tina was at 1pm, and I got there a few minutes early. We picked out polishes and then started the pedicure before moving on to the manicure. I was there for about 100 minutes total (some of the reviews said three hours, so I was relieved). Tina is METICULOUS and so nice. She has been doing nails for 30 years, and it shows! She was able to recommend what would look best, my cuticles look amazing, and the pedicure didn't even tickle me like it normally does. I paid $70 for both, and tips are cash only. This is not the place for an upscale, pampering spa day--it could use some updating, instruments didn't come in sterilized peel packs, etc.--but the price is right for a standard and high-quality mani/pedi. read more

I have full but very fine hair which is both extremely challenging to color for many reasons. Nahid excels at getting the color perfect...EVERY time. I came in for a basic manicure and pedicure and it was not very good. From the start, I noticed some issues. My friend had scheduled appointments for us, without realizing there is only one nail technician here. We didn't mind having different appointment times though. When I arrived for my appointment (scheduled an hour after my friend's), the technician was not ready for me. I was thinking she had to finish my friend's nails, but she hadn't done her pedicure yet or finished her nails... Most everything here just felt rushed. It was strange because the services took a long time, but the quality was that with half the effort, rushed and not giving full quality. The salon area was not very clean, with tools and supplies strewn about randomly. The technician that did my nails wore gloves but got up and touched several surfaces in the middle of my pedicure. The manicure/pedicure were decent but the polish quality and application just were not good. The polish color was gorgeous but it was bumpy had a rough application. I suspect old nail polish but I am not sure. After my manicure, I looked at my cuticles and was shocked at how bad they looked; really disappointed since I always come out of nail services with the basics like that done perfectly! My friend was also not satisfied with her SNS. She expressed concern during the service but was ignored, resulting in wonky tips, uneven application, and bumpy texture. Her pedicure was rushed and she was not able to get the service she asked for. We made our appointments ahead of time with notice of the services we wanted and we did not mind waiting, but it was just not worth the time spent in this salon. DO NOT GO THERE! GOT CHEMICAL BURNS ON MY SCALP! Long story short: I went in to bleach my hair and ended up with painful chemical burns all over my scalp. I went Illusions Salon to get my hair all bleached to white. My stylist was Brian. I've bleached my hair and my roots before so I know what to expect and to be clear, I never had a bad reaction to bleach before. The appointment for the most part went okay. One warning sign was that he piled up a lot of bleach directly on my scalp/roots and left it for quite too long, which may have caused the damage. However, when I came home I noticed the chemical burns all over my scalp. They were on top of, on the sides, and at the back of my head. There were red blisters, yellow and brown gunk and crust, and some parts were broken. Some parts were even oozing with white liquid (same puss that's in the pimples!) I attached the photos. They are also taking a very long time to heal. It's been a week or two and they still haven't gone away, they are still all over my head. These chemical burns are a serious medical injury that requires care and attention. It causes a very high risk of an infection. I am currently seeking care from a doctor to treat them. I texted Brian the photos of the burns and explained my situation with the chemical burns, asking for a refund. Brian behaved extremely unprofessional. He didn't offer any apology and didn't even awknowledge the chemical burns. Instead of an apology and awknowledging the problem, he said how the appointment took a long time and it was MY fault for not speaking up during the appointment. He also did not want to give a full refund at first. That was incredibly rude. If you make a mistake, you should awknowledge it and apologize for it, and offer some reimbursement (refund or treatment). As a hair stylist, you yourself are responsible for customer's safety and should know how to use dangerous chemicals properly. So the way that Brian acted was incredibly unprofessional and disrespectful. He is unqualified to do both hair and be the manager. Thankfully I did receive the refund I attached screenshots of the message with the stylist and photos of the scalp burns (there were many more). Please avoid this salon at all costs! I reccomend instead going to Noufal Color Studios in Tyson's, they are very professional and have never done any damage. read more

I was able to get a same-day appointment with Illusions and visited the salon where I was immediately greeted and taken to a station. My stylist was Susan and she was very meticulous and careful with my hair. I let my hair grow out so I can have some flexibility in my style and Susan cut it with a casual/professional look that matched me perfectly. I tried this small salon in Brambleton hoping for a good experience. I think it is a better place for a guy. More like a barber shop. Only 2 chairs. No one else in salon but me and a lady sweeping up. Guy started off telling me assumptions about my hair that weren't true. Wrong color. Shampoo was very rough, water down my back. And he stopped in between cutting my hair to answer the phone a few times. I left wet. He charged top dollar. And asked for a tip but I didn't think you were supposed to tip the owner. Told me he would fix color when I said I didn't like it. I called two days later and said I wanted a redo, and the lady who answered said no.... To try it for two weeks and let it fade it would be fine. What? So be ugly for 2 weeks and you'll like it later. I told him I didn't want that color to start. That's not right. I wish I could get my money back. Paid over $100 for that kind of service? I ended up buying a box of blonde to put my own highlights in just to stand looking in the mirror and being seen til I found another stylist/salon and a time I could get away from work. Not cool. I'm not even going to give any stars on this establishment. I had a gel pedicure and manicure with dip powder appointment for 11am today. It took the nail tech 3 hours to do my nails and was horrible! Worst manicure I've ever had done and it turned out horrible. I've never had to be at a salon for 3 hours for the same services! I told her i had a doctor's appointment at 2pm and needed to leave by 1:15 or 1:30 at the latest. I didn't get out of there until 2pm and my nails were still wet, even with blow drying them for 10 minutes, which I've never had to do before with a dip manicure and I still have marks in the polish! So disgusted with the service. And the equipment in the nail area was old, didn't work and the fabric was ripped on the chairs. The place just seemed so run-down. The tech was very disorganized and i believe now that she doesn't know what she's doing as I've never had it done that way before. So many steps seemed to be missed. Then add insult to injury in that I was charged $107 for this hot mess! If I wasn't running so late I would have stayed to complain more but honestly it didn't seem anyone was interested as they heard me saying I needed to leave. I will never go here again!!!! read more

So I went to Brian based on his amazing reviews and a friend's recommendation. I was really excited to get more dimension with lowlights. He was very thorough and I love his haircut. The color is very disappointing. It has less dimension and is very white blond and not like the two pictures I showed. After 3 hours and $285 I was so sad. He offered to fix it but honestly it is so far off that I am too nervous. Today after waiting 4 days to see if it would grow on me I went in and asked for the money back for just the color, not the cut. They said no. Again, everybody was so nice including Brian and Tina who did a great job on my eyebrows. I made an appointment with Illusions Hair Salon & Spa after bringing my daughter to this salon for her haircut. I needed a haircut, color and partial hi light. While the stylist who worked on my hair was very kind, I believe that she may have been new to the salon and she did not speak English. Looking back, I think I should have requested a manager or another employee help translate for us although even then, based on the results I am not sure that that would have mattered. To be quite clear, I was not pleased with the results. The hi light and color treatment ended up breaking my hair and the color and hi light was applied about an inch from the root which was not the style I was asking for. I was also devastated that my hair was literally fried from this color treatment. Six months later my hair is still recovering from this stylist's work on my hair. I did call the salon to let them know what happened so that they could work with that stylist to ensure that this does not happen to another customer. Unfortunately, I had to have my hair cut off to restore strength and I was unable to have my hair properly colored for six months. Be sure that you know who the stylist is that is working on your hair and be careful when asking for a hi light at this salon. read more

I was nervous about getting a haircut at Illusions after reading some of the reviews. However, the salon agreed to take a same day appt., which I appreciated. I told them I just wanted a trim. I ended up seeing Nahid and when she saw my hair, she recommended that I get 2 inches cut off. She suggested long layers. I was still unsure, but she did a fantastic job on the haircut and blow dry/styling. My hair looks great! It looks so much healthier and I've gotten a ton of compliments. read more

I called Illusions and they said they can give me the same special as my regular place - which is half off the toner (from $50 to $25) with a cut. Great. Cut was quoted at $55. So all together I was expecting a bill of $75. Grace did the cut and toner. Both services were fine. When I went to pay, the lady at the front said it was $130. WHAT?! When I told her the girl on the phone quoted me a different price she acted like I was lying. The lady said it's $65 for cut and $65 for toner. Not sure where these prices suddenly came from. She didn't bother to call the girl that was working yesterday and just completely dismissed me. If you're planning to have a business in Brambleton, get your act together. I scheduled an appointment for two people, me at 4:30pm and my friend 5:30. I got a full set of sns took her more than 30 minutes to glue the tips on and some of them were Lopsided/crooked. I asked her to fix it and she said they were fine and not to worry about it. Also not to mention the shape was supposed to be coffin shape.... She finally finishes my nails around 5:50pm. Meanwhile my friend is waiting because she is the only nail technician available. My friend got a regular pedicure and her cuticles looked terrible, nail polish was all over her nails. After she finishes her nails, the nail technician then started criticizing my toes saying they're short and I couldn't get a French done on my toes, so I said ok I understand I then ask her to do gel she says no because there wasn't enough time, so I settle toe regular polish. She didn't scrub the bottom of my feet very well. I was so disappointed and unhappy with the service I spoke to the manager telling him I was unhappy with my nails...no apology, nail technician telling me I'm wrong, they ended up giving me a $10 discount but if it was my choice I wouldn't have paid at all. These nails were $60 they do not look like $60 nails, I could've done better myself. Extremely disappointed with the service, cleanliness and staff. This review score is completely based on the nail service of dip nails. I have not had any other services other than gel mani and regular pedi (which were fine but same or better elsewhere for cheaper) I moved to the area and live extremely close. Yayy potential for a regular! After a couple visits of the usual pedi and gel mani (which were great [5 stars]), I decided to try out the dip nail manicure, as I hear it is more durable than gel and better for your nail beds. It did not go so well.... The woman doing my nails (same as always, I believe named Tina) was not happy with her job so she asked me if I had time so she could redo them. Awesome! The dip nails are supposedly better than gel; do not chip, better for your nail beds and last just as long/longer. Six days later, I had 2 nails that chipped. The following day I had 5 more nails chip. My $50 dip nail manicure lasted less than a week. l called to tell them 1 week from my service that I was not happy and they appologized and had me reschedule to get them redone (I have pics). Unfortunately, I could not get in for about another week due to my work schedule and availability of open hours (13 days from when I received the original service). At that point (today), I had 1 nail that completely came off and 7 other nails were noticeably chipped (with 4 of them majorly chipped!).. That's right only 2 nails were still good out of 10... my right middle finger and left index finger. I went in for my redo and she had me wash my hands this time... However, she did not push my cuticles back. Hello, I know it has been almost 2 weeks (cuticles needed help), but I have pictures from a week ago of the crap job that was done the first time. That is not my fault and that I could not get in during business hours until I did! I would expect everything to be redone!!... not just the "polish change", so you could say. (it's not polish... she told me last time: when you get them done; they are taken off like gel, and not filled in like acrylic [even though it is acrylic, just a different recipe so it doesn't stink and "healthier" for you nails]) I wanted clear color. I told her if it happened again at least it would be less noticable. When she was applying the top coat of my first hand I said this isn't clear. She said it is a little pink. I wish I would have taken a picture of it because I said no this is white with a little pinkish in it, like for a French manicure. She told me it's more white for a French manicure (like the mattered because I said I wanted clear). She asked me if I had time again and took it all off and started over to give me the clear that I asked for the first time. Kudos to her for finally making it look good this time because they were way different, even though there was no color this time. I told her that it looked like she had practiced because when I had the original service, I found out (when almost completed) that it was her first time doing dip nails on a client. (let's just say 1 hand had looked thicker than the other and before that end result, that hand "was not taking" to the powder... [um what?]) Anyway crap star rating for the time that I have spent doing this three times and we will see how satisfied I am in a week if they start chipping again. I will not be back. If you are going to offer a service and not know what you're doing, at least let me know I'm a guinea pig and not have to pay full price. I would be fine with that. read more

I am very satisfied with my recent visit at Illusions. Brian is a true hair artist! He did a phenomenal job with a balayage color I requested for my long hair. My hair was a mess with multiple colors going (from another place) it didn't phase him and he was up to the challenge to fix it. From the moment he started to work on my hair, I knew his technique and approach was very different (in a positive way) from my previous experiences. Not only did he correct the color he delivered beautiful and very natural shades as the end result. He took his time to analyze and even test some strips on my hair to make sure he will get it right like the picture I showed him. He is very precise, and did an outstanding job. This was my first time going to a salon since moving to Virginia in 2018. My hair had grown out and was all one color and I was just bored with it. So I took a plunge and decided that I was going to bleach my hair and get a trendy rose gold toner added for some fun. My stylist was very pleasant and we got started early on Sunday morning. I learned that highlight foils and face masks can make a person feel a little claustrophobic but it was pleasant none the less. Once we washed my hair is when my issues started coming up, the stylist started to brush my hair really hard while it was still soaking wet! My hair tangles easily and I know it can be a bit dramatic sounding sometimes but I could hear what sounded like Velcro being ripped apart in my ear until my hair laid straight. I was almost in tears because of the sound but didn't speak up because we were having some issues communicating through the mask... I felt bad for the lady who came in to help him as she was cleaning up foils and all of the flung bleach and toner that he had covered the workspace with... luckily I was safe under a lot of layers of protective fabric so I wasn't stained or bleached anywhere I wasn't supposed to be. I also didn't get a proper quote at all. The day before I came in and was told to come back the next day as it would be a long process and the lady at the desk asked him to give me a quote and he said he would need to run some numbers and would get back to me the next day at my appointment. I should have asked before I sat in the chair because I was budgeting about $250 and was charged $380. I know hair isn't a cheap thing but I was shocked at how much I was charged. Not to mention that that is the price without a tip, there was no way to tip my stylist even if I had wanted to go out of my way for them. I don't know that I'll come back just because I can't really afford that kind of money and this put me over my self care budget for a bit. read more

I had gone for a blow dry at 6 pm. My stylist did not wash my hair well and did her job hastily. She did not care if the water is splashing out or she is trying to hurt my head by being very harsh during the hair wash. Immediately she started talking about my hair length and charged me for long hair. I agreed to her charge and expected a salon result. My hair was dry and curls did not look neat and clean. In the end she expected me to give her a good tip and worst is that she made it very clear that she needs a tip. The stylist was Grace. It is very disappointing to see people running after money and no customer satisfaction. Please do not go this place. Illusion charges quite high and results are poor and unsatisfactory. Getting the job done and doing the job well are two different things these people should understand. Never coming back! read more

BLONDES BEWARE!!! This is not a salon to go to if you need a root touch up or to brighten your blonde. The stylists do not have enough experience working with blonde and it shows. I was there for 6 hours...6 HOURS!!! And they turned my hair purple..PURPLE!!! Bottled blonde is usually pretty porous so you should know not to leave purple tinted shampoo on for more than a few minutes let alone the brightest purple toner for 30 mins!!! I tried to speak up like this is not how my usual hair stylist does it (who moved 2 hours away, idc I'm going back to him) & was assured not to worry. Oh man, they were going to leave me like that too & said don't worry it'll wash out...oh ok yea I know how it works, but in the meantime I can not go to work with patches of purple all over my hair!!! So I stayed for another 2 hours for them to "correct" it. It felt like straw & I very specifically said I need a protein treatment in the color (they use Olaplex b/c they have a contract & Olaplex sucks big kahuna) so I don't even know if they mixed it in when "correcting it. Also, asked for a deep conditioning treatment, nope just for some "good conditioner". ONE OF THE WORST HAIR EXPERIENCES !!! Outrageous they even charged me for a double process...so they charged me to turn my hair purple hahahahaha this salon is a JOKE!! Purple!!!!!
