I've always liked Terun in Palo Alto, and their restaurant group just opened Impasto in San Carlos near Caltrain (across from the main downtown area). A friend of mine has celiac disease, and I had read Impasto had GF pizza and pasta options, so we decided to check it out. It's not a huge space, so if you can plan ahead, reserve first on Tock (indoor and outdoor available). The menu is pretty similar to Terun in Palo Alto. Drinks: - Calabrian margarita: good kick - pretty spicy - Italian old fashioned: smooth, spirit driven Food: - Fava bean and broccoli rabe: my go to vegetable dish from the Palo Alto location. Served warm and slightly cheesy - Caprese: a fresh mozzarella ball over tomatoes with zucchini noodles - Fichi pizza: this fell into the specialty pizzas category with a special flour for the dough. While I liked the fig and prosciutto, I definitely prefer the traditional dough crust - Nduja pizza: with zucchini - this is my usual pizza at Terun. My friend got the GF version of this and seemed to like it Food came at a good pace, but we had multiple dishes brought to our table that weren't ours. That said, they just opened, and all the staff were so gracious, so service was overall wonderful. I didn't expect it to be so crowded on a random Thursday night at 6pm - they were completely full! I'm glad I made a reservation on Tock (indoor and outdoor available). Had lunch here, food was very good however everything came out at once. Pasta, pizza, salad all at the same time. Not sure what that's about but it meant that by the time we finished the salad course or pasta, the rest of the food was cold. I could tell the pizza ingredients were of good quality, but that's ruined when the cheese is rubbery from cooling down. I tried to take turns with the different dishes but that meant after coming back to the salad, the lettuce was limp. Same goes for the pasta, the pesto started to congeal. I might give this place a second try, but hopefully they can figure out the timing. Service was good, minus the the avalanche of food all at once. read more

Awful, waste of money. It's offensive to call this Italian food. Got the rigatoni, was undercooked not al dente. The cross section of the pasta was literally raw. The pasta sauce tastes like it came straight from a jar from a grocery store. And not even a good one. The portion is ridiculous. Little amount served in a huge plate. Just makes it look like there's even less food. Got San Danielle pizza as well. I expected the prosciutto to be cooked but it was just thrown onto the pizza and was cold. Had a party of 6. They had eggplant Parmesan on the menu but god forbid I wanted a chicken Parmesan. No go, too much for the kitchen to deal with. I ordered only other chicken dish they had. My dinner came 20 minutes after everyone's dinner. The excuse was the machine was down. WTF I was a chef and pan frying was the only way to cook breaded chicken. I ordered a breaded chicken dish. Failed!! The kitchen clearly can't cooked a breaded chicken without a deep fryer. There was more breading than chicken and of course it was dry like beef jerky. Returned it. Tried our parties dishes and the pasta was undercooked and almost cold. Place was busy but I won't go back. Hit and miss I guess. read more

We had been to Terún before and had a great meal but our recent one at Impasto was so delicious and memorable because of the amazing service and hospitality. Everyone was so happy we returned the next evening but they were too busy already. Our food came out quickly and our water glasses were never empty. My daughter said it was the best pasta she's had and we didn't even order from the kids menu, though they asked for the Mickey Mouse shaped cheese pizza for next time. When our youngest was getting too fussy for us to stay for dessert, the owner (need to learn his name next time!) brought delicious ice cream for the kids in a to-go cup which was so thoughtful. Made a reservation not mention anything about sitting in the cold outside! Even the heater was not enough and stopped working couple of times! Hostess was nice so was our server Daniela and busser Joseph. The food, well focaccia was barley ok, eggplant polperte was ok but the grilled Calamari was good and the San Daniele pizza was ok. Espresso martini was good. LoL! I have no issue with raising prices on the menu but adding 3% for the so called Living Wage? I usually add 25% and more tip to the check without even looking at the check! Should I deduct 3% from acceptable 15% tip and leave 12%? LoL they lost my business for good. read more

We went there on opening night after months of patiently waiting for them to open. Impasto did not disappoint. The pizza was superb, the pasta al dente, and the ambience was comforting. Excellent Service and very good pizzas. My only gripe is the noise level of this restaurant. We went on a Wednesday night and it was packed. Due to this, it was extremely loud. We had to shout across the table in order to have a conversation. Perhaps they can install some sound dampeners on the ceiling. I also wish they had a larger beer selection. Drinks, were expensenaive and not really good, one of our drinka was really bitter. Ambiance, its pretty. Service, started off a little slow, but then got into a good rhythm, I wish they have something that they would say this is what we want you to try, or something that will make them stand out. I don't know how I've managed to wait so long to try Terun's delightful "Impasto" restaurant, which we are so lucky to have in our San Carlos community! First timer this week, and my oh my that beet salad is EXCELLENT. I was beyond thrilled to see such a perfectly sized dish loaded full with yummy juicy red beets, paired and dressed deliciously, on a bed of big greens, sprinkled with goat cheese and nuts. I couldn't stop myself from devouring ~ I suspect I'll continue to order this dish so often I might eventually turn into a beet myself! Service / staff were very friendly, kind, helpful, and had lovely energy. I picked up togo but the ambiance inside has definitely and easily convinced me I MUST return to dine inside. We are HUGE Terun and Italico fans so we were very excited to have Impasto a bit closer to home. We came in for lunch the first weekend they were open and had a lovely experience. Aesthetically the restaurant is beautiful inside. You really feel like you have been transported to A different city and are not in sleepy San Carlos. I really miss the days of when restaurants demonstrated exceptional service and hospitality. Impasto excels at both, just like Terun and Italico. Consistency & hiring great staff is a lost art X We started with the fresh made bread in house and herb butter. The bread came out warm and so fresh. The rigatoni was the star of the show. Perfection on so many levels. I can't say enough good things about this restaurant group. We have a lot of great food on the mid Penn now. Impasto Terun and Italico will always be in our rotation. This place is like going to a best restaurant in Florence but much closer to home. A home builder that is working on our house told us about it that they installed an outdoor patio for them and told us that their food was out of this world and encouraged us to go look it up and we did  glad we did, recently opened like a couple of weeks I believe and their food is simply amazing. Its like having the best italian food and hospitality right here.  Was greeted by whom I believe was the owner with an Italian accent and super nice person. Told him our builder recommended us. Reservation is recommended but he sat us down and we had an amazing meal and great service.  Go there before it gets to be one of the busiest around and you would probably have to wait hours to get in. read more

What a wonderful restaurant! Elegantly decor with amazing hard working friendly staff. A true restaurant where you genuinely feel like they are there to serve you and give you everything they have to offer. Wait staff is very knowledgeable on the ingredients and how the food is prepared. We had their pizza and bolognese lasagna. Incredible! The bolognese was layered with warm rich hardy flavors. Eat it slowly to savor it all. We enjoy red wines and they offer a very nice selection. Arrive early because the restaurant stays busy as the night goes on. We had such a fabulous experience our first time here and are eager to return. One of our new favorite places in San Carlos. First, the focaccia bread was to die for, get it. The pesto octopus pasta was perfectly al dente. The pizza (made from the right kind of flour from Italy) was so delicious. The restaurant is beautiful and we enjoyed the outdoor patio. Impasto in San Carlos was a great find! We were looking for someplace new and friend recommened this place. The staff was super friendly and the food was delicious. My wife had the Branzino and said it was cooked perfectly. I opted for the Calabrian Pizza and wow! The spicy sausage with the peppers and mozzarella was amazing. Food and ambiance. Calamarata pasta was so good and pizza, although thin, wasn't crispy but we appreciated the dough. It wasn't burnt like other pizza places in San Carlos. Service was great as well. This new addition to San Carlos deserves praise. Having now visited several times since they opened, I can say the team here consistently turns out high quality food and a positive experience. To be frank, there is a lot of mediocre Italian food in the area that seem to earn inflated ratings, but Impasto actually delivers where many others fall short. While I cannot speak for every menu item, the pizza, pasta, and appetizer dishes I have tried have all been well-executed and largely authentic. Other pluses include a tastefully designed interior, with modern but welcoming decor. And the attention from the service team is nice, especially these days when many other restaurants seem to be running a skeleton crew of overworked staff. Someone from the ownership team appears to be present most of the time, and much of the staff are Italian as well, both of which probably help with operations. The team is obviously putting a lot of effort into making this opening successful and I hope they keep up the momentum! read more

We took our 3 young kids to check out Impasto. We have pretty low expectations for any meal out with 3 little kids but the staff at Impasto was attentive, interested in our kids, and accommodating. Maico went out of his way to make us feel comfortable and special and it's clear how passionate he is about his restaurant. The food was great, and we have a variety of special diets in our family (vegan, dairy allergy, nut allergy). Patio was lively and the kids loved watching the train. We ordered from Impasto to go and unfortunately won't be returning. The food was inedible, cold even though we live 5 mins away. The eggplant was tough and chewy. The Brussel sprouts were mushy and seemed to be reheated, the fries and pizza were horrible. My pizza loving 2 year old wouldn't even eat the Mickey pizza. We had such a lovely first meal at Impasto! Giuseppe introduced himself to us and made us feel so welcome. The beet salad and the grilled romaine salads were both fresh and tasty. The bufala pizza was just as lovely as the pizza at their other restaurant Terun. I think a great kitchen can be measured by the quality of the sides they produce and the broccoli rabe was well cooked and seasoned. We finished with their lovely tiramisu and some amaro.
