Town in San Carlos is always a favorite of ours, and the service was incredible as usual. We ordered our usual favorite, the Steak Diane, but unfortunately it just wasn't as good as it normally is. Maybe it was simply an off night, but the meat was overcooked and a bit tough. The mashed potatoes were also extra creamy--almost more like soup. We did order the tacos as an appetizer, and those were very good. They weren't spicy, which we really liked. Overall, we still love Town and will definitely be back. We had a great lunch at Town with my family. The food was good, the experience was enjoyable, and our lunch bill was over $400. I also left an 18% tip because I believed the service deserved it. After lunch, we decided to order dessert. The dessert came to $14.62, and I paid with a $20 bill. The server returned only $5 in change. My correct change should have been $5.38. What bothered me wasn't the 38 cents--it was the fact that she knowingly kept it without saying a word. When I asked about the missing change, she admitted she knew it wasn't correct but didn't mention it because she didn't have coins. She then said that "if I wanted," she could go upstairs to get the change. She also told me, "We usually round up." I responded that if the restaurant "usually rounds up," then I should have received $6, not $5. Her answer was simply, "No, $5." A restaurant doesn't get to decide to keep part of a customer's change without asking first. That's not "rounding up"--it's short-changing a customer. Whether it's 38 cents or $38, the amount isn't the point. The point is honesty, integrity, and respect. If you don't have the correct change, you communicate that to the customer and let them decide, not make the decision for them. It's disappointing that after spending over $400, leaving an 18% tip, and choosing to order more food, our visit ended with an interaction that showed such poor judgment and lack of professionalism. TOWN had such a vast menu, there is something there for everyone. While on the pricier side, town delivers in taste and quality. The service was great, and our server was very attentive even during peak dinner hours. There was about a 25 minute wait when we signed up around 7 on a Wednesday, but we were taken off the waitlist after around 10 minutes. The interior is decorated very nice, and you have to check out the bathroom for the funky TV next to the sink! read more

Came here for the bread pudding and had to suffer through entrees first (just kidding). The entrees are good, but the bread pudding is just the hit of the meal / evening. If you're in the area, definitely save room for the bread pudding. And get it à la mode so you have that nice scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. read more

This place is an institution. 5 stars... every time. Whether it's a special occasion or you just don't feel like cooking, Town has you covered. Feeling like a steak but your girl wants sushi... go to Town. Desperate for a juicy burger, but she wants something classier, TOWN. Trying to just chill for the night? TOWN! Wake up in the morning feeling like a boozy brunch??? You guessed it, TOWN. I've had everything on this damn menu and the food never disappoints. The burger is top notch and at $21, a bargain compared to most other sit-downs. The Mary's Chicken can feed 2 and comes with any sides you want... load it up. The steaks are fantastic, though I save those for a special occasion or when i'm with my GF and we can split a bit ribeye (chef cut) and some apps. Finally, the service. They have a cadre of people to keep this place going. Great bartenders that know how to mix up every drink under the sun, nice hosts that greet you and give you accurate wait times, and servers that never forget about you (btw, Walter is the best. I've been here many a times now and Town never disappoints! I'm a huge fan of their weekday lunch deal where you can get an appetizer and an entrée, which is such a great way to try multiple items on the menu at a really reasonable price. This last visit, we shared a few appetizers including the cheesy garlic bread, brussels sprouts, and crispy potatoes. Everything was super delicious and came with amazing sauces that complemented each dish really well. The potatoes especially stood out to me, they had a lot of garlic, which I love, but it wasn't overpowering. The garlic had a nice sweetness to it and paired perfectly with the crispy texture of the potatoes. For my main, I got the steak salad, which had a really nice Asian-inspired twist with ginger and noodles. Another favorite of mine is the Napa cabbage salad. We were also celebrating my birthday, and they brought out a bread pudding cake to share that was absolutely delicious with an amazing sauce on top. Every time I come here, I try to order something new because everything has been consistently great. The wrap around bar with TV's makes it a great spot to watch sports. The outdoor seating seemed more causal and fun while inside was more formal. Overall great place to eat for any occasion! I'm genuinely disappointed to be writing this because Town has been one of my favorite local restaurants for years, but I don't know what has changed. From the bar to the kitchen, this place has completely lost its touch. At this point, the ambiance feels like the only thing that has remained consistent. On our most recent visit, we ordered a steak medium rare and it came out completely well done--not even a hint of pink. We politely sent it back and asked for it to be prepared medium rare. The replacement came back essentially raw. There is a huge difference between medium rare and raw, and I was shocked that either steak made it out of the kitchen. Unfortunately, this wasn't an isolated experience. The last time we were here, our mac and cheese arrived completely burnt and black on top. When we sent it back, the replacement was severely undercooked. At some point, it stops feeling like an occasional kitchen mistake and starts feeling like a quality-control problem. I really tried to give Town another chance, but this visit was my final straw. What makes this especially disappointing is that I love the owners' family and genuinely want to support their businesses. Thankfully, I can continue doing that at Milagros and Alpine Inn, but Town has gone noticeably downhill and lost the spark that once made it such a great local restaurant. The service is a mixed bag. The servers, hosts, bussers, and manager have been excellent and deserve credit. The bartenders, however, consistently seem unfriendly and disengaged. A simple hello or acknowledgment goes a long way, especially at a neighborhood restaurant where hospitality should be part of the experience. I really hope Town turns things around because I would love to have my old favorite restaurant back. But after repeatedly giving it another chance and leaving disappointed, I unfortunately don't see myself returning anytime soon. The food and bar experience need serious attention--and at this point, I think some meaningful changes in the kitchen and behind the bar are overdue. They did comp our steak... which was nice and the obvious thing to do... but at the end of the day, I'm turned off by the overall experience (that continues to happen) and THAT is why I won't be coming back. read more

I came here for dinner about three years ago with my now ex-husband and a colleague of his. We sat outside on a pleasant weather evening and I do recall being fond of my experience. This last time I went with my adult daughter on a Sunday for brunch. I normally wouldn't drive down to San Carlos from SF. We were in the area for the car show that morning and looking for breakfast and lunch options because it was in between hours (11 AM-ish). The menu is a little all over the place. I have feelings about restaurants and eateries that don't have a dedicated cuisine, but that's not to say I don't like them. I'm not sure how I feel about it with the price range of Town. Town is known mostly as a steakhouse in my opinion, but their brunch menu also has a sushi section as well as classic breakfast items. They also have on the brunch menu things like chilaquiles, loco moco, and tostada. The food is good, but i likely won't be going out of my way to spend a hundred dollars on breakfast for two. I ordered the steak salad, love the pickled ginger in it! Yum! Mom ordered the ahi which she enjoyed it came with a peanut sauce like you find for fresh spring rolls and dressed pea sprouts. This was our 3rd visit to Town restaurant in downtown San Carlos. We had brunch there on a Sunday and found parking easily in the nearby parking garage a block away. This place has a very nice indoor ambience, but this time we ate outside in the parklet (that way we were seated right away, instead of having to wait 15-20 mins). They had a space heater right next to the table so no issues with eating outside. Food - I had a sangria (delicious!) and the Chilaquiles (chicken with 2 fried eggs, tortillas, guacamole etc) which was delicious and a very large portion. My husband had the Shaking Beef bowl which includes filet mignon, rice, veggies, onions, tomatoes. Very tasty. Also a good portion. This place is awesome! Fair warning...this block of Laurel street seems to be permanently closed off to traffic. I kinda reminds me of a Hallmark Christmas movie scene. I've been going to town for many years because they're always reliable. I was even suggested to go to a Greek restaurant today from Memorial Day. I said no, I want to go to town for an American holiday. Unfortunately, nobody suggested to the staff that they wish veterans a happy Memorial Day. The Town came as a high recommendation from a friend. I'm not typically out in the San Carlos area but I had to make the trip! At first glance, it looked to be that they were very busy. I went on a weekday around lunchtime so a little late is always possible. We found the server desk right inside the front entrance past the outdoor seating and there was tons of open space in nice luxurious booths in the restaurant. The service was fast. The water was always full. And the ambience was top notch. As you can see from the photos, we decided to go with a couple of different starters that were excellent and the main dishes really hit a home run in my belly. I'd recommend this place to anybody looking for a new vibe in dining. Plenty of TVs and a nice size bar area. We sat outside on a sunny afternoon that still had a little chill in the air, and they thoughtfully positioned the heaters for us which made it incredibly comfortable. Service like that matters. One steak came out slightly overcooked, but they handled it flawlessly. Not only did they correct it quickly, they insisted on removing it from the bill entirely. That level of accountability speaks volumes. I don't usually gravitate toward fish, but the halibut was to die for. Perfectly cooked, flavorful, and executed with precision. Beautiful restaurant located on Laurel street that offers a delicate brunch menu that will excite anyone. This is my wife's favorite restaurant when she's home visiting family and now it has become mine. We are always met with warm greetings and are always seated and waited on immediately. I've been coming to Town San Carlos for years and this most recent visit was for dinner on a Tuesday night. Street parking in the area can be hit or miss and I usually have no issues parking in the free parking garage a couple blocks away closer to San Carlos Avenue. For appetizers, we had the Chilean sea bass tostadas, vegetable roll, and Philly cheesesteak spring rolls. The house slaw and chipotle aioli worked really well with the battered sea bass and chip on the bottom; the balances of textures was on point and the chipotle aioli was not really spicy at all which is fine since I usually don't eat too much spicy food. I usually don't like sushi from American restaurants but this appetizer was okay; it did not taste authentic and I would not order it myself in the future. The spring rolls were my favorite because I enjoyed the crunchy outside paired with the spiced steak inside. For this dish, I did not try the included house spicy ketchup but enjoyed the horseradish cream sauce even though I normally do not like horseradish. I ordered their Song Dynasty with kiwi, lemongrass, lemon juice, orange flower water, and elderflower tonic; I saw the lemongrass noted in the menu description and went with that to try it; the drink overall was a bit tart and I probably would not get it again. My first individual course was my salad and I chose the classic Caesar. Keep in mind that these salad portions are not your normal salad portions you eat before your main course; these portions are humongous and could serve as a meal on their own. The lettuce was dressed really well with the creamy-garlic Caesar dressing and I liked how there was a heavy amount of herbed sourdough croutons spread throughout the plate. For my main course I got a surf and turf with filet mignon and sauteed lemon-garlic shrimp. At first I thought they forgot my shrimp since my plate only had the filet mignon, garlic mashed potatoes and roasted broccoli but the shrimp came a couple minutes later in its own mini bowl. I think it would've been nice if the shrimp was already on the plate in terms of presentation. I asked for my filet mignon to be cooked medium rare and I think they did a good job doing so. The shrimp was good but I didn't really think of anything that made it stand out on its own. For dessert, I had their famous warm bread pudding and it was so good I finished it quickly. Overall, the service was great and each dish was prepared well. I definitely left full and overall enjoyed my dining experience. If you are in or near San Carlos and are craving elevated American food with Asian and Mexican influence without being considered as fusion cuisine in a setting with a neutral ambiance without anything gimmicky, I highly recommend Town, though the experience might be best for a special occasion dinner rather than a random weeknight dinner. read more

Came here for a private event and... WOW. The private dining room is tucked away upstairs, cozy and inviting--like stepping into someone's beautifully designed home. The vibe? Impeccable. The service? Flawless. The menu? Honestly, I was blown away. I'm usually wary of these pre-set dinner situations--like, how do you know what I want to eat? Spoiler: you don't. But this dinner flipped the script. After the most mind-blowing appetizers, including philly cheesesteak egg rolls, jalapeño sushi, fried chicken sliders and Caesar salad with the freshest croutons, we actually got to choose our own salad or soup and main course. Naturally, I went with the filet mignon--and oh. my. gawd. It melted in my mouth. Scratch that--everything melted in my mouth. The cocktail I had? Out of this world. Some magical lavender concoction I wish I could remember the name of. I've been to Town before, but tonight was something else entirely. The food, the drinks, the ambiance--it all hit different. And not gonna lie, the company made it even better. Never thought a work-adjacent event would turn into an exceptional dining experience--but here we are.
