I have been to UnCab several times in it's long running existence and have never not had an outstanding time. Beth always procures the best comedic talent in Los Angeles and has them talk about whatever is going on for them currently. part story-telling, part stand up, part confessional, it is one of my favorite shows in town. I have been to Uncabaret a few times now and have never been disappointed! The location is easy to find with a parking structure, which is a must-have in downtown LA. The comedians are all great, the food is killer and the drinks are strong; what more could you ask for? The thing that pushes it over the top for me is the fact that there is a live band. The energy from the comedians coupled with the band is the best. I recommend you bring a group with you when you go, it just adds to the fun. Also, don't be surprised if you end up sitting next to your favorite star, everyone comes through! Beth (the host) and Mitch (the band leader) are the best and keep the party going! UNCABARET IS ONE OF THE ALL-TIME GREAT LOS ANGELES INSTITUTIONS! Less joke-y and rehearsed than typical stand-up and more raw and gut-wrenchingly funny than other shows like it, I have been a huge fan of UnCab (as the cognescenti call it!) since it began. And the reason it's lasted so long and endured several changes in venue is because there's nothing else exactly like it (which was even more true when it started years ago), and the quality of the shows is so consistently stellar. The quality of UnCab is so high that when first-timers compare it to other ongoing comedy or storytelling shows they've attended, UnCab stands out from the rest. I have RARELY seen a low-quality performer at UnCab. And I have been going on-and-off for YEARS! It's a mixture of comedians, writers, actors, musicians, and other funny and/or notable characters (some famous, others infamous) telling first-person humorous stories for the first time -- the mostly followed rule is that the stories are supposed to be told for the first time ever. (And a lot of the material, being of such a highly personal nature as per the UnCab format, may never be heard anywhere ever again.) In this current incarnation of UnCabaret, there's also a musical performer or two on each bill, generally limited to a two or three song set. What I love about UnCab is that, when it comes to the comedy, I never know what I'm going to hear, but from experience I know that it's almost guaranteed that it will A) be raw, gritty, and personal, and B) have me in stitches and jotting down lines so I can laugh about them again later on. I try to go as often as I can. The cover charge is reasonable, especially considering that some of the comedians are "name," either in the comedy world or in the world of pop culture. Some of UnCab's regular performers are well-known people you'll see on TV as actors or comedians; Some are comedians who work "the road," but they do different material here than in their regular comedy club sets. I have Sirius XM Radio and I'm always hearing UnCab performers being played on the Sirius comedy channels. And other UnCab performers are pop-culture gems you've often heard of, whether personal "industry" aquaintances of UnCab hostess/producer Beth Lapides and Musical Director Mitch Kaplan, or quirky undiscovered personalities who've chosen UnCab to tell their most deeply personal hilarities. One new UnCab fave is Saturday Night Live alum Cheri Oteri, known for her hilarious characters on SNL, now developing her natural gift for stand-up. Dozens of UnCab performers of past years have gone on to careers so big they rarely have time for UnCab anymore -- we're now seeing the big stars of the future! The great thing about UnCab being downtown and early on a Sunday night is that there is virtually no traffic going there or coming home afterwards, whether you're taking surface streets or the freeway. I find it takes minutes to get there and back home again. The show isn't overly long, and ends early enough for a work/school night. UnCab is held in a beautiful private room in a restaurant called First & Hope that is AT First & Hope, which is not hard to find. There is secure parking in the garage underneath; occasionally I have found street parking. Busses also come right to the corner, if you are bussing it. Be sure to come hungry and thirsty, because First & Hope has a great bar menu of really interesting, inventive, delicious & yummy bites, not your typical low-quality bar food, and a full bar, of course. You could also come to First & Hope before the show and eat dinner in the restaurant before going into the showroom -- check with the restaurant about this. The room UnCab is held in is gorgeous -- it's intimate, the seats are well-padded and comfortable, and there's not a bad seat in the house. Every seat, literally, is a great seat. Beth likes to create a welcoming, homey atmosphere and treats everyone like her personal guests, so the show feels somewhat like we're all gathered in someone's extremely upscale living room to listen to the intimate and hilarious musings of friends-of-friends. Bottom line: no two shows are alike. You can come frequently, and you will not see the same people or hear the same jokes. For the price of a crummy Hollywood movie, you can see an uproarious, boundary-pushing live show of edgy comedians and a smidge of hip music -- far more interesting for Monday morning's water-cooler chit-chat than whatever else you were planning for your Sunday night. Go often and get to know and follow your favorite performers -- that's how I got hooked on UnCab! read more

I've been hearing about UnCabaret forever and can't believe I never got there until last year. Now I'm kicking myself for all I know I've missed. Beth Lapides works ceaselessly to put together an eclectic show every week that never fails to please. She invites the guests to go deep and come up with funny stories, not schtick, and the results are wonderful. There always a great mix of comedy, music and anything else. The guests include people I've seen on TV or folks I've never heard of. I don't really pay attention because whenever we go we're entertained. I'm always bringing friends along and they love it too. The venue is a lovely and intimate space which adds to the mix. My husband and I go out to live theatre and clubs quite often, but this is simply one of our faves and always a good time. Do yourself a favor and get to UnCab on a Sunday night so you won't have to kick yourself in the future. read more

Comedic therapy is the best way I can describe my first (and definitely not last) experience at UnCabaret. The venue is located downtown. Parking was easy and accessible, and the venue had an old skool Hollywood glamour feel to it. They had a full menu with great food and delicious cocktails. What I really enjoyed about this comedy show was the diverse acts that it offered to the audience. There was an amazing comedic magic show that I felt was very original, not to mention every other comedian i saw was genuinely funny, yet diverse! Not one bad act! There was also a vulnerability and personal engagement from the comedians that was extremely refreshing! What better way to deal with life's struggles than to laugh at them, and that is why UnCabaret really appealed to me! Beth Lapides has done an amazing job with the show, and I highly recommend you make this part of your L.A. experience. read more

UnCabaret is hard to explain. It's comedy. It's spontaneity. It's real, and it's really entertaining. Think about a night out at a comedy club, but instead of "alleged" retread comedy that insults your intelligence, you get witty, insightful, surprising fun and wisdom, wrapped in a warm hilarity that will leave you laughing and pondering for many months, even years to come. You may see a celeb or two, either in the audience or on the stage while you're there. Gentle soul Beth Lapides is the visionary behind this wonderful venture and I cannot recommend UnCab highly enough. This is an expensive night out at $20 per ticket $10 parking and 2 drink minimum so I expected it to be good. It wasn't worth the expense in my opinion. First it started almost 30 minutes late (it's a Sunday night-some of us have jobs!) and then the service was incredibly slow because they had only 2 servers for 50 people. I had to leave early so I'm not sure how late it actually went in the end. There are funnier, more conveniently-located shows to spend a Sunday night at for less than $75. read more

By far the best alternative comedy club around! Unique, unusual, fast-moving, gut busting laughter, in a really great supper club. No one hounds you to buy a drink or food, the staff is friendly & food is great. Beth is spectacular! She has an eye for great talent & hilarious storytelling. The band & music are wonderful too! I had my birthday party here & my friends still bring up how fun that night was! You will not be disappointed and might get to see a surprise legend performing! If you want a comfortable, classy evening of fun and laughs, and the best raw vegan food in Los Angeles, this is certainly the place to be. I went there when they first opened and it was excellent! The comedians had me in tears. We went back a couple of months ago and it was just as awesome as I remembered with even better food. Don't be fooled by the "raw vegan". The organic food is filling, delicious and worth every penny! It will also leave you feeling awesome inside. This is a great place to take a date or friends for a nice evening out! read more

I have spent many a sunday night here and it's always an adventure in off the wall humor. It's irreverent and edgy and fun! And I've seen some good musical acts as well. The venue is located in the back of a vegan Vietnamese restaurant. What my party was not told, was that there was a two item minimum purchase. I even revisited Groupon to see if this was mentioned and it was not. Unfortunately, we had just eaten before arriving. We tried to buy bottles of water, but they were conveniently sold out. The show started about 10 after 8 and the host got the show off to a slow start. I couldn't wait for the next entertainer to come on. The next entertainer was equally unimpressive. The third a little better. The entertainers did get better throughout the night. I am not a resident of Los Angeles but I cannot see how this show is one of the top 5 comedy shows in all of LA. This "fact" is what sold me. There were a couple of diamonds in the rough, but 20-30 redeeming minutes out of an approximately 2 hour show does not make for a good show. When I received the bill, there was also a service charge of over $8 added. We ended up spending $60 on two tiny alcoholic drinks, two horribly-tasting bowls of popcorn (that we didn't eat), and an iced tea. I won't go back. And I won't recommend it to anyone. I apologized to my group on the way out because I had pushed for the show. read more

My boyfriend and I went to UnCabaret for the first time a few weeks back. We LOVED it. It was so different from anything we have ever experienced.
