I usually like this in n out but I've noticed the service has been declining. Went thru the drive thru today on 7/26 and the guy who took my order Bret(t) had a nasty attitude. Rolled his eyes when I asked him to show me the menu and was very short and rude in general it genuinely took me aback. His whole demeanor screamed he wanted to be anywhere else but working. The customer service here -really- stood out to me. In-N-Out (in my experience) has very little discrepancy in terms of food quality between their many locations. This particular restaurant's set of employees make the customer service experience here well-beyond phenomenal. My friends and I were helped by a couple of different staff members throughout our visit, and they were all so sincerely kind and considerate in addressing our questions and requests. At one point, I wound up accidentally tossing my Invisalign aligner into the trash bin (swaddled in a thoughtful brown paper towel wrapping within a small plastic bag). It took me 2-3 hours and a very long drive from the store location before I finally noticed that I was missing something very expensive. I immediately called In-N-Out, and the service rep on the line was kind to relay my concern about my missing aligner to the store manager, Matthew. As luck would have it, there was a chance that my aligner might still be around somewhere. I drove back to the restaurant as soon as I could, armed with nitrile gloves that gave me confidence to dumpster-dive and claw my way to my misplaced aligner. Though I was fully prepared to go out the back and get my forearms dirty, Matthew insisted otherwise- he and another employee will help me look for my aligner while I wait at the front instead. There was a bit of an early dinner rush when I arrived, and the place was fairly swamped; I felt bad. They were clearly busy. But Matthew reassured me. After taking a moment to dig around with one of the store's employees, he presented me with my clear, plastic aligner- newly washed and dried between layers of white paper-towels; he absolutely did not need to do all of that before giving the aligner back to me, but he did; just as the staff absolutely did not need to help me look for my missing aligner, but they did. Well the City of Encinitas went bananas apeshit when this location opened. I purposely avoided it because of the cluster f*ck if was going to do to the traffic in this area. I waited a couple of weeks and then a month and then realized the cluster f*ck traffic is never going to end. And I'm not waiting a year to get my In-N-Out fix. So I braved it. And what do you know? It wasn't that bad. They have employees outside directing traffic and taking orders for efficiency. And they must treat their staff very well because seriously they all seem so content, friendly and happy. The food is consistent with all the other In-N-Outs I have been to which means YUM. So this is one of the rare places that I will brave a line because I know they've got it going on. read more

In and Out has long been considered the standard for the quintessential California hamburger. Around since the 40's, it's synonymous with the beach and sun, best when eaten' in your car, overlooking a cliff, watching the sunset. I've been eating there since I was a kid and loved 'em. Today, I'm not sure if my palette is more refined, or if I've become a snob, or if I've just had a number of hamburgers that are WAAAAAAAY better, but this In and Out kinda sucks. I once made note that I would recommend a burger here over 5 Guys, but that is not so with this location at the very least. Patties are small and dry, everything is a little bland, the tomato is cut so thick that it overwhelms everything else, very overpriced, and just a bit sucky all around. Eating here has made me wonder if all the In and Out's are like this. Not really surprising that the lines quickly went from around the block right after opening to today with a drive thru only half full on Saturday night at dinner time. For those of you at home, it's like Transformers opening up to a huge opening and then dropping off close to 70% of its business a week later because it sucks so much. Did you see that movie? My toddler son couldn't make turds that big, and he eats a lot of macaroni! The way it is here, the burgers are about as expensive as 5 Guys, but without any of the size or taste. Hamburgers over at The Habit are cheaper, bigger, juicier, taste better, come with way better fries, and are all around tastier. With only the difference between a drive thru and sit down / take out only between Habit and In and Out, to me the choice is quickly becoming all too clear. We stopped here, because we had a long drive back, it was late, and it was raining, and thought we should get a coffee. The drive thru was long (when isn't it?). However, once the man with a full load of people in his car ahead of us put in his huge order, it moved quickly. We ordered a coffee and we couldn't resist getting some fries. ..extra crispy. Despite growing up eating In-N-Out on a weekly basis, I can't get enough! First of all, the prices are super reasonable (but it is steadily going up). Second, the food is always fresh and tasty. Clearly nothing is frozen or processed- just good simple ingredients. Some off the menu tips to keep your options interesting: - animals style fries: adding grilled onions, their famous sauce and cheese piled on top of fresh fries - protein style: a burger without buns, instead wrapped with lettuce - ketchup and mustard instead of their famous sauce - neapolitan shake (mix strawberry, vanilla and chocolate shake) - add grilled hot peppers to your burger or fries for the added kick of spice - you can mix and match as many beef patties and cheese slices as you like (for example a 4x4 means you get 4 patties and 4 cheese slices) - you can ask for well done fries (crispier than their normal batch of fries) Only downfall is that they are always busy!! Came in around 5PM on a Sunday for a quick dinner after tanning on the beach. I'm from NYC so this is definitely part of the California experience. The last time I had in n out was 5 years ago in SF, but I can say this experience was better. I ordered a #2 cheeseburger, medium drink (opted for light lemonade and refilled while waiting for my order) and fries. We waited around 5-7 mins for the food to come - quicker than my last wait in SF at fisherman's wharf. Food came still warm, but fries chilled rather quickly on the ride home. The burger was still very yummy and warm. I wish the fries weren't so soggy. For the $7 price, the meal is pretty worth it. However, being from the east coast, I'm a shake shack fan ahah. My friends said to order the fries animal style...but I'd suspect the cheese and sauce would solidify rather quickly. Nonetheless, will always be down for an in n out burger when on the west coast! They use fresh wholesome ingredients prepared simply to make great American comfort food at an affordable price. I'm reviewing this In-N-Out Burger mostly for this particular location, not really as the "chain." This location is conveniently located near the freeway exit by the Encinitas San Diego Botanical Gardens. It has a nice, large parking lot that easy to get in and out of. There is plenty of seating inside and a nice outdoor eating area. It is clean, spacious and modern. All the condiments, etc were well stocked. Our server was incredibly polite, helpful and precise. The service was super quick and accurate. My mom got a burger animal style with fries. Her food was hot, fresh and deliciously cooked. The portion of fries was abnormally huge and the burger extra stuffed with toppings. The meat patty had a nice char to it. She claims it is the best In-N-Out burger she has ever had!!! The best fast food burger there is, especially for the price. I last ate at an In N Out back about 11 years ago and remember it as some kind of a religious experience. Over the years I have had some awesome burgers, refined my dining palette, but decided upon traveling to an In N Out location that I HAD to try it. Double double animal style and protein style is what I got and it was amazing! Loved the flavors, and the price! I think we ordered for the whole family and it was under $20! Can't beat that AND the food tastes pretty good. On top of it all, they ask if you are eating in the car (weird I thought), but they do that to give you paper mats to put in your lap in case you spill! Amazing!
