Pretty damn good. My colleagues and I haunt this place every few weeks for the lunch buffet which is really good. They don't have too many dishes, but the stuff they do have is awesome. The butter chicken and tandoori chicken are moist and flavourful but the standout is the mutton curry. They also have 2-3 good vegetable dishes, and the pricing is pretty reasonable too. The service is also pretty good here. I've never had anything off the regular menu here, so I can't comment on it. As a disclaimer, it is a North Indian place, so some dishes are very heavy on the stomach. This becomes very important when you choose this place for an office lunch. The Sunday night dinner is extremely overpriced for what is offered and left me disappointed driving 35 mins. I've paid the same, even less, even more for dinner buffets and have been WOWed by presentation, taste and variety. This is more of a spread I've seen at 8.95 LUNCH buffets. The most annoying part is the lack of options they served. Not only that, but what was out wasn't replaced quickly And that was all luke warm. I noticed there was mostly a western clientele which might allude to the lack of flavor and authenticity as they are catering to a different palate rather than someone from India. We were a Chinese family of 3. Made a reservation for 7:00pm on Saturday. Was greeted by a snide manager (the owner Sunil). Informed us we could not get a booth because that one was reserved. BS! A family just left that booth so it wasn't reserved before. Talking to the manager got him defensive, until he said, "Please don't look at the reservation list [sitting out on the open counter]. You're making me uncomfortable." The couple behind us also seemed taken back by the brusque responses as they waited for their table to be ready. The whole experience gave us a sour taste, and we eventually cancelled our reservation and left. The manager seemed happy. The message is clear: they don't want your business. The place was packed with locals (mostly Caucasians). No Indians. This is a sign. There are many Indian restaurants in north & central Jersey. This place needs to step up its customer service. We ate @ Begum Palace Sunday for the 4th time since last November. The food is delicious and our time is made more memorable from speaking w/Sonny. His enthusiasm and passion for our dining experience is excellent and contagious and raises the whole evening quality. The last (2) times, we've been so confident in Sonny's recommendations we've let him choose after telling him our preferences. We began w/Veggie Pakora's and for dinner, it was Pistachio Chicken, Paneer Jalfrazie, and Bhooni Bhindi. It was all very tasty and it had some good spice and the (3) all went together well on the plate. We generally prefer chicken and veggie entrees. The food is reasonably priced, customer service is spot on and the entire experience is always enjoyable. We will definitely be back again soon. read more

So it's important to know that the management of this place has changed since January 1st. And it is noticeable in a very good way. I do not believe the menu has changed yet. My girlfriend and I frequent this place -- because she loves Indian food and they are located down the street from us. The food here has always been good, but during our visit last week, I noticed that the chicken was REALLY good. And so were all of the sauces. It was then that I noticed that the decor had changed. It is much better lit, and more tastefully decorated. I confirmed with one of the employees that management has changed. I will DEFINITELY be back soon! This is the first (and last) time for Begum Palace. The portions were small and the Butter Chicken was so salty and it wasn't creamy like the Butter Chicken from Cinnamon in Morris Plains. My husband had Lamb Vindaloo which consisted of 2 small pieces of potato, 6 small cubes of lamb and the rest was sauce and big chunks of what looked like canned tomatoes. The sauce tasted nothing like Vindaloo. It didn't get much better from there. Tandoori Grill was a small portion, the meat was tough and dry. I thought Begum Palace was great. I went for lunch on a Friday and ordered from the new lunch menu. Service was very good and quick. I got the chicken curry and it also came with a delicious samosa, rice, naan, and kheer (sweet milky rice pudding). Good amount of food for $14 but I would have preferred more meat in the main dish instead of so much carbs. The flavor of the curry was superb and the chicken was tender.
