After some good friends of ours who are Portuguese cuisine experts recommended we try here especially to get the octopus we had to try them for a date night. We had to wait for a table on a Friday evening and we were able to order drinks while we waited. I mistakenly ordered a cheapo red wine but it was disappointing. My husband ordered a better wine that I stole several sips from. Once we were seated, we were pleased with the homey ambiance. I always love when I see families and others who seem to be regulars at a place. There were two types of octopus and my husband ordered the baked octopus. I ordered the chicken Mozambique. Their chicken mozambique did not disappoint however it was not my favorite in the area. We later found out that our friends' favorite was actually the grilled octopus, so next time my husband wants to give that a try. We were hoping for dessert to split a slice of cheesecake but sadly they were out. This is a solid option for some yummy Portuguese if we can't venture to Fall River! We'll be back! read more

If I ever want to introduce people to Portuguese food or just amazing food in general, I come to Inner Bay. Owners Tony and Judy become your family and I've never felt more welcome at a restaurant. I have sent many friends there and only wish it was closer to me -it's an hour drive. Their fresh specials are always amazing and I'm totally partial to their roasted octopus with lots of olive oil and garlic and potatoes that melt in your mouth. They have a plethora of wonderful wine to choose from and their homemade desserts are too sumptuous to skip dessert. Really a culinary haven in New England. Love this restaurant. Used to vacation in New Bedford every year, and always made a point to come here for the delicious food and amazing homemade desserts. Now we've moved to the area and still love coming to Inner Bay. The food is always fresh, they have interesting specials, the staff is friendly (and funny!), and the portions are generous. I have some oddities in how I eat. Sometimes they can adjust a dish to fit my requirements. Otherwise, they will steer me toward something else on the menu that can be adjusted. Very accommodating. Take Out Review: Got take out here with the family. Will make this one short and sweet: 25 minutes wait time took about 40 minutes which honestly wasn't to to bad because the food was still warm on arrival home. As for the food, Chicken was underdone needed at least 5 more minutes on the grille so it wasn't eaten (my girl's and mothers dish). The steak that I got was cooked perfectly, but not your typical Portuguese place around here that gives a massive portion of food. Will have to try inside. read more

I don't have a lot of experience with this place so I can't say if my experience is common or not. I went there with my family and some relatives to celebrate an engagement and I must say I was very underwhelmed. To be honest I was disappointed and didn't enjoy meal and neither did my wife. Not sure if it was because it was a little busy or a bunch of us so they rushed it and didn't make it good idk but I was disappointed and for how expensive the meal was it made me not want to return. I got Bifinhos De Galinha and wife got the Bife À Açoreano. It's a shame because I was told they were good but honestly I find it hard to believe from my experience. I was there yesterday and sadly was very disappointed with the food! This was the first family outing in a long time because my father has cancer and we were all looking forward to amazing flavorful food because of the good reviews online. I ordered the stuffed fish with creole sauce and got stuffed fish with a mound of peppers and onions on top! That is NOT a creole sauce! I asked the waitress and she did not offer to get me another sauce or anything. I scrapped off the peppers and did my best to eat my food. The fish itself was a very small and bland. My veggies were cold. I had a little and left most of my meal on the plate. When my meal was wrapped the waitress discarded the onions and peppers. She should have asked if I wanted to leave them out, not take it upon herself to discard without asking me. My brother also didn't like his dish of shrimp and scallops. The portion was tiny and not flavorful at all. My nephew got the chicken fingers (3) and fries which were good but $14!! My fish meal was $16. The desserts were also not very good but thankfully we were not charged for the 3 desserts. My sister in law liked her steak and my other nephew liked his fish and chips. The place itself was nice and the artwork was a nice touch. Unfortunately, being in New Bedford and at a seafood restaurant, we expected great seafood. However, with the portion size you really don't need to be eating bread. Calamari App, 4* Scallop wrapped in bacon app: 3*, Good bacon, scallops were so-so. Salad: 3.5 * Wine was reasonably priced. Menu is limited. I really wanted a pork dish but there was only one which didn't appeal to me. For my main dish I had "Mixed Grill" which is chicken, beef, pork and veggies. The flavors were good and the veggies were all cooked well, but all of the meat was dry and overcooked. If the meat was properly cooked, my overall rating for the restaurant would have been 4*. My wife gave the shrimp dish 3*. Good texture but nothing special on the taste. read more

I've been here a couple of times, once for lunch, once for dinner. We sat in the downstairs dining room both times, but I think I read somewhere that there's a second floor dining area. I really like the décor. It's industrial elegant (is that a thing?). We were seated right away both times as there was no wait. Also, both times it wasn't busy, so we only saw one or two servers, but service was never lacking. On the contrary, the last time (for dinner on a Saturday evening), our server was very attentive and personable. I was surprised (and LOVED) that she paused at our table on her way to another table to show us their plates/meals which included a couple of specials. I thought that was awesome because sometimes you wish you could just see it before ordering. The menu is fantastic. It includes all the basics plus some interesting varieties. This last time, we started with the littlenecks for an appetizer and I got the cup of seafood chowder. They were both good, but super salty. I was concerned that the bacalhau a braz I ordered as an entree would also be salty (which would totally bum me out - it's my favorite!), but I am happy to report that the bacalhau was perfect! My husband got the steak with ham and egg on it and he was also very happy with his meal (I stole a couple of his round fries and concur; it was yummy!). We couldn't pass up the pumpkin bread pudding for dessert. It was out-of-the-oven hot with a dollop of fresh cream - oh so good! I'm drooling just thinking about it. I really like that Inner Bay provides all this good service and wonderful food at reasonable process. It makes a lovely meal out really accessible. It's on my short list of places to go to in New Bedford for good Portuguese food and will definitely return. Oh, and bonus surprise that we got 7% back from Yelp! We were looking for lunch to entertain our grandsons and my Mom and Dad after a day at Buttonwood Zoo. Craving some Portuguese food, we found Inner Bay on Yelp and headed over (it's less than two miles from the zoo). It was a quiet Tuesday afternoon, and we were promptly (and warmly) greeted by one of the owners, Judy, who was extra nice to our two boys. We ordered spaghetti for the kids - which Judy brought out almost right away, with our appetizer (two cheese fondue - wow!). Wicked smart - by the time our meals came, the kids were done and not bugging us, and we could enjoy our meals - which we did!!! My wife and I had Shrimp Mozambique and Chicken Mozambique - most excellent! Mom had the sea bass, lightly fried and served with fresh veggies and potatoes. Dad had a great Portuguese steak sandwich. Overall, an excellent dining adventure! We'll definitely be back!! read more

We used a Limelight Deal coupon for lunch and it was terrific. The $10 for $20 deal paid for our food. The lunch menu is very reasonably priced. We had Fish and Chips and Codfish Silmo, $6 and $8 respectively and side salads for $3. The portions were generous and the food was tasty and well-prepared. The server was very friendly and the restaurant is nicely decorated. Wine menu was good with lots of choices. We will certainly be back to enjoy this restaurant again. read more

***UPDATE*** I've been back to Inner Bay many times since my first review, I even chose it as my birthday dinner destination for my 30th party. I have to say it is now one of my go-to's for Portuguese, and especially for larger groups, as they do it family style if you'd like. You can't be a Portuguese restaurant in New Bedford and get away with bad food, but I wouldn't choose Inner Bay as my new go-to place. I went with my parents and some aunts and uncles on a Sunday afternoon for lunch around 1245, there were a few other groups in the restaurant, but it wasn't busy or slow. I always have an internal battle with myself when at a Portuguese restaurant over whether to get the Mozambique or the Alentejana, and since it'd been longer since I had the latter, I went with that. All entrees came with choice of side salad or kale soup, and I chose the salad, though probably should have gotten the soup. The side salad seemed kinda small, unless it was just in comparison to the large plate it was served on, run of the mill salad, but did what it was supposed to do. I didn't try the soup, but it was a big helping, and I'm sure tasty. Our meals came out quickly, I presume since it wasn't that crowed, and I'm not sure if it was a lunch portion or not, but my meal was very big and only $11 if I remember correctly. For those of you not familiar with Carne Alentejana, it is described at tender marinated pork meat simmered with fresh littlenecks over deep fried potatoes. Now the taste was wonderful, there was lots of sauce which I used a roll to dip into, but only 4 Littlenecks in the entire dish, and the pork was very unevenly cooked. Some pieces were tender and cooked just right, while most were overcooked and chewy. I'm not sure if it was due to the different size meat, or because of a cooking mishap, but I just wasn't terribly impressed, especially because I've had it cooked so wonderfully elsewhere. For dessert, we ordered the flan which was served a top a layer of chocolate cake. Now, the cake was moist and delicious, and the flan was good, but not terribly flavorful. Our waitress noted that all the desserts were homemade, but again I've had better flan elsewhere too. I wasn't disappointed with my meal at Inner Bay Cafe, but when there are so many other wonderful Portuguese restaurants in the area, I won't be headed back here in any rush. read more

Went there for lunch recently. The restaurant is old world style charm very warm and welcoming. Greeted immediately as we walked in. Was not busy so it was nice and intimate. We ordered the octopus meal and a cod fish and potato meal. The octopus was tender and seasoned perfectly ..so delicious. The cod fish was lightly battered and potatoes were perfectly cooked. Our 1st time there. Went last weekend (me, hubby, my Dad & Step-Mom), it was a 1st time for all of us. The place is very nice looking. It's small, but attractive and clean. As for the food ... We were offered soup or salad with our dinners, so 2 of us ordered the kale soup and the other 2 got salads. Well ... I hate to say it, but we were shocked at the kale soup. I actually wasn't even sure if it was kale soup. It was basically water and I think cabbage. A very clear, water-like, broth with what we think was cabbage, definitely not kale. Oh, I actually got 1 small piece of a potato and my Dad said "look, I think this is a piece of meat" ... one little piece of meat (we think). That was it exactly. No flavor, no colors, nothing but water-broth and we think pieces of cabbage. We were very very surprised. Now, we know there's many different ways to make kale soup and different versions, but this lacked EVERYTHING. Sorry to say it, but it's true. Then the other 2 got salads. Hubby said his salad was a little warm (he likes a nice cold & crisp salad), and it's made with, I think, dandelion greens, not typical lettuce or spinach. No tomatoes, no cucumber ... basically dandelion greens, a couple pieces of onion, maybe one piece of pepper and some dressing on the side. He said it wasn't the worst, but it definitely was NOT the best. Sadly. But as for the main dishes ... We all agreed they were very very delicious! Thank God!!! Hubby got the Shrimp Mozambique, I got the Farmer Steak, Dad got the Baked Stuffed Shrimp, and his wife got the Carne de Porco a Alentejana. We were all pleased that our dinners were all good, thank goodness! We didn't have dessert. To be honest, they do not have a big selection for desserts ... actually the whole menu's pretty small. Food is always excellent here. Glad we got the same waitress (I think she's the owners wife). She makes choosing your dish easy with the way she describes the specials and how delicious they sound. I always go with one of the specials. By far, they make one of the best arroz doce (rice pudding) that I've had at any of the New Bedford restaurants. Theirs is very creamy and never dry. Drinks are always great. If you're looking for a spot for date night or just a great food choice this would be the place. Members of my family from different towns came here for one of our occasional lunch get-togethers, and we are glad we made that decision. First, the interior is really nice, an old building well-renovated such as you find a lot in New Bedford. There are two dining levels and we were seated on the lower, which is where the handsome bar is located. No real outside view, but a pleasant atmosphere. Our waiter was very friendly and attentive without being intrusive. We ordered three appetizers: fried calamari, steamed littlenecks, and "chourico bombeiro"--a fat spicy sausage which arrived still browning over a flame in its serving dish. All were absolutely delicious (though a few of us passed on the chourico, good news for the rest of us!). A basket of rolls and crispy bread was also provided. The entrees we ordered all featured seafood and everyone enjoyed their choices and generous servings. I had the fish & chips, at a bargain price, and the fish was cooked perfectly with a nice light batter. The skinny fries were something of a disappointment, may have been the frozen type, but were crisp. Some of us had a recommended Portuguese red wine that was quite nice. There was no beer available on draft, but the bottled beers were served with cold glasses. I was too full to order dessert, but those who did raved about the rice pudding and the bread pudding. Two of us ordered espresso, which came in a heated cup and was excellent (and we have had espresso in Portugal and Brazil so are not easily impressed). Our party all agreed that we will put the Inner Bay on our short list of restaurants for future reunions. If some draft beers and homemade fries had been available, I'd give five stars. But this is a place we will definitely visit again. Had a good night out here on a recent Saturday. We were greeted very quickly and asked for a seating preference. We were seated in a booth in the first floor restaurant area. This is an odd thing to complain about but the booth was nearly impossible to get into because of the large obstruction by the leg. We had to put one leg over and shimmy along the seat until we cleared the obstruction with the other leg. The test of physical prowess made me nervous about having to get up to use the rest room. The appetizers were the stand-out of the evening. The selection was varied and the presentation was really cool. Much as I hate to give a quaint restaurant such a low score, I just wasn't impressed with the Inner Bay Cafe. The mussel appetizer was so over-seasoned with lemon and garlic that I couldn't really eat one without making a whiskey face - and this is coming from a guy who loves both lemon and garlic! While my girlfriend enjoyed her shrimp mozambique once a heap of salt was added, I unfortunately had to slog through my grilled chicken. It was cooked perfectly, but wholly unseasoned. Most disappointing of all - my french fries were way undercooked. The vegetables were pretty tasty, though, I must admit. All in all, when dining in New Bedford, there are certain expectations regarding Portuguese food, chief among them that it will be done correctly.
