This is definitely my favorite Insomnia location. The staff here are always friendly and welcoming, drinks are great, and the vibe is just so damn cozy. The stool seats by the windows are perfect for sunny days when sunlight filters in, and the long tables are great for study groups and coffee with friends. This location is super cozy on both sunny and rainy days, and it's great for reading a book, catching up with a friend, or getting some work done. Do note that the place is pretty popular for families, friends, and study groups to get together, so the volume can get pretty high, but that's usual for a coffee shop. I tend to get more work done if a coffee shop is full of people chattering away, but I know that's not for everyone. In terms of drinks and food: I love their seasonal pumpkin spice latte with oat milk, and my usual is a chai latte with oat milk. They usually don't have any vegan pastries (from my experience), but I've tried their regular chocolate chip cookie and it makes me reconsider my dietary choices. It's that good. read more

Every time I leave places behind -- or a man for that matter -- they get cooler. I call it Janet's law. When I left Yuma it got a drive through sushi and teriyaki joint. WHAT?! When I moved away from Belmont street it got all kinds of sweet bars, restaurants, and coffee. It got a freaking Pine State Biscuits ( when that moved locations I felt mildly vindicated). When I left my ex, his parents bought a beach house. ( Fortunately they still love me and my daughter so we get to visit). When I left my job in Hillsboro after nearly 11 years, it got this Insomnia a quick walk from the County. DAMNIT!! I still get to go though as I have former coworkers to dish with over caffeinated delights. Recently three of us met for a delicious latte. My buddy bought an enormous blueberry scone for us to nibble and we scored a sun dappled table by the window. This Insomnia is a nice space. There is a lot of seating. Baristas are efficient and pleasant. I'm trying to console myself about the Janet's law thing. I guess I will drown my sorrows in a series of caramel lattes. That is not so bad. read more

Great study spot! There's lots of seating, and they have those multi-port extension cords throughout the walls for us computer users. I'm not a big sweets drinker but their Aztec mocha is the perfect blend of cinnamon, chocolate, and coffee. With mocha whipped cream!!! Definitely have to try it once! I usually get an Americano or drip coffee and those are great too. Never too acidic or too burnt. Have I mentioned that they make their pastries in house?! The place smells AMAZING and who can say no to fresh baked pastries?! Come by for a relaxing Sunday afternoon to people watch, or grab a pastry and leave. I've been coming to Insomnia since they just has the one Baseline location! The coffee is the best in the 'burbs and the service is always really sweet. I love the unique vibes in each of their shops and pre-covid, they were my favorite spot to sit and work/do homework during the day. Fun, casual, country-chic atmosphere. Every time I walk in, the sweet smell of baking and properly made coffee hits me. I love it! So welcoming and warm. Their baked goods are made with care and not overly sweet. Their coffee never fails. The tortoise shell is superb! With mismatched tables and chairs, it's more like a gathering of family, where everyone has to dig out their chairs from the attic to accommodate. It's sweet. Decorated for the holidays! Attention Vegans!! Or anyone who has milk allergies...or anyone who just wants to know...the in house chai mix they use here, sigh...has milk in it. :(((( We technically are at fault here. I always, I mean always check ingredients 20 times to just make sure. But I've merrily been Drinking Insomnia's chais for yearrrrrssss now. I've had my hand in owning a couple cafes in my past, and worked at a couple freakin good ones in Portland as well...and never have they added milk to the chai mix. So I just figured...none in it. I mean why? The spices in chai are amazing enough then you add your choice of milk to it, ie we did soy or hemp. But yes. They do. I felt terrible for not actually checking the ingredients, my 17 yr old daughter is vegan, not me. So I'm still learning here...but ack really? Another note, insomnia does not carry Soy milk anymore too. Just FYI. But aside from those couple things, this insomnia is awesome. The space itself is just PERFECT is if there is such a thing! :) I am studying for a couple classes right now and I find this Insomnia, (all of them actually but this one mostly), is just awesome in every way for a quiet yet active, quaint yet roomy, modern yet rustic place for all your needs. Calming beachy music in background, and this Insomnia has large picture windows that open to the semi bustling sidewalks of downtown Hillsboro. It's just great, I simply love the atmosphere. So you know when your in an unknown town...yelping away like crazy to find a perfect cafe that has good coffee, WiFi, maybe a good pastry or breakfast goody (if you get a desire for delicious carbs), cozy, and just the right cafe feel to it? I love Insomnia! It is a wonderful, fun place to have coffee. The coffee and other drinks are delicious! Most of the baked goods are fabulous - not all, but most. The atmosphere is cozy and friendly. The decor is shabby-chic/vintage, which is very fun. Here is the number one reason for my 2. They have Starbucks beat in their "uniqueness" and "locally-owned" charm along with the fact that they roast their own coffee (which, by the way, is EXTREMELY OVERPRICED, especially since practically all companies are roasting their own delicious coffee in the Portland Metro area). But...Starbucks has Insomnia beat hands down in the customer service arena. Long Bottom Coffee has Insomnia beat in the customer service area and baked goods area (not in coffee drinks if they come with whip cream, because their whip cream is not freshly made like Insomnia's.) Grand Central Cafe has Starbucks, insomnia and Long Bottom Coffee beat in Customer Service, quality of baked goods, and delicious coffee drinks made with locally roasted coffee beans. My experience: I was at this Insomnia Cafe location recently and ordered two Marionberry scones for me and my son. The scones were bland, salty, undercooked and had maybe 2 berries in each one. I picked the 2 berries out of mine and threw the rest in the garbage - $3.50. My son (20 years old) took one bite of his and decided not to eat it, because it was so bad. Since it was basically untouched, I decided to ask if we could get something else. I took it up to the cashier, showed it to her. I told her in a nice way with a smile on my face that it was terrible and that I had already thrown mine in the garbage. I asked if I could get something else instead. The cashier just looked at me and didn't even respond. She stood there with a blank look on her face. She didn't even say, "I'm sorry you didn't like them" or offer any kind of apologetic words. Finally I said, "Nevermind, I will just BUY a banana muffin and throw this in the garbage with the other one." She grabbed a muffin, told me they were a "staff and customer favorite" and charged me $3.50. I paid and thanked her. I had already left a $3.00 tip on my $17 tab for 2 scones and 2 medium drinks, so I did not leave another! I was disgusted. Starbucks would have given me something else and Grand Central would have emphatically apologized, given me replacements and added a few free baked goods for my trouble. This is excellent/stellar customer service. Another time I was at this same location with an almost full medium mocha. I was sitting at one of those shabby-chic tables with raised cracks between the boards. I was moving my mocha when it hit one of these cracks and fell over spilling more than 1/2 of my mocha. I asked the barista for a towel to clean it up. She didn't even respond and after finishing making a drink, she walked over and wiped up the spill. She didn't say anything to me or my friend. We thanked her and my friend hinted that maybe they could replace the spilled drink. Again the barista did not respond and walked away after we thanked her and profusely apologized for the mess. Again, if this were Starbucks, Long Bottom Coffee or Grand Central Café, they would have cleaned up my spill, taken the rest of my drink away and told me they would make me a new one. I wouldn't even have had to ask or hint about it. It is just their policy to make sure their customers are HAPPY and receive the VERY BEST service. INSOMNIA - maybe most of your customers do not care about good service, but I DO!! Not to mention, we are in COVID times and I NEVER see anyone sanitizing the tables. And since FOREVER this insomnia location is NOT the cleanest!! I was there late one night and mid-day the next day and the same crumbs were all over the floor from the night before. I may love your coffee drinks and your relaxed, fun atmosphere, but your customer service, baked goods and cleanliness DEFINITELY need some IMPROVEMENT! Start with a training program for all new employees and while you're at it, train the ones you already have! read more

Luckily, I was able to visit Insomnia pre-Covid. The atmosphere is cozy and welcoming...and who doesn't love chatting with friends amidst the aroma of freshly ground coffee beans? We ordered a drip coffee and caramel latte. The silky caramel is made in-house and complements the milky creaminess of the latte well. (Also, none of the plasticky taste of artificial caramel!) The latte definitely erred on the sweeter side; due to personal preference, I would have preferred less caramel and a stronger espresso punch. I'm unclear what roast was used for the drip coffee but it tasted like a medium roast. There was (what I perceive) to be a hint of licorice that lent some notes of, well, licorice to the coffee. The staff is always incredibly friendly and welcoming and willing to offer suggestions if you're a first time visitor familiarizing yourself with the menu. Glad to hear that they're opening a location in Beaverton and to hear that this small business is growing...in spite of the curveballs Covid has pitched! read more

This location is biggest by far and full of warm wood and a mix of modern and vintage charm. Treat yourself to a slice of housemade quiche and an Aztec Mocha (say yes to the whipped cream), and pick up a chocolate espresso cookie for the road. This little cafe is so cute. Even the espresso machine is a fun color. It's clean, and has lots of tables, big and small, and also a conference room available to rent. (There was a bridal shower happening in that room while I was there). They do have plugs but can be a little tricky to find, I love sitting along the wall to the right where they have the bench seats, plenty of electrical outlets there. And I also like that they bake their own pastries and it smells like coffee and baked goods all the time. Coffee is great, with their cold brew I didn't need a lot of sweetener. And they have lots of options for coffee and non-coffee drinkers. Great local addition to the community, will be coming back (often). The only weird thing was that the front door they kept propped open that day, when I was there, and flies were everywhere. read more

The new location is very spacious. They have lots of long tables and some booths, perfect for group study or discussions. There wasn't ant good coffee shop in Downtown Hillsboro to sit, read and relax and Insomnia fulfills all those. On weekdays they open at 6am and close at 10pm. The weekend hours are shorter. If you have never tried coffee from Insomnia before you must get the black forest mocha and cappuccino . They are my two favorites. They also have some good breakfast sandwiches and cookies. The barista working there told me, the new location has a conference space inside which can hold around 20-25 people. It will be available for rent starting summer. I am excited that Insomnia is finally here in downtown, opening up new possibilities and opportunities for those who live in the area. read more

This joint is a great addition to Main Streer and I'm happy to have them here. Good coffee, though the espresso drinks can be a little inconsistent. Pastries are delightful and appear to change daily. Lots of seating where you can park for a long time and enjoy company or study. On an adorable downtown main street, amazing baking smells, and great apricot green tea. They have a conference room for community meetings, too. The only thing that stops me from going in more often is their on/off Internet connection. It's a bit frustrating to be online and to experience too many instances of downtime. Hence the four stars.
