This experience was years in the making for me. I've been on a holistic healing journey, especially with managing my MS, and removing my mercury fillings has been on my bucket list for nearly 9 years. I remember calling Dr. Paul Rubin back then, hoping one day I'd go through with it. I didn't realize until recently that this is the same clinic, now led by Dr. Birrer, and it's even in the same building I work in. It felt incredibly full circle and serendipitous. During my appointment, Goldie and Dr. Birrer were amazing. I have anxiety when it comes to needles, and Dr. Birrer was so gentle, patient, and understanding. He took his time, made sure I was comfortable, and approached everything with such a calm and reassuring energy that completely changed the experience for me. At one point, I had tears rolling down my face, but they were happy tears. I couldn't believe I was finally doing something I had dreamed about for so long, and everything was going so smoothly. BEST DENTAL EXPERIENCE I'VE EVER HAD!!! I am a new patient at Integrative Dental and cannot begin to say how wonderful the experience was. Dr Do and the entire staff were fantastic from start to finish! Scheduling my appointment was a breeze thanks to Erinn and Ro who manage the front office and phones. Before even arriving at the appointment they were so patient, kind, and answered all (and I had many!) of my questions about holistic dentistry and pricing estimates which was so helpful to know upfront. The office itself is beautiful and has a calm, peaceful energy. As someone who suffers from chronic illness even little touches like a sign asking people to not wear fragrances due to chemically sensitive patients was a touch that let me know I was in the right place. Then I met Brenda, my dental assistant who is one of the most lovely people I've ever met. Every step of the way she made me feel comfortable, safe, and well taken care of. Dr Do echoed the experience and could not have been a more talented, caring dentist. As someone with severe dental anxiety, he coached me through every step of the 4.5 hour appointment and did INCREDIBLE work! In addition to the great staff, gorgeous office, the protocols they use to ensure minimal exposure to toxins are top of the line. I am SO thankful to have Dr. Birrer as our family dentist. He is our dentist for life! He's very empathetic, very skilled & we know we are in the best of care. He definitely puts the patients needs as main priority; I've never felt like I was trying to be pushed to do something I didn't feel good about. He has strong convictions around health of the whole body, about not putting anything in your body that may compromise your health now or down the road which is so rare these days and is such a gift. I had to have a pretty big filling done recently by Dr. Birrer. I was pretty nervous going in. Dr. Birrer was so kind and reassuring that I was able to be at peace and I was truly amazed at how painless the entire process actually was. I hardly felt a thing and it was definitely way worse in my mind beforehand than what actually what was! I was in good hands. I also needed a tooth extraction yesterday with Dr. Do and let me tell you, I was also very nervous about this as I've had tooth extractions before that were no fun! I was nervous about the cracking, drilling, pulling, etc. but once again it was nothing like how I thought it would be! Dr. Do was incredible!! I hardly felt a thing and I hardly heard anything!! I didn't hear any grinding noises or cracking noises. He has surprisingly fast and the whole process was much smoother than I could have imagined. He did an outstanding job! He too was very kind, present and had a calming presence about him. All I needed afterwards was some ibuprofen and Tylenol to help a bit afterwards. It's also so nice that the dentists here have a text line available if needed. I was able to text Dr. Birrer and he actually called me back and answered all my questions and helped me process about a decision I needed to make regarding a specific tooth. He was just there with me, listening patiently and processing with me so patiently. I never once felt rushed to make a decision. What a gift! Every staff member I've met here at Integrative Dentistry has been so wonderful to work with. The assistants David, Brenda, Lee, (& others whom I'm blanking on names) and all the front desk staff members are all 5-stars. I also was able to get the immune support IV drip after my tooth extraction and working with Dr. J Daneals (sp?) was a pleasure as well. She's very knowledgeable, kind & has a big heart of gold to help people thrive in health. Id also like to note that the atmosphere here is one of cleanliness, health & beauty. I've never seen dust or dirty anything. The bathrooms are always so clean and nice. Beautiful artwork. Plants are all well-tended. Blankets are offered and they have other special "cozy" things available if a patient would like. It's just a nice place to be. I also have needed to bring my 3 month old baby with me and when I needed to "pump and dump" after my tooth extraction they offered me a private room. So thoughtful! I have 5 daughters and they all love coming here as well for their cleanings and dental work. (My husband does as well)! We drive from Seatac and sometimes it's over an hr with traffic to get here but it's worth the drive for us to be at this dentist office. I've been a patient at this clinic for some time, but unfortunately, my recent experience has left me very disappointed and uncomfortable as I have never once been treated like this by healthcare professionals. At my last visit, I declined X-rays because I have no dental issues: no cavities, no watches, no concerns, and a perfectly stable history for years. Despite this, the hygienist told me in a very cold and dismissive tone that X-rays are mandatory every two years. When I expressed that I didn't feel they were necessary, her demeanor became noticeably frosty for the rest of the appointment. When the dentist (Dr. Do) came in, he doubled down, even asking the hygienist if it was even allowed for a patient to decline X-rays. He then told me, quite bluntly and in a way that felt threatening, that if I don't agree to the X-rays at my next visit, I would no longer be allowed to remain a patient at this all-cash clinic. It was a clear message: comply or leave. There was no respect for patient choice, no open dialogue, just pressure and ultimatums. I left feeling deeply uncomfortable with their approach to patient care. I can no longer recommend this practice to anyone who values autonomy and respect in their healthcare decisions. They are friendly as long as you do what THEY want, instead of what you want. Weird, considering it's my health and mouth. Guess I'll have to stop paying $400+ for cleanings and get them for free with my insurance. The interesting part is, after being a patient for a while, there is not much "holistic" practice about this place besides bacteria swabbing (which they are unhelpful in ways to get rid of the bacteria besides recommending daily oral habits) and pH strips ($4 on Amazon). read more

Both the hygienists and dentists have been very high turnover since Dr. Ruben left. My son is autistic, and I asked the staff to put detailed notes in his file about what to do and not do for him. They clearly don't read the notes, and we have had some issues where my son ended up refusing care because they were so awful. I had a crown done there. It broke within the first year, the dentist I saw to deal with the painful mess said it was defective. When I contacted them they refused to stand by their work. Dr Marder, who was terrific, did the original work and had retired. They tried to get him to refund me funds from his retirement account instead of the practice dealing with it. It was very unprofessional. A local social service agency had paid for the crown and they didn't care. Not caring or professional people. read more

Not a recommended practice for oral surgery I have some advice for you if Dr Cao says that you need a tooth extraction (in my case, an incisor tooth in the front of my mouth): 1) have a discussion about the procedure well before the day it happens, 2) know that this practice will implant a prothesis with ceramic screws (not used by most periodontist practices), 3) understand that they will use only Novocain and nitrous oxide for the procedure (in contrast to the additional sedation that is offered by oral surgeons). I went through a three-hour procedure on February 10, 2025, during which Dr Cao broke my tooth off in the root canal in my upper gum. She used inadequate sedation and anesthesia, and it was the most painful dental or surgical procedure I have had in my life. The dentists and periodontists I received second opinions from were mystified by Dr Cao's failure to send me to an oral surgeon and her use of ceramic rather than titanium screws, like my hips, to attach the prothesis (again, drilled into my bone without sufficient anesthesia). I hope you go to a specialist and do not have the experience I had with Integrative Dentistry. If you want to chance it with this practice, make sure the procedure is DISCUSSED with you well before the information is given to you for the first time in a consent 15 minutes before the procedure. I have left more than one positive review for this practice and tried to settle this matter in an amicable fashion but I guess this is what we've got. read more

When I started with this dental office [years ago], they asked for my email address in order to communicate as necessary, so I gave it to them. Immediately, they started spamming me - emails to "keep me informed about what's going on in their employees lives" - nothing to do with business. I consider spam to be extremely rude, and an abuse of the privilege and convenience of email contact. I asked them nicely to stop the spam; they didn't. I told them I would block them if they didn't stop; they didn't. So I blocked them and informed them that email was no longer a way to contact me. Normally, I don't do business with spammers, but the dental service at Integrative Dentistry is excellent, so I gave them a second chance. A few weeks ago, I arrived for my ten o'clock appointment at 09:53, after driving for an hour and a distance of twenty miles. The receptionist told me, "We canceled your appointment; the hygienist couldn't make it into the office. We emailed you two days ago." We argued a bit about why they didn't make a follow-up call, since they knew email was probably not an option, and in the end, I offered to wait around for an hour or so such that they could fit me in. Her response, "Oh, we have no open appointments today", and she refused to fit me in - it would inconvenience them. What about the inconvenience to me - two hours and about twenty dollars in mileage? An appointment is an agreement [contract] between two parties - I agree to be at a certain place at a specified time; they agree to provide a service at that time. They are in breach of contract. I can understand that things sometimes happen that we all have to make adjustments to the schedule; I was willing to meet them half way by waiting awhile. They were not willing to meet me halfway. Some businesses have two email addresses - one for the spam and one for legitimate business. This business doesn't seem to care that some of their customers find spam deplorable. They do give good service, but their business model is crying for updating. read more

It's interesting to see an edit to Dr. Birrer's comment now, since it is 15 months after my review. In his comments, he writes "I've also never in my life left a bad review; if I have a problem with a business or my experience within a business, I let the business owner know personally." Well, that's what I attempted to do when I directly spoke to Dr. Cao about my dissatisfaction with the pressure I felt to pay for procedures that weren't necessary and because the last few visits sounded like hard sales scripts from the receptionist. Dr. Birrer: your tone in your replies to these reviews, not just mine, but other 1-2 star ones sound defensive, accusatory, as if the patient is to blame for feeling the way they do, which verges on gaslighting (which is a form of psychological abuse aimed at instilling doubt in the person for their experience) and there are even places where you come off as condescending. Instead of writing multiple paragraphs to show how you're right and the patient is wrong, how about simply taking responsibility and offering an apology? If you're a potential client reading this, if you look through the 1-2 star reviews, you'll see a common theme: feeling pressured to pay for procedures that don't seem necessary, having your concerns dismissed, and being invalidated for your experience. It would be interesting to see the correlation of these kinds of reviews and when Dr. Birrer took over the practice from Dr. Rubin. read more

Integrative Dentistry has changed ownership and dentists and there was some tension in the process. The bottom line is that it has been a superb dental practice since its inception. Dr Marder provided excellent care to me for over three decades. I remained with the practice after the transition and saw no change in the quality of care. I started going here about 9 years ago when I moved to WA on the recommendation of my old dentist. Dr Rubin was great and even tho I was a little nervous about what would happen when he retired, I have no disappointments in who he handed the practice to. The hygienists all remain very skilled, gentle, and personable (during my most recent visit, the hygienist Emily said verbatim, "If anything is uncomfortable please let me know.") Dr Cao is my favorite. She always remembers me, is straightforward, skilled, well-trained, and competent. I am confident trusting her to have my mouths best-interests in mind. (Bonus: she's also kind and will answer any and all questions). I love that at every cleaning, they take a swab from your mouth to see what bacteria are floating around, then they put it on a monitor so you can see it! (And they have a handy chart explaining what the bacteria are and if you should be concerned). Seeing this for nearly the past 10 years has really helped me understand and track what goes on in my mouth, what I can do to keep it healthy, and answers that nagging feeling when things don't feel quite "clean". I would absolutely recommend going here. Yes it can be expensive so make sure they take your insurance (imo all dentistry is expensive but it's the only mouth you get!) If you're hesitant I'd say just come for one cleaning, try it out. If you don't learn something new or feel like your mouth got the care it deserves, at least then you'll know for yourself. This is a reply to Dr. Birrer. Maybe you need to look a bit closer at how your patients are being treated by someone like Emily, who can be average at one appointment and vindictive at another. This had nothing to do with just X-rays, this had to do with being criticized, mistreated, having Emily incur pain to be vindictive, and lying to the doctor at my visit. I think you need to have a closer look at how patients are being treated by her. BTW she never cleaned my teeth either- just one tooth. Seems a bit odd because she was so criticizing, she couldn't even perform her job effectively. Seeing several one star reviews, I must not be too far off the mark. I was a patient of Dr. Rubin and Dr. Marder for almost ten years before this practice was taken over by Doctor Birrer. I have not been happy with the new staff and new procedures. I used to get my teeth (ALL) cleaned and polished 1-2 times a year. The cost was about $125. This year I made three appointments to have my teeth cleaned, and each time, after examining the oral bacteria, I was told they didn't have time to clean my teeth and I would have to come back. At the 2 nd appointment, after the bacteria exam, I practically begged the hygienist to clean my teeth, and what she did was press a tool on the side of one of my front teeth for a few seconds, and then repeat it on 3-4 other teeth. The "cleaning" took less than 2 minutes. I was charged $160 for the appointment. At the 3 rd appointment, the same thing happened. I begged again, and this person used an electronic scaler on a few front teeth This "cleaning" took less than 3 minutes. I was charged $163 for the appointment. No one explained there were new procedures. No one asked me if I was in agreement. No one looked in my file to see that I requested hand cleaning and polishing and not electronic scaling. I tried to explain to the office manager that I hadn't had a real teeth cleaning. She argued with me and told me I had. I paid this dental office over $700 for what I didn't want. From my first phone call with Gina to get scheduled, I felt comfortable and taken care of. Dr. Marder recommendation I am 78 years old with a history of illnesses related to my thyroid, lungs, back and stomach. During the last year I have had 3 dentists and another medical practitioner suggest I should have between 1 and 4 teeth extracted in order to treat decay and my overall health. Dr. Marder was recommended because of his reputation for carefully diagnosing what needs to be done and his excellent treatments. After learning of the various diagnoses, he took a 3-D x-ray of my entire mouth and validated the one instance of decay under a crown in a molar that needed to be treated. He removed the crown and the decay which was very close to the nerve and put on a temporary crown. I am waiting to see if the tooth will survive before getting a permanent crown. Otherwise the tooth will have to be extracted. Regarding other suspicious teeth, he has recommended I see a Naturopath who specializes in the impact of dental issues on the health of other parts of the body. I appreciate his careful, thoughtful and disciplined approach to dentistry. He desires to minimize the amount of work done in order to preserve as many of my teeth as possible. While he was working on the tooth, I found him to be very efficient and effective. His well trained staff work closely with him. I found them to also be very knowledgeable. They were able to provide additional counseling regarding the care I received. They were also very professional and friendly. I found Dr. Marder to be very friendly. He took great pains to explain everything he found. He followed up with a personal phone call after my visit to see how I was doing. I look forward to continuing to work with Dr. Marder and his staff as I believe he will only do work that is needed to improve my dental health and my overall health. I have been Seeing Dr. Marder since he worked out of a one person walk-up office on University Way (1983). Mitch is about to retire from the practice he built and while I'm sad that the practice has grown larger and necessarily less personalized, times have changed and it was inevitable. That said, the thoughtfulness of the staff, the attention to detail on display, the commitment to their patients has, in my view, remained unchanged. Seems like a racket. I used to see Dr. Ruben and loved his practice and hygienist. Now it seems like all they're only interested in money. My hygienist (who was extreme rude and unkind) told me I needed to have a preiopath (bacterial test) done which cost $200+...I did the test at her request but the results were never discussed and were completely arbitrary. Next I was told I need to have a deep clean/debridment since it had been so long since I'd been to the dentist. They told me this procedure would take place over 4 appointments - low and behold it was all completed in one appointment (I don't think I even needed it) however I of course still had to pay the $2000+ for the procedure. And the original reason I went there (a slightly swollen/irritated spot on my gums) is still there after working with them for almost a year. They've neglected to focus on the area I'm having problems with by dismissing it and instead will only insist that I get an old cavity filled (that doesn't bother me). read more

I have been coming to Dr. Marder for over 15 years. And so do both of my kiddos since they were 3 yr old. (neither have had any tears at the office, fear of going to the dentist, and only 1 cavity a piece). On the whole, I find him and his staff to be knowledgeable, mindful, empathetic, compassionate, and kind. Whenever I or my kid's have had an issue with staff or procedure, Dr. Marder addresses it and makes it right. When my 10yo son had an appt. and needed x-rays and impressions taken. He was very curious about everything that was going on. Chris was very patient with him and involved him in every aspect possible. They saved my broken tooth. This place would've gotten 10 stars for that alone. I went to Integrative Dentistry with a list of *requests* and a 10 year avoidance of dentists. Yes, 10 years. I feel bad enough already. Since I thought my mouth was in horrible shape, I asked if they could save my broken tooth without a root canal, work my teeth over with some cleaning magic and not make me feel like I chewed a tree for 30 minutes. After multiple cleanings (which went awesomely), lots of x-rays, germ swabs (which are digital) and explanations, Dr. Marder and his team saved my broken tooth without getting a root canal. Having Navy Seals in my mouth is the closest description that comes to mind when describing my experience. I was given infrared healing treatments and homeopathic for nerve damage. I was given remineralization drops to help strengthen my other and I was congratulated that despite my 10 years of avoidance, my teeth were in darn good shape. Service and a smile! I had a wonderful experience at Dr. Marder's office, but I liked to address a few of the bad reviews which I think were honest misunderstandings since I didn't have many issues at all. Here are the major complaints I read. Exhibit A - Pricing: After my initial consultation (which was about 140.00), I simply asked for a quote. In 5 minutes, I had a print up of all cost in my hands and the option to choose what got done. Exhibit B - Payment: You have to pay for all your work upfront. Since this is a holistic dentist, some insurance companies won't work with them. So it's always good to return to Exhibit A. When I gave the claims office my insurance, they kindly filed the appropriate paper work and I received a check at my house a week later. Exhibit C - Insurance: I called Dr. Marder's office before and asked if they took my insurance. They told me yup and that was that. Exhibit D - Where's the Doc?: So there are a lot of hygienists there and they are all skilled. I had two lovely women do my cleaning/deep cleaning extremely well and Dr. Marder did the specialized work. Maybe I'm weird, but I'm okay with that. If you go to your GP, the resident nurse/aide takes your blood pressure, weight, height and temp before the big guns are called in; so why would a dentist be any different? read more

In August of 2019 I knew I had a tooth that need to be extracted. I went to Integrative Dentistry because I was referred by a friend. They did three dimensional x-rays of my whole mouth on the first visit and confirmed that the tooth need to be removed. I scheduled the removal for the following week. When I got there I was surprised that they had a hygienist clean my teeth because I had declined this service when they asked previously. The reason being that I had just had them cleaned a month prior. They subsequently admitted that it was a mistake. They still charged me however. Upon having the tooth removed I had pain on the adjacent tooth. I thought it was something that would go away after awhile. I went in for a follow up exam and cleaning about 5 months later in January. I told the part time hygienist that the tooth next to the one taken out hurt. I assumed the Dr. would come in and examine her previous work and address my concern. This follow up was expressly recommended by them for this purpose. The Dr. never came in and I was dismissed. But not before the hygienist sold me about $100 of superfluous product making my total bill $250 for this trip and well over $2,000 in total at this office. The hygienist recommended that I come back in 4 months but it turned into 5 months because of Covid. At the time of that appointment the Dr. did see me. She took x-rays of the problem tooth and determined that I needed a root canal. She informed me that they don't do root canals there but they do do implants. She proceeded to try to sell me a $8,000 dollar implant. This was the second time they had tried this. The wanted to sell me an implant when I had my tooth removed. "When we first met on August 2nd of last year, you had a fractured tooth (#31) that had become infected. As a first priority we focused on reviewing the area of primary concern and scheduling for the extraction of this tooth. That day I made note to myself "to bring [you] back for a comprehensive exam for further treatment" because it was clear to me there were other things going on we should circle back to after first taking care of the urgent situation." "Abscesses can exist for many years before they become symptomatic (painful); this is the main reason we take three-dimensional x-rays for all patients with many crowned teeth and/or root canals. Looking at the three-dimensional x-ray (CBCT) that was taken on your first day, it's clear that #30 was already decayed and had begun to abscess at that time." So it was clear on August 3 that I had a cavity. What is the point in having those fancy and costly 3D x-rays if you don't look at them? Furthermore he says that there is an abscess and there is No Abscess according to the two dentists I visited subsequently. It's clear to me that had I received professional service from Integrative Dentistry from day one I would have had a simple cavity repair instead of a $2,000 root canal.
