Our experience at Intermezzo for our anniversary dinner was disappointing. Upon showing up for our reservation, we were taken to a table out front where it was cold and lacked ambiance. When we asked to be moved to one of the many open tables inside, we were told that they were reserved. They sat empty for our whole meal. We felt so bad for our server. I'm not sure if they were short staffed that night, but he was literally running between indoor and outdoor tables. Because he was spread so thin, service severely suffered and we sat waiting at every point of our meal. It was strange to find that a restaurant with "wine cask" in the title didn't have a wine list. We went with a red when our server verbally noted the small list of options. The food was fine, but not specifically memorable. We had the Cask Burger and the Lemon Caper Chicken but everyone around us seemed to be going with the pizza, so perhaps that's the way to go. We didn't end up ordering dessert to celebrate the occasion because we didn't want to prolong the experience. read more

The three different dining spaces were all very inviting. I've been in to eat and drink at the Bar, which was fun to meet the staff and diners all around us. And so much fun to eat their delicious selection of pizzas, and pair them with some incredible wines and/or cocktails. Definitely looking forward to dining at their Sunday Brunch. For our recent dining adventure we had a table in the middle section, which was well lit and very comfortable. We were greeted by our server Elizabeth, who took very good care of us. From start to finish, she was there with some food suggestions, and along with her supporting staff, they took very good care of us. For dinner we shared the Mezzo Meatballs, Rosemary Beet & Strawberry Salad, my favorite, the Lemon Caper Chicken, and the Oven Roasted Salmon. For wine pairing we had a bottle of the Seghesio Zinfandel, quite possibly one of the best producers of Zinfandel up in Sonoma County. For dessert, the classic Banana Split Sundae, and the Traditional Chocolate Cake. Still so much more on the menu to endulge in, we are looking forward to visiting Elizabeth and Intermezzo By Wine Cask again. read more

We were looking for a last minute spot to eat and stumbled upon this restaurant/wine bar on a side alley. I think the main entrance was on the back street. It was close to closing but the manager set us up a table anyway. (We were turned away from a couple other places bc it was late) The food was delicious. I had the Salmon which was cooked and seasoned perfectly. Also shared a bottle of Pinot Noir. The ambience of the place was nostalgic and cool, displaying pictures of rock n roll memorabilia. Stopped by Intermezzo before a show at the Lobero Theater and had a perfect pre theater experience. The classic martini was crisp and well-made, while the espresso martini was smooth and rich, just what I needed to kick off the evening. We split a mixed greens salad and sausage pizza that was very tasty. With a crisp Chardonnay, this was a memorable dining experience in Santa Barbara. We will be back. read more

I reserved a private room for 8-10 people off the bar for a celebration of my daughter's graduation from UCSB. They decorated the table impeccably- with personalized menu card, crisp white linens, adorable graduation confetti on the table, beautiful place settings and flowers. Jenny the manager was top notch and paid attention to every detail. Her customer service was absolutely first class - honestly the whole thing was done with such class and beauty. We came early and set up balloons and a door decoration that Jenny helped us with. We brought cupcakes and she plated them for us. I had a glass of Pino Grigio that Jenny chose for me and it was heaven. Now let's talk food - they provided unlimited pizzas and ceasar salads - my goodness these pizzas were delicious! Pepperoni, Margarita, cheese and sausage - not greasy, fresh dough with perfect crunch and rich elegant sauces. The salad was served with large croutons and crispy romaine lettuce and homemade dressing - so flavorful and fresh. They had iced tea lemonade and water as well. This was a fabulous experience and I highly recommend for any occasion! For what we got - high quality, pristine presentation and excellent service - it was priced reasonably. Intermezzo has always piqued my interest with its elegant white linen tables and cozy fireplace. I've walked by on numerous occasions but never found the right opportunity to dine here. Maybe because of its enigmatic culinary identity: is it pizza, Mexican, or steak? Add on the uncertainty of its dress code, I just felt too intimidated to casually stop by. Well, tonight, an unexpected, non-negotiable tug on the end of my leash from my dog finally brought my husband and I through its doors, even though we weren't in fine dining attire. Finding the entrance was a challenge due to the multiple patios and confusing interior dining areas. So we flagged down a staff member and we were seated right away. Contrary to my assumptions, the menu was neither Mexican nor Italian. I'd best describe it as an American French fusion, featuring items like French onion soup, steaks, chicken, oysters, pizza, hamburgers, and an extensive wine selection. Having already eaten earlier, I decided to sample their French onion soup, while my husband tried the ravioli. Both dishes were impressive. Exquisite balance of flavors! It truly felt like an authentic Santa Barbara dining experience - the way it should be - upscale and carefully prepared. Though prices were slightly above average, they were far from prohibitive. For instance, a burger was priced at a reasonable $20. We also sampled desserts - crème brûlée and a chocolate truffle slice. Each had a pleasantly restrained sweetness. Despite our casual attire, the staff treated us (and the pup) with kindness and professionalism throughout our visit. Our spontaneous dining experience at Intermezzo turned out to be a memorable end to our evening. This would be a great date night spot or a place to bring out of town guests. Overall, five stars. From the absolutely beautiful architecture and accouterments throughout, the outstanding service and lovely ambiance really add to a wonderful experience. Great spot we had seen but never tried. Worth it! Great staff. Accommodating and good customer service. Russ was our server and he took really good care of us with wine suggestions and good recommendations- ask for him. We started with the beet salad and pate as well as the arugula salad. All generous servings with solid ingredients and complexity. The beets had pesto as well as a vinaigrette and watercress but also had goat cheese...nice sweet savoury combo. The pate was-accompanied by the mustards and jams as well as a pile of pickles. Worked well and the salt drew out the flavor. Washed it down with some Cremant and a Syrah. The pizza was the interlude. It was not quite NY style but was good... nice b flavors and good cheese. The steak was excellent and the frites were just right in crispness and salt. Came to celebrate my birthday with my boyfriend on Saturday. One of the first things you notice is all of their friendly staff. Everyone was very attentive. We started off with a cheese board with homemade crackers. I had a Lemonade Stand cocktail and the Orchard's Ablaze if you like mezcal. This was some of the worst service I have ever received. We had a 6:45 reservation. Waited 5 minutes to order drinks which is fine... ordered cocktails and a bottle of Barolo and asked them to open it. Cocktails took about 15 minutes. Asked again about the Barolo. About 30 minutes later, they tell us they do not have that wine. Which is fine, but we wanted to get a bottle opened to breathe so when we ordered a different one we weren't able to do that. Our table was touched by the server far less than other tables around us. We got our second course before we were even done with our salad. Then at the end of the night we were just sitting there waiting for someone to come take our coffee or dessert order or even ask if we wanted the check and nobody came. Would have spent even more than we did, but nobody came. I almost suggested starting to walk out so they'd notice us and give us the bill. We wanted to spend so much more money there and just weren't even able to because of the horrible service. We still tipped over 20% on our $300 bill which again we were hoping would be even more. Won't be going back even though food was amazing. read more

Yesterday, we went to Intermezzo to try it out. It was pouring rain outside and very cold. We arrived at 7 minutes before 5PM. The front door was open so we went inside. We were immediately greeted by a tall man with blond hair in a very rude tone "we are not open". My friend said incredulously "you want us to wait outside?' He then said we could stay inside. When we tried to sit at a table in front of the fireplace, the same rude man stated "that is reserved". We then asked which table we could sit on. He responded that the reason people should not come in beforehand is that the waitress knows which table is reserved and which ones are not. If they don't want people to come in, they should keep the doors locked. Eventually we ended up sitting at the bar. We ordered salmon; my friend asked for "well done" and I asked for "regular". The waiter came and stated "2 well done salmon". I responded that I asked for regular. He then took my plate and a minute later, he came back with the same salmon and said "this is the regular", which was a total lie. I told him it was OK as I didn't want to press the issue, especially as it was my friend's birthday. Also the music was not appealing and too loud. This was a very disappointing experience. Mizza on State street downtown has a similar menu, but with exceptional friendliness, great chefs who listen to what people want, and much better pricing for food and wine. The 2 stars are for the location and ambiance. read more

This is one of our favorite restaurants and has been for years. The food is impeccable, the wine is outstanding in selection. The room between tables, ambiance and location is awesome. The service is hit or miss, consistently. Two weeks ago we had such outstanding service that we went again this week to wait 45 minutes for beverages which arrived after our meal. The meals came out with the appetizer, I had to ask for the salad which seemed to surprise our server. And to his credit, he brought us one pretty fast but then we had our salad, appetizer and entree on the table all at the same time. We asked for the drink twice, and only after three other tables that were seated after us got their beverages. So the short version of this review is beware. The food awesome, the service could set your date off to a really nice or awkward start depending on whether you are served or forgotten. read more

First time doing parents night with our friends while visiting Santa Barbara and we came to Intermezzo. The drinks (amazing), the food (delicious), the service (5 star), and the ambiance all made this a wonderful evening! Highly recommend the cocktails - our server was the one who created them and uses such fresh ingredients for each one. At the time we were there, he had a cocktail named after his son and he told us all about the process behind creating each drink. Talk about a craft cocktail! The patio here is magical too, I love all the little lights and it was nice and warm even on the crisp evening on which we visited. We did the cheese/charcuterie board, two pizzas, and two sides, and it was more than enough food. Everything was excellent! Can't go wrong with anything on this menu. read more

I came to Intermezzo after chatting with the owner, John, at a cafe. I've lived in SB a few years but was not familiar with his restaurant. Fast forward two weeks; my boyfriend and I had a date night dinner here. Everything about the experience was wonderful. We sat outdoors in a covered courtyard with plenty of heaters. It was a chilly evening but we were nice and warm. We orderd a few drinks, oysters, and two specials: steak frites and a soppressata pizza. Everything was delicious and the service was on point--friendly, professional, and just the right amount of attention. The frites were piping hot and came with a yummy aioli. Fiesta 20024 Our bartender was drunk. The bartender with the tattoos was drinking and appeared a little drunk. He was cussing and talking about micro dosing. I don't care about any of that but not very professional. And when he forgot my husband's cocktail completely that wasn't good. And when I tried to order a pineapple cocktail with a passion fruit foam he didn't want to do it apparently because he told me they ran out of the foam. Then literally not even 10 minutes later he made 3 right in front of me (I was sitting at the bar) because people at a table ordered them. So lame. read more

The details are what make this restaurant exceptional. My husband and I will often sit at the bar here for a casual but delicious meal while we talk with the bartender about the different liquors they have... including A Midwinter Nights Dram by High West, which was an exciting find. Last night we ordered Johnny's Medicine and the Monte Carlo - neither was disappointing. Last night the place was busy! The hostess was so friendly and kept us entertained while we waited. But after only waiting 5 or 10 minutes, one of the bar tables opened up. Our server was Russ and he was very friendly and attentive. My husband said something along the lines of 'there are many great servers, but Russ treats his job like a craft' which I think sums it up. Okay now for the burgers. I am not typically much of a burger person, while my husband is a connoisseur. I had a craving for one so we went for the same dish and WOW. I was blown away. My husband said it is the best burger he's ever had. Again, the details were taken care of; perfectly soft bun, well seasoned and perfectly cooked patty, delicious caramelized onions and cheese, and that's about it. Anyway, for someone who could take or leave a burger most of the time, I felt compelled to write a review. NYE perfection! We had the beautiful private dining room to ring in the New Year...and boy oh boy, what a special 3 course menu. Our party of 10 tried just about everything on the menu. The food was elegant, unique - the Grilled Filet Mignon Au Poive was the best I have had in years; Foraged & Cultivated Mushroom Vol-Au-Vent was fun and fabulous. The wine - special tasting menu for the evening was a great pairing for our amazing dinner (found a new favorite Cab). And then the service - we were spoiled from the moment we arrived. Intermezzo is always a great choice!!! My wife and I have been enjoying this elevated Santa Barbara dining experience for years. All of our friends from out of town always make a point that we have to make a stop here during their stay. The food is always prepared magnificently with the freshest of food. The cocktails, you can tell so much thought was putting into every drink. It's the little things that make a restaurant great. For example, all staff is so informed about all the menu items, to the bussers who are attentive to every little detail. Keep up the phenomenal work intermizzo! Nelson is the MAN! Anything you can think of, cocktail wise, he will shake up with gusto! My partner and I came in on Christmas Eve, looking to settle our sorrows from Christmas shopping with a delicious libation, he welcomed us to the bar with open arms.
