There's something off with the espresso. Either it's old & low quality, not the right grind and/or the machine needs a clean. I had a latte, and it had this mouth feel like it was coating my tongue and just tasted of bitterness. I looked on my visor mirror and sure enough, it left a brown coating on my tongue. Very unpleasant. That and the soggy paper straw. The paninis are good. Salads fresh and that maple vinaigrette perfectly balanced. The pizza however. F for effort there. The sauce is too sweet and right out of the can. You can taste the can on it. Iola, WI. Perhaps an OK place for lunch, but apparently the focus is on gelato for children. The flavors are bright and shiny and have names like "Cookie Dough". I have had a few flavors in the past that had names like "Coffee". The more grown up flavors were quite tasty but not to be had on this trip. The real reason for our return here was for lunch. We ordered a Hawaiian (Pineapple and Ham) sandwich, a Reuben, and a turkey pesto sandwich. Our waitress was timid and not forthcoming with information. She took our order and our food was ready 30 minutes later. Our small group was the only table being served, another table had already been served. I was getting hungry during that wait and was surprised at the miniature sandwiches that arrived. My Reuben was supposed to be on rye but was served with one of those fluffy two toned breads that have no taste. The sandwich tasted very good, just not enough of it. The sauerkraut was in there but had no distinctive taste at all.My mother liked her Hawaiian sandwich, the size was good for her. My sisters turkey pesto was good but "That's About All". "Too Small" she added. So our waitress completely disappeared after dropping off our dishes. Apparently she doesn't bring the check to the table here, you go to the register. My mother wanted a refill on her coffee so we had to track her down. It took her 15 minutes to refill the coffee. But it wasn't a refill per se. She brought out a new cup! When I paid the bill I was astounded that she charged me for two cups at three dollars each. So here is my brief summation of this place: Food tastes OK. No refills on coffee. Pay at the register, not at the table. Kids meal sized portions. Candy flavored gelato. The vacuous atmosphere of a failing business (OK Maybe That's Too Harsh? Just Seemed Like It). read more

The Door county salad is delicious! The pizza is filling. The gelato is made in house and always fresh. Sunset Lake park, the best small beach in the state, is a short scenic drive from here. Have passed by a number of times while visiting here this past summer, and decided to go in today. Parking: situated on the north side of town just above the post office on the east side. She airing on the side holds about 8 cars, but there is parking along the street in front. Atmosphere: large tables inside and there are some tables outside in front of the cafe. Got somewhat busy around 12:30pm for lunch. Cozy cafe style atmosphere. Service: quick and attentive. As with most of the restaurants in town, the staff is moving around quite a bit but also come back to the table every now and then. My order was taken and about 5 minutes later, my cappuccino was ready and about 5 minutes after that., my order was at the table. Waitress would stop and chat a little bit. Friendly atmosphere all in all. Food: known for their gelato ice cream, they have some soups, salads and panini style sandwiches. I ordered a Moroccan chicken panini sandwich with a side of potato salad, cappucini, and a medium gelato-half caramel cashew goat cheese (yupp, goat cheese) and half blueberry cheesecake. Potato salad-good, sandwich-good(curry spicy but not overwhelming) gelato-great. Actually, I liked the blueberry cheesecake but the goat cheese was great. Nasty waitress alert. No one was in here and her impatient face with us thinking about what to order?!? So rude. Saw her go complain to other people to a couple of locals out loud. My friend I was with is in her 70s and was so sweet and didn't even notice how awful she was to her. Oh and the food? Sad. Buy a panini maker and there you can make this lunch at home. A Gelato Oasis in the middle of Wisconsin! The Millstone is road-side gem in the small town of Iola (population around 1300). It also serves light lunch-style fare (we had their grilled cheese on sour-dough) and has a beautiful espresso machine. But beyond the simple but delicious culinary delights, what my wife and I really loved about this sweet little destination is the interior which includes an array of salvaged and refurbished "architectural elements from many schools, churches, post offices, and other historic buildings" from around Wisconsin. (the quote is from a small brochure which lists where all the different pieces are sourced from). AND the water turbine formerly used to grind corn has been repurposed to provide electricity for the Millstone! We were on a late-summer journey from Steven's Point to Sunset Lake for a swim, and stopped in. I tried the Dark Chocolate Gelato (yum!) and my wife had the blackberry (double yum!)... my wife's mother had the peanut butter chocolate chip (triple yum!). By the way if you're not familiar with Gelato, it's Italian style ice-cream, which uses less sugar than typical ice-cream and milk (instead of cream) but it's miraculously MORE flavorful than ice-cream. This is one of my favorite places to visit for an afternoon lunch in the area. The setting is superb, the food is excellent, and if you're lucky you'll get to meet and speak with The owner Tom and his wife Melody. If you have the time, take a canoe ride in the lake behind the mill or better yet ask for a guided tour by time of the many artifacts that he has in his restored masterpiece of the building. Love this place. Not only is the food good (and gelato awesome), but talking with the owner to learn about the history of the building makes this a great experience. I realize this place only has a few reviews but the few are overrated. As another "world traveler" and frustrated by the lack of Yelp reviews while visiting the area, I'm going on a mission of offering some helpful info for travelers like myself by reviewing some of places i tried on week in the area. First, bizarrely this place is closed for the winter? We went on "opening day" and the got some sandwiches, coffee, and gelato. The sanwhiches were good but the potato salad was just a heavy gooey mess of unwanted carbs. A side of fresh grapes or maybe some healthier pasta salad would have been a tastier choice. Also the food presentation was lacking and a bit generic, with a lot of empty space on the plate making the portions seem less prominent. The gelato was decent and finished by the family. The weak coffee and unbalanced lattes were horrendous and should be avoided as much as the potato salad. Stick with water. Overall , charming atmosphere in a town not really offering any exceptional food eateries and no places with decent coffee, but better than average sandwiches and a fairly cheap price. read more

This place is an old mill...it's so cool inside...they've done a great job of making it into a restaurant! We had pizza on their pizza night...really good pizza! The menu is fairly limited, but we didn't mind that. What we had was good and a decent price. Atmosphere is great!! read more
