I really, really like Ion. I used to come here a few times a year when I lived in New York, then moved away and seriously missed going to a salon that treated hair care like science + artistry. I was able to revisit Ion Studio last week when I came to town for the holidays, and am super happy with the color and cut I got from Shannon and Andrew. The salon is still using Davines, which as far as I know is still an independently-owned beauty brand out of Italy, and their products are great. More importantly, the colorists and stylists there take great care with your hair. I hope to be back again soon. read more

My hair is super thick and always gets flat really easily. It was time for a cut after seeing myself in some photos with long flat hair, and my friend Sydnee recommended this place! I called and made an appointment with Yannick a week early and was very nervous! The salon is definitely on the more expensive side, which always makes me a bit anxious because my expectations also becomes higher. The day of I had to call and reschedule due to some conflict in my schedule and eventually arrive an hour late. The staff was warm and nice and told me not to worry about it. They were able to push my appointment back luckily, which I really appreciate! The salon is located inside a building toward the back. The only way to find it is a small sign that is placed outside the front door. The studio itself is gorgeous with a relaxing atmosphere. When I arrived Yannick greeted me right away and settled me in taking my coat etc etc and offering water. We chatted for a bit about what I was looking for and what I absolutely did not want ( choppy layers ). He assured me not to worry and we headed off to wash my hair. During the whole process I felt pampered and relaxed. I get anxious easily at salons but this place really made me feel comfortable. I enjoyed their music as well ( hipster indie slow stuff ) which really set the mood and reminded me a little bit of cali for a bit. Yannick combed out my hair very thoroughly and washed my hair himself. He was very intricate and detailed oriented! I thought he was don't several times but he told me he had only worked on one part and had to do another. By the end of the hair cut I felt that he knew my hair much better than I ever did. It was amazing! My hair looked amazing and felt amazing after. I had told him I was going on a date after so he offered to make some natural waves for me and also showed me some tricks! Ion studio is on the pricier side but definitely worth it. I believe I have finally found my go to place in the city for my hair cuts :)! read more

If you had asked me to write a review a year ago, I would have given this salon 5 stars. I went to Marco a few times throughout the past year and he always made my hair look amazing. But then I went back in May and he literally destroyed my hair. I asked for a slight trim with no layers, which is what I always asked for -- and he knew I was growing my hair out. Instead, he hacked off over 2 inches and cut a bunch of choppy, uneven layers into each side. I was so appalled that I actually went back to have him fix it and he ended up making it worse -- when I came out the second time, my hair had layers on one side and no layers on the other. And this was after he said, "I don't see what you're talking about," even though everyone I'd showed had seen the weird layering problem. I have literally hated my hair every day since, and it's been three months. I just can't give this place a good review anymore and would advise anyone not to see Marco if you like your hair the way it is. read more

Leo has been cutting my hair here for 5 years...yes, FIVE. He is ridiculously talented and makes my semi-annual trim look like an incredible makeover. I wish I could come more often but Leo is so darn popular he often is on some exotic set doing a supermodel's hair (no, really). I love that this is a green salon. The idea of anything being 'green' immediately reminds me of hemp, patchouli, and paper products that melt as soon as they get wet. This place is no hippie establishment. It's a chic, airy salon that smells great and is super clean. Everyone who works here has been super friendly. Ion Studio is a wonderful studio, this is attributable to their exceptional stylists, specifically Ilka Ilka was genial and patient. She was attune to my needs and the specificities of my hair. As a blonde you encounter unique problems when getting highlights, the challenge of finding the right shade that is a warm golden color, yet not the texture and color of straw. Her work was perfect and I am very happy with the final product. It has been an ease to maintain and has retained the initial vibrance of the color. Angela and her assistants were lifesavers. I went to another salon that really did not listen to anything I wanted. Angela took the time to listen to me, see pictures, and tell me exactly what she was going to do to fix it. The salon itself is really nice and not in an ostentatious way. STAY FAR AWAY FROM THIS PLACE. Worst experience I've had with a salon -- I'll take it from the top. Have been in dire need of some new highlights for spring, and read online that this was a good place in the city for blondes. When making my appointment, I spoke with someone on the phone and specifically told her that I was looking to get partial or full blonde highlights. She said great, sure, I'll set you up with our blonde colorist. When I arrive to the appointment, I am greeted by a rather rude receptionist, who eventually took me to a seat to wait for my colorist. After 15 minutes of waiting, she finally comes over -- to tell me it'll be another 15 minutes or so. I was perturbed, but it was a Saturday and I had nowhere to be. 20 minutes later, she takes a quick look at my hair, and tells me that she doesn't think she can give me the "blonde I'm looking for" because she only does a specific type of color process and doesn't know how to do foils. I'm sorry, but as a person who works in PR, that would be like me saying "sorry, I don't know how to write emails." I wait almost an hour for this colorist, who knew I was coming in for blonde highlights, to turn me away and tell me to reschedule with the girl who actually CAN do foils. I rescheduled on a whim, but cancelled the next day and could not write this review on Yelp fast enough. Bad service. Rude staff. Horrible experience. Go somewhere else. Do it Yourself. Heck, cut off all your hair, even. Whatever you do, just say "no" to Ion. read more

I was really excited to go to Ion, having gotten a recommendation from a friend that Gabriel was a talented stylist and that the salon itself was excellent. I'm sure that Gabe and the other stylists are top-notch but, unfortunately, I never made it past the front desk. I called the day before to see when the first available appointment for a cut would be and the receptionist told me she could book an appointment with Gabe for the next day at 12:30. I was surprised that the next day was an option (especially in New York), but I asked several times to confirm that I was definitely booking an appointment for the next day. Upon arrival the next day, the same receptionist greeted me by telling me that she didn't see my in the system and by more or less telling me that I had called a different salon (apparently another salon that had a stylist named Gabe), that I hadn't spoken to her at all and that I was essentially a moron. I asked her what the phone number to the salon was, she told me, and I immediately looked the number up on my phone and showed her that I had called and spoken to her the previous morning. I am neither a rude nor a demanding person and I would have been completely fine with a normal mistake being made - it would have been fine with me if I was unable to get my hair cut because of an error. What I'm not fine with is being treated like an idiot by someone who is unwilling to admit a mistake in the face of irrefutable evidence. I will not be back to Ion Studio based solely on my experience at the desk. I'm sure that the stylists do great work, but I never got past reception. Take a look at some of the other reviews regarding customer service and factor them into your search for a good salon. The manager seems to be eager to refute every negative claim made against the salon but, in my case, I'll happily say to Gretchen W.: don't waste your breath because I don't give a damn. read more

DO NOT buy the Guilt City voucher for this salon I have been looking for a new salon to get my hair colored. I saw the voucher on guilt city (i never buy vouchers on these websites for my hair bc i am always very nervous) After researching the salon I decided to call and make sure i could go to any of the colorists on there website, (because usually when you buy these vouchers they send you to the junior stylists).I decided to see kim after reading reviews on her.Before i bought the voucher I called and spoke to the receptionist who assured me that i could go to her and even gave me a date that worked for me. she said i needed to buy the voucher and then i could call back and make the appointment. (not to mention she did put me on hold to go and check with someone that it was ok to make an appointment with Kim) SO I bought the voucher and i called back I spoke to someone different not the girl i spoke to 10 min before. He told me that i was only able to go to ONE stylist and it was not Kim. I would have never bought the voucher knowing i was limited to one stylist. I basically made an appointment with kim 10 min prior. After i told him i had spoken to someone and they said i could go to kim. He told me that she was mistaken. Instead of admitting that they had made a mistake (which they did) and saying ok you can see Kim. He told me to call GUILT and get a refund. I am really upset with this salon. This whole situation left a bad taste in my mouth.I also forgot to mention that it does not state anywhere on guilt that you are limited to certain stylists. i wasted my time researching and calling before hand. I followed my incredible stylist Mariano here from his last place, and I can't speak more highly of this salon. It's beyond cool without trying too hard ... has GREAT customer service (hard to find in NYC salons these days) ... always has kickin music on ... and the Ion gang is always ready with my beverage of choice, from cappuccino to a glass of vino). And to top it all off, it's a green salon -- meaning the place doesn't stink like harsh chemicals and pungent hair coloring solutions. BUT ONTO THE MOST IMPORTANT THING: THE HAIR! OK, Mariano has never steered me wrong. He is always right. The right color. The right cut. Even when I asked for bangs and he advised against them. I had him cut them anyway. (He was right.) And when I wanted to go short and he said he preferred the length. (He was right.) I also love that sometimes I'll make an appt for cut, color + highlights -- and I get there and he says, "You don't really need highights ... let's do them next time." Not trying to upsell me. Just wants me to look great -- which I always do when I leave Ion. Even when Mariano can't give me a blowdry himself, all of the stylists & assistants who jump in are all very talented, but above all, nice + cool people. I just recently got the new Kenra treatment at Ion and I LOVE IT! The Ion team was very straightforward with me, and let me know that it would only reduce the frizziness in my hair by about 40% ... I did the treatment and could not be happier! It's not like the other treatments where your hair looks glued to your head and your hair loses all its body/curl. Kenra bascially tamed the frizz, but my hair still behaved as I wanted it to. Love it. Next up, I'm going to ask Mariano about extensions ... because I didn't take his advice and I cut my hair short. UGH. I'm calling Ion STAT to make an appt. And it doesn't take AGES to get an appt. They are great at getting you in ASAP, especially when you are having a hair emergency! (My only tiny minus, and I'm not even detracting a star, is that the crazy lean-back chairs on the sink hurt my neck and make my legs fall asleep!) read more

I am bit a worried for my bank account bc I seriously want to never get my hair cut by anyone by Marco ever again. I got a gilt coupon for a haircut with a master stylist and went with Marco. He was friendly and extremely generous with his time. He told me all sorts of style secrets so that I can have salon-looking hair five minute after I get out of the shower. His knowledge really blew me away. He also said I could come back in a week to check back if I had any more questions about maintenance. I also love loveddd the decor. Extremely well done homely but minimalistic interior. The staff was extremely friendly yet hip. I felt they were cooler than me but didn't act cooler than me - does that make sense?! Best thing I can say is that the manager (i think, or whoever checked me out) was very very kind and concerned about how I was feeling. She gave me a discount and was very generous. The bad things were: -I HATE my hair. I wanted ash-blond highlights and left with chocolate brown all over color somehow.... although my colorist tried to convince me that this was blond. -I was there for 6+ hours...in that time, I spent at least 3 hours in the cute, but oh soooo uncomfortable shampoo chairs which made my neck and back ache like hell -In 6 hours, I was never asked once if i was comfortable, never once if I'd like a magazine, I was only asked if i'd like more water after the 4th hour when i picked up my empty water glass and looked into it. Finally after 5 hours I asked if i could have some wine after I saw 2 other people be offered wine. I think after hour 5 and a half maybe my colorist shouted over the other color he was doing to ask if i wanted food but I couldn't really understand him and at that time all i really wanted was a glass of wine and to get up out of the uncomfortable shampoo chair i was perched in. -I now have bangs that I didn't ask for b/c my hair is snapping off in front. I'm sure he would blame it on how damaged my hair was before but had he just left chunks of my previous color that was "too processed" not only would I be much happier with the color (b/c i'd still have SOME blonde) but it also wouldn't be snapping off. I'm really sad b/c i wanted to like this place and find my regular place in NY, especially after seeing my friend's hair done here which i loved. instead, I wasted my day off, really HATE my color and headed to duane reade as soon as i could to try to fix my hair to hold me over until I can go somewhere else. read more

I've been trying to grow out my hair for a while now and ION's SaraJane has been very helpful in the process. She not only gave me a fantastic haircut, but also gave advice and recommended products to help me reach my goal. I really appreciate it when a hair stylist takes time to talk about your hair and what your long term goal is, not just what you want to do right now. I've had the pleasure of meeting Leonardo Manetti the last time I visited ION. That was fantastic, I have to say. To sit in his chair was a treat; he is a world class stylist with an impressive resume. He is also super charming and friendly, which is an attitude he apparently shares with the rest of the staff. I went to see Pasquale for a hair cut 6 months ago, with hair that had been through years of chlorine (former swimmer) and a free trim from a kid at the Aveda Institute (please imagine the look on a master stylist's face when I said my last cut was a free trim from an intern...). Free is free until you look like a jagged shag dog and can't put your hair down or up because none of the pieces lay smoothly. It was a hot, shoulder length mess. I also had just cut my hand and gotten stitches the night before and was not feeling well, so I am all the more pleased with the outcome since the only direction I gave him was 'make me pretty'. From the moment I walked into Ion, I was greeted with a smile and fantastic service. The salon is eco friendly and beautiful; the chairs at the shampooing station are pieces of artwork. The salon has a cool, modern sleek feel and no pretentious air, which I was afraid of. I didn't feel snubbed or out of place by the staff or the other clients, unlike how I felt in my previous salon (which was in Hoboken, for pete's sake). Most importantly, I received the best haircut of my life and I will sell my shoes, bags and starve to ensure that Pasquale is the only person that cuts my hair forever. Pasquale was able to thin out my mane, so I don't have to worry about that puffy 80's rocker look anymore, and he formed long layers that grew out perfectly. I'm pretty sloppy at doing my own hair and with this cut, it looks flawless all of the time. No kidding, a simple blow dry gives me more bounce than California (and all ya'll combined) and people actually approach me just to say that my hair looks amazing. Actual proof of the perfect cut! David is a color magician and transformed my locks back into the color I was born with. Shelby saw me for a cut and after an initial consultation, she understood exactly what I was looking for. She delivered a beautiful haircut that works for me and showed me tricks for how to maintain it on my own. Highly recommend Shelby and David! Love love love Ion Studio! Sarah is an absolute gem; she is very talented, professional, efficient, patient and kind, and she made me feel comfortable from the very start. We talked in depth about my "hair issues" and then came up with a plan that would work best for me. She explained exactly what she planned to do and she delivered 100%! David is amazing and after a consultation, was able to treat my hair the very same day. He restored my color perfectly and my hair feels healthy again and looks like new. He taught me about the many different approaches to color (not just single processes and highlights) and he is very knowledgeable and highly skillful. David is a true color expert. I have been a loyal customer to Ion Studios for two years and my stylist Alessandro is amazing! However, the service and treatment I received from the manager of the salon (Erin) last Saturday was horrendous. I was scheduled for a cut, color and highlights at 12 noon. When I booked my appt, I specified that I have short hair and the appt should not take long for color and highlights. The person who booked my appt obviously did not know what she was doing because she scheduled 3 hours for color and highlights which meant my haircut was not until 3pm. Upon looking at my hair, the hair colorist (Shannon) and I agreed that I did not need highlights so my color was finished at 1:30 which meant I would have to wait another 1.5 hours for my haircut. When I complained to the manager that this was not acceptable, her first response was that because I was a new client to the colorist, the receptionist allowed extra time which was such a lame excuse. She then tried to call the 2pm client for Alessandro to see if they would be willing to swap to 3pm but was not successful. Luckily, I live on the same street as the salon so I went home and came back at 3pm because I was not about to wait 1.5 hours for a haircut and I could not reschedule the cut because I was flying home to the UAE on Monday evening. Upon checking out, I asked the manager for a discount on my service and she was irritated with my request and flippant. She offered me a travel size shampoo and conditioner instead. I said no and then she very reluctantly offered me a 10% discount. And, she was so rude about it and mumbled something derogatory under her breath. A good manager would have offered me 10% discount without me asking and would have been more pleasant. On top of that she gave me a stupid excuse that the colorist did not know me and needed 3 hours to figure what to do with my hair!!!!! read more

I got a Groupon for a cut with a regular stylist. I had some long, witchy hair when I went in. Not gonna sugarcoat it, my split ends were taking over. The wooden chairs that everyone talks about in previous reviews are comfy, don't understand what the fuss is about; the shampoo products that they used on me are effing fantastic. They smell good and made my hair unbelievably manageable. Yannick lopped off a good 2 inches (I'm sad, but it had to go), and gave me a very neat and sleek cut. Unfortunately, not really my style, especially since my hair is so thin and flat. It felt super healthy, but after trying to style it for a few days, I realized I should have been more specific about what I was looking for. I'm usually too embarrassed to go back to a salon and ask them to fix it, but because I'm so low on money right now, I decided to suck it up and go back for a redo. Sooo glad I did! Yannick was very friendly and didn't make me feel like I was being fussy; after a 40-minute dry haircut the second time around-- with ultra precision-- I got out of the chair with beautiful hair! About a month ago, I went in for a haircut at Ion with Shelby. Let me just say, not only is she super nice and professional, but her passion when it comes to cutting hair shows by her attention to detail and determining exactly what the client wants. I came here for a blowout before a wedding. I have extremely curly, thick, and frizzy hair. (Kind of like Mia Thermopolis in the Princess Diaries before she gets the makeover) anyway, Monroe did such a fantastic job making my hair feel soft sleek and stylish. I moved into Manhattan almost 6 years ago and subsequently spent several years bouncing around to various salons trying to find a truly remarkable place to get my hair done. About 2 years ago, I found Ion. My original stylist moved away, but she recommended two colleagues at Ion and they are equally amazing. Astrid is an all star colorist. She is precise and meticulous with her craft. And, since I have dense, thick, dark hair, that attention to detail is especially important because there's a lot of room for error when you lighten very dark hair. Astrid does it perfectly. Shelby does my cuts and styles. She seems to be an expert in different hair types and cuts, and she handles my thick, long layers beautifully. Once Shelby is done, my hair is soft and flowing. Ion is worth every penny. My hair always looks beautiful and I receive constant compliments. Generally speaking, you get what you pay for. And hair is nothing to skimp on. read more

I had Emaly give me balayage hilights and a root retouch with Kim overseeing. She matched my roots PERFECTLY to the rest of my hair color and then gave me amazing balayage hilights that blended great and added so much dimension to my hair! I didn't have a color too specific in mind so I left it open ended so long as it wasn't too drastic of a change. She finished it with a gloss- eventually about two months after the color it started to fade into a copperish tone but with dark hair, it's inevitable and needs to retouched. I will definitely be going back to Emaly for my color and I love the atmosphere of the salon- well thought out design and the rocking shampoo chairs are pretty cool. read more

I met him in last year Los Angeles shortly after he moved to New York and I still take time to see him. I love my hair again and that is because he is talented... Decided to treat myself to a haircut after a year and a half and I certainly chose the most awesome spot possible! Was greeted warmly by the receptionist and checked in for my appointment. Had a brief consultation with my awesome hairdresser Avian and was then brought down (through a stunning space may I mention) to be shampooed by an assistant which was a head massage dreaaaaam. Headed back upstairs and went in for the 6-7 inch cut. Avian was very friendly and easy to talk to, and most importantly really listened to what I wanted, understanding that I was pretty freaked out by my last haircut. I was certainly skeptical of the pricetag ($135 +tip for a cut, no color) but I will honestly say it was worth it. After Avian blew me out and styled me (she used Oribe Après Beach which I looooved), I was absolutely elated with the cut- I literally couldn't stop smiling. She completely renewed my hair, framing my face and thinning out the bottom as I'd requested, and she made it seem effortless. I am so so happy with the cut and will definitely return! Also worth mentioning that all of the staff I encountered were extremely friendly, something which may not be expected of a higher end salon. Thanks mucho Ion! Made a last minute appointment here about two months ago with Yannick. I had never been, but was in the area, needed a trim, and saw Ion had good reviews on Yelp. Yannick was professional and really friendly, but most importantly did an incredible job! I have extremely thick, fast-growing hair (need a haircut every 3-4 weeks) and Ion is somewhat expensive, so sadly this will have to be a 'once every couple of months' type of place for me - but Yannick is well worth the premium! read more

I've been twice and she did an great job both times - painstakingly hand painting highlights to keep me a "natural" blonde.
