My family and I were in town visiting and was referred to this restaurants for some great Jamaican food. We were graded right away and was able to place that order at the counter you could take it to go or dine in and the dining area is large, so we decided to dine in to enjoy our food while it's hot. The food portions were nicely served beautiful presentation. Our only suggestion is the jerk chicken wasn't true, jerk chicken. It wasn't seared on the grill and it was missing the seasonings. Also, our spinach and or veggie pie was not seasoned. Our cocoa bread was delicious our peas and rice were good and oxtails.. The oxtail meal was $30 and our jerk chicken meals were $18 I believe.

Nice family restaurant, great customer service, but the flavors fell flat as far as my entree was concerned. While visiting my BFF in GA, we decided to stop and pick up some lunch. My bff went to another restaurant in the strip mall while I decided to try this Jamaican restaurant. Walking into the restaurant it was very calming. No music was playing just the sounds of orders being placed and prepared. I was immediately helped possibly because of the cafeteria style ordering. The staff were very friendly. I ordered a small lunch portion of the curry chicken. It came with my choice of rice. I chose peas and rice and cabbage. I also ordered a beef patty. The beef patty I devoured in the car. As to y'all that read my reviews, yall know I love a good flaky, meat filled snack and it wasn't going to make it home. This was nothing extraordinary from your regular Jamaican beef patty but it was good. The pineapple ginger juice complimented the beef patty perfectly for my taste buds. The spicy from the ginger and sweetness from the pineapple paired well with creamy, spicy, buttery, flakiness of the beef patty! I enjoy this snack way too much! Wished I would've ordered 2. Now, the curry chicken, had no flavor whatsoever or seasoning. I was so disappointed. I love Jamaican food but ain't it! I wanted so much to enjoy this but I couldn't. I ate enough of it to get satisfied and put the rest in the fridge. If my great aunt's assistant living faculty was to sponsor a Jamaican night in the dining hall, this would be served! I'm so happy I didn't get the $29 oxtails. Just add some more curry powder, garlic, salt and pepper, and coconut milk, simmer a little longer and we are in business.

FEBRUARY is traditionally a celebration of BLACK HISTORY, so I have decided to do a series of reviews each day honoring Black-Owned Businesses and/or places with significant Black History. Next up is IONIE'S ISLAND KITCHEN. [THE DETAILS ] Date & time: Monday, February 15th, 2021 @ 3:30pm Time it took to receive order : 15 minutes Business level : medium What to expect : larger that it appears from the outside Parking: decent - shared with other businesses Restrictive COVID-19 safety measures : YES * MASKS ARE REQUESTED TO ENTER * Partition between staff & customers * Staff wore masks Service: efficient but unfriendly Outdoor patio : No Atmosphere : felt a tad unwelcoming Dress : casual Health Score : 96 (A) * * * [ ENTREÉS ] + SMALL CURRY GOAT (3.5 stars) | $10 The goat was tender and nicely seasoned, just not a lot of it. I was not a fan of the cabbage or plantains. Rice & peas were okay. + JERK CHICKEN MAC n' CHEESE (5 stars) | $3.50 It honestly made this visit worth the trip. Unique and delicious DRINK - none Total before tax @ $13.50 * * * PRO TIP - The line begins on the left side of the order counter and progresses to the cashier on the right. MUST TRY + Jerk Chicken Mac n' Cheese DISLIKES - Service * * * FINAL THOUGHTS It was one of those sorts of experiences that make you wonder why someone is in business. I don't want to go into heavy details, but let me simply say the staff could use a class on people skills. I actually thought "maybe it was just me" until getting home and reading other reviews. I came here because another nearby business suggested them when I asked if there were any other Black Owned Businesses in the area, so I didn't bother to yelp them. It just saddens me to write this review because I personally want to highlight the best of businesses and not criticize. But truly, I don't understand why ANY staff of ANY business would be indifferent towards ANY customer wanting to come spend money! It simply makes no practical sense, no matter how your personal day is going. If I'm being honest, many Caribbean restaurants are this way, but I try to ignore it. Food was good, prices are reasonable, but non-regulars seem to be handled with a cold, almost annoyed sort of vibe. 2021 / 36 #BlackOWNEDBusinessSERIES

I like the beef patties here, but overall they aren't always freshly baked. The owner had an attitude the last time I came here so I've been pretty slow on coming back. I asked for a sample of the soup and she denied me because the cups cost 25 cents were her exact words. That being said, I wanted some Caribbean food and I was in the neighborhood so I decided to give it a try. I had the curry goat with rice and peas and some veggies. The goat was tender but with the style of how the food is served the food just didn't seem fresh. It was a little colder than I would like but the flavors were ok. Not the worst I've had not the best either. I paid $9.50 for a small food, the prices range I believe an oxtail food is $18. The menu is large but not sure I would try more from here. All in all the food was ok, the experience was ok. I'd like more for my money however.

We arrived at about 1015 and were seated right away (we were the only patrons). We all got the chicken and waffles (with syrup on the side), a side of potatoes, grits and Turkey sausage. I have to say while the food was not nasty, it was not as good as it was at past visits. Everything was just meh. The chicken which i remembered to be perfectly cooked and seasoned seemed to be not cooked well, maybe not fried hard enough but seemed to be cooked on the outside. If that makes sense. Even looking at pics of chicken from before and yesterday , you could tell yesterday wasn't their best. Although the grits were too cooked and not very appetizing and Turkey sausage was just too gamey for my taste . Most irritating (for lack of a better word).. the music. So it was a mix of rnb and hip hop ... ok, fine i guess . Although on a Sunday morning I would think the selections would be a bit milder. And i knew most of The songs and liked them but some of the lyrics were the unedited versions with extremely explicit lyrics. I did not say anything but I guess someone came to their senses and switched the song at the end. I also attempted to order a mimosa and was told that they couldn't make it until 11 am. I was initially ok with that but finished eating what o wanted to eat by like 1140. I didn't want to wait. The service was good, restaurant and restrooms very clean, food came out right away. Perhaps it was just a bad day. I likely would not return for brunch but would probably try to visit if in the area for lunch or dinner.

Anything on the menu that's not chicken is pricey (close to $30 which is too much in my opinion). The food is just OK. The brown stew chick3n is almost flavorless. The jerk chicken is very spicy and decent. The curry Chicken is also OK. The portion size is also generous.

My meal totaled about $25 which I thought was fair for a large dinner and a side of Mac and cheese. The portions were hearty which was a plus! The ribs were really good, mildly spicy with a smoked flavor! Came with four full bones. Sauce on the side was good as well, I'd definitely order again. 8.5/10 for ribs I was NOT a fan of the rice and peas, they were different than what I'm used to and seriously lacked flavor, not authentic at all. 5/10 because the texture was at least good. Cabbage was fine, nothing to write home about. It wasn't mushy or anything but slightly overcooked and also lacked flavor. 5/10 The Mac and cheese tasted better than it looked in my opinion lol I was expecting a solid, possibly baked mac and cheese but theirs is extremely soupy and heavily seasoned (garlic taste is strong). I received a great sized for $6.25 so no complaint there. I'd rate the Mac 7/10. I'd order again but I'd probably swap the rice for Mac instead which I believe is only a $2.50 Upcharge I will return to try the jerk chicken! Overall, I liked the food I just didn't LOVE it. I almost loved the ribs but I'd still return.

So I tried to get all my meat cravings satisfied before September began, and my craving for oxtails has been off the charts lately. I've eaten oxtails at about 8 different restaurants in the last few months and I can honestly say returning to Jay's is kinda like moving away only to realize you already had what you need at home! The OXTAILS here are not only a solid choice in flavor, they also give a hearty portion for the money. There are truly some amazing oxtail chefs around Metro Atlanta, but Jay's holds their own in value. The jerk chicken was packed with flavor and cooked perfectly, and the oxtail gravy took the rice and peas to another level; rich, savory, and comforting. The service is always great.
