Wanted to try a new place (for me) tonight. Decided on this Malaysian spot by the Millbrae Bart Station and I'm glad we did! It was busy when we walked in and as soon as we were seated the entire restaurant filled up! It became lively inside. I noticed on they wall a recognition from Yelp in 2017. It was a "People Love Us" on Yelp mention, that proudly hung on their wall ;) Next time I'm having an order of Roti Canai to myself. It was so yummy!!

    Creamy, sweet, and incredibly refreshing.

If your tastebuds have been stuck in a monotonous cycle of sadness, do them a massive favor and get over to Ipoh in Millbrae immediately. Came in and ordered a feast that honestly should be framed. First up was the Roti Canai, which was so flawlessly flaky, crisp, and chewy that tearing into it felt like unwrapping a delicious gift, especially after a heavy dunk into that rich, aromatic curry dipping sauce. Next, the Green Curry Chicken arrived bubbling hot in a metal pot like a beautiful, creamy potion of pure happiness, loaded with tender chicken, okra, eggplant, and green beans that made eating vegetables feel like a reward rather than a chore. Then came the Sizzling Beef, putting on an absolute theatrical performance on its hot platter while coating perfectly tender beef, thick-cut onions, and caramelized peppers in a glossy, savory sauce that had me scraping the plate. To put out the delicious fire, the Thai Iced Tea was the ultimate, creamy, sweet savior served over an mountain of ice. The service was lightning fast, the flavors hit like a culinary lightning bolt, and the portions did not play around. Ipoh has officially forced its way into my regular dining rotation, and I'm not mad about it at all!

My first time trying Ipoh Garden. I got the V09okra, eggplant and green beans in shrimp paste. The okra wasn't fully cooked and still a bit hard. There wasn't much flavor overall. All veggies were sitting in chili oil. At $19.95 not worth it at all. Street parking

Was in the area and decided to eat here. We came here expecting great Singaporean/Malaysian food but waas a little disappointed. We ordered some chicken satay, roti canai, Chili Padi beef, and Kangkong belachan. The roti canai was pretty good - crisp and fluflly however, the curry that came with it was blah and quite watered down. The chicken satay and peanut sauce was good. The chili padi beef - we expected it to be spicy was lame (with regard to the spice) and there was hardly any chili padi (thai bird chili) in it. we asked for some hot sauce or sambal and got what looked like sambal oelek. Not spicy at all. The kangkong was bland and did not have much flavor - definitely did not have the belachan (shrimp paste) or chili that this dish should have. Service was friendly. The food is not authentic Singapore/Malaysia cuisine.

Even though I used to work (somewhat) nearby, and despite passing by more times than I can count, I have to admit that I never felt much of an urge to stop into Ipoh. Curious, as I've always bemoaned the general lack of Southeast Asian options around, but, for whatever reason, I would always pass by without a second thought. However, after finding out from one of my old coworkers that this was where she'd go to whenever she had cravings for her childhood favorites, I knew I had to check this place out...and come back to try even more! Ironically enough, while Ipoh's location makes them super convenient to get to (there's lots of street parking around and SamTrans, BART, and Caltrain are all a short walk away), their nondescript appearance can make them easy to miss if you aren't looking. However, inside, this place is great! The vibe is super cozy and they have tables for groups large or small. As for the menu, it's extensive and chock full of options, from staples like Hainanese Chicken, Laksa, Mee Goreng, Nasi Lemak, Char Koay Teow, and Roti Canai. With nearly 70 other appetizers, soups, noodle soups, vegetarian, poultry, seafood, beef, lamb, stir-fried noodle, rice plates, and desserts to choose from, though, that's far from all they have to offer! -- (#A01) ROTI CANAI - Malaysian Crispy Pancake with Curry Sauce I've had this a few times now (and still no photo) and it's been really tasty every time. The roti is flakey with a lot of layers to it and I LOVE the curry dipping sauce that comes with it. Definitely worth getting! -- (#NR01) CHAR KOAY TEOW - Stir-fried Flat Rice Noodles with Shrimp, Squid, Bean Sprouts, Chives, Eggs, and Soy Sauce I've had this twice and I'm a bit torn. The first time, it was terrific - the noodles were cooked well, they didn't skimp on the seafood, and the dish was straight up delicious. However, the second time, the noodles were overcooked and the dish felt light on seafood. -- (#NR07) NASI LEMAK - Coconut Rice with Peanuts, Chicken Wings, Hard Boiled Egg, Chicken Curry Acar, Onion, and Chili Paste Ehh...this was just okay. The chicken curry was rich, the chicken wing was crispy and moist, and the rice had a strong coconut flavor. Sadly, though, the rice felt a little grainy/undercooked, the acar was really tart, and I wish the chicken had more curry. -- (#N02) LAKSA MEE - Spicy Red Coconut Curry Soup with Yellow Noodles, Shredded Chicken, and Mixed Vegetables Not the best laksa I've had, but it was one of the better ones and easily one of the heftiest. Not only was there a generous amount of chicken, but there was a ton of veggies in this, too. That said, it did make this feel like it didn't have enough noodles in it. -- (#D1) MALAYSIAN ICED TEA Not quite what I expected, but not bad either. I thought this was going to be more like a regular iced tea, rather than a milk tea, but at least it wasn't overly sweet nor overly milky. -- (#P01) HAINANESE CHICKEN with Chili Ginger Sauce A bit different from Chinese Hainan Chicken, but I liked this a lot. The chicken felt meatier, was far more tender, and it didn't have a bunch of bones. I also liked that they drizzled on some soy, but it did make it a little on the salty side. -- (#V03) STRING BEANS BELACHAN - Sauteed Green Beans with Garlic, Onions, and Malaysian Shrimp Paste Sauce To be honest, this was pretty unremarkable. On the plus side, the sauce on this was good and the string beans weren't overcooked. On the other hand, the string beans could've been blistered more and could've used more of the sauce. -- (#BL03) BEEF IN GREEN CURRY with Potatoes, Eggplant, Okra, and Green Beans Other than the choice of meat (I would've preferred chicken), this was great! While I wish the curry had been richer/creamier, it tasted spot on, there was a fair amount of beef, and it was loaded with veggies. Beyond the food, service here is pretty good as well. The workers are all really nice and happy to offer suggestions/help with the menu, the kitchen gets dishes out relatively fast, and I love that they don't really try to rush people to leave even at the end of the night. Since there just don't seem to be many Malaysian restaurants in the Bay Area, it'd be easy to say that Ipoh ranks among the best. However, the things I've tried have legitimately been pretty good. Nothing in particular may have amazed, but it's more than solid and I'd absolutely come back for their Hainanese Chicken, Laksa, and the first version of the Char Koay Teow I had!

First time trying this place. The foods were pretty good and flavorfhl. My favorite is the flat noodles they had. The mango fish was also refreshing to eat. The servers were very nice. Nothing really special with their ambiance. It wasn't busy on a Friday night. They're also on doordash.

Unassuming purple restaurant on the side of El Camino Real. The interior was also very simple with minimal to no decorations. However, the food was absolutely delicious! Every plate we had was a good balance of flavorful while not being too salty. Each dish had its own unique flavors with nothing to critique. Highly recommend coming as a group so you can try multiple dishes at once. The only reason why this is not a 5 star review was because of the service. While the server was very nice, we did have to wait half an hour from the point we sat down to the point that they took our order and another 30 minutes for food to come out. Perhaps it was because there was only one person running the show when the entire restaurant was packed so don't come starving.

Had a great lunch at IPOH on a Sunday at noon with my family! The restaurant is bright and the workers were very friendly. We ordered: - Roti (3.5/5) flaky and buttery with a yummy curry sauce, not bad but I've had thinner and flakier! - Hainan Chicken (3.5/5) with Rice (5/5) the rice was delicious with little crispy bits where the rice stuck to the pot and so much savory flavor from the chicken, the chicken was not dry and was already deboned but I think the flavor of the skin could be better. - Basil Tofu (5/5) SO GOOD I was amazed by how crispy the tofu was and the inside was so soft and creamy. The basil sauce they use is so fragrant and I really enjoyed the extra bell peppers they were stirred with. - Char Koay Teow (4/5) really good flavor that was unique! I thought it would be just like chow fun but there was a smokiness and savoriness that was a little different! I wish there was more seafood and more noodles! All the elements of the meal went very well together and made for a great experience. We will definitely be back! We just beat the lunch rush and by the time we were leaving there were some folks waiting for a table. Parking is easy, there is plenty of street parking behind the restaurant (the lot right across the street is for Peter's Cafe so be cautious parking there!)

We came here right before the lunch rush came in. We decided on take out. When we first arrived half the tables were seated (some before us and some as we came in) by the time we left there was already a full house and new customers seated at the newly opened tables from the first wave. We waited for 37 minutes for three dishes. By the time we got our food the people who came behind us or ordered after us all got their food simply because they were dining in. The food is very basic and though the volume of food was decent, the ingredients for some dishes were extremely lacking. Laksa Mee - flavor was average, noodles were thick tasted overcooked. They skimped out on the chicken it was so dry, and probably 2 oz max, instead filled the soup with okra, bean sprouts, and green beans. Hainanese chicken - chicken texture was just bland and rubbery. Didn't taste anything like quality and very boring flavor. Char koay teow - mostly noodles, the egg was like shredded in size, three shrimps, and five tiny squids, and lacking in bean sprouts. Definitely a rip off for the lack of actual ingredients. Flavor was basic. Would not come again, basically they placed our order last even though we came before more than half the diners. No apology for the extra wait. Ambiance is just very international Asian vibes with random colored walls and ceiling fans.

    NR07. Nasi Lemak

I rarely leave bad reviews, but I am profoundly disappointed with this restaurant. As a Malaysian with an authentic Malaysian palate, eating at this Ipoh restaurant was a massive letdown. First of all, I seriously wonder if they even know what Nasi Lemak is supposed to be--because what they served was absolutely not it. The cucumber and acar (pickled vegetables) were incredibly stale. The meat portion was tiny, consisting of chicken mid-wings that were clearly leftovers repeatedly re-fried. To make matters worse, there was a mysterious dollop of something on the plate that had absolutely nothing to do with Nasi Lemak. The Prawn Mee soup was also exceptionally terrible; we left a huge bowl of it untouched because it was completely unpalatable. The moment we put down our forks, the waiter rushed over to clear the table, even though the bowl was still full. I have no idea why he was in such a hurry--maybe he knew how awful the Prawn Mee was and couldn't bear to leave it there for another second. The Wat Tan Hor (scrambled egg river noodles) was the only thing out of the three dishes that was barely edible. On top of that, the water they refilled for us was dirty and had a bug floating in it. We didn't dare take a single sip from the full glass. The absolute worst part, however, was the service. A waiter actually chased us out of the restaurant and confrontationally demanded to know if there was a problem and why we didn't leave a tip. I was honestly flabbergasted by the sheer audacity. The dining environment was stuffy and hot, the food was awful, and the service attitude was downright atrocious.

We are back again for the second time! That's right, it was so good we can't resist. We were there on a Sunday and didn't realized that they don't open till 5 PM despite that, we had great service and all the staff are very friendly. Since this place is so close to San Francisco airport, we decide to revisit this restaurant again before leaving. So glad we did. Everything we order was authentic and delicious. Thank you chef.

N02. Laksa Mee Noodle Soup - great taste!

Nice host and hostess. Went on Christmas Eve to try this place with the family. They gave my girls a small Christmas popper gift at the end of our meal. Roti was the favorite - 9/10 though smaller portion. Hainan chicken was 8/10 - balanced flavor with well prepared dipping sauces that compliment the chicken without being overwhelming. Laksa mee N02 was a red curry based broth with noodles and vegetables, as well as a little chicken that was a favorite for one of my daughters - 8/10 Green curry chicken was 6/10 Big three belachan V09 - had high hopes however it was disappointing as the vegetables were largely drenched in oil and soggy without any texture. The oil also minimize the taste of any shrimp paste. 2/10 Pad thai unfortunately was pretty bland and wouldn't order again - 2/10 One of the fee Malaysian places on the Peninsula that we were hoping would be a regular in our rotation but will keep searching.

This place has some of the best Malaysian food I have ever tasted. This place has a cute interior, with very friendly and kind staff. I highly recommend the Char Kway Teo and the Big 3 Belachan, both of which were absolutely amazing. I've never had okra be that tasty! Will definitely be back!

The menu has so many great seafood options, especially if you're a crab lover. They offer a variety of different crab flavors, so there's a good chance you'll find one that fits your taste. The crab was flavorful, saucy, and so satisfying to dig into. They even give you bibs upon request, which honestly feels necessary if you're planning to go all in. The prawns were also a highlight. They were a decent size, cooked well, and perfectly seasoned. We also ordered the garlic noodles, which were great and exactly the kind of buttery, garlicky carb moment you want with seafood. The green beans were a nice addition too and helped balance out the meal with something fresh and veggie-forward. The only thing I'd probably skip next time would be the raw oysters which didn't taste as fresh. Their fried chicken was delicious though! This is my new favorite seasoning, a slight edge above the salted egg yolk, as it doesn't taste as greasy. I wish we had taken photos but I was very hungry. In May, the end of the school year looms large and days are long and arduous. Coconut Bay was on my radar, having just catered one of the end of the year events at school. I came in for take- out for the family, but I was starving and the $8 Happy Hour specials were calling my name. I picked up dinner to go , but treated myself to HH chicken satay and calamari. Those dishes were beautiful, delivered quickly and with amazing condiments. I love the flavors of cilantro rice wine vinegar, tamarind, fish sauce and peanut sauce. The satay had the tiniest and most delicious cucumber salad and the peanut sauce was so full of flavor and super chunky. The chicken was warm and hearty , freshly grilled and generously portioned whole pieces. The star was the blonde, crispy, greaseless calamari and that cilantro sauce had a perfect mouth puckering sour but fresh herbaceous flavor. Yum. Best all, my bill for my Happy Hour meal and my family's dinner was less than $40! Beat that! Only one other party in the restaurant, so service was pretty great too! Come before the dinner rush for a bargain and bring friends to create your own party and enjoy many dishes!

ORDER: Har gao Siu mai Chow fun Sesame balls This was a good dim sum experience. The har gao filling seemed bigger than most I've had. Everything was yummy. I have nothing bad to say. Place felt decently clean. Service was prompt. Curious if they have any relation to Asian Pearl in Ranch 99 in El Cerrito? We went here right after arriving at SFO. Perfect spot if you just are coming back from a trip. Not far from the airport. Would go back if in the area!

Coming here on a Saturday after making dinner reservations on a late Saturday afternoon, I saw a number of familiar faces immediately. Half of their staff are from the Monterey Blvd. Won Kok Restaurant. This was my 1st time dining here in likely close to thirty years when it was another restaurant. Back to our meal, we were seated at the far end corner of the restaurant, prime location for spacing and restroom access. In crafting our menu, my friend chose several staple dishes from their original location; besides those, my friend was gifted a Bay-caught halibut so I asked the restaurant for suggestions in cooking it. The chef suggested cooking it two-ways. I knew the captain from his two previous restaurants (20+ years) and he guided us. Here's what we ate (family style): 1. Steamed surf clams with garlic and vermicelli noodles (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=lPyTuWkX4RoUtP-3fZ2UiA) - These were served in two halves on each plate (four plates for eight shells) for our party of eight. Tasty, flavorful, and fresh as their flagship location in San Francisco. 2. Soy sauce supreme seasoned prawns, 2.5 lbs (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=wYtIFMiiYTuhOa_CmggLrQ) - I actually requested "West Lake" shrimp but was subbed out by this. This was good, just not what we wanted and expected and definitely pricier. 3. Salt and pepper halibut (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=9scLPxW30ktLJK72UIrSBw) - Half of our provided fish was cooked this style. It was done well as you'd expect from the most famous R&G chef to go through their kitchen. 4. Sauteed pea sprouts with garlic (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=GDqjVZCqWnGvZ68sbHjqCw) - Pretty standard version and the pea sprouts were cleaned and trimmed well without any inedible or chewy pieces. 5. Pan fried pork spare ribs with soy sauce (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=x3xQew_Es07lW2dPJwB7BA) - This was the captain's recommendation and it was good but didn't stand out in any particular way. The ribs are cut into bite sized pieces and flash fried. 6. Simmered beef stew & turnip with pepper in broth (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=CAg60fXr0CfXtrcPVm2kEQ) - One of the signature dishes from the chef's days on Kearny Street that he continued at his Monterey Blvd. location. The portions are certainly enough for our large party as a family style dish. The broth is definitely the star and, for me, the radish (daikon). 7. Steamed halibut with black bean sauce (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=amzaLddp_H2vdSGzrKyYfQ) - The size of the fish made this tricky as, when the captain tried to remove the bones in serving, we learned that the fish was not fully cooked. He brought it back to the kitchen and they cooked this to a perfect cooking temperature. The flavors were nice and the black bean sauce didn't overpower the fish. 8. Golden fried rice with a touch of egg white (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=CZdyzi720mOckNXxHulS4g) - Another restaurant recommended dish, we were amazed at how tasty this was, given the simplicity of its description. Apologies for not having a full serving photo as the captain offered and agreed to him apportioning it in bowls for each diner. 9. Crispy skin roast chicken with garlic (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=TspHX9eknS496I3zXwVwlQ) - This is their innovative twist on the Cantonese favorite jia zhi chicken with a strong garlic flavor. The carving of the decorative chicken head (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=DaywI5br-WQb9hh0a5sgng) was impressive. 10. Green bean tapioca soup (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=12ljEfFOj8tqwIaBXHvTVw) - Complimentary, a nice ending. 11. Red bean paste pastries (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=MwjmcyVoyHVXnmPRWYuM8w) - Complimentary and okay. The theme here, given the restaurant size, is for banquet style meals and prices reflect it. By the time we left, the dining room and the staff were swamped. Highly recommend making reservations especially weekends. More likely to dine at their flagship but will come for special occasions or with South Bay friends.
