This place is four star consistent. The five star review is for Happy Hour, or as I call it, after school snack. In May, the end of the school year looms large and days are long and arduous. Coconut Bay was on my radar, having just catered one of the end of the year events at school. I came in for take- out for the family, but I was starving and the $8 Happy Hour specials were calling my name. I picked up dinner to go , but treated myself to HH chicken satay and calamari. Those dishes were beautiful, delivered quickly and with amazing condiments. I love the flavors of cilantro rice wine vinegar, tamarind, fish sauce and peanut sauce. The satay had the tiniest and most delicious cucumber salad and the peanut sauce was so full of flavor and super chunky. The chicken was warm and hearty , freshly grilled and generously portioned whole pieces. The star was the blonde, crispy, greaseless calamari and that cilantro sauce had a perfect mouth puckering sour but fresh herbaceous flavor. Yum. Best all, my bill for my Happy Hour meal and my family's dinner was less than $40! Beat that! Only one other party in the restaurant, so service was pretty great too! I moved to Burlingame about 8 months ago and finally got around to trying this place. I was excited. It was clean, people were friendly, and the reservation process was easy. I don't understand why they changed names of traditional dishes to fit to their menu. As I've had Thai food plenty of times and was very confused by the different names of everything. It just seemed unnecessary. Ordered the pad Thai and the coconut bay soup (Tom Kha). Pad Thai was okay- very thin noodles than used too. There was something off about the soup immediately. It seemed old and that it had been sitting for multiple days. Sure enough both my dad and I got sick that night. It has been a while since my last visit, but I see that things have remained the same, still very dimly lit in the whole restaurant but visually comforting; street parking only.The service was great as usual, although I must say that the wait staff are on point with their menu and will politely repeat your request after taking everyone's order. We arrived around 4pm on a Sunday and were seated right away, which was a nice start. Place is decent, can accommodate a large group if needed. The Thai iced tea was just okay--not much flavor, and it came in a surprisingly small glass (pic looks big) I finished it in about four sips. We ordered the Angel Wings, which were decent but nothing memorable. The eggplant basil and panang curry were passable, but we've definitely had better versions elsewhere. The biggest letdown was the American fried rice--it tasted like old rice mixed with vinegar. Unfortunately, no one at our table could eat it. Been here before, actually remember to take photos this time around. Big party of 12 on a Sunday afternoon, service was fast, waiters/waitresses were attentive, and the food was great. The interior is very clean and updated, great ambiance while eating. My favorite is their roti with curry sauce, panang curry and thai iced tea! We were famished when we arrived at Coconut Bay. It was one of the only open restaurants for Thai food at 3PM. We were doing a late lunch after arriving from the airport, we were very grateful that they stay open in the afternoons! We ordered an appetizer platter that allowed us to taste eggrolls, roti, chicken satay and crab rangoons, this felt like a good deal for the amount of food and variety. Decided to give this a try on a Monday night. It wasn't that busy compared to other restaurants in the area. The first thing I've noticed is how the menu items have different names here. It threw me off a little because I had to reference yelp to see what the dish actually is. I ended up getting the papaya salad, veggie pad see ew and pork fried rice. Everything was excellent flavor. Service was good especially since the waiters came by to check on us frequently and refill our waters. One star off for the extremely sticky floors. The panang curry wasn't the best I've ever had. It came with a mild to medium spice, though I wish they had asked how spicy I wanted it. I chose the panang because it came with a nice variety of vegetables, which was a plus. Service was decent, but inside the restaurant was a bit uncomfortable. The vegetables were crisp and not overcooked and the portions were generous. I was able to take the other half home for another meal! My only negative comment is that I wish the beer was more tender. I ordered the equivalent of pad see ew (some of their dishes have creative names) and it was missing the flavorful wok hei of stir fried dishes. Still, the meat was quality and there was plenty of broccoli in the mix. We wanted order panang curry for our second dish but they were out for the day. Instead we ordered a lamb curry. The curry sauce itself was quite delicious, as was the accompanying paratha. The lamb was tender but didn't appear to have been cooked in the sauce, only added later. Lots of potatoes but scant carrots. Price point seemed on par with a nice dining establishment. I won't be in a rush to return. read more

Aimorn was the point person and was thoroughly detailed and very responsive in messages. We had a group of about 20 people in the back room with a lunch buffet. We had the Golden Pouches, Thai Hot Pot Stickers , Panang Salmon, BBQ Beef Short Ribs, Sautéed Green Beans, Minced Pork Basil, Pad Thai Chicken, Sticky Rice with Fresh Mango, Double Chocolate Cake and Thai Tea Cake. There was plenty of food for our group, plus some to take home. The favorites were the salmon, the ribs and all the desserts among the guests. Aimorn let us arrive before the restaurant opened for us to decorate the space. The back room was tastefully decorated with tablecloths, table runners, small simple centerpieces and a separate table for us to display pictures, a photo board and frames. We changed our booth table to a standard table. It was not crowded the day we dined. Gerry, the server, was very helpful explaining the lunch menu sets. Our eyes were on the Deluxe Lunch Set. He also clarified the type of noodles from Group A and obliged my friend's request without egg. We ordered the Highway & Drunkard noodles separately. Then we had the same tofu and eggplant from Group B orders but I got the choice of seafood and my friends had the shrimps. The food arrived one at a time that was served similar to a bento box. The food had a harmonious blend of sweet, sour, salty, and spicy tastes. We asked for a bowl of steamed rice to complement our tofu & eggplant dish. We all said the food was scrumptious. Later Gerry came with a birthday cheesecake that surprised our friend. Our other friend ordered the same deluxe lunch to take home. We also got highway noodles and panang curry (side of rice $3!!! All curry should come with rice imo). Noodles were yummy with tender beef. However some of the noodles were not separated and lacked sauce. The curry was a little spicy, they didn't ask us what spice levels we wanted which was a bit odd. I let them know it was a birthday. And they got the entire staff to bring out these Thai instremenats, banged on them for a bit, and this cute Neon Sign that read happy birthday. That meant everyone had to stop what they were doing, and had to have a sign with a charged battery all set for this little activity. It was GREAT. Once again, seems trivial, but its not. Your interiro resturant is buetiful (love the Bells), food is great, and your staff is well trained., But your exterior facade needs some love. I understand that you don't want to remove the extra space that Covid earned you, and that makes sense. But please find a way to dress it up, so that it deserves to be in front of your very pretty place. Currently its an eyesore that discourges visitors. Same thing with your exterior. For my daughter's 1st birthday party I was looking for a venue that could accommodate a private/semi private room for about 70 guests, that had good food, and was also reasonably priced. Coconut Bay fit the bill! We had such a great experience working with Aimorn and her staff to make sure the party was everything we wanted it to be. Communication was easy and Aimorn was very responsive. The food was delicious and the staff was very helpful and friendly. There was only one hiccup which was a mixup with our dessert order. It was a little disappointing since we received the wrong flavor of 130 pieces of dessert. But they were apologetic about it. We did have to order more food the day of the party as the recommended amounts weren't quite enough (or everyone just really enjoyed the food) but it wasn't a big deal. Also just be aware that the deposit for the space also tacks on sales tax which was different from what I'm used to. This deposit is put towards the final bill but the tax calculation gets a little confusing. Overall we highly recommend this place. I was looking for a place to eat for Thai food. It was super busy and very noisy. The ambiance was okay with a nice looking interior. The service seemed rushed and not much attention to detail. My table didn't really get much attention and didn't get my water refilled. Also, I ordered Thai iced tea, but never received it. The food was okay for Thai and there was an abundance of onion chunks in every dish. The soup looks sad and I've had better. Prices were priced accordingly for the Burlingame neighborhood as expected. This may be my only visit and I don't recommend coming here. read more

My husband spilled his beer, they gave us another one and I thought it was nice of them to not charge us for it. Until....... They charge me for an extra item that we didn't order , and gave me an option to tip 15%, 18% or 20%. I brought it up to their attention that I was overcharged. They were nice and corrected the bill... ONLY to add a 20% tip AFTER tax. The option of 15%,18% was not even an option anymore at that point. I told them the tip should be calculated before tax if they were going to add the mandatory tax. They said they can't do anything about it " because the system just works that way". It wasn't much of a huge difference on the bill, but it's the principle! When overcharging was not successful, they added a mandatory 20% after tax.
