Irene's is one of my long-time favorite places to eat in the Tower District and take my friends who visit from out of town. I recently used them to handle a lunch order for a work event to feed eleven people. Everyone ordered something different, some with customizations. Irene was a pleasure to work with and it was so appreciated that each person's name was written on the bag with their lunch, and that they provided boxes for easier transport. We just had a very delicious early dinner at Irene's. It's been years since we've been there. I'm so glad we went today. The waiters were so friendly and gave us amazing service. The menu is so big! I've been coming here for years and their burgers and Sandwhiches never disappoint. I always get the mushroom teriyaki burger with pineapple. Now, that my husband and I live in tower, we frequent Irene's more often. My dogs tend to walk us right into tower and knows exactly where Irene's is because they have the best bacon. Their food is good, but needs a little salt sometimes, their prices may have gone up, but I haven't really noticed. I think it may be time to revamp the place up a little. I get a little grossed out having to eat on the tables with vinyl tablecloths from the 90s. It looks like they haven't been changed in 30 years. I get it, they want to keep the vintage aesthetic, but maybe, it's time to update the restaurant, especially on the outside. Buy some 90s looking tablecloths, replace the chairs with cute golden girls looking rattan chairs and this place will be Instagram worthy. Lol. read more

My granddaughters went in for lunch 8/15/2021 and were not treated well at all! They had to go up to ask for anything they needed. The young girl working there was wearing her earphones. My oldest granddaughter is young but works at a restaurant and knows how patrons should be treated. Disappointed grandma! read more

This spot is amazingly good! The food is great, and tasty. We've ordered from here two times in a row and it was delicious my whole family ate all of their food too. We ordered the ribs, the Philly cheesesteak and the blackened steak sandwich. The only thing that was missing was the bread that the menu says you get with your meals. But other than that the girl who takes orders is super sweet and really polite and welcoming. We will definitely be back soon. read more

Meh! Irene's is a long-time hallmark hangout in the Tower. It's been about 4-5 years since I've been here. But, it's changed a lot. It seems like it just needs a deep cleaning and that dude from Hell's Kitchen to snap back to how it used to be. So, sadly I was sort of disappointed in today's visit: Long wait, no silverware, cook got the order wrong, no service to clear away plates, had to ask for container, etc.). It was like everything that you'd look for every step of the way went wrong. Maybe it was an off day, but damn...it was waaaay off. Whether you go for lunch or breakfast it's amazing. We like to go for the omelettes and their bacon is one of the best in town. My favorite is the burger which has won many awards over the years. If the weather is nice, sit outside on the patio and watch the show. read more

I have been here a number of times and each time I have had the best service! Their menu is very expansive and their portions are massive. Their burger there was so juicy and tasted so fresh. Tried the clam chowder and loved the flavor. I have no idea what happened to this place but it has gone to the toilet! We went there for lunch and it was absolutely filthy. There were crumbs and dirt on the window sills, dirt and grime on the floors, and a guarantor cockroach crawling on the wall. Once we saw THAT... we cancelled our order and went to the cashier to pay for our drinks. That's when we were told we didn't have to pay for our drinks, and asked to leave. With a cute outdoor patio facing Olive Ave., this a great location to visit. Especially on a sunny afternoon while enjoying a cup of Coffee. With outdoor seating being restricted on and off, I continue to order take out when I am in the mood for a hearty veggie burger (it's huge!) and not in the mood for meat alternatives. This is their own receipe so you won't find it anywhere else. I always call ahead and my order is always ready. Warning: their fries are addicting! Boy, has this place gone downhill - used to be a great place for meals, but such poor service now. The waitress skipped my friend's order completely, so had to ask what happened to it when she brought mine - she claimed not to have heard it even though friend clearly was speaking from the menu when ordering. So came very late. When I gently complained after we'd done, thinking they'd likely remove the charge for this, they really got their backs up - manager rude and dismissive; no, I couldn't speak to the owner; and then pop, the owner was there! Asking the wait staff what had happened...instead of me! Again, I gently disagreed and she flatly refused to accept my take on it. Unfortunately, my friend had already paid or I would have refused to pay - too bad, as they need a lesson in patron politeness. All the manager would say was that there was a mistake. Ok, so now what?! It's hard for me to understand how a business is so eager to lose a customer for the price of one meal...but there it is. Too bad. read more

I met a very beautiful young lady named Erica today. She was very friendly and cordial. More resturaunt need employees such as her. She made me feel at home and welcome. Other than that I just had a few beers but the atmosphere is very comforting and relaxed. I use the front patio. Will definitely be a "regular" when I'm in the Tower. Went to Irene's last night. We had an hour of time because we were going to see the Kingston Trio. We found a table by ourselves because there was nobody to seat us. That was our first clue. Had to wave someone down to get a menu. Second clue. About 5 minutes later we again waved someone down for a drink. I think you get the idea. It was so bad that we got out bill for the drinks and appetizers because our hour was up.. We were really sorry because that first part of the meal was delicious! We had gumbo. We didn't didn't get the red beans and rice which probably also been great. When I told what I think must have been the owner said that each meal was cooked by the order. That was the final straw. Red beans and rice takes hours. Anyway the food great. The service, horrible. The funny part is we will definitely go back. We will just be willing to have to accept the wait. read more

I've been a long time fan of Irene's. I used to live in the Tower and still don't live far, so it's a favorite. However, the past few times I've ordered, my order has been wrong. I'm a little frustrated that when I ordered a bacon breakfast burrito a few weeks ago, it didn't have bacon. Tonight I ordered a bahama club to go and got a roast beef sandwich and the lettuce was brown. Highly disappointed, I took the sandwich back and they made me the sandwich I ordered. I do have to say that for the price I paid, I only got 2 thin slices of turkey on my sandwich and it was mostly bread. I'm not sure if I'll be ordering sandwiches from there any longer. read more

As other restaurants come and go in the Tower District, Irene's has stood the test of time. It's corner location, and the fact that it sits next to Starbucks certainly helps, I'm sure. It used to be the perfect meeting/interview/date/lunch spot because of the outdoor seating where you can watch the cars and people go by, or sit in the cozy interior. It's like sitting in a restaurant in Pismo, but without the beach. The outside eating experience is kind of ruined by the club across the street now. But I think it's only something you need to worry about on the weekend, or the evening. So today, we came, party of 15, so naturally we won't fit inside. One of the first things I asked the guy seating us about was a highchair. Later, when our waitress took our drink order, I asked her for one. Probably 30 minutes in, I finally go get it myself. I wasn't bothered by it too much, since I always let my son stand anyways until the food arrives. Otherwise, he will get sick of his chair before the food even arrives. I remember being stuck between the chicken cordon blue, and the patty melt. I let the waitress talk me into the patty melt. Just over 40 minutes in, our food finally comes. I look inside and noticed that all the workers are rather young. And the restaurant isn't very busy, so what gives? But everything looked great, especially the BBQ burgers. The patty melt was on, was just messing something, like a good sauce to jazz it up. I used some BBQ, but I think something else would have been better, just don't know what. I asked for a side of Alfredo and they brought me a side of what looked like milk and smelling like rotten cheese. The ranch from my salad was thicker. This cafe has definitely gone down hill. The side of cottage cheese is two bites in a tiny cup, for the same price as an entire tub at the grocery store. I unfortunately have to leave a bad review this time. I came here last weekend with my friend, after we sat someone brought us waters and our coffee/oj .... then absolutely nothing. No waiter came over to us again. But their waiter seemed to have no issue helping the table in front of us repeatedly and never looking our way. Eventually we got a staff member to notice us and told the staff member (who was texting) that we were ready to order .... he said okay, went back to texting then 5 minutes left the restaurant. This was about the time we decided to leave but had to still pay for the coffee and oj. No one still comes to our table, so we walk to the front ask for our bill to leave. The man who helped us was nice and immediately apologized and offered to serve us if we stayed. However, the bad taste was left in our mouth so we ended up leaving. He was nice enough to waive the fee for our drinks. Really upset this happened and unfortunately won't be returning for a bit. Breakfast was okay. Bacon is sandbagged, meaning they cook a lot of it and keep it in the side for quick use. The bacon was so cold it was stuck together...the fatty white was stuck together. Eggs and potatoes cold as well. Bagel was hot only cause the frazzled waiter forgot it. No refill on my coff was offered! I usually tip well, as I was once a waiter but not today. My boyfriend and myself love(d) coming here, every so often on Sunday after church. The staff is always friendly and attentive. Came in today after not coming for a couple months. Came in with friends for brunch. We were quickly seated and table cleaned up for us. Drinks were brought out promptly. Ordered a mimosa for myself really good size. I ordered the enchilada omelette and came to find a piece of broken glass in my food!! I felt it in my teeth when biting into the home style potatoes served with it, so please beware! Especially those with children! I pushed my plate aside and waited for someone to come by and ask us how we were doing but we're never checked on.. we were able to get our waiters attention but just asked for the tab and showed her the piece of glass. She gasped and took my napkin with the glass to "show her manager". She then came back without saying a word and dropped the tab off. I manage a restaurant as well and know these things do happen but the way it was handled (not at all taken care off) was disappointing.
