Today was my first time trying out Irene's and I was very pleased! The first thing I noticed was how good of a selection the menu had, there's so many options, there's really something for everyone! Our server was very friendly and on top of things, but it seemed like he was the only one.. the others seemed not as involved. My favorite restaurant in Fresno. I love everything about diners. I have always had good food here. Especially the milkshakes and burgers. It's a great family venue that I have gone to since I was a child and I visit every time I take a trip home. 4 stars because... I frequented this restaurant around 1-2 a week for a while around 2015-2017. The same people were usually working, but they never got a chance to know my name or get to know me at all even though I was most certainly a regular and consistent customer who always tipped well and brought in new business. I went here last Sunday for brunch. Service is terrible. Irene's Cafe is a diner style establishment in the Tower District. Walking in, I saw all the awards that they were given over the years and I was excited to try this place. We walk in and all the ladies (servers) were milling around in the background. This place is a seat your self BUT all the tables were dirty. I had to get the attention of one of the girls to clean a table for us. After that more annoyances compounded. We waited 15 minutes until another server came by to check up on us. We ordered the trio lunch which is a really good price for all the food. The soup of the day was cream of mushroom soup so we got that with a turkey sandwich and salad with poppy seed dressing. The cream of mushroom soup did have a ton of mushrooms but it tasted like warm flour water. The salad was bagged lettuce. The poppy seed dressing was very good. A pretty good diner-style restaurant with good food and good service. This is my favorite place in Fresno for a burger, and they also have the best fries in Fresno. A good vegan option is the veggie burger (no cheese, no mayo) and fries. A basket of fries shared between two people is more fries than you can eat. I also like breakfast here, but there aren't any vegan options for my partner, so I don't come often. Service can be a bit slower on nights when people are being trained, but the staff is usually efficient and friendly. A few of the waiters have been around forever and remember our order whenever we come in. Sit outside when it's nice, preferably on the non-Olive street side to avoid cigarette smoke from the smokers that congregate outside Starbucks. It's a bit more expensive that you might expect, but they're consistently good. If you're familiar with Uncle Harry's, you'll notice it in the decor that was only superficially changed when Irene's came in. read more

Love the food but really hard to get a refill on any drink...especially if you order coffee with your breakfast. Last 3 times I've just got up and got my own refill. I love the patio, the late brunch on weekends (till 3pm), and the coffee is just right...and my cup is always full! Terrible service, waitresses standing around picking there finger nails by the cash register. They do not bring refills. Watched our food sit for so long before we flagged down a Busser to please bring us our now cold food. Waitress was picking her face and biting her nails just standing around doing nothing. Several other customers were just looking around for someone to do their job. No one brought refills, food was left so long on the counter before it was brought to us that is was cold. I am not certain what is happening at Irene's. The staff does not seem the same, although they look the same. They spend a lot of time talking behind the scenes and very little time doing their job. A table stood for 25 minutes waiting to be cleaned while the person that was supposed to clean it walked around picking nothing up and not clearing off tables. It seems so disorganized. I used to love coming to this place but it is difficult these days. And do not ask about the new way of payment, which could certainly be the people that frequent Irene's. There is generally a line for payments and it does not seem as though anyone knows what is going on. Right now I would say do not bother visiting Irene's unless you love sporadic service and average food. read more

They took them both back when We got new burger it looked like all they did was clean the BBQ off the burger and put patties back on the grill it was really dry and chewy. I have only had their sandwiches and burgers but those are excellent you won't go away hungry. I have yet to like any of their small salads (macaroni, pasta or potato) that come with the sandwiches. Debating on writing a review but how my sister said she was treated here definitely still sits on my mind. My sister usually tries to offer a meal to any homeless people she comes across and sit and have a conversation with them, you know treating them like human and not how most people treat our homeless. Anyways she met a man named Daniel and offered him a mean. When they got to the restaurant she wanted to sit inside but the look on the waiters face already showed her he wanted to seat them outside, first . Then they looked over the menu so they could have the order ready and make it easier & quick for the waiter, well that didn't work out. When the waiter finally came to take orders he wouldn't look toward Daniel and every time my sister tried to add more meat for daniels plate the waiter (Steven) kept saying "oh that's going to be expensive " rude as hell!! My sister didn't care how much it cost and kept telling him it's okay but every add on he kept repeating "that's going to be expensive " like okay!! My sister brushed it off cause she didn't want to cause a scene but said Steven just kept being rude the longer they were there, would not stare in Daniels (the homeless man) direction and kept reaching around the table to gather things and when they set all their plates up to make cleaning up easier for Steven (even though he didn't deserve it) he would not grab the plate from Daniel and would wait for my sister to hand it to him. And when she asked him for a to go plate for daniels leftover burrito the waiter tried to grab it and throw it away , my sister stopped him and said "we are keeping that I just asked for a to go plate." He was really going to throw this man's food away just to be a jerk?? And when talked to, the manager already had a backup story which means Steven was going in making up complaints LOL STEVEN! He told his manager the man Daniel spit on him which was a LIE cause my sister was there the whole time, he lied so he could be rude? Weird. She even said Daniel was polite . I'm giving this restaurant a 3 star review based on the food only. I got a breakfast burrito with carnitas it was great and my wife got an omelet again great and my son got a pancake yet again great the reason they only get 3 stars. Was purely based off service. Disappointing. I've been coming to Irenes for about 15 years and the last couple of months the food has been just disappointing. Time before last it was inedible. I had a French dip and the meat was so tough that I couldn't eat it. Today I had a breakfast burrito and the only thing hot was the eggs. The cheese hadnt melted. The tortilla had not even been warmed up. When I asked for my burrito to be heated up it was so hot that I couldn't eat it. What a shame. Great breakfast/lunch today. It's Saturday, so breakfast for two; lunch for eight! Great food, non-rushed service... everything one wants when gathering with friends. Wish I was a hot chocolate drinker... whipped cream and sprinkles looked soooo inviting. I do drink champagne though; and their Champagne Cocktail was light and bubbly with a touch of cranberry. The food... I ordered the Enchilada Omelet. I enjoyed the flavor of their sauce! The omelet, itself, was a little overcooked... I didn't even try to send back; and... I still ate it ALL. Waitstaff was wonderful. IF you can remember what a table of ten (with special requests) order; AND not write it down... (which, they did/or is it "didn't")... along with their other tables... AND, refill our coffee and other requests... Waitstaff is wonderful. I will be back in a couple weeks with a whole different group of friends on a weekday! My husband and have heard great things for years about Irenes. We were totally let down. My husband wanted dinner but we were early; that's fine though we understand that. My husband ordered the Cuban sandwich; the menu stated it's pressed; you know like a Cuban sandwich is supposed to be. It wasn't pressed. He ordered potato salad as his side; it came with what looked like a 3 oz to go ramekin stuffed with potato salad. He took a bite and immediately spit it out. It was rancid. So whoever is in charge of quality control gets a big fat zero. I got the California burger and fries. Burger was okay; they put 4 slivers of avocado; not enough to qualify as a Cali burger. Burger was a bit dry; which is saying a lot because I like my meat well done and it was too done for me. Fries were okay; however we would've liked to have finished them. There was still about 6 fries on my plate my husband was working on being as he couldn't eat the potato salad. The server dropped off our check and cleared my plate without even asking if I was done.
