The best part about this restaurant is the atmosphere. It's beautiful inside. The menu, however, only caters to the elderly. It's boring food that you can make at home (soup, salad, sandwiches). Came upon this place by seeing the sign for Chili and pie. If you are in the area you need to stop. The scenery is amazing with a great view. From the moment we walked in the staff was amazing and so kind. I even received a history lesson of the cabin. I ordered the days special beef stroganoff, assuming a pile of noodles and stroganoff. Oh.. no. It was so much better. Definitely not the classic recipe. Think more like a hearty delicious stew. Oh...and don't get me started on the cornbread. Drizzled with honey and a crumble top. From the suggestion of our server I believe his name was Noah, I asked his favorite pie. We will get back to him. His answer mountain berry peach crumble. OMG. Hands down with no doubt BEST PIE OF MY LIFE. A small personal crumble top pie. The pie was so good you definitely want to save some for later. This is food your grandmother would make you. There is some fantastic cooks in that kitchen. And to the manager Noah was absolutely spectacular. So kind, talked to us like we were family. Your whole staff made this visit. Please support this local place. This is food you don't find everywhere and service that was top notch. And get an extra pie. Cause boy I wish I did. Was it the food? Was it the view? Was it the service? Typically a touristy place, or a ski chalet restaurant would rate the same by me, as I've been through so many and so many bad ones. Here everyone was happy with the food. The crash Sandwich was great and the chili was actually very good. The view well outstanding nothing but natures beauty. What blew me away was the efficient caring manner the hostess handled people. She was as sweet as the pie, they advertised. Then our waitress she was great, a vetted professional. She knew the product and and was very friendly and had a huge smile. All in all, price wise, this ain't no ski restaurant where it will cost you a fortune. Food good, staff great. read more

Home made chili so sinful you'll need to go to church twice! This place is at the mount Lemmon ski resort. Be prepared to wait as it's insanely popular with a small inside seating area. It's well known for the chili and cornbread. The chili is made with beef chunks instead of hamburger. It has a nice bite and comes with cheese and onions on the side. First, understand this is a restaurant at the top of a 9,100 foot mountain. Most of the mountain is public land, the Mt. Lemmon National Forest. Anything they make and the workers they employ must be transported up that mountain, as the only private homes are in nearby Summerhaven. Houses in Summerhaven are very expensive, so not too many restaurant workers can afford them. Because of this, there is a dollar premium paid. More expensive to run the restaurant means more expensive food. Also, let's face it, they're nearly the only game in town. Without them, you're buying hot dogs at the Summerhaven Mini Mart/Post Office for $5 each. Atmosphere is very ski-lodge rustic, with some great views of the mountain valley and outdoor seating to boot. We were up there after ski season, so it was really not crowded. Service - my, that cashier is legendary for her sourness, isn't she? She glared at us too. Really. Once we were seated, the service was outstanding, and yes, the chili and cornbread are not to be missed. Very, very good. The hamburger was fine, nothing earth shattering. The cobbler is deadly good too. One star off for Ms. Sourpuss. Otherwise, I'd recommend stopping in when you're up on top of the mountain. read more

This is a late entry for a review for a visit before COVID. We ordered two mountain berry pies to go. When picking up the order, staff refused to let my wife use the restroom in an urgent situation, stating restrooms were for restaurant customers. I understand "customers only" restroom policies, but I believe purchase of two $7.50 pies makes us customers. They don't. I used to frequent this establishment after Mount Lemmon hikes. read more

I love this place! Amazing food and reasonable prices. The food is wonderful and so is the service. Best item on the menu is the mountain soul. It's authentic German food and so delicious. Two brats, German potato salad, red cabbage, spiced apples and a huge piece of cornbread. $10.49 for all that!! Can't beat it!! Next we are trying the blueberry streudel! I'll join the club of people who have lived in Tucson for an extended amount of time and took far too long to indulge in this place. Mt. Lemmon trips were typically peppered with trips to Cookie Cabin, but we were feeling up for something different this time. I heard there were good soups here, so I suggested giving it a shot. The problem: I wasn't interested in the soups when I got here. The sandwiches looked absolutely amazing. I had settled on something until I told our waitress that the pics of their chili looked good on Yelp. "That's what we're famous for!" Well, any sense of free will I had went out the breezy porch we were seated at. The view was pleasant and compensated for how cold we felt. The chili was homey, hearthy, and delightfully warm in contrast to the chilly air - exactly what you'd want on a day like that. It was a good balance of meaty and tomato, and had a slight spice to it. The generous piece of cornbread was great, but surprised the crud out of me when I realized that there was sugar on it. I've never had that before and am honestly still trying to figure it out. My friend grabbed the reuban sandwich , which was interestingly made with turkey. I did chance a bite of it and was incredibly surprised by it - I will have to come back up and indulge in sandwiches next time. Overall, my experience was pleasant. We picked porch seats and were a bit cold, but our waitress was kind, funny, and attentive. The food didn't take long to get out, and I didn't even realize how busy they were until I went inside to pay. It's unlikely that the Iron Door will replace my fancy for Cookie Cabin in Summerhaven (because... cookies), but it has carved out its own niche in what my future trips to the are will be. read more

A wonderful surprise. Bratwurst good, home made applesauce GREAT. German potato salad good (and I normally hate the stuff); prices not bad considering this is one of the only games in town up there. The bread and cheese plate was really good, even had a kindof fondue type dipping bowl for the bread. I expected a rip-off from a ski lodge kind of place but it worked out okay. They have a couple of good Paulaner and other beers worth trying though at 12 noon we passed on that. Actually the only odd thing about the situation is that when we arrived the place was almost empty and the hostess sat us in just about the most undesirable spot in the place. When I asked to be moved to that "window table over there" the hostess got worried and said that the waiter would get mad as it wasn't in his section... I looked at her kinda dumbfounded and she directed us to another window seat on the other side. I didn't argue at that point. read more

A pleasant change of pace from life in Tucson. Highly recommended for the desert -- world-class rhubarb pie and apple strudel can be found here. The Iron Door is one of two full-service restaurants in Summerhaven, located in "Ski Valley". Open breakfast and lunch Thursday through Monday, closed Tuesday and Wednesday. Service is friendly. Dining room is appropriately rustic. The food has some hits (the aforementioned pie in particular) and a few misses. The cornbread is sweet and tasty, with whole kernels of corn tucked inside. German potato salad is pretty good. The chili -- a featured dish -- we found to be merely okay. The Paydirt sandwich -- turkey, ham, bacon, cranberry relish on sourdough -- was quite good. I would order that again. The German sausage dinner -- meh. Would not order that again. Come when it gets cold (temps on the mountain are usually at least 20 degrees cooler than Tucson), and sit on the patio, or visit the Grub Stake (open on weekends during the ski season) and enjoy some hot chocolate while watching would-be skiers mount the chair lift. read more

Three stars because the owner and staff were so kind and inviting. The fire was nice and you actually get phone signal here! Other than that, the food was terrible. The sandwiches were soggy and although Mac n cheese is a personal favorite, I did not take home the left overs (3/4 of the bowl). The potato salad was served hot which was weird but also only tasted like vinegar. My friend got a side of cabbage (I believe that's what it was) and it came to the table black while tasting like lake water. That sounds like an over exaggeration but it really was just like lake water you accidentally swallow as kid . We did not go for desserts so no comment on those. This seems like an easy place to eat because the other options are very limited but I'd never choose to eat here on a regular day. read more

We chose to skip desert rather than wait for the waiter. They have limited credit card acceptance, and require that if paying by credit card, you put the tip on before the waiter presents it for payment. They claim that it is due to the chip in the card. All in all, the food is good although lacking in quantity vs. price charged. All sandwiches are $13.50 for a small sandwich and either chips, small scoop of German potato salad or beans. Nelson is a delight and should be requested as your server whenever possible. I had chili and a spiced wine, both of which were delicious. We had a great view over the valley through the pines. Definitely a destination on its own, or a great place to pop in if you're up in ski valley. read more

Very cool rustic lodge feel to it. Awesome view and a cool fireplace inside. We sat on the deck and they have humming bird feeders up so you can watch them flying all around the deck! The deck itself needs some repairs and don't sit out there if you don't like bugs, it is outside in the mountains. The pies were all great very yummy, flaky crust on the rhubarb and crispy on the cherry. The service was also great everyone was friendly. read more

So, after getting ignored and ultimately walking out from the Sawmill (see review 7/23/17), I rode the motorcycle up to The Iron Door. Duh! What was I thinking by even going to the Sawmill?! Immediately I was greeted at the door and a coffee at my table within the first two minutes. And yes, they were "kinda busy". The breakfast was great; strudel awesome (one that would make any German proud) and as mentioned earlier, the service was great! I highly recommend this place - they've been there for as long as I remember and I only wish I'd gone there earlier. Note to management, maybe put up a sign down at the intersection of General Hitchcock Highway and Ski Run Road, you'd probably skim more unsatisfied customers from the Sawmill. Went with a few friends during a day trip through Mt Lemmon and ended up having lunch here. Place had a lot of simple food choices for a quick bite. One of my friends ordered the sliders which were White Castle burgers and was then mentioned that they were microwaved mini burgers. My friend still decided to order it after hearing how good White Castle burgers were in the east coast. Though they were okay burgers considering they were microwaved, these microwaved burgers cost $9. This made my friend very upset at the fact that these microwaved White Castle burgers were $9 when buying them at a grocery store and warming them up at home is cheaper. I myself ordered the Bacon Mac and Cheese due to the fact that they ran out of the wings I originally wanted. Though the Bacon Mac and Cheese was delicious, it seemed like it was the basic Kraft Mac and cheese you would see in grocery stores with added bacon bits. On a good note however, our waiter was quirky and interesting and service was good at first until my friend had to wait a while to get her hot sauce. Definitely wouldn't recommend this place if you're looking for a place to eat that's gonna fill you up.. would recommend this place only if you're in for a quick simple bite/snack! read more

Drove to the top of Mt Lemmon, not expecting to find a restaurant at the top. Nice, friendly staff. Started with a cup of beef barley soup. Hot and refreshing. Had their Claimer sandwich which is basically a French dip au jus. The beef was tender and perfect. Also had their German potato salad, warm, seasoned and delicious. Overall a pleasant stop on top. Great view from up there. Looked over the wall in the restaurant parking lot and saw three deer grazing just below. read more

Apparently I'm clueless. Lived in Tucson for 20 years and never knew of this place. We went for a day drive up the mountain and were wanting a little something, so my son suggested this place. He was hungry - me, not so much! BUT, after looking at the pie menu I couldn't turn it down. The boy had a bowl of chili and self-proclaimed "famous cornbread" while we dug in on a homemade berry pie with ice cream. Mind you, I'm not a sweets person, so me ordering a pie is way out-of-the-ordinary. But wow, I would go back up the mountain for these pies in a heartbeat. Flaky crust, not too sweet, just the right amount of bitter. Really hit the spot on a cool day up top. And that cornbread... I get it now. Dang good! Great little place! read more

My husband and I took a mental health day to go up to Mt. Lemmon with our faithful four-legged companion, Layla. We looked for dog friendly places to have lunch and the first one - Sawmill Run - apparently listed as dog friendly on Yelp no longer is because a dog bit someone. :( We ended up at the Iron Door as I waited in the cat with Layla to see what we'd need to do, since I didn't think they'd let us have her there while we ate. Fortunately, someone told us it would be okay if we had her on the patio, so off we went for what was to become the best lunch I ever had on Mt Lemmon. We also had the best waiter. Ever. (Unfortunately I have forgotten his name, but it'll come to me later.) He brought Layla a little dish of water and a few odd pieces of bratwurst after asking us if it would be okay. Of course, our dog is a spoiled brat and we encourage people to spoil her as well if they see fit. ;) The German bratwurst platter is beyond delicious. I'm not a fan of cabbage, but the red cabbage was glorious. I think I heard classical music in my head as I ate it. The German potato salad was also delicious (one of my all-time favorites) and the cornbread was some of the best, if not the best, that I've ever had. Both Layla and I thoroughly enjoyed the bratwurst, too. :) Save room for the dessert. The apple strudel comes out huge, hot, delicious *and* covered in ice cream and is big enough to share with your sweetie. I can't wait to come back. Entirely worth the drive. read more

Despite living in Tucson my whole life, not to mention all the times we've driven up to Summerhaven just to have a meal and enjoy cooler weather, I've never managed to make it up to the little restaurant located in Ski Valley. However, on a warm winter day (yay Tucson), we had it on good authority there was still some snow on the mountain. My husband and I decided to take the kiddo up for some play in snow (at least, the little that was left!) and lunch. We started at Ski Valley (note: at the time you could not go onto the run to play in the snow. You could ride the lift up to the top then directly back down--no getting off and walking around. For this once up-and-down we found it to be WAY too pricey to give it a go... I think it was between $15-20 a person. No thanks! We found some snow in the parking lot, mission accomplished.) Across the street is the Iron Door, and we wandered over to check it out. First thought was it was tiny, but cute (quaint). It looks like there's less than two dozen tables around, so definitely not the type of place you'd want to spring on with a large party. There was a cute (quaint) outdoor patio too that my husband and I agreed might make the restaurant good to rent out for a party or reception. They had a decent kids menu, and a good sized regular one too. We decided on just sharing a bunch of appetizers. The spinach artichoke dip was great! I could have lived without the potato skins, they were just ok. We each had a piece of pie afterwards and they were both good-to-great. Not as good a the cranky pie lady who used to be in Summerhaven (God rest her soul), but a suitable replacement. Price was reasonable, service was attentive, and food was good. I reckon we'll definitely be back in those hot summer months! read more
